PRESIDENT’S Update Well we’re back to class for semester two already. Where has the time gone? All in all it’s been a tumultuous year so far, with a number of changes for better or for worse (mostly for better I hope). We’ve all survived the exam period and hopefully everyone passed with flying colours - or at least scraped through without too much stress. Time to focus in on the second half of the year and getting back down to business. Now I realise this Probe is coming out a little later than would be expected for edition 2, but Paul assures me everything is under control and we’ll still get 4 editions out. Because I’m sure you were all stressing terribly that it might not happen. This semester the third years are shaping up for their first case presentations. So if you see some students freaking out in the computer room or laboratory, vigorously polishing their mounted models until they reach a beautiful shine, or taking and retaking photos in the clinic until they’re perfect, please speak to them in low calm tones as they’re liable to explode at any moment. The library as I’m sure you’re all aware is still under development - and so far as I’ve heard is still on schedule. I’m not quite sure how that works given the schedule is for the end of September
4
and peering inside it still looks pretty empty, but I’m going to be optimistic and think that maybe we’ll have somewhere to study come the end of year exams. Maybe. I’m sure you’re all aware of the changes to the laboratory this semester. No longer will any work be sent to outside laboratories, and everything will be completed in house. This has put immeasurable stress on the guys and gals in the lab, and it’s quite possible that turnaround times for jobs will start to increase. Please don’t get s***ty at the lab staff if this starts to happen. It’s not their fault this has been decided and morale is pretty low already in there. On the bright side however Ken has come back to OHCWA to help us out in the pros lab on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you have any queries about lab work he is now your point of contact. Now to any of you who haven’t heard yet, there’s big news for UDSS and OHCWA for next year. UWA was successful in its bid to host the Australian Dental Students Association (ADSA) convention here in Perth next year! As any of you who have managed to get the time off uni to go travel over east to visit convention this year or in previous ones, it’s always an incredibly drunken time. And also some learning might take place or something, I’m not
PROBE ISSUE 2 2017
sure. We are currently in talks with the head of school trying to organise a way that the academic programme can be tied in with the first week of teaching for second semester, so all OHCWA students are able to attend! If we get a full cohort of 200 odd students from OHCWA alone, that will likely make it one of, if not the biggest convention held to date. So yay! Go us! That pretty much covers everything I need to say, so until the next edition, try not to stress too much. Chris Bartlett UDSS President

The pinnacle – the Gala Ball was a wonderful way to welcome the newly elected ADSA committee and celebrate the achievements of its outgoing members, as well as to say a final farewell to the new friends we’d met along the way. Taken together, to network with our prospective colleagues from all corners of Australia was an invaluable opportunity and I’m sure that all who attended will cherish the fond memories of their time Sydney. Backed by intense scrutiny The difference is in the details. For over 45 years, A-dec has been equipping and supporting government institutions and dental schools throughout the world with reliable dental solutions. When you consider the rigorous selection process—involving educators, administrators, dentists, accountants, procurement officers, property engineers, and volumes of third-party data— that’s a lot of muster to pass. Still, A-dec is the Top Choice more than 75% of the time. • More schools and government institutions worldwide use A-dec than any other manufacturer. • The vast majority of future dentists are learning on A-dec equipment. Visit a-dec.com/thedifference or call 1.800.225.010 to find out how every detail behind an A-dec solution makes for a lasting investment.

HBF RUN FOR A REASON
Perth’s HBF Run for A Reason brought out the best in this year’s dentistry team alongside 50,000 other runners. Up nice and early on a crisp morning over 20 members of RUNDMD were ready to go at the start line in the City with an awesome atmosphere to warm up. The courses included running along the Swan, Crown towers, the new Perth Stadium to the finish line at Gloucester Park with the weather putting on an absolute show. With groups in all three of the 4,12 and 21km routes we are extremely proud of everyone who ran and contributed to raising over $1000 for the charity beyondblue, who work towards the betterment of mental health of individuals all across Australia. RUNDMD is looking forward to the next running event and hoping to smash the HBF run with even more participants next year! Jay Vaddagiri Sports Representative 12
