Inspiring the Next Generation to Sally Ride’s science education legacy going strong at UC San Diego By MARGARET KING When Sally Ride made history in 1983 as the first American woman in space, she found herself suddenly famous. Being in the spotlight was uncomfortable for the low-key physicist. But as she traveled the country giving talks and meeting the public, one thought struck her. Her example was a powerful tool for getting young people, especially girls, excited about science. “Young girls need to see role models in whatever careers they may choose, just so they can picture themselves doing those jobs someday,” she said. Ride co-founded a company, Sally Ride Science, to inspire girls and boys to study science and to imagine themselves in science and technology careers. She used her high profile to champion science education until her death from pancreatic cancer in 2012. Now, UC San Diego has taken a lead role in continuing and expanding the pioneering astronaut’s education legacy. Sally Ride

Science became part of the university in October 2015. The new nonprofit, Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego, is overseen by UC San Diego Extension in partnership with San Diego Supercomputer Center and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. “Joining with UC San Diego gives us a golden opportunity to continue our mission of bringing science to life for generations to come,” said Tam O’Shaughnessy, Ride’s longtime partner and one of the founders of Sally Ride Science. Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego has already held summer workshops where nearly 400 girls delved into science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM). The program was the first phase of an ambitious plan to offer a variety of STEAM initiatives, including expanded workshops and professional development for teachers.

Shared Mission After retiring from NASA, Ride became a professor of physics at UC San Diego. Then in 2001, she joined O’Shaughnessy

and three other friends to found Sally Ride Science. O’Shaughnessy is executive director of the new Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego. Another of the company’s founders, UC San Diego space physicist Karen Flammer, is director of education. Ride and the other company founders understood that science and technology play growing roles in our daily lives and that more and more jobs require math and science skills. Yet research shows that girls and students from underserved communities tend to drift away from science, especially in middle school and high school. “This happens not because these students don’t like science or aren’t good at it,” O’Shaughnessy said. “It happens because of a lack of role models and subtle stereotypes that send the message that they don’t belong in science.” As a result, women and minorities are underrepresented in many science and technology fields. Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego works to empower girls and students from underserved groups to

That mission is in sync with UC San Diego’s goals and priorities, said Ed Abeyta, director of pre-college programs and assistant dean of community outreach for UC San Diego Extension. “A key goal of UC San Diego’s Strategic Plan is cultivating a diverse and inclusive university community that takes bold actions to ensure learning is accessible and affordable for all,” Abeyta said. “Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego connects directly to this goal by giving students access to worldclass courses and programming taught by some of the best faculty at UC San Diego.”

Students became more adventurous as the workshops went on, said Debi Kilb, a Scripps Institution seismologist who is science director for the Junior Academy. “I watched many girls grow more confident about asking questions and exploring the hands-on teaching units.” UC San Diego Extension, the Supercomputer Center, and Scripps joined to develop the academy curriculum and provide instructors. The workshops incorporated profiles of diverse scientists from Sally Ride Science’s Cool Careers book series. To broaden the academy’s reach, San Diego Unified School District worked with UC San Diego Extension to

UC SAN DIEGO’S ASTRONAUT CONNECTION CONTINUES By Margaret King Sally Ride isn’t the only pioneering female astronaut with a close connection to UC San Diego. Kate Rubins, who recently returned (Oct. 29) from a four-month stay on the International Space Station, is a UC San Diego graduate. Rubins, 38, received her bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from UC San Diego in 1999. She earned her PhD in cancer biology from Stanford University in 2005. In August, Rubins became the first person to sequence DNA in space. She successfully sequenced mouse DNA that had been analyzed on Earth. The goal was to make sure the sequencing technology works in microgravity. NASA hopes to send DNA sequencers on deep-space voyages so astronauts can quickly identify any pathogens on

When Sally Ride Science joined UC San Diego, some of the young women approached Flammer about starting a campus club. “They were passionate about the importance of the role models and mentors they had when they were in middle school or high school,” Flammer said. “They want to do as much as they can to provide mentorship for others.”

STEAM Conversations

To support Sally Ride Science’s mission and programs, undergraduates at UC San Diego have formed an official club called Tritons for Sally Ride Science.

Tools for Teachers Before joining UC San Diego, Sally Ride Science created an acclaimed training program for teachers. Flammer, the director of education, said Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego will put this expertise to use by launching new professional development programs for elementary and middle school teachers. Later this year, UC San Diego Extension plans to offer two online courses developed by Sally Ride Science. The courses, available for college credit, will guide educators in how to teach science effectively and how to use diverse role models to ignite student interest in STEAM studies and careers. 10

Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego is also creating an in-person training program to help teachers integrate STEAM content with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), adopted by California in 2013. The first session, to be held December 3 in partnership with Scripps Institution’s Birch Aquarium, will focus on Earth’s climate. “Teachers now are in search of content that is engaging for students and is aligned to the NGSS,” Flammer said. “We want to deliver professional development using topicbased content that supports the standards and highlights relevant to STEAM careers.”

While many Sally Ride Science initiatives focus on local students, the program is expanding its reach with an online video series. The Constellation: Sally Ride Science Conversations offers interviews with women in the University of California system doing important work in STEAM fields. The videos are available on UCTV’s STEAM Channel, which UC San Diego Extension manages. The first two segments profile oceanographer Margaret Leinen, director of Scripps Institution, and Beth Simon, a computer-science educator at UC San Diego. To complement the video profiles, Sally Ride Science is offering a series of online articles about UC women making news in science and technology. O’Shaughnessy’s “Tam on STEAM” series follows the career paths of remarkable female scientists as they share the excitement and rewards of their work.

Research Vessel Sally Ride In a stroke of serendipity, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography recently welcomed America’s newest oceanographic research vessel, which is named in Ride’s honor. The state-of-the-art R/V Sally Ride will use powerful sensors to explore the oceans. Scripps plans a variety of educational outreach programs focused on the ship. A Birch Aquarium exhibit will offer virtual ship tours and videos of crewmembers at work. A satellite telepresence system will allow teachers and students to interact with scientists at sea. Melissa Miller, a marine technician who is the ship’s historian and blogger, said she hopes “to get the broader community to engage in the research objectives and findings of R/V Sally Ride.” n

Bringing Wellbeing to the World Deepak Chopra teams up with UC San Diego on new UC Wellbeing Channel

Deepak Chopra wants to beam himself into your living room. He’ll be there to help you meditate, or improve your breathing techniques, or understand your relationship to the universe. The technology is almost there. Perhaps in two years, he predicts, a person in China will be able to project Chopra’s hologram into that person’s own house. Lately, Chopra has become deeply immersed in the worlds of augmented and virtual reality, looking for ways to increase the power of his message and the size of his audience. One of the world’s most famous proponents of integrative medicine is also determined to diversify his reach—and he’s hoping his latest partnership with UC San Diego will help him accomplish this goal. The project is called the UC Wellbeing Channel, and it will air on University of California Television (UCTV), the UC system’s television service managed by UC San Diego Extension. 12

“I think we can reach millions of people if not tens of millions of people,” said the 68-year-old co-founder of the Carlsbad-based Chopra Center. “Usually what happens within academia stays within academia. With UCTV, we can take academia to the world.” Starting this fall, the channel will air a steady stream of interviews with leading experts, from the UC San Diego School of Medicine and elsewhere, on topics ranging from neuroplasticity to yoga to nutrition to personal relationships. Chopra will conduct some of the interviews himself. The partnership also involves the company Jiyo, a wellbeing website and smartphone app that will promote the new UCTV channel. Dr. Paul Mills, a professor of Family Medicine and Public Health and director of the Center of Excellence for Research and Teaching in Integrative Health at UC San Diego School of Medicine,

serves as the channel’s director, overseeing content. The Center of Excellence, working closely with the UC San Diego Center for Integrative Medicine, is a hub for research excellence and collaboration in integrative health within UC San Diego and across the greater San Diego region. “Whether it’s meditating or practicing yoga or managing stress and nutrition, there is infinitude of content out there,” Mills said. “We’re identifying experts in these different domains and bringing them together under one heading, one roof. The new channel will curate existing UC content relevant to wellbeing as well as partner with other institutions and experts for content to offer viewers an unparalleled resource of knowledge and inspiration to support their own wellbeing.” For Chopra, the calculus is simple: joining forces with UC San Diego gives him access to the university’s deep pool of

Marcus, chair of the university’s Department of Family Medicine and Public Health, announced that the school has “also been working on concepts of wellbeing surrounding our new Institute for Public Health” and “will be lecturing in the new course on Integrative Medicine and Public Health being developed for the Bachelor of Science and Public Health.” The partnership comes as many of Chopra’s insights—documented in his best-selling books and popularized by celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey—are gaining more credence within the medical profession. Chopra, for instance, was an early proponent of mindfulness, a method

knowledge and talent while providing UC San Diego with all the benefits that come with exposure to Chopra’s global following. “I think the more collaborative we can be, the better for all of us,” Chopra said. “We have a huge resource at UC San Diego and UCTV for bringing some of the academic experts and their knowledge to a broader audience that would really benefit from any insight into health, into wellbeing, and into longevity backed by credible research and academic authority.” The UC Wellbeing Channel is just the latest of Chopra’s affiliations with UC San Diego School of Medicine. This past spring, he became a full professor. In recent years, he’s also provided training and given lectures about wellbeing to some of the school’s students and staff. Lately, he’s been offering tips to faculty about how to avoid burnout in the medical profession.

of using positive thoughts and other techniques to make your brain function in a healthier way. The benefits of mindfulness are now widely accepted within medical and academic circles. Programming on the UC Wellbeing Channel, which can be found on cable and online, will include discussions with several prominent faculty members at UC San Diego School of Medicine, including Dr. William Mobley, chair of the Department of Neurosciences and one of the world’s leading experts in Alzheimer’s disease and Down syndrome, and Rob Knight, a pediatrics professor and one of the world’s top experts in microbiomes. The channel will also include content from numerous other faculty across the UC campus system, including UC San Francisco and UCLA wellbeing and integrative medicine programs. The channel debuted on the web with a 40-minute Chopra lecture titled, appropriately, “A Guided Meditation for the University of California Community.” In the lecture, Chopra calls meditation “the most effective technique for stress management” and, among other things, offers some tips on good ways to meditate. Attaining self-reflection through meditation, for instance, involves closing your eyes and asking yourself questions such as, “Who am I?” and “What am I grateful for?” and then noting the sensations, images, feelings, and thoughts that enter your mind spontaneously. “I like to think of stress as similar to surfing,” he says in the lecture. “If you’re a good surfer, then every wave is exhilaration. If you’re not prepared, then every wave is disaster.”

These techniques and analogies will sound familiar to Chopra’s devotees, of which there are many. He estimates he reaches an audience of roughly 15 million people through social-media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. That list of platforms now includes Jiyo. The website and smartphone app analyze data from your various devices and then offer tips on sleep, nutrition, personal growth, exercise, and relationships. These tips come in the form of videos, articles, social-media posts, and other formats.

Chopra calls the app “your personal wellbeing coach, or as I like to say, your better half.” Poonacha Machaiah, who co-founded Jiyo with Chopra and serves as its chief executive officer, said the purpose is to “democratize health and wellness.” “It’s like an Instagram or Facebook for wellbeing,” Machaiah said. It is Chopra’s willingness to embrace new technologies, from social media to virtual reality, that has helped make him such a famous figure. “Over the last 30 years, I’ve been very active in social media and media in general,” Chopra says. “I feel we are now in a position to take the amazing work that has been happening in academia out to the world. It’s a bit cliché to ask someone who works in filmmaking, “What’s your favorite movie?” But you have to do it. Carlos de los Rios doesn’t hesitate: Casablanca. “I sound like an old man saying Casablanca,” he said with a laugh. “I love a lot of films, but to me, Casablanca just sort of has it all. The classic writing, it’s got the love story, the crisp back-and-forth lines.” De los Rios, who’ll be teaching Screenwriting II and a new course called Building Your Screenwriting Career during UC San Diego Extension’s winter quarter, has been making films since he was in high school, when he’d recruit friends to act in short spoofs inspired by Saturday Night Live sketches. The films were good enough to get him accepted into USC’s prestigious film writing program, which grants admission to only 24 students a year, and where de los Rios learned from greats such as Julius Epstein, who co-wrote Casablanca, and Michael Creighton. John Singleton, a couple

years shy of his debut film, Boyz n the Hood, was de los Rios’ freshman-year advisor. Though de los Rios was a self-described “drama geek king” in high school, he decided to pursue screenwriting because it was the piece of the movie-making puzzle that posed the biggest challenge. A screenplay is a film’s blueprint, guiding every aspect of its creation. “Every department, whether it’s props or costumes, the place they go to figure out what they’re doing, they go to the script,” he said. De los Rios graduated from USC in 1993 and spent the next several years working on scripts and building relationships in Hollywood. His big break was the 2000 film Playing Mona Lisa, starring Alicia Witt (Urban Legend) as a down-on-herluck concert pianist who’s forced to move back home to live with her parents, played by Marlo Thomas and Elliot Gould. The film, which was produced by Touchstone Pictures, was an adaptation of the play Two Goldsteins on Acid, written by de los Rios’ wife, Marni Freedman.

“We had a great time,” he said. “We won a bunch of awards; it made a lot of money. It wasn’t a gigantic hit of any kind, but it certainly got us going. I never looked back— I just kept going.” Of the films de los Rios has made, none has been entirely his own—and that’s not unusual in Hollywood, he said. Many screenwriters work collaboratively, either with a producer or director who has rough ideas for a film and needs someone to build the story. They might be paired with another screenwriter to develop a script, or hired as a “script doctor” to fix up a screenplay that’s not quite there yet. Since 2007, de los Rios has partnered with director Lawrence Roeck, helping bring Roeck’s ideas to life. In 2007, the two made The Forger, which stars a young Joshua Hutcherson—who went on to play Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games—and Lauren Bacall in her last role before her death in 2014. De los Rios said that working with Bacall was “an honor.” Last year, he and Roeck finished Diablo, a western thriller starring Clint Eastwood’s son, Scott Eastwood, and Danny Glover. Diablo won best feature at the 2015 San Diego Film Festival. De los Rios and Roeck are currently working on two more films: Demigods, which is slated for a 2018 release, and The Crags, about an eccentric scientist who goes missing after inheriting a large amount of money. While there are plenty of successful solo screenwriters—and writer/directors, such as Quentin Tarantino and Richard Linklater— de los Rios urges his students to embrace a collaborative approach to, as he puts it, “take away some of the loneliness from the process.” “When someone’s hitting a rough patch— there’s a flaw in their storyline and the writer’s not feeling so great—I’ll turn to the group and say: ‘Hey, this is all of our script. Where’s

the ideas here?’ I make the group take responsibility for each other’s work. That’s what I’m trying to do—I try to make it a community.” A broad mix of students take de los Rios’ classes. Some are undergrads fulfilling a requirement. Others are older students who might be thinking about a career switch. And, often, he’ll have students who’ve already completed a screenplay and are looking to hone their craft and see if they can create a marketable product. One piece of advice he gives them: write for yourself—don’t write the film you think Hollywood wants. “You should really think to yourself, ‘What would I watch?’ You should create the product you yourself would actually buy,” he said. And, just because a film has been done before doesn’t mean there’s not an opportunity for a fresh take. “The appetite [in Hollywood] is a lot bigger than the supply” of screenplays, he said. “I still think there’s a lot of room out there. It’s still going to be a story about war, or two brothers fighting each other, or two neighbors that don’t get along, or the hero versus an awful villain. There’s always a new skin to put on this skeleton, and that’s where the individuality of the writer comes in.” And even if you don’t aspire to write the next Casablanca, learning what makes a good screenplay—its demand for structure and precise, vivid language—can have a transformative effect not only on how you approach writing, but also on your appreciation of film as an art form. “I think people can walk away and go, ‘Now I’m watching movies and I’m seeing things I never saw before,’” de los Rios said, “and there’s a pleasure in that regardless of whether you ever actually intend to write a screenplay.” n

Kalish Brothers guide food safety efforts

There’s something about cheese that inspires twins Charlie and Michael Kalish. Cheese is mysterious. Cheese is everevolving, its taste and texture changing every day. The brothers know almost everything there is to know about cheese, and yet they feel as if they know nothing at all. “You can get so much information from a cheese from your nose, your mouth, your touch, but it’s always just really scratching the surface,” Michael said. “It’s something that really captures the passage of time and all the good things that can come from it.” The twins credit their obsession with cheese to travels that have taken them all over the United States and Europe and landed them a role as competitors on Season 7 of the Food Network show The Great Food Truck Race, and even their own new show called Big Cheese. And, in an indirect way, cheese is responsible for their current business, Food Safety Guides, a consulting firm that helps businesses in the food-services industry keep their products safe for human consumption. Their firm has grown quickly, in part because a sweeping 2011 federal law has created a whole new set of safety regulations designed to reduce food contamination. This fall, the 34-year-old brothers are teaching a class at UC San Diego Extension on ways for business owners to comply

with this new law, called the Food Safety Modernization Act. The twins grew up in Marin County, just north of San Francisco, and shared plenty of the same interests, from surfing to cooking. But they probably would have pursued completely different careers if not for Michael’s early fascination with the subject of cheese. And cheese is what reunited them as young adults just as each prepared to go his separate way. “It’s a surprise that we went in such different directions and ended up in the same place,” Charlie said. After college, Charlie, who majored in literature at UC Santa Barbara, received a Fulbright Fellowship to study 19th century Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. His studies took him to Norway. Meanwhile, Michael was traversing the plains and alpine pastures of Europe, immersed in the world of cheese. After graduating from the same college as his twin, Michael worked a variety of different jobs. He taught math for a bit. He worked in a winery. Eventually, he began apprenticing on a cheese farm and delivered cheeses to high-end establishments, including the famous Napa Valley restaurant The French Laundry. At his employer’s recommendation, he eventually took a job on a farm in France. He wound up staying in Europe for four years, working on a dozen different farms in France, Italy, and Switzerland. He worked with cows, goats, and sheep. He apprenticed for some cheese-aging facilities, spending long hours in cheese-storage caves, where the temperatures hovered around 50 degrees. He fell in love with all the best cheeses: the Gruyeres, the Camemberts, the Gorgonzolas, the fresh goat cheeses. He invited his brother, who was in Norway, to come work with him in France’s

Rhone Alps, aging cheese in an underground train tunnel for a French affineur, the name for a professional cheese ager. “I joined him in that cave, turning cheeses and learning about cheese as it develops over time and how to take care of it,” Charlie said. Charlie began to notice some parallels between the making of cheese and the typical arc of an Ibsen play. If there’s an error during the initial preparation of cheese, it is inevitable during the aging process that the mistake—like the past of the protagonist in an Ibsen drama—will return

They help their clients create what Michael describes as “a roadmap for them to either develop or revamp their food-safety plan.” It is a process that usually requires a client to develop a rigorous, detailed standard operating procedure for handling, preparing, and distributing its products. At UC San Diego Extension, their training sessions will help businesses comply with the dozens of new regulations created by the 2011 law. As Charlie noted, one of the primary objectives of the Food Safety Modernization Act is to “shift food

By the end of that summer, “I was hooked,” Charlie said. He switched careers and joined his brother, a decision he has never regretted. The twins eventually returned to the United States with hopes of opening their own cheese-aging facility in the San Francisco Bay Area. They realized, however, that their work in the cheese industry had also made them experts in something else: the process of keeping it safe. By chance, they found themselves helping a creamery draft its food safety plan. One consulting gig led to another, then another. “We began the process of making food safety affordable and accessible to anyone and everyone,” Michael said. Four years later, they have clients all over the country as well as in Australia. They work with businesses at every level of the food-supply chain, from growers and manufacturers to distributors, restaurants, and supermarket chains.

When not helping others design and implement food safety rules, the Kalish brothers are hosting their own show on Food Network about their first love, cheese. The brothers hit the road, visiting cities around the country with one goal in mind: to discover the most memorably delicious cheese dish in each city and crown it “The Big Cheese.” They taste a variety of unique and mouth-watering chef creations, from a traditional cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper pasta) to an out-of-the-box macaroni and cheese pizza and even a few sweet, cheesy creations. safety systems away from responding to food safety incidents to preventing them from occurring in the first place.” The Food and Drug Administration estimates that these new regulations will affect about 83,819 food facilities, requiring them to institute numerous new food safety requirements as well as keep detailed records of their compliance. The twins have a few side gigs, too, some of which they mention on their website, cheesetwins.com. Charlie is a contributor to Cheese Connoisseur and Deli Business magazines. Michael teaches workshops on cheese-making and affinage, a French term for the cheese-aging process. They also participated in and won the Food Network’s The Great Food Truck Race, hosted by celebrity chef Tyler Florence. The name of their team, fittingly enough: The Grilled Cheese All-Stars. Each, of course, has his own favorite cheese. Charlie’s is a cheese called Harbison, made by Jasper Hill Farm in Vermont. Michael’s is fresh goat cheese. Of all the foods Charlie and Michael work with, cheese remains the one that excites, stimulates, and mystifies them the most. “I think it’s still something that we still don’t understand very well,” Michael said. “With all my experience and knowledge on the topic, I still feel there’s a universe I just don’t know about cheese.” n

By JENNIFER DAVIES The term “process improvement” might sound dry, but if the concept is done well, it can save time and money. In fact, it even has the potential to save lives. That was the lesson of a new partnership between UC San Diego Extension and the City of San Diego that helped city staff find ways to reduce 911 wait times, expedite street light maintenance, and improve customer service for libraries and infrastructure projects. These changes resulted from city staff’s participation in a process improvement training program known as Lean Six Sigma that UC San Diego Extension offers. Companies around the globe use the principles of Lean Six Sigma to identify problems and deliver data-driven solutions. Almis Udrys, director of the city’s Performance and Analytics Department, said he saw the UC San Diego Extension’s Lean Six Sigma training as a way to help city staff begin to look at the issues facing the City of San Diego in new ways. 18

Lean Six Sigma training helps city workers “I see this training as opening a door to a new culture at the city—a culture that embraces innovation, data-enabled decision making, and a commitment to continuous improvement,” Udrys said. “It really is an extension of Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s vision for a city government that is as innovative as the people it serves.” The city sent seven of its employees through the 16-week program. The projects resulted in a variety of improvements, including: Reduced emergency call times: By revising the information input screen and automating a portion of the call process, a working group from the Fire-Rescue Department was able to reduce the length of 90 percent of calls by 16 seconds in the first few months—a 16 percent improvement compared to the same time period a year ago. The city calculated that the reduced call times have the potential to save an estimated additional 22 lives annually.

Improved library material delivery: To reduce the wait times for library patrons to receive requested books and other materials, one team analyzed how to improve the material sorting process. By identifying and cutting out a step in the sorting process that consumed a significant amount of time and motion, the team was able to come up with a simplified process to increase its productivity by 42 percent, which was valued at an estimated $121,953 of annual cost avoidance in terms of staff time. Faster street light maintenance: A team from the Transportation and Storm Water Department created a new workflow system that reduced the lead time for street light maintenance by about three days and resulted in an estimated $15,000 in savings. In follow-on phases, further efficiencies will be gained via the elimination of paper order forms. Improved operations at the Public Works Customer Service Center: By eliminating paper forms, transitioning

improve customer service and boost efficacy. to newer technologies, and eliminating unnecessary steps in the process, a team from the Transportation and Storm Water Department was able to shorten the time it takes to handle customer complaints. The changes also resulted in an estimated cost avoidance of around $113,000 per year and improved communication with customers. Barbara Lamb, a program manager for the city, spearheaded the efforts to reduce 911 call time waits. She said the Lean Six Sigma tools were invaluable not only in engaging all the stakeholders, but also for crunching historical data to come up with what she called an “elegant solution.” As for the results of the project, Lamb summed it up in one word: “priceless.” “A major reason we all work for the City of San Diego is that we want to make the community a better place,” she said. “To be able to do something that has a potential to save 22 lives a year, it really is priceless.” The goal of the program is for each participant to take the lessons they learned

through Lean Six Sigma to other city departments to help them improve efficiency and how they serve their customers: the citizens of San Diego. “As you know, sometimes in government, change is not easily welcomed,” said Maureen Jugar, a program manager at the city who worked on a project for expedited streetlight maintenance. “With the culture of Lean Six Sigma, you have the tools to help others discover ways to do things more efficiently. It doesn’t just apply to work. It can apply to your home, to your kids, to your friends. It can apply to just about anything.” That is the goal, Udrys said, to apply the lessons learned in Lean Six Sigma to tackle any number of issues facing the city. “The results of this program really add up, which is why Mayor Faulconer and the City Council have been so supportive of our efforts,” Udrys said. “Every productivity gain, no matter how small, means a better experience for each resident, in line with the

city’s mission to effectively serve and support our San Diego community.” Hugo Villar, director of Business, Science and Technology at UC San Diego Extension, said the partnership with the City of San Diego is part of Extension’s larger mission to ensure that organizations and individuals have the skills they need to bolster the region’s economy and quality of life. “In this rapidly changing world, we know employees need to constantly add new skills to advance their careers and to benefit the organizations where they work,” Villar said. “Our Lean Six Sigma courses enable people to identify problems and come up with innovative solutions, which ultimately allow them to better serve customers and clients. It is important that a research university such as UC San Diego provides access to the most current organizational tools and knowledge to benefit the citizens of San Diego. This partnership is a clear example of how we are doing just that.” n

Offered for the first time online as part of the Facilities Management certificate, this course is designed to provide students with good understanding of building components and systems to maintain and manage them well, including structure, building envelope, mechanical and electrical systems, and fire and life safety systems.

Learn about the permitting process and examine how air pollution affects the environment. STEM is about science, technology, engineering, and math. Adding art to this equation, and STEM is transformed to STEAM, which is about using both sides of the brain for a well-rounded education. We recently added Sally Ride Science @UC San Diego and the STEAM Channel to our program lineup.

Students can prepare year-round for the ACT, SAT, GMAT, GRE, LSAT, and MCAT. Our test prep sessions provide the highest quality training without the high cost. They are available at UC San Diego and can also be customized and delivered on-site for your school or organization.

We now offer lower division transfer credit courses in such subjects as math, biology, psychology, philosophy, sociology, and marine biology to qualified high school juniors and seniors. Transfer credit courses are equivalent to regular UC San Diego undergraduate courses and are transferable for units/subject credit towards bachelor’s degrees at all UC campuses.

UC San Diego Master’s Degree Programs

What are UC San Diego Master’s Degrees? The following UC San Diego Master’s Degrees, also known as Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) programs—are fully accredited, graduate degrees for professionals, conferred by the University of California San Diego and administered through Extension. Under a statewide project of the University of California, the MAS degree credential was introduced in January, 2001. Self-funded MAS degree programs are typically tailored to the lifestyle and level of experience of midcareer professionals and may be taken on a full- or part-time basis.

Are there admission requirements? Yes, like any other graduate program, there are specific admission requirements for each degree program. This may be a combination of a related undergraduate degree, specified minimum GPA, relevant work experience, résumé, letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose with the application. What are some of the benefits of the degree programs? Through the program curriculums, students develop core competencies related to their fields of study. There are many networking opportunities with guest speakers, and individuals actively engaged in their respective healthcare careers.

Do I need to take the GRE/GMAT?

No, the GRE/GMAT is not required for admission to these programs.

Mission Valley Center (MVC) The Mission Valley Center is closed and all courses previously held there have moved to the University City Center location.

Through a reciprocal arrangement with the University, UC San Diego Extension offers a limited number of student grant vouchers to full-time UC San Diego students. Each quarter, vouchers are distributed on a firstcome, first-served basis and are good for up to $500 off of one course (students pay anything over that amount). Note: 10 percent student discount and early enrollment discount do not apply. Undergraduate students: present a valid student ID card at the Extension Student Services office between November 14-18, 2016. Graduate students, pharmacy students, and medical students: please contact the Graduate Division, Skaggs School of Pharmacy, and School of Medicine for specific information.
