NORWICH: A FINE CITY Explore a dynamic city, where old meets new and you never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner. Catch some comedy at The Playhouse, see a musical act at the 15th century church at Norwich Arts Centre, or watch a performance at the Theatre Royal. Or if cinema is more your thing, choose from one of Norwich’s four cinemas and watch not only the latest releases, but classic, independent and international films as well.

Wander the stalls of the largest outdoor market in the UK in Norwich city centre. It’s home to over 180 stalls selling a vast range of goods and services, including new and vintage fashion, crafts, gifts and flowers. It’s also a great place to get lunch, with market stalls offering a range of traditional British dishes and international cuisine.

Discover more about the history of this vibrant city and the British Isles by visiting the Norwich 12; a showcase of the most historically iconic buildings from across the ages. Walk the cobbled streets up to Norwich Castle, be inspired by the spectacular architecture of Norwich Cathedral, or enjoy a coffee in more contemporary surroundings at The Forum.

Relax after your busy day walking around the city by visiting one of the hundreds of restaurants Norwich has to offer; from international restaurant chains to family-run delis, you’re sure to find something to suit your taste. www.visitnorwich.co.uk

With a large range of both local and international shops, and home to two shopping centres, Norwich has something to suit everyone, no matter what your taste or budget. Pick up a souvenir in Norwich city centre, or escape the bustle and explore independent boutiques for that special gift and discover your new favourite cafe in the Norwich Lanes.

NORFOLK AND BEYOND Step out of the city and into some of the most stunning countryside in the UK. Take a trip to the beautiful Norfolk coastline and discover miles of beaches and world famous nature reserves, before enjoying traditional fish and chips fresh from the seaside. Explore Thetford Forest, the UK’s largest manmade lowland forest, or round up a few friends and go out boating on the Norfolk Broads. Get a taste for rural life by enjoying a country walk, or visiting the unspoilt medieval villages and stately homes that are dotted around Norfolk.

With excellent transport links (including being only two hours from London by train) Norwich is a gateway to the UK and beyond. You could explore not only the rest of the UK, but also mainland Europe during your time with us – with daily direct flights to Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Amsterdam and Manchester from Norwich International Airport, where will your next adventure take you?

Undergraduate Level 5

FIELD TRIPS MAY INCLUDE

Royal Courts of Justice and Supreme Court

Increased access to the internet has played a significant role in how media industries and governments regulate the media. This has led to concerns about human rights and has posed new problems for the law. Many have predicted that the internet will make borders less relevant, especially with the prevalence of smart phones and mobile technologies.

You’ll be encouraged to share the legal systems of your own country to explore the challenges posed by the developments of the ‘information society’. We will investigate the increasingly globalised and integrated media industries, looking to the rule of law and to national legal systems.

MODERN CONFLICT ARCHAEOLOGY AND THE FRIENDLY INVASION SCHOOL OF HISTORY ACCREDITATION

20 UCU credits / 10 ECTS credits

ACADEMIC LEVEL

Undergraduate Level 5

FIELD TRIPS MAY INCLUDE

Imperial War Museum Duxford, sites of commemoration

During the twentieth century, the British landscape was transformed by a huge variety of military constructions. Pillboxes, airfields, coastal batteries, radar sites, bombing decoys, and air defence were all built to defend the country from attack. These sites hold a rich source of information about momentous episodes in British history.

You’ll be introduced to the discipline and methodological approaches of modern conflict archaeology. Using these skills, you’ll then examine in-depth the archaeology of the ‘Friendly Invasion’. You’ll study a wide range of Second World War American military facilities in the UK including airfields and sites associated with D-Day.

SUPPLEMENT

£300 for residential field trip

The poet and dramatist Ben Jonson described his ‘beloved’ friend and sometime rival William Shakespeare as ‘not of an age, but for all time!’, and Shakespeare’s plays are still celebrated for their ‘timeless’ or ‘universal’ appeal, but it might be more useful, if less poetic, to say he was both of an age and for all time.

You’ll be invited to develop your understanding of the exquisite linguistic and dramatic qualities of Shakespeare’s plays, and to consider these works in light of the peculiarities of the historical and cultural moment in which they were first written and performed. Watch the plays come to life from the page, as we enjoy live productions and consider the ways in which Shakespeare’s theatre functioned.
