president's president's update update Since we are almost at the finish line for 2020, it is important to take a breather and reflect on the semester that has been. Despite the ups and downs of the last few months, we are so lucky to have been able to see patients, attend classes, and host social events; something of which other dental students around Australia (and the world) are very envious. From GV Black, to Bounce, to Quiz night to the many fundraising events, this semester has been a busy time for the UDSS committee. Special thanks to all the committee members who have organised these fantastic events on top of your busy schedules! I would also like to extend a big thank-you to Pauline Wong for her hard work in designing the fresh and symbolic new UDSS logo, which you can read more about later on in this edition of Probe. Still to come in the year are 2021 UDSS Committee elections and the Annual Dental Dinner. We are hoping to receive a large number of applicants for the committee, so be sure to get yours in early if you wish to apply! The Dental Dinner is probably our biggest event in the year, so it is important to get in early on that one too to secure your ticket. The theme for this year is ‘Narnia’ and I am super excited to see the magical night the Senior Social Reps Emma Turner and Anthony Radziejewski have in store for us!
Finally, as the year is coming to an end and assessment stress is upon us, it is extremely important that you are checking in on your mates and making sure that you are also letting others know how you are feeling. It is even more difficult for many students who will not be returning to their homes during the Christmas break and are thinking about their families and friends. If you are struggling, feel free to approach your Year Rep, myself, or any other committee member for a chat. Also make sure to allow yourself to maintain balance – keep up exercising, hobbies and catching up with friends. There are only a few weeks to go for most of us, and for the fourth years, it is a couple more until you get paid for doing what you do each day! Keep it up, I know you will do amazing, and hope to see you at the Dental Dinner!

FROM THE ARTIST BEHIND THE NEW UDSS LOGO Pauline Wong It was an honour to be tasked with designing a new logo for UDSS. I would like to take this opportunity to describe the process. I chose a traditional approach, with a slight modern adjustment. I started with a hand-drawn illustration, which was then digitally modified, creating full-colour and black and white versions. The elements, firstly: the black swan, a unique symbol of Western Australia. UWA is the state's only tertiary level dental school. So, the black swan is a good representation of our identity - interstate and internationally. The swan looks over its shoulder, 'carrying' and watching over the tooth. The clove plant branches out and flourishes around the swan its oil traditionally used to treat toothache. The enclosure within a circle better suits its use in social media and the internet. The entire logo fits neatly within circular profile picture templates. The circular shape also allows better incorporation of lengthy text. A big thank you to UDSS, my classmates, and Adrian Black for your support and making this possible. I hope you all like it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

We also had a T-shirt design contest for our new UDSS merch. Although the winning design was our new UDSS logo, there were also some worthy competitors, such as the design pictured above by Edmund Wong*! *no relation to Pauline, except that they are both super talented!

SOUP FOR THE SOUL
fundraiser supporting beyond five for head & neck cancer day On Friday the 31st July, our student volunteers cooked up some homemade soup to fundraise for ADSA in conjunction with World Head & Neck Cancer Day. Pumpkin, tom yum, and chicken noodle soup were available, to name a few, as well as bread donated by Brumby's Bakery. We raised $490 and all proceeds were donated to Beyond Five, supporting individuals & families affected by head and neck cancer. Big thanks to everyone involved!

UDSS SOCIAL EVENTS This semester, we were very lucky to be able to celebrate with two UDSS events!
On Saturday 22nd August, UDSS hosted the GV Black Cocktail Party at Mayfair Lane in West Perth. We had an amazing turn out as everyone wanted to break out of lock down mode and enjoy a night out! The night was full of great food and lots of fun, and was a great way to get back into the swing of things after a few months of working from home and taking exams. Our lovely photographer for the night was our very own Neosh Sheikh.

On Saturday the 26th of September, the UDSS hosted their annual Quiz Night at Hollywood Subiaco Bowling Club. This year, the event was sponsored by
Specialist
BOQ
- we thank them greatly for their support and
for assisting us in hosting a fun night! There were guests present from all year levels and everyone brought their A-game to the table. With funny mini-games and rounds of questions from all different genres, there was something for everyone! Almost everyone walked out with at least a prize of some sort, a smile and a belly full of food. Congratulations to the winning team, “rubber damn we’re good at quizzes,” who hold bragging rights for 2020!
The quiz night was the last social event being planned by the Junior Social Reps (of course, don’t forget about the grand finale of events - the Dental Dinner in December!) We would like to thank everyone for letting us have a ball planning events for you in 2020. Although it’s been a bit of a bumpy road for our social lives this year, we still managed to have a good number of events with great turn-outs and bundles of enthusiasm!

SPORT REPORT Our sports & wellbeing reps, Sarah and Noosh, organised some super cool sports activities this sem to help the DMDs relieve some stress while having fun with their peers. We had the pleasure of enjoying a very exciting table tennis tournament and a full day at trampoline park, Bounce!
The Ping Pong Tournament was the 2nd of the Common Room comps and commenced at the beginning of August! Rounds began with 8 pairs of players battling it against each other across 3 sets. In the much awaited final round, Nick Goh scraped through to victory in a close 3rd set against worthy rival, Omar Saleh. Anooshree Katwe 14

This year's sports day was held on 26 September at Bounce Cannington. Some highlights included: dodgeball, basketball, flips, backflips and free bounce socks. The favourite activity was the X-park, which was similar to ninja warrior but with trampolines. NB: we got absolutely demolished by the twelvies at dodgeball. Sarah Phang 15
