THE PRESIDENT’S UPDATE Welcome to the second edition of Probe for 2018! It’s been a whirlwind semester that has gone by so quickly, where does the time go - apart from study study study, right? I’m going to keep this brief because our great committee members for the year have filled this issue with an excellent recap of what has been happening on the DMD front, ranging from our educational initiatives to our social activities that keep the DMD calendar very busy indeed. By now our first year DMD students and final Med Sci students are a semester closer to spending all their time on site at OHCWA. It has definitely been quiet without the presence of a whole cohort, but we do look forward to seeing you all on site in the near future and I hope the week of shadowing DMD4 has been an eye-opening experience. Given the new structure of having multiple streams feeding into the DMD programme, I just want to stress that any feedback should be given wherever possible, either through the completion of course/unit evaluation surveys or by directly notifying UDSS. The talk of the town is ADSA Convention, which is kicking off in a matter of days. Our ADSA rep Emma along with our Alumni rep Natasha have been heavily involved in ensuring that we are up for a blockbuster week and proving that the West can do convention as good as anywhere! We are all looking forward to the action-packed schedule that has been organised, and look forward to welcoming all our fellow peers that will be visiting for the week. Finally, by now everyone has just about finished exams. For those that get a break please do enjoy it, and to the final years although there is no break due to the intensive block, the home stretch is in sight! The UDSS calendar is no less full during the second semester so please keep an eye out for plenty of more events and activities that will be up and coming over the course of the next few months! All the best Paul Chung UDSS President

Clinical TIps Seminar
Clinical Tips Seminar for DMD 3 & 4 held at the Sutherland Lecture Theatre, Oral Health Centre of Western Australia on the 12th of April 2018. Standing on the far right hand side are Dr Waldock (left), Dr Park (Middle) and Dr Ong (right).
The Clinical Tips Seminars were a new initiative this year brought to the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) students by the UDSS Education Representatives. These Seminars were presented by thee knowledgeable and charismatic recent graduate dentists from our own University, Dr Park, Dr Ong and Dr Waldock in order to assist DMD students transition into the increasing clinical responsibilities that are bestowed upon us as we progress into subsequent years of the course. In addition, these seminars provided an opportunity to network with our graduate dentists and colleagues. Refreshments and beverages were provided at the courtesy of the UDSS. The Seminar came in two instalments, the first for DMD 2 on the 31st of January and the second for DMD 3 & 4 on the 12th of April 2018. The Seminars were held over two events to cater for the differing needs of the target year groups and held as early as possible in the year to maximize benefit for the subsequent Clinics. DMD 1 currently do not have a patient case load but are involved as observers with DMD 4 students during their immersion blocks in both semesters of this year and we look forward to seeing them more next year as they join us in full time capacity on site at OHCWA. Both Seminars were well received with high attendance rates and positive feedback. We would like to thank Professor Farah, our guest speakers, the UDSS and our fellow peers for their support in these Seminars. Kind Regards, Your Education Representatives, Ruth Um and Daniel Girgis

HBF Run For a Reason In late May the UDSS team braved the wind and rain to participate in the HBF Run for a Reason. We had a great turn out, with 22 students split across all distances and speeds. Whilst some enjoyed the casual 4km walk, beginning after the rain have finished, others challenged themselves in the early morning pour down with the half marathon. Despite the cold, and lack of training by many, we all crossed the finish line with a smile on our faces- ready for a guiltfree feed and a week of soreness on the OHCWA stairwell. UDSS PUB Crawl On the 24th of April, UDSS hosted a Commonwealth Games-themed pubcrawl as its second social event of the year. Everyone in attendance very much embraced the spirit of sport, donning their best jerseys, knee-high socks and sporty pink tracksuits. The night commenced at the UWA Tavern, with a party bus then taking us around to various bars throughout Subiaco, Claremont and Leederville. It was a great way to celebrate making it halfway through semester, and to spend time with our fellow dental students in a social setting after a busy few months. Thank you to everyone who has helped out with and attended the Semester 1 social events! Be sure to look out for the upcoming first event of Semester 2: G.V. Black!
