“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school. Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

School Colors

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors in 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma.

the finals. The Bronchos ended up 46-9 while setting or tying 17 team and individual single-season records and were No. 2 in the final ranking. Stidham is a local product of Edmond Memorial High School, earning All-State honors for the Bulldogs in 1986 before signing with Kansas. Genny left KU after one semester and sat out the next four years before returning to school at UCO in the fall of 1990. She enjoyed a astellar two-year career with the Bronchos, going 14-5 with 10 shutouts and a 0.73 earned run average in 1991 and 11-5 with a 1.21 ERA as a senior in 1992. Stidham also hit .425 that year with 14 doubles to earn first-team All-Midwest Region honors and second-team All-America recognition as a utility player. Stidham ranks second on UCO’s career winning percentage list at .714 with a 25-10 record. She had 278 strikeouts and gave up only 32 earned runs in 231 innings pitched, finishing with a career 0.97 ERA. Genny went into private business for a year after leaving UCO, then earned her bachelor’s degree from East Central in 1994. Stidham spent the 1995 season as an assistant coach at Oklahoma before returning to UCO as the graduate assistant in 1996 and ‘97. The Bronchos were 44-30 in those two years and Stidham received her master’s from UCO in 1997 before taking over the helm the following season. Genny is married (Jerod) and has two children (Allie and Connor).

Now in her 16th year at the controls of the Central Oklahoma program is former All-American Genny Stidham, who has turned the Bronchos into an annual NCAA Division II national contender. Stidham reached the 400-win plateau and became the winningest softball coach in school history during a record-setting 2012 campaign and is now 424-278-2 at the helm. She’s led the Bronchos to two Lone Star Conference championships and six national tournament berths, including trips to the NCAA Division II World Series

in 2006 and ‘12. Genny, a star pitcher-shortstop for the Bronchos in the early-1990s who was inducted into the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009, has led the Bronchos to the five winningest seasons in school history (46 in 2012, 41 in ‘05, 36 in ‘08, 35 in ‘02 and 32 in ‘10). She’s coached 75 all-conference players during her tenure along with three All-Americans. Stidham took over the UCO reigns in 1998 and guided the Bronchos to their first LSC championship that season. UCO hosted the LSC Tournament as the No. 1 seed from the North Division and defeated Tarleton State 5-4 in the finals to claim the crown and cap a 24-15 season. The Bronchos finished 23-23 in 1999, struggled to a 14-22-1 campaign in 2000 and were 24-22 in 2001 before breaking through in 2002. UCO finished 35-16 and made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II national tournament in 2002. The Bronchos were LSC North Division runners-up and finished second in the LSC Tournament to earn a trip to the South Central Regional, knocking off No. 12 Mesa State in the first round before being eliminated with two close losses. A slow start and some key injuries plagued UCO during a 17-29-1 finish in 2003 and the Bronchos went 21-20 in 2004. UCO enjoyed one of its best-ever seasons in 2005 in finishing 41-14 while capturing both the LSC North Division and LSC Tournament titles. The Bronchos advanced to the South Central Regional in San Antonio, Texas, going 2-2 and finishing 12th in the final poll. Stidham and UCO went back to the national tournament in 2006, overcoming a tough finish with a stirring post-season run. The Bronchos placed third in the LSC North Division and went 2-2 in the LSC Tournament, barely making it to the South Central Regional as the No. 7 seed. UCO cruised to three easy wins in the eight-team regional to make the finals, then trimmed Incarnate Word 5-4 in a thrilling finals contest to claim its first-ever regional crown and advance to the Division II World Series. The Bronchos fell to Cal State-Bakersfield in the first round at Salem, Va., then knocked off Southern Illinois-Edwardsville before being ousted by eventual runner-up Emporia State to finish 31-17. Central went 29-16 and just missed out on a third straight national tournament berth in 2007 before going 36-16 and making it back to the national playoffs in 2008. The Bronchos were North Division runners-up in 2009 in finishing 2615, bounced back with a 32-21 campaign in 2010 to earn another national tournament berth and went 25-23 in 2011 for their eighth consecutive winning season. Stidham led UCO to its best-ever season in 2012, winning a schoolrecord 46 games en route to making a run at the national championship. The Bronchos reeled off 35 straight wins during the season -- 20 games longer than the previous school record -- and won the South Central Regional crown in qualfying for its second World Series appearance. Assistant Coach Cody White

In his first year as Central Oklahoma’s first-ever full-time assistant softball coach is Cody White, a former college baseball standout who joined the Bronchos in August of 2012. White came to UCO after serving as assistant baseball and softball coach at Edmond Memorial High School. He was on the baseball staff for four years, helping the Bulldogs reach the state tournament in 2010, and was the assistant softball coach for three seasons. Cody guided the Edmond Stars American Legion team to the state tournament in his one year as head coach and he helped lead the Edmond Memorial American Legion team to a pair of state runner-up finishes during two years as an assistant. White played baseball at North Central Texas College for one year before spending his final three seasons at Southern Nazarene. He was a two-time Sooner Athletic Conferene Gold Glover Catcher for the Crimson Storm in addition to earning All-SAC honors. Cody, who received his bachelor’s degree from SNU, is married to former UCO softball standout Hillary Brandt and has one daughter (Lillie). 5

22 Kacie Edwards 5-7 • Third Base • Senior • Yukon Senior star and the reigning NCAA Division II Player of the Year . . . Left-handed slugger who has put together a fantastic career, highlighted by a sensational junior season last year . . . Is still recovering from off-season knee surgery, but will once again be the focal point of UCO’s offense with her powerful hitting ability . . . 2013 UCO Softball All-Conference Players Central Oklahoma has had 49 players earn first- or second-team all-conference honors a combined 80 times, all while a member of the Lone Star Conference (North Division) from 1997-2011. The Bronchos played as an NCAA Division II independent during the 2012 season before joining the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association for the 2013 campaign. Alli Blake was the only four-time All-LSC North Division performer for the Bronchos, earning first-team honors in 2005 and ‘07 and secondteam accolades in 2006 and ‘08. Four players were three-time honorees -- Molly Shivers (2008, ‘09 and ‘10), Jodi Craig (2004, ‘07 and ‘08), Stacy Walden (2005, ‘06 and ‘07) and April Ferrall (2001, ‘02 and ‘03). NCAA Division II National Tournament History Central Oklahoma has qualified for the NCAA Division II national tournament six times since joining the organization in 1989-90. All six appearances have come since 2002 and the Bronchos have an all-time record of 16-14 in national tournament games. UCO captured regional championships in 2006 and 2012 to qualify for the Division II World Series. A year-by-year look at UCO in the national tournament:

2002

UCO qualified for its first-ever Division II national tournament in 2002, going to San Antonio, Texas for the South Central Regional. The Bronchos beat Colorado Mesa 3-2 in the first round before being eliminated with back-to-back losses to Texas A&M-Kingsville (1-0 and 4-0).

2005

UCO’s second Division II playoff appearance resulted in another trip to San Antonio, Texas for the South Central Regional, with the Bronchos going 2-2. Central fell to Angelo State 6-4 in the first round, then rebounded to shut out Midwestern State (3-0) and Abilene Christian (4-0) before being ousted by ASU (5-2).

2008

The Bronchos were back in the playoffs after a one-year hiatus, traveling to San Angelo, Texas for the 2008 South Central Regional. UCO fell to Southeastern Oklahoma 2-0 in the first round, stayed alive with a 7-4 win over St. Mary’s and was eliminated by St. Edward’s 3-0.

2010

UCO made its shortest Division II national tournament appearance in 2010 in Emporia State, losing two to Angelo State (4-0) and Texas Woman’s (7-2) in its first two games.

2012

UCO capped its best-ever season with a second trip to the World Series. The Bronchos hosted the South Central Regional I Tournament, beating Incarnate Word (3-1) and Emporia State (2-1) before the Hornets forced an “if necessary” game with a 2-0 win. UCO scored three seventh-inning runs to top ESU 8-6 in the finals and advance to San Angelo, Texas for the Super Regional. The Bronchos trimmed Angelo State 1-0 in the opener of that best-of-three series, but the Rambelles squared it with a 12-3 rout. UCO rebounded with an 11-3 rout to capture the regional title. Central beat Flagler (4-2) and Southern Connecticut (6-4) in the first two rounds of the World Series in Louisville, Ky. before falling to UC San Diego twice (4-3 and 2-0) to tie for third in finishing 46-9.

2006

UCO had an amazing post-season run in 2006 when it made it back to the national tournament for the second straight year. The Bronchos entered the South Central Regional in Wichita Falls, Texas as the No. 7 seed and rolled over Abilene Christian (6-0), St. Edward’s (8-0) and Incarnate Word (7-0) to make the finals before clipping UIW 5-4 in extra innings to advance to the World Series in Salem, Va.. UCO lost to Cal State-Bakersfield 6-1 in the first round, then blanked Southern Illlinois-Edwardsville 2-0 before being eliminated by Emporia State 4-3 in tying for fifth.

2013 UCO Softball Athletic Administration President Dr. Don Betz Now in his second year as Central Oklahoma’s president is Dr. Don Betz, who became the school’s 20th president in August 2011 after having previously served as UCO’s Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs from 1999-2005. President Betz developed several initiatives and programs that helped transform Central into one of the leading metropolitan universities in the nation during his first stint at the school and he’s been the driving force in making UCO a destination of choice in higher education since his return to campus. President Betz has enjoyed a distinguished career in higher education that spans more than 40 years, developing a reputation for teaching and encouraging students, leadership development and diplomacy through his international activities, most notably with the United Nations and its affiliated non-government organizations. Prior to returning to UCO, he served as president of Northeastern State, a post he held for three years. He also served as Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls from 2005 until his appointment at NSU and as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Palmer College (Iowa) from 1994-1999. In the 23 years prior, he fulfilled various capacities at NSU, including the Vice President of University Relations and Professor of Political Science. While at NSU, he also was the Executive Director of the Educational Foundation, Assistant to the President, Dean of Continuing Education and Special Programs, Director of the Sequoyah Institute/Center for Tribal Studies, the founder and advisor of the university’s President’s Leadership Class and its Model United Nations program. From 1982 through 2003, President Betz worked for and with the United Nations on Middle East issues. He founded and chaired the International Coordinating Committee on the Question of Palestine (ICCP), a UN-affiliated non-governmental organization (NGO) network pursuing peace in the Middle East based on UN resolutions. A frequent writer and speaker, Dr. Betz has addressed international, educational, motivational topics, and has worked with newspapers, radio and television. His life-long interest in global issues and his passion for promoting cross-cultural understanding has led him to more than 80 countries. While president at NSU, he served as the chair of the Northeast Oklahoma Public Facility Authority, board member for BancFirst in Tahlequah, the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce, Creative Oklahoma, Inc., and chair of the Regional University System of Oklahoma Council of Presidents. He is a member of the Oklahoma Academy, Leadership Oklahoma, Universities and Colleges President’s Climate Commitment, International Association of University Presidents and has served as Chairman of AASCU’s International Education Committee. President Betz received his B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy from the University of San Francisco and his M.A. and Ph.D. in International Studies from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver. He also completed Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management.

Athletic Director Joe Muller Now in his fifth year as athletic director at Central Oklahoma is Joe Muller, who has helped return the Bronchos to national prominence in NCAA Division II. UCO finished 32nd among more than 300 Division II schools in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings for 2011-12, the highest finish in nearly 15 years for the Bronchos, and the athletic department’s fund-raising efforts have reached new heights. Muller brought a wealth of Division I experience when he became just the seventh athletic director in school history in July of 2008 after previous stints at Oklahoma State and Purdue. Joe served as senior associate athletic director for external relations at Purdue for two years before coming to UCO. He oversaw all facets of external relations while at Purdue, including development, marketing and promotions and the John Purdue Club. A graduate of Stillwater High School, Joe earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from OSU. He served as director of athletic marketing and promotions at OSU from 1985-90 and then was involved in the television industry for more than a decade. Muller returned to Oklahoma State in 2002 as associate athletic director, serving in that capacity until going to Purdue. His duties included all development activities of the athletic department and under Muller’s watch, OSU raised over $90 million to renovate its football stadium, set football attendance records in 2003, ’04 and ’05 and had all-sport ticket revenues increase more than 115 percent. Joe is married (Julie) and has three sons (Jaxon, Brandon and Matthew). 28

2013 UCO Softball Athletic Administration Senior Associate Athletic Director Scott Williams Scott Williams is in his third year as Central Oklahoma’s senior associate athletic director, coming to Edmond in December of 2009 after a nearly five-year stint at Oklahoma State. His main duties include overseeing UCO’s athletic facilities and the day-to-day operations of the athletic department and he was the event manager for three NCAA Division II regional tournaments the Bronchos hosted in 2011-12 -- soccer, wrestling and softball. Williams was associate athletic director for compliance at OSU for three years, overseeing the entire compliance program. He spent the previous two years at OSU as assistant athletic director for compliance, with the responsibility of seven varsity programs. Scott spent seven years as assistant athletic director for compliance at Oral Roberts before going to OSU. He was responsible for all compliance-related matters in addition to supervising eight varsity programs and coordinating all event management activities for home athletic events at ORU. A 1995 graduate of OSU, Williams earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma in 1998 and worked in the University of Kansas athletic department before going to ORU. Scott, a product of Deer Creek High School outside Edmond, is married (Tammy) and has four children (J.R., Matthew, Hannah and Luke).

Athletic Compliance Darnell Smith Serving as Central Oklahoma’s Director of Athletic Compliance is Darnell Smith, who took over the position in June of 2010 after serving in the same capacity at the University of New Mexico. A native of San Antonio, Texas, Smith was a four-year member of the Oklahoma State football team from 2002-06 at defensive end. He was a three-time recipient of the Arthur Ashe Scholar award at OSU and also earned second-team honors on the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Team. Darnell was named OSU’s Outstanding Senior and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from there. He served as a graduate assistant in the OSU compliance office in 2007-08 and worked as a management development trainee for the United States Olympic Committee from June 2008 to February 2009. Smith went to New Mexico in February of 2009 and was there until coming to UCO. He is married (Candace).

In his second year with the Central Oklahoma athletic department is Brandon Baker, who is responsible for corporate sponsorships and marketing for athletic events on the UCO campus, working with local, regional and national businesses to create memorable experiences for both fans and sponsors. Baker was at the Oklahoma City RedHawks for 10 years before coming to UCO, working with corporate sponsorships, baseball operations, game-day experience and ticket office manager. He spent two years prior to that with the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, a minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. A native of Fulton, Mo., Baker is a University of Missouri graduate and was involved with the Mizzou chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Baker is married (Erin) and has two sons (Benjamin and Evan).

Gunnar Poff is in his third year with the Central Oklahoma Athletic Department, coordinating ticket sales for the Bronchos while also assisting in a host of other roles related to game-day operations. A native of Sayre, Poff earned his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Southwestern Oklahoma in 2007. Gunnar was a pitcher on the baseball team while at SWOSU. He went on to earn a master’s of education in intercollegiate athletics administration in 2009 from the University of Oklahoma, working in the office of event management during his tenure with the Sooners. Poff is married (Tessa) and has two daughters (Presley and Piper).

New to the Central Oklahoma Athletic Department is Britni Brannon, who took over as business manager in the fall of 2012. An Oklahoma native, Brannon graduated from UCO in 2002 and spent the next five years working for an audio/visual company doing marketing, advertising and materials management. A Certified Procurement Officer with the State of Oklahoma, Brannon returned to UCO in 2007 as a Buyer II in the Purchasing, Payment Services & Travel department and was in that capacity until moving to the athletic department. Britni is married (Todd) and has one son (Alex).

Jeremy Rogers joined the Central Oklahoma Athletic Department in November of 2012 as Compliance Coordinator. A native of Medford, Rogers played football for four years at Southern Nazarene and earned all-conference honors at tight end as a senior. He graduated SNU in 2007 with a degee in sports managment. Jeremy went on to law school at Oklahoma, earning his juris doctor degree there. He worked as an intern in the compliance department and Office of Legal Counsel while at OU.

The Central Oklahoma Athletic Media Relations Office is under the direction of Mike Kirk, whose main duty is to keep local, state and national media informed about UCO’s 14 varsity sports. Kirk is in his 26th year with the Bronchos, coming to UCO in November 1987. Mike started his career in sports information as a student assistant at Oklahoma State University, where he worked for four years before graduating in 1982 with a journalism degree. He was a sports writer at newspapers in McAlester and Lawton for five years before starting his UCO career on Nov. 2, 1987. An active member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) who has served on several committees during his career, Kirk worked as the Press Information Manager for wrestling at the 1996 Olympic Games. He is in his third year as a member of the NCAA Wrestling Championships Committee, serving as the chair of the Division II Committee in 2012-13. Kirk was inducted into the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement in the fall of 2012. Kirk has received 58 CoSIDA publication awards at UCO, including 27 Best in the Nation citations. Mike is married (Debbie) and has two children (Alex and Jessica).

New to the Central Oklahoma Athletic Department is veteran broadcaster David Garrett, who serves as the Media Specialist for the Bronchos. Garrett oversees future creation and production of UCO Athletics’ enhanced presence on the internet, radio, and television. He has been UCO’s football radio play-by-play announcer since 2007, adding men’s and women’s basketball in recent years. A native of Henryetta, Garrett began his play-by-play career in high school and through a 37-year career called college games in various sports for Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and others in addition to doing dozens of high school championships and all-star games. Garrett also served as the voice of the New Orleans Saints in 1992 and the Dallas Cowboys in 1995, winning the 1996 KATIE Award from the Dallas Press Club for his broadcast of the Cowboys’ 27-17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XXX. Garrett also won “Best Play-By-Play/Large Market” from the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters for his UCO football broadcasts in 2008, ’09, and ’10. David, who is working to complete his bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership at UCO, is married (Rajeana) and has two daughters (Allison and Alicia).

2013 UCO Softball The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Central Oklahoma is in its first year as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis. The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA. The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA. The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri

State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State). Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980. Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007. Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over. Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season. Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season. Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010. On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood. Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State will do the same next year, which will leave 14 schools in the MIAA.
