Program encourages strong member participation and group discussion on critical worldwide issues, be they social, economic or political― impacting a region of the world or the entire globe. The topics to be discussed will be selected by course members from a list of topics presented and reviewed at the first meeting. The class is based on securing volunteers who will choose one of the class selected topics to research and present with questions stimulating discussion.

We will spend at least one session discussing each of the five overseas locations where the instructor served in the U.S. foreign service―Germany, Botswana, Korea, Australia and Afghanistan―and at least one session on the life of a foreign service officer at the State Department in Washington. These sessions include how they are alike or different from the U.S., their importance to the U.S. and their role in their region and in the world. There is no expectation of previous knowledge or background except for an interest in foreign countries and how the U.S. interacts with those countries through its embassies and consulates overseas. This hybrid-format class takes place on-site in the classroom, joined simultaneously by virtual participants in an online section of the same class.
