From the President

H

i everyone,

and Health Sciences.

Thankfully we’re well past half way of 2014! There has been much going on and a few things to report.

So what is the point in our society af iliating with something like this you ask? The answer lies below in our terms of reference.

G.V. Blacks’ Cocktail Party We all love birthday celebrations, especially when there is a massive cake involved, thanks to Cassidy Shelton (IV). This year, celebrations were held at Llama Bar in Subiaco. Many thanks to the legendary duo, Elke and Thiviya, for coming through with the goods and organising another great event. It was amazing to see the turn out with an all time record of 165 tickets sold, making it the most successful G.V. Blacks’ event that I can remember. The revival of this event has de initely made it one to mark in your calendar for next year!

1. To coordinate advocacy efforts regarding issues that affect multiple health students and professionals in Western Australia. 2. To foster positive inter-professional relationships between students, as a precursor to positive inter-professional relationships in the workplace. 3. To share corporate knowledge, experience and expertise to bene it all members of the Council. 4. To support and cross-promote events. 5. To support event collaborations between members of the Council, with the potential to include networking, social, sporting, academic and leadership events.

Sports Day While you were sleeping in on weekends, there have been some great events for those more physically gifted at the UWA gymnasium. Badminton and basketball were the prime sports this semester, with great turnouts for both. Great work to David and Vincent for organising this! UDSS Elections The time has inally come for us to open nominations for positions on the 2015 UDSS Committee. While the thought of taking on extracurricular activities may seem daunting, it is a great experience to get involved with one of the oldest FacSocs at UWA. I encourage everyone to have a read of the job outlines and talk with existing members on the committee regarding their experiences this year. Health Students’ Council of WA (HSC-WA) Since late semester 1, myself and the other elected HSC member Luke (I) have been working to ensure that dental students are on the forefront of a new collaborative initiative for students of each discipline within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry

Essentially, a couple of events this year this will provide us with more opportunities to get to know students from other areas in the health profession. Hopefully through this we can eliminate a lot of misconceptions out there and strive for excellence when treating our patients as future dental professionals. Personally, I believe that this is particularly important, as much of our dental education does not extend to these areas. Our irst event this year – Group Therapy - will kick off on September 6th at Llama bar in Mount Lawley with tickets at $30. This will be an exciting night with activities throughout to make it a bit different to your typical cocktail parties. We also have an Interprofessional Leadership Conference organised at the new Harry Perkins Institute on the 16th of October. With tickets at $20, there will be several leading guest speakers there on interprofessional education in health and dinner provided as well! Continued next page.

G

V Black’s cocktail party is one of the highlights of the UDSS social calendar. This year it was held in the swanky, Llama Bar in Subiaco!

Cosmos were mixed, tapas served, photos were taken and the beautiful tooth fairy cake was ceremoniously cut. With all the birthday traditions sealed for the night, the party was turned up! The DJ burnt up the dance loor with his beats and with that we started to party harder. The night sure was a memorable one, and with all the amazing professional photos and sneaky photobooth shots it’s memories will live on! It’s with extreme pride that we can say the night was a huge success!! It was really exciting to see such a large turnout of students, dentists, nurses, tutors and friends!! And with this fantastic event, we are signing out for the year. It has been our pleasure to be your social reps for 2014! Much love, Elks and Thivs

Fifth year report

5

th year is the best”, “It’s cruisy, everybody is chilled” and “No exam periods!” This was my impression, as a lower year student, from the older years. And it has proved to be the case for most of the time. By this stage (hopefully) you do know a lot and have sound clinical skills, so all you do is put these into practice on patients that are paying for your services. The supervising dentists generally treat you as an independent practitioner and put trust in your decisions and reasoning, giving you a point out in the right direction or answering any enquiries if necessary. BUT there are always exceptions to the rules. Here are a few traps for the next year to watch out for: 1) 4th year requirements – GET THEM DONE IN 4TH YEAR. They are the biggest pain in the bum trying to organise and cause unnecessary stress. I hear that endodontic cases are always falling through: patients not turning up or extractions needed. For me, it is the elusive restorative post and core. When you are in 5th year (or equivalent) help out your fellow students to get the cases they need. 2) Assignments and Presentations – Not ‘exams’ technically, but they feel the same. Try to get on top of the written assignment early last minute referencing with internet failure is really not cool. Be ready for public speaking with questioning afterwards. Prepare for some tough examiners, they don’t always take your view on everything, be con ident and reason all of your clinical decisions. 3) THE Timetable – It looks a bit daunting to start off with. Generally you don’t get too much useful or practical information about to rural and options rotations so make sure that you help each other out with the transition, for example the alarm code for Bunbury House. You get 7 weeks off for the

whole year so have a proper break, go on holiday and de-stress when you can. With all that said – 5th year is awesome. Looking back at where we all were in 1st year to where we are now is mind-blowing. All of your classmates will soon become your colleagues and the graduation ceremonies are coming when you can inally say “I’m Dr Dentist: BDSc”. So as I sit in this lovely rural setting in Bunbury, watching the sunset with the kangaroos grazing in the distance (totally idyllic), I think to myself the inish is near and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Enjoy the rest of the year. Eloise Host.

Dental Night 2014

O

n Monday the 4th of August, the dental students of University Hall came together for Dental Night of 2014. The aim of the night was to emphasise the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene as well as providing oral hygiene instructions. Also, we had free pizza and dental freebies! Who doesn’t love that? Mei Ling, Lionel, Vireena and I were all involved in delivering the presentation. My part was to introduce the concept of plaque and why it’s important to remove it. To do this we explained the periodontal consequences of poor oral hygiene (i.e. gingivitis and periodontitis) with images of bone loss, gingival recession etc. Additionally, we educated the audience that caries is a disease; which doesn’t end with a illing. We also informed them that further progression of caries may result in the need for a crown or root canal treatment, as well as explaining what they involve and the costs of these procedures. I still get approached today by UniHall students saying they had no idea things could progress that far, and that they’re now putting extra effort into their oral hygiene. The link between bacteria, sugar and caries was explained by Mei Ling, as well as emphasising how frequent snacking increases your risk of developing caries. Lionel delivered the important message of how to brush (the modi ied bass technique) and loss, as well as mentioning how sugar-free gum, milk and cheese help protect your teeth. We also focussed on erosion, with Vireena delivering this section of the presentation. This is particularly important for college students as it is a consequence of bulimia, as well as commonly consumed acidic food and drinks e.g. citrus fruits, Red Bull, alcohol (especially with binge drinking). Together we helped increase the dental knowledge of students at UniHall, and hopefully improved everyone’s oral hygiene.

The presentation was followed up with a student volunteering to use a plaque disclosing tablet, showing the students areas to focus on while brushing. Our lucky volunteer was rewarded with an electric toothbrush! Check out that smile! A very big thank you goes out to Kai Sheng and Anubhav for helping make it all possible. These two really recognised the importance of putting a dental presentation together for the UniHall students and did plenty of work behind the scenes. Anubhav played a large role by liaising with UniHall staff, advertising and raising funds to make the night possible. Kai Sheng contacted sponsors such as Colgate and Oral-B which enabled us to give the audience a manual toothbrush, toothpaste and loss. He also was in contact with the dental health education unit to provide educational posters and picked up the pizzas - therefore, everyone’s hero! Finally, we ended the night with free pizza and oral hygiene demonstrations! A big thank you to Chen, Billy, Calista, Hannah and everyone else who got involved! Adrian Sciarrone.

Are you prepared for arranging your financial/tax planning next year? What are you worried/curious about once you graduate? UDSS encourages all to attend. 23rd September 5:30pm OHCWA Lecture Theatre.

City to Surf 2014 considered him a mentor as well as a friend.

O

n Sunday 31st of August, Perth celebrated its 40th City to Surf – WA’s largest community sporting event. The well-known event, which has evolved over the years, has been raising both money and awareness for the Activ Foundation, which enables people living with disabilities to reach their potential and make real lifestyle choices.

Many of us were touched by the wonderful life Jeff lived and this was evident during our planning process when we discovered that several different groups had started to form, all with the intention of honoring Jeff’s memory. This led us to form one large team, which included students, staff, family, friends and former colleagues and classmates. The design and colour choice of the t-shirts and the large, pink balloons released at the completion of the event re lected Jeff’s bright and cheerful character that he will always be remembered for.

For those involved, the day was a celebration and poignant reminder of Jeff’s memory, which we hope will continue to be celebrated for many years to come. Anna Buckeridge and Marina Gaspar. This years’ City to Surf was an important event for more than one reason. It marked the celebration of the life of Dr Jeff Ong – an inspiring dentist and a remarkable son, brother, friend and mentor. For many students at OHCWA, Jeff was someone who was always approachable and willing to teach and mentor others, no matter how many commitments he had. He would always offer to help students and did so with a big smile on his face. Jeff was enthusiastic, friendly and full of energy. As students, we remember the time and effort he would put into teaching us and many of us

Nautical By Nature

M

any of us think of dental school as stressful, demanding and even horrifying at times. Friday, August 15 was the exception to the rule as NOBOTE 2014 set sail for maritime voyage of scandalous tomfoolery. The night began with drinks and mingling at the Byrneleigh, while we awaited for our loyal cruiser to take us on a journey to be remembered...or not so much! Our second destination, Varsity bar, began with a large order of SHOTS!!! Tequila, salt and lemon was shared by the many 5th years farewelling the worries of case pres. Next stop‌Claremont where countless beverages awaited! After some more mingling, photos, and general mischief, our faithful vessel took us to our inal destination of Club Red Sea. Thanks to everyone who came and helped make it such a great night. Penelope Lindsay.
