an update from the president Congratulations everyone, for making it through the first half of 2019! Half the battle is won, and it won’t be long now until our DMD1s join us on-site at OHCWA and our DMD4s earn their freedom. I hope that those who had or are having holidays feel refreshed for an exciting 5 months ahead. On the UDSS Social front, I have heard whispers that the sports reps have some amazing events planned (including Sports Day) and our black-tie event of the year, GV Black, on the 20th of July looks to be another fantastic night of music and mingling. Do try your hardest to come along and wind down to palliate the symptoms of concurrent DMD-induced hyper-stressism and hypo-funism with communication. As the DMD programme restructuring enters its second year, there have undoubtedly been challenges and frustrations for those affected. Thank you for all your feedback, which is being continuously passed on to shape future decisions. I have received assurance that our accreditation remains secure for the foreseeable future, despite the changes within the medical school. For those in MMS3 who missed out on the DMD1 Men|4|

tor Café (in addition to immersion block), I am in the midst of trying to organise something with ADAWA for you so watch this space. As always, if there are any questions, please don’t hesitate to seek advice from us through Facebook or via email. As DMD3s prepare for their first case presentations this semester, you may witness the appearance of coffee-powered robots making mad dashes between the computer room and laboratory, vigorously polishing models and refining photo presentations until they are textbook-worthy. Handle with care as they may be prone to exploding on contact. Journal club has seen some great turn out this year with our first two speakers providing valuable insight into topics that might otherwise receive little focus in class. The Students in Health and Medical Research Conference 2019 will also be running in August and I encourage everyone to seize such extra-curricular opportunities, which will help to make you a more informed and competent practitioner in the long run. Finally, although most of us have not made it to the ADSA Convention in Adelaide this year, I hope that those who have

gone enjoy your time there and build some lasting connections. See you all around and have a great semester ahead. Ruohan Zhang UDSS President

Backed by intense scrutiny The difference is in the details. For over 45 years, A-dec has been equipping and supporting government institutions and dental schools throughout the world with reliable dental solutions. When you consider the rigorous selection process—involving educators, administrators, dentists, accountants, procurement officers, property engineers, and volumes of third-party data— that’s a lot of muster to pass. Still, A-dec is the Top Choice more than 75% of the time. • More schools and government institutions worldwide use A-dec than any other manufacturer. • The vast majority of future dentists are learning on A-dec equipment. Visit a-dec.com/thedifference or call 1.800.225.010 to find out how every detail behind an A-dec solution makes for a lasting investment.

A chat about CHAT Marcus and Lyndon from DMD4 spent an unforgettable 10 days in Vietnam volunteering for the Children’s Health Aid Team (CHAT). CHAT is a not-for-profit, charitable organisation that provides dental services to the underprivileged and disadvantaged children at orphanages, institutions and schools in Vietnam. Four trips are organised each year, with volunteers joining from all over Australia, including our very own dental students. We had a chat with Marcus and here’s what he had to say about the trip: In May, I was fortunate enough to be part of the Children’s Health Aid Team outreach program in rural Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. Each day, we visited a different religious temple (some so remote even Google maps can’t find them!) and worked with the children that lived in the community, from 4 up to 18 years old. The treatment we provided focused on restorative dentistry and exodontia, and most importantly every child received a detailed OHI session and a toothbrushing kit. Each day was as rewarding as it was challenging - full of ‘dental charades’ as we tried to overcome the language barrier and trying to do the most we can for each patient. Most have never been to a dentist – but they were very excited when we arrived and all incredibly brave. | 10 |

My most memorable patient was a teenage girl who had a large cavity in her central incisor – when we restored it she was so happy she was smiling to everyone she saw. It’s these small moments that you feel you’ve really made a difference. You also meet amazing people. I was blessed to have an incredible group of medical professionals and local volunteering staff, and the many hours on the bus together saw many stories shared and bonds forged that will no doubt continue after the trip is over. Particularly as a student, the advice I received from experienced dentists was invaluable. Without a doubt, CHAT Vietnam has been a highlight of my time as a dental student. DMD1 CAREER CAFÉ

WINTER EDITION | ISSUE NO. 2

É On the evening of Wednesday the 19th of June, the DMD1s met, dined and shared a drink (or two) with 16 graduate dentists at the annual DMD1 Career Café. Students were given the opportunity to ask about the profession as well as their life and personal experiences as a dentist in a friendly, and welcoming atmosphere at Café Anatomy (Harry Perkins). Here’s what our first year reps had to say about the evening: “The DMD career cafe was a valuable networking experience that gave us an opportunity to mingle with passionate and charismatic dental alumni and ask questions about their career and lifestyle. It was especially interesting talking to the senior postgraduates and seeing how much the profession and course has changed in the last couple of decades. I was surprised to learn just how many career avenues there are in dentistry ranging from private specialist care to general practice to epidemiology.” - Yasmine Mishani “I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. It was great to be able to pick the professional brains of the alumni, but also to get to know them on a personal side, especially as we’ll be spending time with many of them over the coming years through their continuing roles at OHCWA. It was a great initiative that should keep going for future years!” - Ethan Lloyd A big thank you to all the alumni guest graduates for giving their time in this way. | 13 |

WINTER EDITION | ISSUE NO. 2

On the 10th of April Paediatric registrars, Dr Cho and Dr Manchandra, presented a masterclass regarding developmental spacing and its management. There was an openforum discussion with a Q&A following their in-depth presentation that discussed different spaces in primary dentition and what to look for, growth and development of the dentition, crowding, factors affecting space loss, and treatment considerations. Food was provided and we had a large turnout from our fellow DMD2 students along with several upper classmates. Nothing better than enjoying a free slice of pizza and learning about dentistry in a relaxed environment with non-examinable content!

Dr Cho and Dr Manchandra presenting their masterclass: “Spacing Out”

We used Nando’s to lure in students for the next journal club in late May, but it was really the captivating presentation of Amanda Phoon Nguyen that kept everyone focused till the very end. The evening consisted of a thorough discussion on the different dental appliances available for the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Indeed, she is an absolute powerhouse, with great depth and breadth of dentistry knowledge! Be sure to come attend the Journal Clubs coming up in semester 2! We have many interesting guest speakers planned!
