School Nickname

School Colors

“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. It was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school. Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors in 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma.

Coaches/Outlook

2014 UCO Volleyball Head Coach Edgar Miraku Edgar Miraku is in his third year at the Central Oklahoma helm, returning to the school where he served as an assistant coach and earned two degrees before embarking on a sensational high school career. Miraku is 37-28 in two years with the Bronchos, going 13-18 in 2012 when UCO started competing in the rugged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association -- arguably the best volleyball league in NCAA Division II -- and improving to 24-10 last season. The Bronchos finished fourth in the league and won a first-round match in the MIAA Post-season Tournament last year in putting together UCO’s best season since 2007. Edgar came to Central after a wildly succesfuly seven-year stint at Edmond Memorial, guiding the Bulldogs to a 209-48 record and four Class 6A state championships. Miraku led EMHS to the first of those state titles in his initial year, with the Bulldogs going 41-16 in capturing the 2005 crown. A 24-9 season that included a state semifinal appearance followed and Memorial won another championship in 2007 to cap a 31-4 year. The Bulldogs went 27-3 and made it to the state quarterfinals in 2008 before winning back-to-back titles in 2009 and ‘10, going a combined 62-8 those two years. Memorial finished 25-9 and made it to the state tournament semifinals in 2011. Miraku played professionally in his native Albania for four years and was a member of the Albanian Junior National Team from 1992-95. Edgar came to the United States in 1995 and immediately joined the UCO program. He served as a student assistant, graduate assistant and volunteer assistant for five years while earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, with the Bronchos going127-75 during that span. Miraku has coached several club teams during his career, including a lengthy stint with the Oklahoma Peak Performance (OP2) junior club team. He led OP2 to a 58-18 record and fifth-place national finish in 2002-03, with the 2009 team finishing third in the nation. Miraku has also been involved for many years with the U.S. Men’s Sitting National Team and served as head coach for two years. He guided the team to the 2010 World Championships, the 2010 World Cup and the 2011 Continental Cup. Edgar is married (Amy) and has two children (Abiana and Arden). 1 4

Assistant Coach Kera Dukic

In her first year as Central Oklahomaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s full-time assistant coach is Kera Dukic. Dukic came to UCO in March 2014 after three years on the coaching staff at Arkansas Tech. She helped the Golden Suns go 87-26, win two conference championships and make two NCAA Division II national tournament appearances in that span. A native of White Lake, Mich., Dukic was a four-year standout as a setter at ATU. She was a two-time All-Conference performer and racked up 2,693 career assists while helping the Golden Suns compile a 108-36 record and capture two league titles. 1 5

2014 UCO Volleyball Hamilton Field House Central Oklahoma plays its home volleyball matches in Hamilton Field House, which opened its doors in 1965. The Bronchos have an impressive 220-85 record (.721 winning percentage) at Hamilton Field House, including a 115-36 mark (.762) over the past 13 seasons. Hamilton Field House was re-named from Broncho Field House on May 1, 1993 in honor of longtime coach and athletic director Dale Hamilton, who helped design the building in the 1960s. The 3,000-seat facility underwent renovation in the summer of 2001 with the installation of individual chairback seats on the floor and LED boards capable of showing live statistics were added four years ago. Hamilton Field House also serves as the home for UCO’s wrestling team in addition to the men’s and women’s basketball squads. Numerous other events, including the university’s graduation ceremonies, are also held in the building.

2014 UCO Volleyball All-Conference Players Central Oklahoma has had 33 players earn first- or second-team all-conference honors a combined 58 times since 1988. The Bronchos were NAIA members in District Nine in 1987-88 before moving to NCAA Division II in 1989. UCO was in the Lone Star Conference from 1989-10, played as an independent in 2011 and joined the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2012. Only two players -- Alma Brahimaj (1999-02) and Stacey Meek (2000-03) -- have been four-time all-conference selections. Six players earned all-conference honors three times -Amy Parten (1990-92), Kate O’Neill (1995-97), Adriana Crovador (1997-99), Katy Wallace (2000-02), Lexy Fortner (2000-02) and Kristen Wilson (2008-10). 2014 UCO Volleyball Administration President Dr. Don Betz Now in his fourth year as Central Oklahoma’s president is Dr. Don Betz, who became the school’s 20th president in August 2011 after having previously served as UCO’s Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs from 1999-2005. President Betz developed several initiatives and programs that helped transform Central into one of the leading metropolitan universities in the nation during his first stint at the school and he’s been the driving force in making UCO a destination of choice in higher education since his return to campus. President Betz has enjoyed a distinguished career in higher education that spans more than 40 years, developing a reputation for teaching and encouraging students, leadership development and diplomacy through his international activities, most notably with the United Nations and its affiliated non-government organizations. Prior to returning to UCO, he served as president of Northeastern State, a post he held for three years. He also served as Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls from 2005 until his appointment at NSU and as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Palmer College (Iowa) from 1994-1999. In the 23 years prior, he fulfilled various capacities at NSU, including the Vice President of University Relations and Professor of Political Science. While at NSU, he also was the Executive Director of the Educational Foundation, Assistant to the President, Dean of Continuing Education and Special Programs, Director of the Sequoyah Institute/Center for Tribal Studies, the founder and advisor of the university’s President’s Leadership Class and its Model United Nations program. From 1982 through 2003, President Betz worked for and with the United Nations on Middle East issues. He founded and chaired the International Coordinating Committee on the Question of Palestine (ICCP), a UN-affiliated non-governmental organization (NGO) network pursuing peace in the Middle East based on UN resolutions. A frequent writer and speaker, Dr. Betz has addressed international, educational, motivational topics, and has worked with newspapers, radio and television. His life-long interest in global issues and his passion for promoting cross-cultural understanding has led him to more than 80 countries. While president at NSU, he served as the chair of the Northeast Oklahoma Public Facility Authority, board member for BancFirst in Tahlequah, the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce, Creative Oklahoma, Inc., and chair of the Regional University System of Oklahoma Council of Presidents. He is a member of the Oklahoma Academy, Leadership Oklahoma, Universities and Colleges President’s Climate Commitment, International Association of University Presidents and has served as Chairman of AASCU’s International Education Committee. President Betz received his B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy from the University of San Francisco and his M.A. and Ph.D. in International Studies from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver. He also completed Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management.

2014 UCO Volleyball Athletic Administration Athletic Director Joe Muller Now in his seventh year as athletic director at Central Oklahoma is Joe Muller, who has helped return the Bronchos to national prominence in NCAA Division II. UCO teams have captured 10 conference championships and had 10 top-10 national finishes during Muller’s tenure, with softball winning the school’s first-ever women’s national championship in 2013. Fifty-eight student-athletes have earned All-America honors over the past six years and the Bronchos have placed 42nd or better three times in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings out of nearly 350 Division II institutions. The athletic department’s fund-raising efforts have also increased significantly under Joe’s guidance. He secured the largest gift in program history in 2012, continues to grow Stampede Club membership and also introduced a corporate sales initiative that has generated record revenues for the program in just four years. Academically, UCO’s student-athletes are performing at all-time high levels. For the past six years, the overall grade point average of student-athletes has surpassed that of the general student population and to demonstrate that academics is a priority, the athletic department now hosts an annual Academic Awards Banquet recognizing the achievements of student-athletes. A native of Stillwater, Joe earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Oklahoma State and got his start in athletic administration at OSU when he served as director of athletic marketing and promotions from 1985-90. Muller was involved in the television industry for more than a decade before returning to OSU in 2002 as associate athletic director, serving in that capacity until going to Purdue in ‘06. He was senior associate athletic director for external relations for the Boilermakers for two years before becoming just the seventh athletic director in Central’s rich athletic history in July of 2008 Joe is married (Julie) and has three sons (Jaxon, Brandon and Matthew).

Assistant AD/Operations Gunnar Poff Gunnar Poff is in his first year as Central Oklahoma’s assistant athletic for operations after serving the previous four years as coordinator of ticket sales for the Bronchos. Poff took over his new role in May and spearheads UCO’s game-day operations in addition to a host of other duties. A native of Sayre, Gunnar was a pitcher for the Southwestern Oklahoma baseball team during the mid-2000s and earned his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from SWOSU in 2007. Poff went on to earn a master’s of education in intercollegiate athletics administration in 2009 from the University of Oklahoma, working in the office of event management during his tenure at OU. Gunnar is married (Tessa) and has three daughters (Presley, Piper and Devyn).

2014 UCO Volleyball Athletic Administration Assistant AD/Business Britni Brannon Serving as Central Oklahoma’s assistant athletic director for business is Britni Brannon, who is also UCO’s senior women’s administrator. An Oklahoma native, Brannon graduated from UCO in 2002 and spent the next five years working for an audio/visual company doing marketing, advertising and materials management. A Certified Procurement Officer with the State of Oklahoma, Brannon returned to UCO in 2007 as a Buyer II in the Purchasing, Payment Services & Travel department and was in that capacity until moving to the athletic department as business manager in the fall of 2012. Britni is married (Todd) and has one son (Alex).

Media Relations Director Mike Kirk The veteran of Central Oklahoma’s athletic administration staff is Mike Kirk, now in his 27th year as media relations director. Kirk’s main duty is to keep local, state and national media informed about UCO’s 15 varsity sports and he’s in charge of dayto-day operation of the athletic website at www.bronchosports.com. Mike was a student assistant in the athletic media relations office at Oklahoma State for four years before graduating in 1982 with a journalism degree. He was a sports writer for one year in McAlester for and four years in Lawton before coming to UCO on Nov. 2, 1987. An active member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Kirk worked as the Press Information Manager for wrestling at the 1996 Olympic Games. is in his fifth year as a member of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships Committee. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement in the fall of 2012. Mike is married (Debbie) and has two children (Alex and Jessica).

Athletic Compliance Darnell Smith In his fifth year as Central Oklahoma’s Director of Athletic Compliance is Darnell Smith, who came to UCO after serving in the same capacity at the University of New Mexico. A native of San Antonio, Texas, Smith was a four-year member of the Oklahoma State football team from 2002-06 at defensive end. He was a three-time recipient of the Arthur Ashe Scholar award at OSU and also earned second-team honors on the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Team. Darnell was named OSU’s Outstanding Senior and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from there. He served as a graduate assistant in the OSU compliance office in 2007-08 and worked as a management development trainee for the United States Olympic Committee from June 2008 to February 2009 before going to New Mexico. He is married (Candace).

2014 UCO Volleyball Athletic Administration Athletic Compliance Jeremy Rogers Jeremy Rogers joined the Central Oklahoma Athletic Department in November of 2012 as Compliance Coordinator. A native of Medford, Rogers played football for four years at Southern Nazarene and earned all-conference honors at tight end as a senior. He graduated SNU in 2007 with a degee in sports managment. Jeremy went on to law school at Oklahoma, earning his juris doctor degree there. He worked as an intern in the compliance department and Office of Legal Counsel while at OU. Jeremy is married (Rachel) and has one son (Mason).

Athletic Marketing/Sponsorships Brandon Baker In his fifth year with the Central Oklahoma athletic department is Brandon Baker, who is responsible for corporate sponsorships and marketing for athletic events on the UCO campus, working with local, regional and national businesses to create memorable experiences for both fans and sponsors. Baker was at the Oklahoma City RedHawks for 10 years before coming to UCO, working with corporate sponsorships, baseball operations, game-day experience and the ticket office manager. He spent two years prior to that with the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, a minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. A native of Fulton, Mo., Baker is a University of Missouri graduate and was involved with the Mizzou chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Baker is married (Erin) and has two sons (Benjamin and Evan). .

Stampede Club Director Al Jones New to the Central Oklahoma Athletic Department is Al Jones, who took over as Director of the Stampede Club on May 1, 2014. The Stampede Club is the athletic booster club for all UCO sports and is made up of students, former student-athletes, coaches and family and friends of UCO athletes. It supports the athletic department through financial contributions and other events. Al has been involved with Broncho athletics in a variety of ways since the early 1960s. He was a student trainer and manager for the 1962 UCO football team that won the NAIA national championship and earned both bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (1966) and masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (1974) degrees in education from Central. A past member of both the 45th Infantry Division Army National Guard and United States Air Force Reserves, Jones was a teacher for many years at Stillwater and Millwood in addition to serving as headmaster/superintendent at Oklahoma Christian Schools. He worked in private business from 1998 until coming to UCO in April 2008 at Executive Director of Alumni Relations. Jones is married (Sharon) and has two sons (Jon and Jeff).

2014 ucO VOlleyball The MIaa Central Oklahoma is in its third year as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, perhaps the premier conference in NCAA Division II. The MIAA is made up of a 14 institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma and was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 100-plus years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis. The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA. The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA. The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central

Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State). Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980. Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007. Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over. Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season. Southeast Missouri left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season. Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010. On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood. Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same in 2013, which left 14 schools in the MIAA.
