AUTUMN EDITION | ISSUE NO. 1
THE PRESIDENT'S GREETING Welcome back to school and a fantastic year of Probe ahead for 2019! We have another amazing committee of 27 members, who have volunteered their time working behind the scenes, to ensure that students are well represented and that the UDSS calendar is filled with a wide assortment of events not to be missed. A huge thank you to the 2018 Committee for helping everyone smoothly transition into their new roles; after our first quarterly UDSS Committee Meeting, I can say that we have made an excellent start to 2019. As the final two cohorts of the first DMD programme progress into their senior years, we welcome the first DMD v2.0 cohort to OHCWA in their second year. With exposure to patient clinics from the getgo, this year promises to be an exciting and intensive prologue to clinical practice and the dental profession. Although the DMD1 cohort have yet to grace our shores at OHCWA, we have two Graduate Year Representatives, Ethan Lloyd and Yaz Mishani, and one Medical Sciences Year Representative, Youssef Francis, to ensure that both |4|
sub-cohorts are well represented within the UDSS and feel like part of the greater DMD Community. As one of the objectives in creating these new roles, the year reps have also taken on the responsibility of fostering collegiality between the two sub-cohorts, with a meet-andgreet hosted earlier in the year. Academic enrichment through education initiatives remains one of the primary focuses of UDSS, and joint efforts between our Education and Research Representatives have continued to deliver refreshing and engaging content for those who want to go the extra mile. This year, Adam Kadri, Simran Bhalla and Emma Turner are committed to delivering another fantastic series of Clinical Tips seminars, Journal Club evenings and other educational events so stay tuned. As often emphasised to us by even the most studious of academics, students need to relax once in a while and our Junior Social Representatives, Alice Gregory and Sarah McPherson, and Sports Representatives, Eunice Lee and Shan Li, will be hosting a series of events throughout the year to help maintain that rigorous study-work-clinic-family-fun/ social-exercise-sleep balance we all strive for. Our fresher’s event
‘Prime & Bond’ happened on the 02 March this year to accommodate the new MedSci students and it was great to see you all of you there. The Senior Social Representatives are also already hard at work making this year’s Dental Dinner one to remember. Finally, a big thank you to our sponsors, who continue to support the UDSS’s ongoing endeavours in maintaining the academic, physical and mental wellbeing of dental students; to the 2019 Media Representatives for ensuring that we have a great year of Probe magazine to look forward to; and to my Executive team for sharing the workload in co-ordinating the UDSS. Despite the chaos of it all, don’t forget that your mind and body are your most valuable dental assets, so remember to look after yourselves. As always, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any comments or queries and I wish everyone a fantastic 2019! Ruohan Zhang UDSS President

AUTUMN EDITION | ISSUE NO. 1
Journal Club is back and running for its third year in 2019! Journal Club is an interactive seminar that involves the discussion of a pre-read journal article between students and academics, followed by its application into the clinical setting. Organised by UDSS’s very own research representative, Emma Turner with the help of our two education represenatives, Adam Kadri and Simran Preet Bhalla, Journal Club aims to better our clinical practice by exploring the most up-to-date evidence based research. Our very first Journal Club of the year: “Spacing Out!” will be held on Wednesday the 10th of April at 5pm at the Dent Common Room. Paediatric registrars, Dr Cho and Dr Manchandra, will be presenting a masterclass on develomental spacing and how to manage it. Food will be provided. See you there! The second Journal Club will be held on the 24th of May from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. The topic is Oral Medicine, so stay tuned for more updates! PRIME AND BOND
On the 2nd March, the UDSS hosted their first social event of the year, Prime and Bond. The event has a long history and is held at the beginning of the year to prime the new first year dental students into the Dental School, and help bond them together with first year and upper year students. DMD1’s received free tickets to encourage their attendance, which lead to a great turnout from their cohort. This year the event was held at the Captain Stirling Hotel in Nedlands. The event was a huge success with over 150 students and guests attending, evenly spread throughout the four years. It was a memorable night spent together, outside of OHCWA for a change, filled with tasty food and great music.
We had such a fun experience hosting Prime and Bond this year and cannot wait for the events to follow. The next UDSS event will ‘PDL: Pinot, Drafts and Lunch’ Swan Valley tour at the end of April. Stay tuned! Sarah McPherson and Alice Gregory 2019 Junior Social Reps

Backed by intense scrutiny The difference is in the details. For over 45 years, A-dec has been equipping and supporting government institutions and dental schools throughout the world with reliable dental solutions. When you consider the rigorous selection process—involving educators, administrators, dentists, accountants, procurement officers, property engineers, and volumes of third-party data— that’s a lot of muster to pass. Still, A-dec is the Top Choice more than 75% of the time. • More schools and government institutions worldwide use A-dec than any other manufacturer. • The vast majority of future dentists are learning on A-dec equipment. We raised over $420 for KDT and we couldn’t be more proud and thankful! MEET THE NEW STAFF In the past 6 months, the UWA dental school has welcomed three new academics! Find out more about them below!
BRYAR KOYI Senior Clinical Lecturer in Periodontics Background and Universities of Graduation: I am from London and relocated to Perth at the end of 2018. I attained my bachelor degree in Molecular Genetics at King’s College London. When I was in secondary school, my dream was to work on the the Human Genome Project but during my last year of the bachelor’s degree I realised that working in a laboratory was not for me. I decided to study dentistry as a postgraduate and I think that was the best decision I have ever made! I was accepted at Barts & The London Dental School (Queen Mary’s University of London) and I qualified as a dentist in 2010. I worked in private practice for a number of years before deciding that periodontology is where my passion lies. I went back to my dental school and spent 3 years specialising in Periodontics. I passed my exit exams and was enrolled as a Specialist Periodontist by the GDC (The British version of the Dental Board) in 2016. Prior to my relocation to Perth, I was working as a Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow in Periodontics at the Eastman Dental Institute (Universtiy College London), teaching postgraduate students and running CPD courses for dentists. I was also working as a Periodontist and Implant surgeon in private practice. Most Memorable Dental School Experience: I was lucky enough to be awarded The Erasmus Award in my 4th year (I was on a 5 year programme) and I got to spend 6 months as an exchange student at the renowned Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. This was a real eye opener as I got to practise dentistry in a different (and very cold) country and had the opportunity to learn dentistry from a completely different prospective. It was hard work as I was on clinics most days from 730 to 530 pm, however as an exchange student you also get to party hard! I was also the Social Secretary for a year and organised some very good staff/students events and set up the Dental Football Tournament (which is still running annually up to now). What do I do to unwind: I go (or try to go) to the gym a few times a week and love watching football (soccer). The time difference has made it difficult to watch my beloved football club (and the best team in England) Arsenal F.C. but I follow them very closely. What is your advice for dental students: If you want a successful career in dentistry, you need to primarily master the following three things (among many others): 1. Learn your dental sciences inside out. Try to simplify the complex concepts. 2. Develop good communication skills. Try to go on communication skills courses for dentists/doctors/ businessmen etc. This will take time and you need plenty of practice, so be patient! 3. Develop good manual dexterity and don’t worry about speed at this stage. Learn to do procedures well and speed will come with time. | 24 |
AUTUMN EDITION | ISSUE NO. 1
Leticia Algarves Miranda Associate Professor in Periodontics and Oral Implantology Background and Universities of Graduation: My undergraduate dental degree was obtained from Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil in 1995. While practicing in a private setting, I undertook a specialty course in Periodontology (1998) and Masters in Dental Clinics with focus on Periodontology at the same University (1999). Subsequently, I completed a PhD in Periodontology at Rio de Janeiro State University (2003), Brazil and a PhD in Medicine at Karolinska Institutet (2007), Sweden. I have over 15 years experience in practicing clinical periodontology as a private specialist. I have experience in teaching different courses for undergrad students (Perio, Histology, Immunology and Embryology) and in teaching postgraduates in Perio/Implantology. And finally, I also have experience in clinical and basic research in this very field. Most Memorable Dental School Experience: I have many memorable experiences from my undergrad, it was an intense and exciting time. Being the first time face to face with a patient was one of the most thrilling moments! What do I do to unwind: I love being with my boys, I love going to Perth’s beaches and parks with them.
MARYAM JESSRI DISCIPLINE LEAD IN ORAL MEDICINE Background and Universities of Graduation: Shahid Beheshti university of Medical Sciences, University of Queensland, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Institute Most Memorable Dental School Experience: While working on my DDS thesis, I was bit by a lab rat and got three stitches on my left thumb. What do I do to unwind: Baking, Running, and Reading | 25 |
