School Nickname

“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school. Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

2014-15 UCO Wrestling

Coaches

2014-15 UCO Wrestling Head Coach went 8-5 in duals and finished 15th nationally in 2009-10 and were 13th the following season after going 15-4 in duals. UCO had another young squad in 2011-12, but still managed a 9-5 dual record and won its first regional crown since 2008 before tying for 10th in the national tournament. The Bronchos had their best season in six years in 2012-13, going 13-1 in duals en route to a fourth-place national finish. UCO was runner-up in the Super Regional Two Tournament and had six All-Americans, including one champion. Central came back with a 14-4 dual finish last year and came in fifth in the national tournament with one champion and two runners-up. James graduated UCO with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1980 and spent one year as a graduate assistant with the Bronchos. David then served as an assistant coach at Edmond Memorial High School for one year before becoming UCO’s ninth head coach in 1982. James ranks 15th on the school’s career win list with a 116-16 record. The Del City native was UCO’s first four-time All-American from 1976-80, finishing third as a freshman and second as a sophomore before winning back-to-back NAIA national titles his final two seasons. He is a member of five hall of fames -- the NAIA Hall of Fame (1988), the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame (1991), the NCAA Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame (2005), the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (2007) and the Del City High School Hall of Fame (2008). David is married (Cherrie) and has two daughters (Hayden and Ryann).

David James The dean of Central Oklahoma’s coaching staff is David James, now in his 33rd year atop the perennial powerhouse wrestling program and one of the premier coaches at any level of collegiate athletics. A four-time All-American and twotime national champion as a wrestler at UCO, James ranks second among all college coaches at any level in national championships with 12 and has been named national Coach of the Year seven times. David has piled up an amazing 377-130-5 dual record against some of the top teams in the country, ranking fifth in NCAA Division II and 40th on all levels of college wrestling in all-time dual wins. UCO has had 24 top-four national tournament finishes under James, including five runner-up showings, and the Bronchos have won 19 Division II regional titles in 25 tries. D.J. has coached 47 national champions and 181 All-Americans at UCO and his career dual record includes an amazing 321-54-1 mark against non-Division I teams. James took control of the UCO program in 1982-83 and led the team to a fifth-place NAIA finish and 7-6 dual record. The Bronchos asserted themselves the next year with a 11-5-1 dual finish and the first of four straight NAIA championships, winning by a 33-point margin. UCO had six national finalists in romping to the team title by 53 3/4 points in 1984-85, prevailed by a narrow 7 1/4-point margin the next year and made it four in a row in 1986-87 following a 12-5 dual season. The championship streak ended in 1987-88 with a narrow runner-up finish, but James took UCO back to the top in its final year with the NAIA in 1988-89 with a 13-point margin of victory. The Bronchos made the move up to NCAA Division II the next season and were runners-up in both 1990 and ‘91. The breakthrough season came in 1991-92 when UCO went 14-1 in duals and captured its firstever Division II championship. The Bronchos won a second consecutive title in 1993 and crowned four individual champions in making it three in a row in 1994 by an overwhelming 61 3/4 points over the runner-up. James led UCO to its fourth consecutive crown in 1994-95 as the Bronchos rolled up 148 points, the second-highest point total in NCAA Division II history. Central fell just short of a fifth straight title in 1996, finishing second by a narrow margin, and then was third in 1997. The Bronchos placed fourth in 1997-98 and then crowned two national champions in finishing third in 1999. Another runner-up finish followed in 2000 and the Bronchos tied for third in 2001 after going 13-2-1 in duals. UCO made it back on top in 2001-02, putting together a 15-1 dual record and crowning four individual champions in winning its 13th title. James and the Bronchos repeated as title winners in 2003, going 18-1 in duals and finishing with three individual champions. Central finished third in its bid for a third straight title in 2004. UCO had its 15-year string of Midwest Regional titles ended in 200405 en route to an 11th-place national tournament showing, but D.J.’s troops bounced back with a fourth-place national showing in 2006. The Bronchos captured their 15th title in 2007, following a 15-4 dual season with the Midwest Regional crown and a stirring national tournament performance in beating favored Nebraska-Kearney by 16 points. UCO was 14-6 in duals, won another regional title and finished sixth nationally in 2007-08 and went 11-6-1 with a regional runner-up finish and another sixth-place national showing in 2008-09. 2014-15 UCO Wrestling Assistant Coaches Kyle Evans In his second year as Central Oklahoma’s full-time assistant coach is Kyle Evans, one of the most decorated wrestlers in the school’s illustrious history. Evans joined the staff last fall and helped the Bronchos to a 14-4 dual record and fifth-place national finish behind three national finalists, including one champion. Kyle spent his entire career at 141 pounds and was a four-time All-American and two-time national champion for the Bronchos. He finished with a 125-20 record that ranks fourth on the school’s all-time list for winning percentage (.862) and ninth for wins. Evans redshirted his first year and then beat out a returning All-American in earning the starting berth in 2004-05, winning the regional title and finishing sixth nationally en route to a 24-13 record. He came back the next season to go 30-5, capture a second straight regional crown and finish as the national runner-up. Evans was virtually unbeatable his final two seasons with a 71-2 record and back-to-back national championships. He became the first UCO wrestler to complete a full season undefeated as a junior in 2006-07 with a perfect 39-0 record that included 18 bonuspoint wins and was named Midwest Regional Wrestler of the Year before sweeping four matches in winning the national title. Kyle repeated as both Midwest Regional Wrestler of the Year and national champion during a dominating senior season that saw him finish 32-2 with 18 bonus-point wins. Evans became just the second UCO wrestler to win four regional titles and he had a 43-match winning streak that ranks as the fourth-longest in school history. He earned 53 bonus-point wins during his career with a school-record 25 technical falls. A state champion as a senior at Edmond North High School, Kyle earned his general studies degree in business from Central in 2008 and worked in the medical sales field before returning to UCO last year.

Chris Hacker Serving in his third year as a graduate assistant coach for Central Oklahoma is former state high school standout Chris Hacker. Hacker has helped the Bronchos go 27-5 in duals with fourth- and fifth-place national tournament finishes the last two seasons. Chad was a two-time state champion for perennial power El Reno High School while also earning All-America honors seven times. He continued his wrestling career at Nebraska, spending five years with the Huskers while battling an assortment of injuries that limited his career on the mat. Hacker earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from NU. He’s working on his master’s in psychology at UCO.

Casy Rowell Helping the Central Oklahoma program as a graduate assistant coach in 2014-15 is Casy Rowell, who ended his career as one of the school’s all-time greats last season. Rowell was a four-year standout for the Bronchos, starting at three different weights and earning All-America honors three times in racking up a 134-32 record to finish second on UCO’s all-time wins list. He had 70 career bonus-point wins, ranking second in major decisions (31) and third in technical falls (17). Casy went 31-10 with 16 bonus-point wins at 125 pounds as a true freshman in 2009-10 before redshirting the following year. He returned to the lineup at 141pounds in 2011-12 and put together a 31-12 record while finishing runner-up in the regional and earning All-America acclaim with a fifth-place national finish. Rowell dropped to 133 as a junior and had a dominating season in finishing 36-5 with 24 bonus-point victories, capturing the regional title and coming in fifth at the national meet to again earn All-America honors. Rowell capped his career in sensational fashion last season, going 36-5 with 18 bonus-point wins and winning the national championship at 133. He pulled out an overtime win over the defending champion in the national finals in claiming tournament Outstanding Wrestler accolades and was named the Central Region Wrestler of the Year. A three-time state champion at Duncan, Casy earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and is working on his master’s in education.

Cody Dauphin Cody Dauphin is in his first year as a student assistant coach for Central Oklahoma after ending his career with the Bronchos last season. Dauphin was UCO’s top heavyweight four straight seasons, qualifying for the national tournament three times and earning All-America honors once in finishing with a 103-49 record to rank 19th on the school’s all-time wins list. Cory went 29-16 with 11 falls as a true freshman in 2010-11 and placed fourth in the regional tournament to make it to nationals. He came back the next season and went 28-13, finishing third at regionals to earn a repeat national tournament bid before going 1-2 there. Dauphin had a 26-8 record with nine falls in 2012-13, making it back to nationals with another third-place regional finish and finishing sixth there to claim All-America recognition. He went 20-12 with nine falls as a senior last year. A four-time finalist and three-time state champion at El Reno, Cody is finishing work on his criminal justice degree. 6

2014-15 UCO Wrestling

2014-15 Season Outlook

ll signs point to a rebuilding season for Central Oklahoma in 2014-15, but don’t try telling that to veteran head coach David James. The Bronchos return just four starters -- including only one All-American -- from last year’s team that went 14-4 in duals and finished fifth in the NCAA Division II national tournament. Redshirts and newcomers will be expected to step in at several weights, meaning UCO will field it’s least proven team in many years. And yet there are still expectations for a proud program that has collected 15 national championships since 1979. “Nothing has changed with me,” said James, who has led the Bronchos to 377 dual wins and 12 of their national titles in a sensational 32year tenure. “My expectations have never changed and they never will. I expect us to be one of the top teams in the country and will be disappointed if we’re not fighting for the national championship at the end of the season.” The Bronchos must grow up quickly for that to happen as several weights will feature first-time starters, but there is certainly reason for optimism. It starts with senior 165-pounder Chris Watson, the undisputed team leader and a two-time All-American coming off a national runner-up finish. He’s definitely the most decorated individual in the lineup, though UCO expects big things from a trio of returning starters -- sophomore 125-pounder Josh Breece, senior 133-pounder Dustin Reed and junior 174-pounder Colton Gallo. Dustin Reed The Bronchos are also looking for two junior college All-Americans who redshirted last year to have a major impact in 149-pounder Spencer Rutherford and 157-pounder Jeromy Davenport. But there are undoubtedly some question marks as UCO will be counting on untested youngsters to come through at several weights. “There’s going to be some young guys in the lineup and this is a team that’s going to be a work in progress,” James said. “There’s a real opportunity for guys at some weights to make a name for themselves and for us to find out what they’re really made of.” It’s a young squad, with 21 underclassmen on the 36-man roster. There are 11 true freshman and though a few of them will be in the mix for the starting job at some weights, the majority will probably be redshirted. “I really like the recruiting class we brought in, the freshmen and transfers we got,” James said. “This is a young team, but we’ve got a lot of talent and they’re going to just get better.” UCO will face another demanding dual schedule in its third year in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and the Bronchos have moved to the NCAA Division II West Region. That 14-team tournament will be held Feb. 27-28 in Pueblo, Colo., with the top-four finishers at each weight qualifying for the national tournament. “Our guys are excited and they’re ready to go,” James said. “I like this group and their attitude. They’re hungry and they want to prove something.” Here’s a weight-by-weight look at UCO for 2014-15: 8

125 Pounds

A crowded weight with plenty of prospects, though sophomore Josh Breece appears to be the early front-runner. Breece took over the starting berth the second half of last season, went 9-9 in gaining valuable experience and followed it up with a productive off-season. Senior Ryan Brooks has 59 career wins to his credit as the starter for two-plus seasons and will definitely be in the mix. Junior newcomer Josh Walker would probably have been the favorite, but the two-time junior college All-American suffered a shoulder injury in the pre-season and may have to sit out the year. Junior letterman Cooper Finch, sophomore letterman Lloyd Crownover and redshirt freshman Zac D’Amico are also here and can’t be overlooked. Coach James Says: “We’ve got a lot of depth here and it’s a good, competitive weight. Each guy has something to offer and we really don’t know what’s going to happen. We need this weight to be productive, I know that, and hopefully with the depth we have it will.”

133 Pounds

The Bronchos will be counting on senior Dustin Reed to step in and take over here, with much expected of the former national qualifier. Reed made it to the national tournament at this weight in 2012 during an 18-9 campaign before redshirting the next year and then was the starter at 141 the second half of last season. He went 13-13, including a 2-2 mark in the regional tournament, but should shine at a weight more fitted for him. Freshman Briar Stopp is a talented youngster and will be the main back-up, with more help available from sophomore letterman Lloyd Crownover if needed. Coach James Says: “Dustin probably wasn’t at the right weight last year, but it’s what worked best for the team. Now he’s at a weight where he feels comfortable and confident and he’s a guy who just needs to put it all together. Dustin can do good things this season and we expect it.”

141 Pounds

Lots of possibilities as UCO has several candidates ready to vie for the starting job and it may be awhile before somebody emerges from what should be an interesting battle. Two seniors headline the weight and both are anxious to contribute in their final season on the mat. Transfer Josh Durham was a two-year letterman at Oklahoma and Austin Quinton is a three-year letterman coming back from injury, though they’re hardly alone. Sophomore Tyler Tustin went 12-9 with nine bonus-point wins in gaining much-needed experience last year as the first-semester starter and will definitely be in the hunt as well as highly-regarded rookie Will Steltzlen. Coach James Says: “Another weight that is interesting for us. All four guys are capable and we’ll have to make some decisions, but we’ll let the actions on the mat determine it. We’ve got some depth and I feel we’re going to be competitive here.”

2014-15 UCO Wrestling 2014-15 Season Outlook Coach James Says: “Colton is our guy. He’s been challenged and tested by some setbacks, but we know that when he’s in the lineup we get good results. He’s strong, has worked extremely hard and he fits this weight. Colton caught a horrible break last year with the injuries he had, but he’s back at it and it shows the character of the guy. He’s got two years left and is determined to take advantage of the opportunity in front of him. We’ve got a lot of young guys here that we like, so our depth is good.”

149 Pounds

Junior Spencer Rutherford is the clear favorite to step in here, with the Bronchos looking for the former junior college All-American to be a major contributor. Rutherford redshirted behind a returning All-American last year and is ready to become a mainstay in the lineup, with several candidates available to help if needed. Junior letterman LeSean Sanders, redshirt freshman Alec Warren and rookies Cody Ryan and Brandon Stanley give UCO great depth. Coach James Says: “Spencer is definitely the front-runner. We redshirted him by design last year and he’s looking good. He’s been waiting his turn and is a real physical, savvy wrestler who gets after it. But we’ve got some other guys here that can’t be overlooked and they will push the issue.”

184 Pounds

This should be an interesting weight and there is no clear-cut favorite in what should be a wide-open battle for the starting job. UCO will definitely be inexperienced as all three contenders have yet to see action for the Bronchos. Sophomore Cason Montgomery redshirted last year, while Jadon Davenport, Caleb Hawes and Marlon Houston are all incoming freshmen. Coach James Says: “We’re going to have a young guy in here and it should be a dogfight between all four of them. Cason redshirted last year and then we have three freshman and all of them are good, young kids. We need somebody to step up and obviously they’ll be young and inexperienced, but that’s where we’re at here.”

157 Pounds

Another weight where UCO had a starter-in-waiting redshirting while a senior standout finished his career last season, with junior Jeromy Davenport set to take over. A two-time junior college All-American, Davenport should have a big impact and the Bronchos are counting on that. Freshmen Josh Jacobson, David Thomas and Mason Thompson are talented newcomers who provide depth. Coach James Says: “It’s pretty much the same situation here as at 149 in that we redshirted Jeromy by design. He had some junior college success and knows it’s his time and that he has to step it up. Jeromy manages himself well and if he wins 5-1 he probably dominated the match. We’ve got some promising freshmen as well and they all have great futures with us.”

197 Pounds

A pair of unprovens will square off for the No. 1 spot as sophomore letterman John Finn and junior Michael Conner will battle it out. Finn gained some much-needed experience at heavyweight last year and he should benefit from the drop down, while Conner hasn’t competed since wrestling at Oklahoma City University in 2011-12. 165 Pounds Coach James Says: “We’ve got There are no worries here as senior two guys and we’ll let them go at it. standout Chris Watson reigns supreme. John got some time last year at heavyA two-time All-American who went 38-3 with weight, but this is a better weight for him and Colton Gallo 20 bonus-point wins as the national runner-up last Michael redshirted after getting some experience at season, Watson is ranked No. 1 in the nation and is poised OCU the year before. They’re two big, physical guys and it’s another to end his sensational career in style. weight where we need one of the two to step up and take charge. We’ll Four highly-touted rookies -- Josh Jacobson, Gage Stallworth, have to wait and see what happens.” David Thomas and Mason Thompson -- are available to help. Coach James Says: “Chris is obviously the most proven wrestler on the team and he’s a great team leader. He had a heck of a year last Heavyweight season and came up a little short. There’s still a lot of work ahead and Another weight with two candidates, both with not much experience. he knows it won’t be given to him, but Chris is determined and we’re Junior Quinn Hulsey lettered in a reserve role last year after returning looking for big things from him. We’ve got some good, young guys to the mat following a two-year absence, and redshirt freshman Kyle here and we’re excited about them.” Factor spent two years off the mat while playing football at Missouri Southern. Junior Evan McGee was a third-place junior college All-American 174 Pounds last season, but he’s scheduled to redshirt this year. The Bronchos are looking for an injury-free season from junior Colton Coach James Says: “It’s between Quinn and Kyle and neither has a Gallo, who is a definite All-America candidate if he can stay on the mat. lot of experience. They’ve been working hard, but we’re not sure what Gallo was in-and-out of the starting lineup with a variety of ailments to expect. Again, it’s a situation where one guy needs to come to the last year while going 9-5, but he clearly showed during that limited front and take ownership of the weight.” action what UCO could expect. Junior letterman Dylan Harmon will help out, while redshirt freshman Reid Rodich and rookie Blane Culp are also available. 9

2014-15 UCO Wrestling the miD-ameriCa interCOllegiate athletiCs assOCiatiOn

Central Oklahoma is in its third year as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The MIAA, a 14-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis. The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA. The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA. The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges:

Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State). Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980. Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007. Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over. Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season. Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season. Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, Nebraska-Omaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010. UCO, Lindenwood, Nebraska-Kearney and Northeastern State all become league members with the start of the 2012-13 academic year. Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same in 2013, which leaves the conference with 14 schools. Lincoln and SBU are associate members and don’t compete in football.
