President’s Report 2012 Hello Dental Students!
Welcome to 2012 at the Glass Prison! There have been some big changes since last year, unfortunately none of which involve more parking or later start times. The local construction workers have kindly destroyed the neighbouring bushland for a much more pleasant view of an empty carpark and the reticulation system is broken so all the plants are dead. Yay! At least Auntie Kim is back in her new and improved coffee cart!
As you will be aware, we have a non-intake year at the Dental School but rest assured that this year will be as loose as ever! Fresherless welcome is approaching quickly and with the return of boat races it promises to be a night to vaguely remember! I encourage everyone to come along, grab a 2012 t-shirt, meet the talent, responsibly drink to excess and end up swimming in the Swan River.
Sport will have a massive role this year, with old and new events in play. North Nogga will return to its vehicular origins in 2012 and this costumed “Sporting Event” will surely make our dental forefathers proud. Stay tuned for more details! UDSS will be running an AFL footy tipping competition this year and the now annual Sports Day and Sundowner will allow you to show your fellow students who‟s boss.
The School Visit Program that was initiated last year will run again this year will and hopefully be even bigger and better. With our Cocktail Night and Tradeshow and additional sponsorship we hope to increase the size and reach of this program to truly make a difference in the community. I encourage anyone interested to get involved, as it is a truly great and rewarding cause.
UDSS has a very strong committee this year and we look forward to working with and for you all in 2012. Please let your voices be heard and come annoy us with any of your concerns or problems. So far we have had a running start, replacing the two disgusting broken fridges with a brand new, clean one (Please try and keep it in this condition!) and actually releasing a PROBE! WOOOHHH!!!
Stay smiley!

www. asid.org.au The Australian Society of Implant Dentistry (ASID) is an organisation geared toward the promotion, sharing and teaching of knowledge in the field of dental implantology. First formed in 1969, it works to offer a support network for its professional members and information for the general public. We are affiliated with the Australian Dental Association (ADA) and are a component society of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), the world's largest dental implant body. Our independence from direct commercial influence ensures we are free to study all aspects, brands and modalities of implant dentistry, without bias. In turn, this allows us the freedom to give our members and the patients who seek our assistance the best and most appropriate advice possible. The Society upholds its mission with activities on many fronts, such as the financial assistance provided annually to a number of Australian Universities for the establishment of undergraduate implant teaching programs alongside its own post graduate teaching with regular lectures, seminars and accreditation programs it offers. Members are encouraged to undertake our accreditation program, as part of their education in dental implantology. Our society is the only body that offers this facility. Some members have agreed to having their names published in our List of Members. Those who have satisfied the criteria for Accreditation of Members have been highlighted in bold , for your convenience.

Now is the year that we‟re all starting to get a gist of real OHCWA life. That is the 8 o‟clock starts, half hour lunch breaks, 4.30 finishes, and NO main campus attire. The words „professionalism‟ and „infection control‟ have become our most frequently heard words. It‟s also no longer uncommon for us to hear the words „kill myself‟ or „I want to sleep‟ coming from some corners in the locker room during our time here, despite exams being so far away. What cool cats we have become. After being little freshers walking in our big groups together from FAHB‟s business school location to the glass house of horror, we remember being absolutely fascinated by the older years in their smart professional attire (especially after coming from main campus, where most people dressed as though they were on their way to Clubba). And who could have thought that those „big kids‟ are now us. Oh how the times fly. Many of us thought that we would be juvies forever, and that we would have to hide in the bushes every fresher welcome so that the cops don‟t catch us drinking underage (that by the way is a true story dating back to the year 2010, and it‟s probably one of our best memories in Dental school). But what has become so great about this year is that we have all finally got to know each other inside out. Even aunty Kim knows what most of us will order from her: Naomi- Curry puff Nerma- Long black Ilana- Chai Latte Sam- Triple Chocolate cookie And the list goes on, I‟m just a tad „tired‟ from this week to have the motivation to type more down. As they all say we have a busy year planned ahead, but we are going to make sure to take on the workload in style. In brief it‟ll be: hello patients, hello lab, hello dental convention, hello dental dinner, and hello again summer break. Easy (hopefully). Xxo Your fellow third years

Although we are dubbed the “freshers for life” as we are the last official group of Bdsc to go through, first year couldn't have gone any faster! For most of us it was our first time at Uni, living away from home, drinking/ going out or just simply catching public transport by ourselves. It didn't matter what is was, last year was defiantly a year full of firsts! Through out the year their where many 18s and get togethers for some serious bonding time, as we just don't get to spend enough time together! Most of us attended the freshers welcome and wore our UDSS t-shirts with pride and had a glimmer of hope that maybe Dentistry isn‟t study 24/7!?! Well this thought quickly passed when Normal Systems came along in second semester. Many of us dreading the barrier exam, we can now only say “THANK GOD WE PASSED NS”. Now that we are entering second year we are all “excited “ to begin our hours of drilling in optech and leave our main campus life behind so that we may somewhat feel like proper dental students. We have a busy year ahead of us and will look forward to subjecting our partners to some serious pain in SII when we shall attempt a LA injection =P . Good luck =) (Elke ,II)

Hey Dolls, Dental Dinner 2011!...a night which will not be forgotten by most. The most anticipated event of the year, was held at the grand, Frasers Restaurant in Kings Park on Friday the 25th of November. A night which couldn’t come any sooner for some of the female population in dentistry who had been following strict diet and exercise regimes leading up to this night. As for guys, the more you eat, the buffer you get was their policy. On the night, everyone; tutors, nurses, students and their partners all looked spectacular! It was bittersweet night for us all, as we said farewell to the graduating class of 2011, but also a night to celebrate another year of dental school by ‘letting loose’ and getting rid of our exam tension and exam-induced illnesses. The night began with many taking pre-dinner portraits in Kings park, before making our way the entrance of the state reception centre where the steady flow of drinks began. As for the exact details of the night, my memory seems to be failing me. However, I do remember an amazing video put up the 5th years which continued to be praised well after the night itself....and some other great presentations (the details of which, once again I cannot be too sure)! Post-the formal presentations and the lovely meal, many proceeded outside to the D-floor, where our tutors were seen breaking it down and getting out their crunk, while the students were seen stacking it, flat on their faces....thankfully though, due to the amazing invention which we call alcohol, many will be hard pressed to remember the embarrassing specifics from the night. Dental Dinner 2011 was an amazing night and with these memories we can only look forward to the phenomenon which we will be calling ‘Dental Dinner 2012!’ Much love, Thivs (II)

O-Day Rap (To Boyz N Tha Hood- Eazy E) Woke up quick, at about 8 Jus thought I had to be to ODay straight I gotta get setup before the day begins Before WAMSS starts stealin ma dental friends The day was beaut, sunny near went blind Young niggaz at James Oval throwin up club signs Ran in the marquee, and grabbed ma MIPS Bag, the free brush, floss & paste on the side of ma hip, Bailed outside and signed them all up Just as I was done Rincon’s son said sup, Jumped up & sold him UDSS shirt, All the bitches & yo padre will flirt! Then Geoff & Ben Z let the Alpine play Pumpin new shit by NWA It was gangsta gangsta at the top of the list Then I played my own shit and it went something like this: Cruisin down the root in perio Jockin the plaque, scraping with hoes Went to the steri to get the prophy, Knuckleheads out there, mouths are filthy Commit dentistry, bust more teeth than Eazy E
Coz the Dents on main campus are always hard You come talkin that trash, we’ll pull the exo card, Knowin nutin in life but to be qualified legit Dont quote me boy coz I aint said competent shit O-day Review O-day was a success with more than expected interest in the UDSS stall considering there were no dental freshers this year. We were able to say Hi to a few of the assured pathway freshers and also spoke to a few who were interested in doing the postgrad course. There were also simply a lot of people with little interest in dentistry asking for free stuff who appreciated the unique freebies of dental floss and mini toothbrush kits. The stall was also on hand for a few unusual oral health related questions such as "I've heard that brushing my teeth with charcoal will make my teeth whiter, i'm not sure if it's working, what do you think?" Overall it was great to see UDSS represented at the big festival marking the start of the year for normal uni courses with a few other dental students who were lucky enough to escape the glass prison for part of the day. UDSS School Visit This program was initiated and carried out by the UDSS committee 2011 with the help of many students, academic staff & other organisations after almost a year of preparation. 30 dental students from the University of Western Australia participated in this inaugural event, on 29 Nov 2011, at Notre Dame Catholic Primary School, involving 193 primary students. The program’s primary aim is to promote a positive dental experience & dental health awareness to children, particularly in disadvantaged and low socioeconomic areas. It also provides benefits for participating dental students in communication skills, hands-on learning & an enriching experience for participating volunteers. The program will expand in 2012, with 2 trip weeks in June and November, more schools and more dental volunteers! More information will be released in the next month on how to sign up to this rewarding program. CK, Jen, Ryan
