Editor’s note Media Representative | Another year over, and what a full one it has been! It’s already time for the final edition of the Probe for Claire Waldock this year. The UDSS has made massive achievements this year, from the discounts secured at various businesses along Hampden Rd for dental students, to the repair of the pool table, to the securing of funding for a complete renovation of the common room—it needs it! Another tremendous achievement has been the creation of the UDSS education committee, a sub-committee for the executive, ed reps and class reps to focus on the academic side of dent school life—which, after all, is why we’re all here! Anyway I wish all happy holidays and will see you all in 2016. Claire Claire Waldock | UDSS Media Representative media@udss.net UDSS c/- OHCWA 17 Monash Ave Nedlands WA 6009

President’s Report UDSS President | Adrian Sciarrone

H

ey everyone! It’s my final article for the probe – crazy how the year has passed so quickly! We’ve just had our annual dental dinner and it was great! Massive thank you to Thiviya and Elke! I’d also like to thank all our sponsors – if it wasn’t for them we couldn’t run this society the way we do! This year is a pretty significant one – it is the end of an era with the graduation of the final class BDSc. We all know it was a great program, they’ve done a great job, and now they can see the light! I’d like to wish them all the best of luck and success in the future. As for the third years, I think we’re all just glad it’s over – though I’ve still got my fingers crossed. It’s been great to see so many changes made to second year – looks like the program is running really well. And also, a shout out to first year – it’s great to have such an awesome bunch and it’s great to see so many of you getting involved in UDSS next year. As for the UDSS, I think we’ve achieved a lot this year! I’d like to thank my whole committee, they’ve been great – but in particular I’d really like to thank Rose and Bec. If it wasn’t for them I don’t think we would have achieved half of what we did this year.

PROBE | ISSUE 4 2015

So, what did we achieve? Well other than UDSS’ usual activities: We created the UDSS Education committee – a committee where all class reps and education reps work together on education related issues, collect and store documentation and act where necessary. They were responsible for getting guidebooks out in the first couple weeks this semester with all assessment dates attached. Also, the UDSS feedback forms are a product of this committee as well. A lot more has been planned and I hope next year we will see these projects getting carried out. We’ve updated the UDSS website We got you discounts at Santis, Baskin Robbin and the Byrnleigh with our UDSS stickers We’ve made everyone aware that they can attend ADA WA’s CPD lectures for free – and how to apply We re-felting the pool table and purchase of

7

new pool ques We re-established the 3rd year tradition of receiving magnetic and professional looking name badges from the Alumni And I guess the biggest achievement would be securing $30,000 and working with the dental school to completely renovate the common room and courtyard areas We’ve done some more as well, but I won’t bore you with all the details! But as you can see the UDSS is here for you. Dental school is hard enough as it is, that’s why we have to be there for each other. It’s been great being your president and I wish Bec all the best of luck next year! Congratulations everyone on another year completed. Enjoy your holidays – we all know you deserve it!

QUIZ NIGHT

I

t’s not everyday you see Mafia, Bikies and Gangsters all in the same room. Not unless it’s at the yearly UDSS quiz night. Set at the ‘Tav’ on main campus, there was a serious Gang war that Friday night. The 1st years brought their A-game as Bikies, dressed in beards, helmets and leather. Lots of leather. The 2nd years stepped straight out of Mexico as tattoo’d-up Cholos (you may have to Google this one)

Gangs of OHCWA 3rd years brought a splash of blue and red to the room as Bloods and Crips (trying our best to do the hand signals while trying not to offend the actual Bloods and Crips). And last, but not least, the final years ramped up the fashion stakes, glamming it up as the Italian Mafia. High on Haribo lollies, chips, chocolate and jugs of alcohol from the bar, the room was pumping with Ghetto RNB music and was buzzing to get started. Bec and I ‘controlled’ the crowd as the presenters for the night (Aviators, OHCWA Security shirts and all), along with our helpful team Lionel Thompson, Rose Kong, Kathryn Fong and Mei Ling Koh. - Continued Page 11

There was a good mix of general questions and ones related to the Dental School and lecturers (we felt a little sorry for the Oral Health Therapists, but they were teamed up with the final years and ended up being the winners with a $100 Byrnleigh pub voucher!). Other prizes included coffee vouchers from Santi’s Cafe, wine, chocolate, and steriliser bags filled with lollies. Highlights of the night were the blind impression taking (we had to do this outside, as supposedly it’s hard to get alginate out of carpet?.. the venue knows from experience..), and a race around the room and up alot of stairs holding a full cup of water. A few were injured along the way with people gagging on very runny alginate and people slipping down the stairs. Congratulations to all the

participants and survivors!! Thank you to Christina De Piazzi (Previous Ed Rep) for providing us with ideas for questions and activities for the night. Thank you to the boys, Keenan Inderjeeth and Reezan Yousuf for promoting the event and creating a cool poster with Adrian as the Godfather. Big thank you to Bec Penco for presenting and coming up with a lot of the interesting and funny questions. It was a hilarious night, with great costumes and a successful Gangland War. It all went by too quickly, and before we knew it, it was midnight. Cannot wait to see what Quiz Night 2016 holds. - Written By Lena Fang Qiu
