Breaking Down Barriers in Jazz By BETH WOOD

Voice of the Instructor:

HOLLY HOFMANN Holly Hofmann is an acclaimed jazz musician who tours internationally. Her success has not been without challenges, however. Hofmann has had to overcome misconceptions and biases about her gender and her instrument. Often told a woman couldn’t make a living in jazz, she also has had to convince many that the flute belongs in a jazz band as much as a saxophone or trumpet. “I have been fighting discrimination since I was a young student,” Hofmann said. “The flute was a problem, but it’s also related to the question about women. Other women who played the so-called jazz instruments 8

Spring 2016 | extension.ucsd.edu | (858) 534-3400

were not welcome either. A lot of the men didn’t want women on the bus.” Hofmann fully supports the goal of the UC San Diego Jazz Camp to increase its number of female students. She has been an instructor at the weeklong summer camp almost every year since its inception in 2003. The camp is designed to help student musicians of varying skill levels, from 14-year-olds to senior citizens. Instructors at the jazz camp include bassist Mark Dresser, trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos, saxophonist Charles McPherson, and pianist Mike Wofford, Hofmann’s husband. All are renowned San Diego musicians who tour world-wide. Other instructors hail from Los Angeles and the East Coast. A unique quality of the camp, Hofmann points out, is that two distinct sides of jazz, traditional and modern, are represented by the faculty.

The upcoming camp will welcome saxophonist Grace Kelly as a first-time instructor. Kelly, 23, is a Berklee College of Music graduate and a six-time DownBeat Critics Poll winner as a rising star in the alto sax category. She also has served as a jazz educator on U.S. State Departmentsponsored tours. This year’s camp runs June 19-25 on the La Jolla campus, with fifty to sixty students and eighteen instructors. Each student is assigned to one of at least eight teacher-led ensembles and receives individual instruction. Auditions are held after acceptance to the camp to determine student placement in the ensembles. “The very first day, everyone knows they have to put together a performance and have it ready by the end of the week,”

Hofmann said. “They have to be friendly and supportive, and become a band. Many students tell me that their favorite part of camp is the ensemble. Seeing them at the end of the week, you can tell why. Everybody’s nervous about performing, but they’re laughing and having a good time. They’ve become a band; they are on each other’s team.” Daniel Atkinson, director of the Department of Arts, Humanities, Languages, and Digital Arts for UC San Diego Extension, is the founder and director of Jazz Camp. Responsible, along with a panel of faculty members, for placing students in the ensembles and pairing them with instructors, he strives for each group to have a rhythm section of bass, piano, and drums. Atkinson hopes the percentage of women students at the camp will increase this year. “I’ve never been happy about the low number of girls and women in Jazz Camp,” he said. “I’ve questioned directors of other similar programs, and, unfortunately, there are a lot fewer women than men at the camps. Maybe part of it is the old image of jazz as a ‘guy thing.’ I’d love to end that perception.” “Each year, I go to a number of high school band competitions and see plenty of girls in the bands. Most are large ensembles, with as many as six saxophones and six trumpets. Fewer schools have smaller groups, though, and within those, fewer girls participate.”

Building confidence Bass player Angelica Pruitt, 16, has attended the last two UC San Diego Jazz Camps. A member of Mission Bay High School’s Preservationists, a well-respected Dixieland jazz band, she also plays classical music with the San Diego Youth Symphony. “Jazz Camp was really amazing,” Pruitt said. “Last year, my teacher, (pianist) Anthony Davis, gave me music that would challenge me. He believed I could do it. At first, I didn’t think I could, but by the end of the week, I was playing it.” Pruitt also would like to see more females at the camp. “In 2015, of the fifty-five students, only five or six were girls, including myself,” she said. “Friends from my school were there, both boys and girls, so that helped. But each ensemble had just one or two girls, so it was a little intimidating. I knew I could talk with Holly about things that I couldn’t with a male

“ If I can inspire a young woman to pursue jazz, I’ve made a contribution to the music.” —Holly Hofmann

instructor. I could talk to her about having more confidence.” Hofmann agrees having more females in the camp would increase their selfconfidence. Although she has had many male mentors—including trombonist Slide Hampton and bassist Ray Brown—she was usually the lone woman in the band. “It’s good for female students to have a woman’s perspective and comfortability,” Hofmann said. “It comes down to believing

“She was a source of inspiration and encouragement. I found the jazz camp to be a nonjudgmental and safe environment, where I felt free to learn and enjoy the full immersion of being surrounded by faculty. They are accomplished professionals, as well as gifted instructors.” Caci believes it is important to have positive role models like Hofmann, who— with her husband, Wofford—teaches many clinics at colleges and high schools while on tour. “All artists, especially those who make their living touring and recording, need to broaden the audience as much as we can,” Hofmann said. “We need young people to play this music. A lot of times, we can encourage people, especially young women, to enter jazz programs. If I can inspire a young woman to pursue jazz, I’ve made a contribution to the music.” n

in oneself. Whether they are in high school, college, or graduate school, women ask me, ‘Can I really do this for a living?’ They need to hear that they can.” Joyce Caci, a Carlsbad-based family therapist and flutist, attended the 2014 Jazz Camp. She was delighted to be in Hofmann’s ensemble. “Holly gave me some techniques that quickly improved my tone,” Caci, 62, said.

Better Research, Better Communities Voice of the Researcher:

JOSH SHAPIRO

When it comes to research, Josh Shapiro is less concerned about the subject matter than he is with the need. “I’m interested in any problem or issue that requires data,” said Shapiro, who serves as executive director of UC San Diego Extension’s Center for Research on the Regional Economy. “I really am agnostic about the topic as long as I know the research will make a difference.” That approach has allowed Shapiro to explore a wide variety of topics. Although his research is typically focused on workforce and economic development initiatives, he has been able to explore such subjects as advanced manufacturing, STEM (short for science, technology, engineering, and math) education, and the role of philanthropy

10

Spring 2016 | extension.ucsd.edu | (858) 534-3400

in economic development. He also has conducted community research studies for such neighborhoods as the Diamond District in Southeast San Diego and Downtown San Diego. Currently, Shapiro is working on a research project with the Integra Center, a facility that provides care to wounded veterans, to identify the challenges facing the amputees it serves and to help determine the programs and services they need most. While the topics might be diverse, the goal for Shapiro is the same: to leverage the research and data resources of UC San Diego for the benefit of the larger community. “The work of the university shouldn’t be thought of as esoteric,” he explained. “I want people to see that UC San Diego is really invested in helping the community—that we are using academic rigor to make a difference.” The work Shapiro has done in the Diamond District is particularly relevant to this mission. The Jacobs Center for

Neighborhood Innovation, which is working to revitalize Southeast San Diego, approached UC San Diego Extension about providing a framework to evaluate its efforts. Shapiro developed a community dashboard that looks at everything from crime statistics to education levels to employment gains. “They came to us and said: ‘We want to make sure we are moving the needle. We want to measure and track results over time,’” Shapiro said. “I give the Jacobs Center credit because they said they wanted data whether it was good, bad, or indifferent. Their attitude was: ‘If we are doing great, that’s good. If we aren’t, then we want to know that too. We need a constant feedback loop of data to understand and improve our impact in the community.’” Shapiro sees his work at the Jacobs Center representing a larger cultural shift in the nonprofit world. With the rise of big data and a demand for evidence-based

decision making, more nonprofits—and their funders—want to be able to demonstrate the impact of their work. “We have moved into an era where just having an important cause or an emotional story is not enough,” Shapiro said. “You need to demonstrate how you are making a difference as funders have become more impact driven. You need data to effectively tell your story.”

throughout San Diego through his work at

WIRED initiative, which works to improve regional economies through effective talentdevelopment strategies. “I saw the need for more academics to engage with a wider audience. I was able to find a space and create a job that exists between two worlds, enabling me to continue conducting high-quality academic research that directly impacts and influences the wider community.”

the Jacobs Center—many of which need help collecting, organizing, and analyzing their data in a systematic way. “After working with numerous nonprofits, I realized the directors and program managers were extremely smart and cared deeply about their mission, but none were trained in research and evaluation techniques. Data was an elusive necessity, and I figured I should try

“ Research demonstrates that a job is one of the most empowering forms of philanthropy.” —Josh Shapiro

Because of the demand for nonprofits to show—and not merely tell—how they are making a difference, Shapiro has developed a new certificate, Community Research and Program Evaluation, for UC San Diego Extension that will be launched in summer 2016. The 12-unit program will teach those at nonprofits how to design and implement a rigorous evaluation of their organizations’ work to demonstrate the benefits to the community and to their funders. Shapiro is convinced there is demand for this type of knowledge based on the response he has received from nonprofits

to help cultivate and empower nonprofits to improve their data with this important need,” Shapiro said of the new certificate. It’s not the first time Shapiro, who graduated from UC San Diego with a PhD in sociology, recognized there was a gap he could help close. With academic jobs few and far between, Shapiro realized he was going to have to get creative if he wanted to stay in San Diego. Using the research tools he developed in his sociological training, he pivoted as a graduate student to evaluation researchand became one of the core evaluators for the Department of Labor’s

Since then, he has worked on workforce development and economic-development studies, using much of that research to help guide UC San Diego Extension’s education and training programs to ensure they are meeting the needs of the region. “It is a question of what do employers want. What skills do people need?” Shapiro said. “There is incredible value in working to help close the job-skills gap. Research demonstrates that a job is one of the most empowering forms of philanthropy. It not only changes that person’s life, but also the successive generation.” n

Free College Test Prep Levels the Playing Field Voice of the Student:

MARK-YVES GAUNIN

12

Spring 2016 | extension.ucsd.edu | (858) 534-3400

Mark-Yves Gaunin had a specific goal in mind when it came to his SAT score. “I wanted to break 2,000 by my senior year,” said the Mar Vista High School junior. He met that goal—and exceeded it. “Instead I did it by my sophomore year.” Mark was able to boost his score from 1,570 in a pretest to 2,040 thanks, in part, to two rounds of free SAT preparation he received as part of the Fischer Scholarship program through his high school. The free test-prep program, which began in 2013, is made possible by William and Dolores Fischer, Imperial Beach residents who wanted to help improve the local community through education. Every semester, the scholarship selects up to 23 academically motivated students to take part in seven weeks of

intensive SAT instruction, including a four-hour pretest on the first week followed by three hours every Sunday. Wendy Hart, the Fischers’ daughter, said the program was born out of her parents’ desire to give back and their belief in the transformative nature of education, especially in underserved neighborhoods such as Imperial Beach. Hart said both came from modest backgrounds and worked hard, saving and investing their money wisely to amass a sizable nest egg Her father, who is 94, and her mother, who is 90, live nearby Mar Vista High, Hart said, so they pass by the campus regularly. “Every time we’d drive by, my dad would say: ‘God, I’d like to do something to help those kids,’” Hart said.

While the Fischers toyed with giving out college scholarships, they ultimately decided they could have a bigger impact on the students and the community by offering inperson SAT prep—a luxury few Mar Vista High families could afford. “My dad is practical, and he realized the SAT is something that was standing in the way of getting into college, and that these kids were striving against unbearable odds,” Hart said. Susanna Vega, a guidance counselor at the school, said the majority of students get free or reduced lunch because their family incomes are so low. Also, few of the parents are college graduates themselves so they don’t know about or understand the importance of the SAT or college acceptance. “There are no words for what this program does,” Vega said. Still, finding someone to teach the prep classes was easier said than done, Hart said. She spoke with every test-prep company she could find in the region, and their services simply didn’t meet the needs of the students and families of Imperial Beach. The various testing companies wanted the students to come to their facilities instead of being taught the course at the high school—a big stumbling block because few students would have the time or transportation to make the weekly trek. The companies also wanted to teach more kids, but with fewer hours of instruction; Hart was worried that would undercut the very mission of the scholarship program. “I just didn’t think they were going to offer the kids enough,” she said. By a stroke of luck, Hart said, she found out about UC San Diego Extension’s college test-prep offerings, which were being provided as part of its three-week Academic Connections precollegiate summer program. Hart quickly struck a deal

with Extension to teach 20-plus students— all of whom must go through a rigorous application process—the ins and outs of taking the SAT. With the help of the test-prep program, Hart said the majority of the students have achieved more than a 100-point increase in SAT scores, with many students making gains of 200 and 300 points.

Mark said he realizes the Fischer program has put him closer to his dream of attending a college with a strong engineering curriculum. “It was definitely important because without it I would not have been prepared for the SAT. I wouldn’t have known what questions to expect,” he said. “Nowadays, your SAT score partly defines where you can go.”

While the Fischers toyed with giving out college scholarships, they ultimately decided they could have a bigger impact on the students and the community by offering in-person SAT prep—a luxury few Mar Vista High families could afford. One student had completely given up on college, Hart recalled, because he was an abysmal test taker. “He was doing great work in the community and had great grades but could not take standardized tests,” she said. Through the Fischer Scholarship program, that student was able to increase his score by more than 300 points and is now at San Diego State University, Hart added. In Mark’s case, Hart said, he begged to be in the program as a freshman. Because of the grade level, Hart said she and her parents were initially apprehensive because they wanted to focus the program on sophomores and juniors. She and her parents, who review each application, were ultimately won over when Mark provided a compelling list of reasons he should be allowed to participate. On the first go-round, Mark boosted his score by 210 points, scoring a 1,780 on the SAT, but he felt he needed to improve further, so he applied for the Fischer Scholarship program again. Hart said, “He wrote a moving and emotional essay on why he felt he could achieve a much higher score with our help.”

It is for this reason, Hart said, the Fischers remain committed to funding the program because it is leveling the playing field “for this wonderful community of mostly low-income but extremely hard-working and highexpectation students.” Because of the scholarship program’s success, Hart said she wished more people would invest in similar efforts. She said as far as she knows the program is unique and that there is no other philanthropic effort to provide high-quality test prep to low-income students in either San Diego or Los Angeles. Recently, UC San Diego Extension entered into a partnership with San Diego Unified School District to offer free SAT/ACT prep at 12 local high schools to help students who might not otherwise be able to afford test prep. Hart said free test prep serves as a great equalizer in college admissions because it “brings up lower-income students to the level where they are armed with the same weapons and benefits” that more affluent students have available to them. “With this program, little by little, we are changing people’s college choices and, in the process, their lives,” she said. n Spring 2016 | extension.ucsd.edu | (858) 534-3400

An Environmental Balancing Act Voice of the Instructor:

KELLY RICHARDSON Attorney Kelly Richardson considers himself an environmentalist. He drives a Prius and uses solar energy to heat and light his house. But he also owns a truck he drives when he goes surfing, and he frequently flies around the country for work. He looks at his situation as a microcosm of the trade-offs that need to be made when it comes to the environment and regulation. “Life, in an environmental context, is all about balance,” said Richardson, who is a partner at the law firm of Latham & Watkins in San Diego and serves as cochair of its global chemical and contaminated-properties practice. For example, he said, the technology exists 14

to create the world’s most environmentally friendly toaster factory. The only problem is “we’d have to pay $10,000 for a toaster,” Richardson said jokingly. Because no one is willing to spend that much for a toaster, Richardson said, some compromises on the environmental front have to be made. “There is that constant balance in environmental regulation,” he said. “The pendulum swings back and forth.” Right now, Richardson said, he thinks society is in a pretty good place when it comes to striking the right environmental equilibrium. Take, for instance, the San Diego Bay. In 1960, Richardson said, the water quality was so bad from a variety of sources, including sewage spills, that the bay was in a constant state of quarantine. “You couldn’t even fish,” Richardson said.

Spring 2016 | extension.ucsd.edu | (858) 534-3400

Fast-forward to today—after years of remediation and regulation—and “no one remembers the bay being that bad,” he said. It’s not just San Diego that has improved environmental regulations. Richardson, who works for a wide variety of clients all over the country, sees how other cities and states are handling such issues as environmental site cleanups, storm water compliance, hazardouswaste management, and air quality. California, in particular, is ready to adopt a slate of new regulations this March that address everything from climate change to storm water runoff. Richardson draws on his more than two decades of legal experience for a course he teaches at UC San Diego Extension. Titled Environment, Land Use and Resources, the class aims to provide practical instruction on federal, state, and local environmental laws and how they govern land use, air, water,

“ There is that constant balance in environmental regulation. The pendulum swings back and forth.” —Kelly Richardson

soil, and hazardous waste as well as the permitting and enforcement that go along with those regulations. Richardson knows his way around those rules not just from a lawyer’s perspective. He got his start in the field by working for Mobil, the international oil company, in environmental compliance—a job he said he was able to secure with the help of a certificate in materials management from UCLA’s extension program. Although he had a bachelor’s of science in chemical engineering from UCLA, he found he didn’t have the real-world experience companies wanted. “It really propelled me,” Richardson said of his extension experience. “My learning curve would have been a lot different if I had to do on-the-job training.” In his work for Mobil as an environmental regulatory adviser, Richardson found himself around lawyers all the time, testifying at various hearings and enjoying the experience. “I love talking,” Richardson said with a shrug. He decided to take the plunge and go to law school at Georgetown University—all while working full time and being the father of three young children. It is not an experience Richardson would recommend. After graduation, Richardson did everything he could to make it back to Southern California, joining Latham & Watkins in San Diego because of its global reach in environmental law. Through that work, he has represented a variety of clients, from school districts to land owners to chemical companies, all grappling with issues of

environmental cleanup. He also has served as the cochair of the San Diego Bar Association’s environmental section. Richardson, who is also an adjunct law professor at University of San Diego, said he enjoys teaching and is looking forward to offering the type of real-world knowledge he gained to students in his class at UC San Diego Extension. With the help of colleagues, he said, he has developed a course that takes

participants through the ins and outs of such laws as the federal government’s Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act as well as the California Environmental Quality Act. It is no easy feat to make the often byzantine and complex regulatory world accessible and the lessons he teaches actionable, but Richardson said he enjoys the challenge. “Teaching is like playing chess in my favorite subject—the environment,” he said. n

Assuring Quality at Every Step

By JENNIFER DAVIES

Voice of the Employer:

SHAY TABANI

For Shay Tabani, the patient is always her top priority. She’s not a doctor or a nurse, but as vice president of quality assurance for Sorrento Therapeutics, a biopharmaceutical company in San Diego, her job is to make sure the medicines made by or on behalf of Sorrento meet the quality standards they purport to possess and are fit for their intended use. “We are all focused on the same goal— that the medicine going to the patient is safe and effective,” she said. “When it comes to medicine, it is not like buying a coat at Macy’s or Nordstrom, where you can return it if there is something wrong with it. It can be a matter of life and death, so it has to be right.” That is no easy task because Tabani must oversee every aspect of the quality program at Sorrento to assure that every

16

Spring 2016 | extension.ucsd.edu | (858) 534-3400

production lot manufactured by or on behalf of the company complies with regulatory mandates from the state as well as the Food and Drug Administration. She also must detail and review the procedures not just at Sorrento but also for Sorrento’s suppliers and service providers. “Quality assurance is looking at the dynamics of every single step of the process, from start to end, to ensure it meets acceptance criteria and that the right policies and procedures were followed to manufacture the drug or biological product,” she said. While that oversight might seem daunting to some, Tabani enjoys the challenge and works hard to stay abreast of the constantly changing regulatory field. “Learning never stops,” Tabani said. “Every day I go to work I learn something new.” Tabani, who received her degree in chemistry from the University of Karachi, got her professional start working in quality control for Peregrine Pharmaceuticals/Avid

Bioservices in Tustin. Her constant critique of systems and processes prompted her boss to tell her she should move over to the quality assurance side of the business, where she could design the procedures instead of testing them. “I was always going on about all the things that were wrong and how the existing processes should be improved,” she said with a laugh. To make that switch, she joined several professional organizations, including the American Society of Quality, and also participated in seminars, workshops, and other continuing education courses. One such course was the certified quality manager exam preparation course, which Irvine Valley College offered as part of its quality management professionals program. Tabani said that program as well as UC San Diego Extension’s regulatory affairs and quality assurance and control certificates are invaluable to anyone interested in the field. While at Avid Bioservices (then

“ If it is between a person with a bachelor’s degree and a person with a bachelor’s and a certificate, I will always pick the person with the certificate because I know they will have the relevant knowledge.” —Shay Tabani

named Peregrine Pharmaceuticals), she recommended to her teammates that they take courses at Extension to improve their knowledge of the regulatory industry. “It made a difference in both their performance and confidence,” Tabani said. Now at Sorrento Therapeutics, Tabani said she often struggles to find the right people with the relevant skillsets because many coming right out of college don’t have the proper industry training to be able to immediately start work. “There is a gap between academics and what the industry needs,” she said. Because of that, Tabani said those with certificates from UC San Diego Extension have an edge when it comes to being hired. “If it is between a person with a bachelor’s degree and a person with a bachelor’s and a certificate, I will always pick the person with the certificate because I know they will have the relevant knowledge,” she said. But a career in regulatory affairs is about more than knowledge. It is about having

Shay Tabani, Vice President of Quality Assurance, Sorrento Therapeutics

the right perspective and attitude about the work, Tabani said. She looks for people who are meticulous and conscientious but who are also team players. “I want to hire people who can get along and are not there to ‘get’ people, but who are there to do the right thing and to help people,” she said. That is particularly important with the work Sorrento Therapeutics is doing to develop treatments for cancer and the pain associated with it to help address unmet medical needs and improve the quality of life of patients. “For anyone who has had a family member or friend with cancer, they

know how difficult it is for the person suffering and how difficult it is to watch the suffering,” she said. Because of that mission, Tabani takes her job seriously and has tried to instill that commitment to her three children. “My kids have seen me work all these years, and I have always told them working hard is just not enough: honesty, integrity, and the passion to do the right thing must be integrated into each and everything we do. When you look at yourself in the mirror, it should not be hazy but clean and clear” she said. “It should always be clean and clear.” n

Share Your Story Jasmine Wang Hi! My name is Jasmine. I completed my undergrad at UC San Diego, and I’ve worked at Extension for 9 months now. When I’m at home, I like to doodle and draw, and dabble in design. At my happiest, I am holding some kind of mark-maker in my hand: a pencil, a stylus, a brush. Because of this, it is an awesome experience to manage the Art and Digital Arts programs. My favorite part about my job is that I am surrounded by creativity and am able to provide an opportunity for students to pursue a passion that I share. It is a gift to be able to help students find a creative outlet, or sometimes a new calling.

STEAM (Grades 5–12)

Test Prep (High School +)

Transfer Credit (Grades 11–12)

STEM is about science, technology, engineering and math. Adding art to this equation, STEM is transformed to STEAM, which is about using both sides of the brain for a well-rounded education. We recently added Sally Ride Science and the STEAM channel to our program lineup.

Students can prepare year-round for the ACT, SAT, GMAT, GRE, LSAT, and MCAT. Our Test Prep sessions provide the highest quality training without the high cost. They are available at UC San Diego and can also be customized and delivered onsite for your school or organization.

UC San Diego Master’s Degree Programs

What are UCSD Master’s Degrees? The following UCSD Master’s Degrees, also known as Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) programs—are fully accredited, graduate degrees for professionals, conferred by the University of California, San Diego and administered through Extension. Under a statewide project of the University of California, the MAS degree credential was introduced in January, 2001. Self-funded MAS degree programs are typically tailored to the lifestyle and level of experience of mid-career professionals and may be taken on a full or part-time basis.

Are there admission requirements? Yes, like any other graduate program, there are specific admission requirements for each degree program. This may be a combination of a related undergraduate degree, specified minimum GPA, relevant work experience, resume, letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose with the application. See individual program websites for details.

What are some of the benefits of the degree programs?

“ I use my knowledge in compliance and regulatory affairs all the time when creating quality agreement contracts between two organizations.”

Through the program curriculums students develop core competencies related to their fields of study. There are many networking opportunities with guest speakers, and individuals actively engaged in their respective healthcare careers.

—Joyce Reyes (Health Policy & Law Grad)

Do I need to take the GRE/GMAT? No, the GRE/GMAT is not required for admission to these programs.

Who are the faculty?
