Backed by intense scrutiny The difference is in the details. For over 45 years, A-dec has been equipping and supporting government institutions and dental schools throughout the world with reliable dental solutions. When you consider the rigorous selection process—involving educators, administrators, dentists, accountants, procurement officers, property engineers, and volumes of third-party data— that’s a lot of muster to pass. Still, A-dec is the Top Choice more than 75% of the time. • More schools and government institutions worldwide use A-dec than any other manufacturer. • The vast majority of future dentists are learning on A-dec equipment. Visit a-dec.com/thedifference or call 1.800.225.010 to find out how every detail behind an A-dec solution makes for a lasting investment.

PROBE ISSUE 4 2017

President’s sign-off Welcome to the final issue of Probe for 2017. It’s hard to believe the year has come and gone already. I hope you’re all excited for the Dental Dinner, which should be happening just about when this issue is being released. And for those of you who aren’t coming, you’re missing out on what’s looking to be a fantastic night, thanks to the hard work of Claudia and Keenan. I’d like to start off by thanking this year’s UDSS committee for the fantastic job they’ve done this year. They’ve been a great bunch of people to work with and have made my job a lot easier because of it. I’d also like to say a big thank you to the people who stepped up for next year’s committee. We’ve managed to fill all the positions and it’s looking like a great bunch of people to help the UDSS go from strength to strength in 2018. Special mention needs to go to Probe’s own editor Paul Chung who is jumping in at the helm next year - we couldn’t ask for a better candidate in my opinion. Good luck Paul! I’d also like to single out my vice-president Parnian for a special thank you. She’s been the best VP I could have asked for and has gone above and beyond her role in helping out myself and many of the other members of the committee. She’s also done an exemplary job of bringing in sponsorship for the UDSS, which is by far the most important role

on committee, as without it we are not able to put on any of the events from Sports Days to the Dental Dinner. We’ve had a busy year and achieved a lot, and while I won’t bore you by going through everything in detail, some of the more important changes include: helping to oversee the redevelopment of the library, gaining extra live copies of Titanium on computers in the lab, gaining the services of a technician to assist us in the lab, winning the rights to host the 2018 ADSA convention, starting to reestablish closer ties with the ADAWA (as we had back in the days of the BDSc), and gaining additional storage space for laboratory work on the 2nd floor (it should be installed by the time we get back). As you can see UDSS never stops fighting to improve the lives of the students of OHCWA and I hope I have left things in a better place than when I took over. I hope you all now have a well-deserved break. To the graduating final years, congratulations and the best of luck as you head out into the world and forge your path as new dentists. To everyone else I will see you back at the school in just a few short weeks. Chris Bartlett UDSS President

IADR DIVISIONAL MEETING 2017 The International Association of Dental Research held the Australian and New Zealand Divisional Meeting for 2017 in Adelaide, Australia. From the 25th September until 27th September, a cohort of 12 students from the DMD and DCD programs were flown over to represent the UWA Dental School and to exhibit some of the research that has been undertaken by students at OHCWA. Students were selected to attend based on their presentations made at the annual UWA Research Day. Some students were asked to display a poster while others made a 10 minute presentation to an audience in the general session that best corresponded with the genre of their research. Three students, Dr Abdullhamed Husain, Luke Newman and myself, were also entered into the Colgate Poster competition where in front of a panel of judges we summarized our research onto an A0-sized poster and into a 5-minute oral presentation, for a chance to enter into the International Colgate Poster competition. The general presentation sessions showcased work from students, post-graduate students and professors alike. Aside from presentations of very novel and advanced research, there were many opportunities to socialize and network with other dental students from across Australia, and not to mention some of the most prolific and cited researchers in the southern hemisphere. A welcome reception as well as a gala dinner at the Adelaide Oval, were highlights of the social calendar. We were also fortunate to be given a lecture from Professor Andrew RuggGunn of the University of Newcastle in the UK, who was the Colgate Eminent Speaker, aswell as lectures from other esteemed international academics. I found the conference experience to be very positive and stimulating, with a deeply supportive atmosphere, and it was clear that the orgainzation aims to foster progression in the profession with sound scientific underpinning. It was encouraging to have members of the audience follow along with and be interested enough to ask questions about the projects, and give advice for the future direction of the research presented. Special thanks must go to Professor Farah, who is the immediate Past President of the association and without whom we would not have attended the event, and to Professor Linda Slack-Smith, the serving President.

Uni Games! When I was about to start dentistry, I thought I’d only have time for clinic and the library. Although it did really feel like that for all of third year, there was one week in the year where I didn’t have to worry about either of these things. I did something unheard of… I used the study break for a break FROM study rather than a break TO study. Joined by second year student, Sarah Bestall, I jetted off to the Gold Coast to compete in the annual Australian University

Games competitions. I was competing in Women’s beach volleyball and Sarah was competing in Women’s hockey. Spending all day for 5 days in a row on Surfer’s Paradise beach, hitting the town at night time and experiencing the Gold Coast life… yep life was really tough for me!! Although, I did not manage to win a medal, Sarah’s team came home with a gold medal and that’s good enough for me! One downside is my horrid tan line, that just about all of

Perth has heard me whinge about, as I really wanted to get rid of it before the Dental Dinner but looks like I will be rocking the beach volleyball look on the night. If you’re coming to this great event, feel free to mock me as much as you like. Parnian Zareie Vice-President

SPORTS REPORT November brought the final two recreational events at OHCWA with our in-house UDSS Table Tennis and Pool Tournaments. With a competitor pool of 16 for the Table Tennis Tournament there was stiff competition for the cup. The final stages brought a pair of classic inter-year match ups, with DMD2’s Michael Lai coming out on top. We’re hoping Mike will be back next year to protect his title and post back to back victories! The pool tournament fared to be much less predictable. With a few early knockouts of strong favourites, an unexpected dark horse, Zach Richards (also of DMD2 fame) claimed the trophy off a great run in the knockout stages. He’s pictured here at a different venue again gravitating towards his new favourite hobby outside of watching badminton and supporting the Hawthorn Hawks. Good on ya Zach!
