President’s Address
Welcome Welcome to the first Probe issue of 2016! This year is a very important year for the University of Western Australia’s dental school, as we have seen the official graduation of the final year of Bachelor of Dental Science (BDSc) students in March, and our first year of Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) students will complete their final year this year. On top of this, 2016 also marks the 70th anniversary of the University of Western Australia’s dental programme, from its humble beginnings of 9 graduating dentists in 1951. Today, we have 57 first year dental students that have just joined us for an exciting and challenging start to their careers, and I would like to welcome them to the school.
Koelmeyer and Anjuli Kaney have made a particular effort to aid the first years in settling in, as well as organising information evenings for students to inform them about the different dental specialities that are available for post-graduate studies. We are also working closely with the Head of School, Professor Camile Farah, to communicate the student’s educational requests and requirements, and assisting the school with the transition to UWA’s new assessment policy.
With the move from the school from paper to digital clinical records, and the addition of digital dentistry such as digital impressions and radiographs, there has been a lot of re- learning of the basics for students. Whilst this can at times be frustrating, our students The University Dental Students’ Society should be proud that they have (UDSS) is taking a particular interest in demonstrated such flexibility and ease of being involved in education issues this year. learning this year. What happens when you put 280 dental students and their friends into one room after 6 weeks of blood, sweat and tears (…and lots of spit)? You get a lot of priming and a lot of bonding. And boy, did everyone deliver nicely at Prime and Bond! It was great to see everyone there, having a good ol’ time and relieving some of the stresses that had accumulated since the start of semester. We had a great mix of people from all the years….well we can only expect so much from our beloved 4th years r ight? ;;) Nonetheless it was lovely to see everyone having a good time and grooving to the beats thanks to music from the beloved DJVR, with some interruptions of less than mediocre singing from yours truly (sorry about that….the microphone was a bad idea in hindsight).
Looking forward to seeing you all at GV Blacks, where there will be more class, more cocktails and less singing (screaming?) from me – I’ll try but I can’t make any promises about the latter.
Ching Wen Tan UDSS JUNIOR SOCIAL REPRESENTATIVE For the brief moment that I was there, I remembered how awesome it was to see all the familiar faces Bond, I was lost for words. What even happened at outside the bubble (or hell hole) we live in that is the event? Seemed like I was there only for a jiffy, OCHWA. and in a blink of an eye I woke up in 3am in bed, confused as ever. Apologies to all for my I hope the event has served its purpose – welcome disappearance, but I know for a fact ya’ll had a sick you first years! Dentistry ain’t all about the books, time anyways! scanning documents and waiting for tutors. ;;) All you need to do is gather yourselves, throw in some drinks, some tunes, and relax! You’ll sail through the degree, or maybe, just first year?
When asked to write an article for the Prime and
Nonetheless, I expect to see everyone at GV Black, and as Parni mentioned – more class and cocktails. The Claremont was a nice venue to kick off the year, but wait and see what we have lined up for you guys next J
The Australian Society of Implant Dentistry (ASID) was established in 1969 and internationally is one of only eight component societies that head-up the world’s largest implant group – the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) with its 25,000 members spread across the globe. The ASID runs educational programs for all dental practitioners in the field of implant dentistry, from new graduates through to experienced clinicians. New graduates have found that the ASID Levels I, II and III Courses have helped to de-mystify implantology, to educate in the basic scientific aspects required for this field, and to provide opportunities for clinical mentoring when required. Safety for the patient is a high priority with this education. More than 1500 young dentists have completed the ASID Accreditation Courses, which are advertised regularly in the ADA News Bulletin. We welcome you to join us as new graduates, in our 2016 series. Colleagues are also encouraged to gather specific records in preparation for the definitive treatment of their patients, with safe, predictable and successful outcomes as a goal. Assistance and advice with cases can be just a phone call or email away, and uncritical help obtained. We also support our more experienced members with advanced courses in our Beyond Programme where we invite experts from throughout the world to present the latest research and techniques in implantology. In today’s world, knowledge about the scope and feasibility of implant dentistry is no longer just an option - it is essential. Patients expect it and even demand it. The ASID stands ready to assist you as a new graduate to become confident in prescribing implant treatment when appropriate. The Society will assist you in your learning curve as you begin to undertake implant treatment yourself. Our Beyond Programme of more advanced tuition will assist you as you grow in confidence and ability in the field. The Society looks forward to meeting you. You do not have to be a member of the ASID in order to register for the Accreditation Courses, though you are welcome to join at any time and enjoy the benefits.
Sports Day The first sports day of the school year was a great success! It began with an action packed session of tennis and was it ever surprising to see how many great tennis players we have in dentistry especially in the first year cohort. Some of you guys would fit right in at the next Australian Open! After an hour of tennis filled with aces, s mashes and behind the back v olleys, the pack moved to an oval on campus and played a friendly but hard fought match of soccer. Some of us really had our stamina tested trying to compete, but boy was it ever a blast! After the sports we all sat down in the shade to chow down on some snacks and rehydrate. It was a great opportunity to talk to people from other years, s omething that does not always happen during the busy semester. There were a lot of laughs and plenty of fun to be had and hopefully the next event will be just as special. Thanks s o much to everyone who came out for some athletics, especially the first years, and we hope to see you all at our next event! UDSS Sports
