PROJECT 2: 25% | Literature Review Towards Architectural Spatial Concepts | INTRODUCTION Unit C uses narrative inquiries, illustrations, and models to approach design from a thinking and research perspective. Following the site analysis of Hulu Langat and the development of the different narratives in P1, the project challenges architectural spatial concepts in an attempt to expand our understanding of design. In the context of current Crises (plural; (n.) crises) at the global, macro, and micro scales, these are centred on community identities and public engagement by being adaptive, resilient, and progressing into the new future. Unit C sets to provide a place of conversation on the series of anthropological (communities and cultures) and urban morphological studies (history and building typologies), and the notions of rehabilitation of settlements, relief and disaster management and restructuring of infrastructures. Project 2 will determine your individual’s project design intent, direction and project outcome of final project (P3). All the tasks and assignments issued throughout the semester must be interrelated. The research theories, site analysis, findings, design interests carried out in P1 & P2 are vital in developing your final proposal.

LEARNING OUTCOMES UPON COMPLETION OF THIS MODULE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO – AR 518 Architecture Design Studio 05

AR 718 Integrated Architecture Design Project 06

CLO2- Apply digital communication skills to communicate design intention and strategy. CLO3- Demonstrate the application of Uniform Building By Law and local authority requirement in design proposal. CLO1- Study in-depth understanding of site context and impending issue. (A3, PLO4) CLO2- Demonstrate design Strategy in response to social/economic/cultural issues with program(s) and architectural intervention. (P4, PLO6)

TASKS

TASK 2A- Speculative: Literature Review towards Architectural Spatial Concepts in Drawings & Models- an A2 drawing board and a conceptual model (3 weeks) You need to produce a thorough research based on selected literature reviews via drawings and models to illustrate your architectural reaction based on the following themes: COMMUNITY-RESILIENCE DESIGN or LANDSCAPE RURALISM or CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION. These narrations act as a vital methodology for driving architectural thinking through reading and design exploration. You will be asked to interpret your narratives based on the chosen theme and design procedures with the aim of imagining your own speculative design solutions. Ultimately, you will learn how to define the setting and building design, and to create a compelling architectural concept.

TASK 2B- Micro site analysis- individual site strategies- A3-sized drawings and schematic models showing design intentions (2 weeks) Design a checklist of site planning strategy is listed below as guidelines to prepare individual planning strategies for project 3. Each student must examine, select and critically analyse the relevant factors that are significant and relevant to your individual proposed programmes & site strategies. In this task, you must select and demarcate the exact location for your Project 3 Building (Site 1, 2 or 3) and compose your Planning Strategy in the format of minimum 4 x A3 size. Use diagrams / drawings/ cartographic mapping / photo-collage to illustrate your design strategies. Other than that, to support these drawings, you shall produce a series of schematic building models. Site planning strategies requires systematic consideration of the following contents: 1. Zoning and usage of the building 2. Building and Planning Authority guidelines 3. Natural Physical Features (Landscape / vegetation) 4. Man-Made Features (Infrastructures) 5. Circulation, Transportation, Node 6. Sensory, Sense of Place. 7. Human and Cultural 8. Environment and Climate 9. Building Typology 10. Proposed Programmes (Activities & Building Usage) SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS *To follow Teaching Plan dates and details: URBAN STRATEGY (TASK 2A) Week 6 - Literature review (2 to 3 nos of journals, articles or books) discussions Week 7 - Development of speculative board and model Week 8 - Finalising the speculative board and model SITE STRATEGY (TASK 2B) Week 9 - Tutorial Week 10 - Tutorial & overall P2 presentation Prepared by Aainaa Suhardi
