President’s Report
G’Day trendsetters! Long time no speak! It’s been a while since Probe 2 and there’s a lot to cover in this edition, so I won’t ramble on for too long! Firstly, a big thank you to Elke and Thiviya for putting together another edition of this fine publication as well as the rest of the UDSS committee for their unending efforts so far in 2012. As I’m writing this I’m sitting on my couch as sick as a dog, watching the terrible weather outside and thinking about how badly I need summer to hurry up and get here. But what does this future hold for us? The 2nd years will sit their Drilling Exams (arguably the worst two weeks of the entire course), the 3rd years will attempt to learn Ringlish, the 4th years will engage their biggest assessments to date and attempt to complete their “clinical experiences”, and the 5th years will enjoy their last few weeks as baby dentists and erupt into the professional world! Plus we’ll all “drink responsibly” and “interact with our professional colleagues” at our annual upcoming Dental Dinner. It is apparent that we all face our educational challenges in the future, but remember to keep in mind that our education is but a mere facet of who we are, someone has passed that exam before you; it is possible! And that exercise makes study easier and more effective, plus you wanna look sexy at the beach so hit the gym! Good luck for the remaining 9 or so weeks of the year, let me know if you need any help and don’t be afraid to speak up if you have problems! Stay smiley! Luke Rodman

Guild Elections In 2011 UDSS President Siamak Saberi was elected into the UWA Guild through the support of his ticket and importantly, we dental students. The power of the dental cohort within guild elections quickly became recognized at main campus, which was displayed at the OHCWA booth by the number of guild candidates present and pressing for your votes. Past, present and future; this is good news for dentistry. The power of our combined vote can influence the result of the election and accordingly guild candidates will be more eager to win our persuasions. This means greater representation at guild level, more support at OHCWA and ultimately a greater student experience. So keep voting and keep pushing for your guild to do more for you! The 2012 elections for the 100th Guild Council saw myself run for the position of guild councillor with STAR. I would like to thank everyone who remained patient
with me during my prolonged campaigning and particularly to everyone who came down to the booth and voted. Everyone should be proud to know that this year a record number of votes were lodged through the OHCWA booth! As far as results are concerned, Cameron Barnes of STAR has been elected to the position of Guild President, as have the STAR office-bearers. I can happily and quite humbly say that I have been elected as an Ordinary Guild Councilor, which means I will be at the Guild next year directly working with Cam and the 2013 UDSS Committee to ensure the best outcome for dental students is achieved. Thanks to everyone for allowing me this opportunity, here’s to a brighter (whiter) future for Dentistry in 2013! - Luke
CONGRATUALTIONS LUKE FOR BEING ELECTED ORDINARY GUILD Councillor 2013!!!!
UDSS Elections The existing UDSS constitution and committee structure is somewhat lacking in its ability to optimise the use of student time and adhere to guild regulations. In the coming weeks I will be working with the UDSS committee on updating the existing UDSS constitution to improve on the status quo, allow for the transition to the postgraduate course and ensure the best outcome for all is achieved. Upon finalization by the Committee, the document will be released and positions on future UDSS committees will be outlined. Concurrently, nominations for positions on the 2013 UDSS committee will open. I encourage anyone and everyone to consider running for a position on UDSS. Through my involvement (so far) I have gained far more skills, experiences, and friendships than otherwise would have been possible and I urge people to remember that the university experience is about far more than just your education! Stay tuned for more details in the future, and if you are already interested or have some questions please come and have a chat to me! - Luke 5
QUIZ NIGHT 2012 To mark the recent Olympics, teams dressed as countries from all over the world came together to battle it out in the UDSS quiz night. A dodgy projector saw things start a little behind schedule but nothing could stop the enthusiasm of the fine competitors who had shown up, many of whom had been selected from a young age and put through special training programs known as “kindergarten”, “primary school”, “high school” and “university” all with simply one goal in mind…. To become UDSS Quiz Night Champions. Team Hawaii were looking strong after round one, however they soon hit troubled water as things were shaping up to be a tight battle. As the rounds went by we saw Mexico struggle due to lack of numbers and the Red Indians discover that alcohol is probably not a drug of the performance enhancing kind (unless you measure success by shooting people with a stolen nerf gun) As the finish line approached one team showed strength not in numbers but diversity as the wildcard combination of Ryan, Angus and Jeff pulled away to claim victory closely followed by the Russians second and Hawaii third. The Mexicans finished up last, but still winners as they claimed the losers hamper of wooden spoons and other red dot bargain bin items. Overall it was a great night of trivia, games and prizes that can hopefully continue as a regular event on the annual UDSS calendar. Ben Zuidersma

UDSS Guest Lecture 2 Our 2nd Guest Lecture for the year was on the topic of Sleep Disorders and Their Relevance in Dentistry and presented by the internationally renowned lecturer Dr Robert Delcanho. A topic not generally covered in the general syllabus of the BDSc, this lecture gave students a great opportunity to expand on their spectrum of knowledge- something I know they will benefit from in the future! A new initiative in 2012, the attendance to the 1st guest lecture was lower than acceptable; but the 2nd installment saw a massive amount of support from all years of the student cohort. I like to think that the educational experience available would have attracted students, but in truth the free drinks and pizza may have had a greater effect on the turnout! None-the-less thank you to everyone who attended, it really meant a lot to me to see this event run so successfully and I hope it is a feature of the calendar that will continue into the future. - Luke

GV Black's Birthday 2012- 50 years of composite resins, 60 years of the Queen's reign and 176 years since the birth of Greene Vardiman Black. Yes, the 3rd of August marked the one day of the year when we remember the man who is known as the daddy of dentistry, king of crowns, the brown stain bandit himself- Greene. Whilst Black's parents and brother had the relatively normal christian (a.k.a. given or first) names of William, May and Thomas, on the 3rd of August 1836 they came up with a shocker. The naming was literally hundreds of years ahead of the Hollywood and now Aussie trend of giving children ridiculous names such as Moonunit, Diva Muffin (Frank Zappa's progeny), Jermajesty (Jermaine Jackson's progeny), Ca$hmoney and L-A (pronounced lehdash-ah) (both non-celebrity favourites in WA). - Ryan Moldrich

NOBOTE POEM By Gossip Boy Our gullets were wet, moist as the sea. Stops were many, there were three. Chicks there were, dressed as mermaids. Contracted there wasn't, HIV/AIDS. Beers in vessels, our thirst was stayed. Dicks on-board, in their spades. Stiff as a plank, our 'maids aren't rank. Some got off lightly, without a spank. Revealing the costumes showed much leg, Wooden exposure was kept to the peg Maggot on rum, up the bum... Ate a slice, got turned down twice.... Some got fucked, and walked the plank early They’ll have a headache tomorrow surely. The last ones still standing at the paramount found the night hard to recount xoxo

Primary School Visit: Highgate Primary Highgate Primary were stoked to have UWA dental students visit for the morning. We all had loads of fun and everything ran very smoothly, apart from Nadia (II), Anna (III) and Luvena (III) getting left behind. Luckily they were safe and were picked up by Uncle Marcus (IV) at the front office. At 134 years old, the Primary School is one of the oldest in Perth, having many illustrious alumni, including the (roughly) 1929 School Dux, Samuel Atlas. it is also one of the largest with over 500 students. The inner city suburb of Highgate (North Perth) has been a hub for settlement of new migrants to Western Australia. With the progressive dismantlement of the White Australia Policy (introduced in 1901), the second half of the 20th century saw waves of immigration, generally corresponding with conflict overseas. From continental Europeans, to Asians and more recently people of the Middle East and Africa. The school has an excellent intensive English programme which caters for the multicultural landscape, students are bussed in daily as far as Joondalup. - Ryan Moldrich
