Approximately a year ago, Emma Turner and Natasha Koelmeyer embarked on the task of planning to host the Australian Dental Students’ Association (ADSA) Convention in Perth from 1 – 7 July 2018. While this seemed like an arduous task at the time, the generosity and altruism of the Western Australian dental community made our jobs much easier than anticipated. In order to provide UWA students with the best possible experience, the academic program was integrated into the academic calendar of the host university. This year’s ADSA Convention was the largest in the history of the event, with 200 UWA dental students, six direct pathway UWA undergraduate students, 80 interstate dental students, nine oral health students and an international delegate from the United Kingdom in attendance. The academic component comprised of five days of lectures covering a range of fields. In most sessions, delegates were treated to concurrent lectures, giving them the opportunity to attend lectures based on their interests and competency. Delegates were offered a full day of clinical-skills workshops on in-chair whitening, composites, suturing and flap design and advanced rubber dam techniques. Additionally, the final year students were given the opportunity to undertake a mock Primaries workshop organised by RACDS. The comprehensive academic programme was complemented by a full spectrum of social events that ranged from the Swan River cruise that opened the week to an inaugural collaborative social event with the Australian Medical Students’ Association Convention and the annual Convention Gala to round off the week. For the first time in the history of the ADSA Convention, we introduced a ‘Networking and Career Development Evening’ with the assistance of DSS WA. Delegates were treated to talks on soft skills and graduate prospects, as well as the chance to engage with both general dentists and specialists. The week concluded with the election of two UWA dental students to the ADSA Committee – Emma as the incoming ADSA President for 2019 and CY Yau as the IT Officer. The Convention Team would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Professor Farah for having worked closely with us to create a very well-received academic program and for his unwavering support over the past year. The delegates commented on the high calibre of the lecturers, suggesting that it had had well surpassed their expectations. Thank you also to Dr David Hallett and Dr Jenny Ball from ADAWA, for having assisted with the Career Development Evening and for always offering their time to help. Additionally, the Team is truly grateful to the UWA Staff that delivered lecturers and those who helped to coordinate workshops for so generously haven given up their time to be involved in the Convention. The strength of the WA dental community and the UWA Dental School’s academic and support staff was truly manifested during this process. It would not have been possible to run an event of this scale without the support of so many. Emma Turner and Natasha Koelmeyer

Journal Club
Greetings. The UDSS Journal Club is an initiative to promote research, critical thinking and evidence-based dentistry. It also provides a great opportunity for the dental students to network with the post graduate registrars, and increase their knowledge and awareness of the dental specialties. It is open to dental students in all years and other students who are also interested. The recent periodontal journal club on the 3rd of September 2018 was presented by Dr Samy Francis on the new periodontal classification system. It was delivered in an illustrative and engaging fashion with a solid discussion around various clinical cases; and the students demonstrated that they were able to astutely apply the new classification. Nando’s with their famous peri-peri zest and drinks were provided as refreshments. Thank you to the UDSS, post graduate registrars and students for their ongoing enthusiasm at these Journal Clubs Kind regards, UDSS Education Representative Daniel Girgis
G. V. BLACK UDSS hosted the GV Black Cocktail Party on Saturday 18th August. GV Black is a cocktail night held annually by the dental students to celebrate GV Black’s birthday (and also an excuse to have a great time). The event was held at Metro Bar and Bistro, which is located across from Perth Convention Centre in the City. This is the same location as last year. The turnout was great with over 100 people in attendance. Everyone attending threw away their clinic coats for the evening to dress to cocktail theme. Cocktail deals were present throughout the night and it was certainly the stress reliever we all needed! The finger food provided by the venue was delicious also. A big thank you to all who attended for making the evening possible, and thank you to Metro Bar and Bistro for their hospitality and EMAS UWA who were our DJ’s for the evening. Can’t wait for next year’s GV Black! UDSS Junior Social Representatives Keely Johnson & Zoe Thorning

DAY
@ UWA dental school
On the 13th of SEP, our ADSA rep Emma Turner and UDSS team organised an afternoon tea event in conjunction with R U Ok day. R U ok day is a mental health day that emphasises on the mental well- being of students. Dentistry is a difficult journey and we could go a long way by asking each other R U ok? A conversation could change a life. The afternoon tea consists of a free coffee card sponsored by the ADSA team, while our generous UWA students contributed with sushies, cookies, fruit platter and a TOOTH shaped cake. Thanks to this event, most of the dental students are able to seize this opportunity to socialise amongst our busy schedule, while enjoying the yummy food. Not to mention the free hot brewed coffee. UDSS Bake Sale On the 7th of Sep, the UDSS team (Natasha Koelmyer) organised a bake sale to raise funds for drought affected farmers. UDSS bake sale is an annual event that supports a great cause whilst allowing students to indulge in delicious baked goods. Every year our generous dental students will bake delicious tea treats for sale to dental, medical and health science students. This year, UDSS managed to raise $620 from the baked sale and the farmers who benefited from this program would like to say a big thank you to our generous dental students.
