A MESSAGE FROM YOUR 2021 MEDIA REPS JOANNA & RACHAEL Greetings! Although 2021 was off to a slightly bumpy start with a short lockdown, we hope that things will remain normal for the remainder of the year and we can enjoy a year full of fun-filled activities! While we cannot leave COVID-19 behind us just yet, UDSS was still fortunate to have carried out the events for the first quarter of 2021 such as Prime and Bond, Journal Club and sports events, which we will be covering in this issue.
Both of us are excited to bring to you the latest news on the UDSS Facebook and Instagram accounts while capturing the amazing events that will take place throughout the year on the Probe! Reminisce on the past events and look forward to the upcoming events on our social media platforms!

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE WELCOME BACK TO UNI Welcome all students, staff, sponsors and community to the first issue of Probe for 2021! I’d like to thank Chelsea and the rest of the 2020 UDSS committee for navigating us through the turbulent 2020. Fingers crossed this year will be a lot smoother. UDSS kicked off 2021 with our first social event – Prime & Bond, held at the Captain Stirling Hotel last month. Priya and Shi Han did a fantastic job organising it, and it was a great opportunity for our new students to meet everyone, and for some less new students to let loose for a night. On a more studious note, Youssef and Laura organised the first Journal Club of the year, and we were lucky to hear from the fan favourite, Dr Amanda Phoon Nguyen. Journal club is a great

chance for specialists to have a bit more of a free reign with their topics, and in a much more casual setting, so I’d encourage everyone to come down and check it out. Last month we were also introduced to the ADSA volunteering program – Healthy Mouths Brighter Smiles. Thanks to Xin Jie Tan + Co for taking the time to introduce us to this important cause! We are already 7 weeks into the semester, which is going very quickly, but it is promising to see how well everyone has settled into their routines. I’d like to remind all students that you can always reach out to your wonderful year reps: Lisa and Richard (DMD4), Ebony and Scott (DMD3), Thomas and Rujuta (DMD2), and Carly and Sean (DMD1), if you are ever in need of guidance or just someone to talk to. With such a competent and passionate team, I’m sure we’re bound for a fantastic year!

“The event was an awesome way to meet new friends, especially DMD 2,3,4 students in a casual and fun social setting.” - Peter Nguyen, DMD 1
Prime and Bond is UDSS’s annual bonding event to kick off a new year of dental school and celebrate the dreaded return to student life. It was a great chance for the various year groups to mingle and catch up with each other while also welcoming the medical science and DMD1 students to the dental school. This year the fun was held at Captain Stirling Hotel and with over 100 people in attendance, we rang in the new year in style!! There were amazing tunes courtesy of DJ Rog, snazzy photography from Neosh, plenty of delicious finger food and most importantly, free flowing drinks all night long. We hope everyone had a fantastic night and cannot wait to see you all at the next event!!

EDUCATION REPORT By Education Reps: Laura and Youssef
Journal club The first Journal Club for 2021 was held on the 10th of February. We had the honour to host oral medicine legend Dr Amanda Phoon Nguyen who came to speak about Post-Traumatic Neuropathic Pain (PTNP). Dr Nyugen spoke about the symptomatology, epidemiology, pathophysiology and management of PTNP. I think we were all surprised at the high rate at which PTNP is misdiagnosed and how many dentists can exacerbate this condition by conducting repeated unnecessary dental treatments! As future dentist we certainly need to be aware that we do not fall into this trap. It was a very informative but captivating talk. We would definitely recommend checking out Dr Nyugen’s website and social media at A Spoonful of Medicine.
Intro to DMD1 The intro to DMD 1 and 2 event was held on 18th February. The DMD 3 and 4 students presented on the various fields of dentistry, and provided their insights and secret tips on how to survive dentistry school. These included orthodontics, periodontics, public health, endodontics, restorative, prosthodontics, general medicine, oral medicine and paediatrics. We were also fortunate to have Dr. Amanda Phoon and Dr. David Hallett from the Australian Dental Association WA. The DMD 1 and 2’s were definitely giddy with excitement to practice their hands-on skills!

NETBALL We're the bitewing battalionUDSS’s very first social sport netball team. I’m Priya the team captain. Our team consists of DMD1s all the way to DMD3s (Gia, Peter, Abbas, Shi Han, Steven, Maggie, Amy, Ethan, Anh, Edmund, Sarah and Anooshree).
SOCCER The first soccer match was played in heavy rain. Despite the weather conditions and losing the game, the team still had a great time.
VOLLEYBALL It’s been a great deal of fun so far. At the moment we don’t train together yet, but we do intend to atleast for a little bit every week in the near future.
