PROJECT 1: 15% Defining Liminality | Site Analysis & Site Reaction INTRODUCTION The phenomena of urban sprawl can be understood in relation to the division of town and country. It is characterised by low-density development and decentralisation and differs from the typical spatial organisation of a city. However, the town of Meru, Klang challenges the traditional concept of town and country, as well as that of the urban sprawl. Within this urban fabric, there lies three different configurations: the developed area of Setia Alam, the rural area of Pekan Meru and Meru industrial park. The sprawl into the rural areas has created a form of development that is neither urban nor rural. It is the liminality of the area. Liminality is defined as a point of transition or a juncture between Community, Climate and City (+ Crises). The design project aims to answer to current crises such as Covid-19 in particular, as well as other existing themes we face today, via design thinking and research to re-think the typology of architecture. The site context of Meru, Klang portrays the liminality of the urbanisation and the transition of urban & rural.

UNIT C design projects will be organised into three thematic projects to guide students in the formulation of i) a research topic & site analysis; ii) conceptual planning of the urban, and iii) the final design proposal. The thematic flow of the project is: ‘Liminality’ - ‘Neue-norms’ - ‘Crisis’

LEARNING OUTCOMES UPON COMPLETION OF THIS MODULE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO – AR 518 Architecture Design Studio 05 AR 718 Integrated Architecture Design Project 06

CLO1- Interpret an urban context into recognisable urban strategy with the site and program planning (C2, PLO1) CLO1- Study in-depth understanding of site context and impending issue. (A3, PLO4) CLO2- Demonstrate design Strategy in response to social/economic/cultural issues with program(s) and architectural intervention. (P4, PLO6)

TASKS

TASK 1A- SITE ANALYSIS OF MERU, KLANG (GROUP) CONTEXTUAL LAYERING - Each group (5 nos) will conduct a site analysis which includes layering diagrams and a written analysis of designated topics (each group to have minimum 3 pages of well-elaborated analyses) to be compiled into an A3 ‘Site Report’ portrait format. The following groups are: 1. the historical context and its crises (Group Aainaa) o History and urban morphology of Meru, Klang- the rural/urban discourse and integration with the industrial sites (past, present, future) o Identification of past, present and future crises o Q- What are the significant issues, threats or challenges imposed to the industries, industrial workers’ community, local community and their regional culture? (suggested list of crises) 2. the demographics and the socio-cultural context (Group Ar. Norizan) o cultural mapping o socio-cultural analysis o civic and public amenities (availability of public spaces / cultural integration or disintegration) o Q- What are the significance of the industrial park to the local culture and the social values, and how does the crisis impact Meru? 3. the existing architectural typologies (Group Taufiq) o Figure ground or building footprint o Building/land-use/zoning o Housing or collective living possibilities Prepared by Aainaa Suhardi

o Utilitarian infrastructure o Landmarks, nodes o Q- What are the urban-rural infrastructural challenges, and do we need a new typology to address them? the urban planning and mapping (Group Ar. Hisham) o Urban morphology o Urban fabric and topography o Accessibility (vehicular & pedestrian) and route networks o Future development of the site by investors or the government o Q- How can this issue be contextualised in the whole urban context and also facilitate the crisis condition? the site demarcation and site section with surrounding context (Group Ashran) o Site plan + Boundary Lines + Building Setback o Major site sections and elevations o 3D Model of the Site in Sketchup file (do not exceed 20MB size) o Building heights/density/plot ratio/legal and planning matters o Q- What are the possible design parameters of the site in response to the crises?

*SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS (TASK 1A) All presentations will be conducted online. Prepare the necessary for the online presentation format (MIRO format presentation). TASK 1B- A ‘WARM UP’ DESIGN-THINKING PROPOSAL (INDIVIDUAL) PUBLIC SPACES IN 15-MINUTES CIRCLE (ARCASIA-PAM COMPETITION, CLOSING DATE OF SUBMISSION: 15TH AUGUST 2021) Quotations from the competition brief; “A "15-minute life circle" is focused on the home and encompasses the entire area that can be covered in 15 minutes by walking at a regular pace. Due to the urban morphology and topography passing through, the boundary of one 15-minute life circle frequently takes on an uneven shape.” “The 15-minute life circle has body characteristics, everyday performance, and social elements for everyone, regardless of individual variances. This competition encourages students to suggest solutions to challenges in their 15-minute life circle and public space from both physical and social viewpoints. The project's programme and design are adaptable to any level and scale.” “The project could be a renovation of an urban fragment, a garden regeneration, a neighbourhood connection installation, a kid-friendly urban renewal, and so on. In this competition, students are urged to observe their cities, identify the challenges, plan the programme, and provide a responsive solution.” Prepared by Aainaa Suhardi

This competition benefits our design programme by understanding the specific balance between individual and collective spaces, and their direct link to the rural-urban conditions. The individual proposals will attempt to identify how ideas of collective living in a community are related to the production of the past; how domesticity has changed today; how crisis effects the spatial organisation at both urban and architectural scales; and to re-think public spaces within current challenges. *SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS (TASK 1B) ONE (1) A1 board in portrait/landscape format comprising the following items: 1. Your proposed 15-minutes circle of your chosen site showing; i. location plan, site plan & site planning strategies (site: Meru, Klang). 2. Minimum one cross section or elevation showing diagrammatic program. 3. Visual interpretation of the public space (to show the physical and social perspectives) in photo montages or perspectives or other illustrations. 4. Descriptions of the project's name, background and context, problems and needs defined, the ideas and concept in 300 to 500 words. Submission of Design Proposal Deadline- 29th JULY 2021
