JAPAN ORIENTATION Japan plays a very significant role in the contemporary world, yet it is still seen by many as an unknown and distant culture. This focussed short course will allow students to explore the latest approaches to Japanese Studies. The programme will be delivered by our specialised Centre for Japanese Studies (CJS) and will concentrate on stimulating discussion with speakers who are leading researchers in the field of Japanese Studies, in culture, history, international relations, business, media and much more. The course is suited to those currently at university who are interested in the latest approaches to East Asian studies, and will draw upon the Centre’s dedication to producing excellent interdisciplinary research on Japan. It will provide an introduction to gaining a deeper understanding of the past, present and future of Japan. Japan Orientation is one of the accredited modules within the University’s four-week International Summer School. Fully funded scholarships The programme is supported by the Toshiba International Foundation (TIFO), a non-profit, grant making organisation dedicated to promoting an understanding of Japan through international exchanges while contributing to local and global community development. We are pleased to be offering 12 TIFO funded scholarships to applicants from the Visegrad Group (V4) countries; Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. The Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures (SISJAC) is also funding 3 additional scholarships for applicants from the UK and Europe, outside of the V4 countries. Scholarships are inclusive of: – All tuition fees, field trips and tutorials – Up to £250 reimbursement towards travel costs – Four-week Norwich travel card – Weekday lunches – Academic transcript and certificate of attendance – Airport transfer from London Heathrow at 3pm on 24 June – Return airport transfer from UEA campus at 8am on 21 July – Four weeks on-campus private en suite accommodation in a shared flat – Induction and orientation programme – Social activities (supplements are due for certain additional activities) – Finale celebrations including gala dinner and karaoke – Assessment and study skills workshop – Guided self-study support sessions. We require all applicants to complete an online scholarship application form, detailing their interest in Japan. Always a good place for a night out, the city offers a variety of restaurants, stylish bars, theatres and nightclubs. There are also 2 large shopping centres and a thriving cross-section of eclectic boutiques and independent shops and cafes. There is a great deal of history within the city walls of Norwich, the city boasts over 30 medieval churches, 2 cathedrals and a Norman castle, alongside numerous art galleries and museums. Rail, bus and air links allow students to make the most of their summer study period. London is less than 2 hours away by direct train which means that Norwich is ideally located to explore the UK and Europe. The city boasts an international airport with daily connections to and from Amsterdam, making it easy to travel further afield. Our campus has a great community feel with shops, cafes, accommodation and teaching rooms all a short walk from each other, surrounded by green space and countryside.

The International Summer School team also provide: – First class academic tuition – Useful and informative study skills advice and support sessions – An online platform of learning and teaching resources – Academic tutorial sessions – 24-hour pastoral care and emergency contact – Weekday reception desk for all general queries including travel advice – Extensive inclusive and additional social programme – Residential staff In addition to activities included within the scholarship or fee, for a small supplement social trips will be on offer to students wanting to explore more of the UK with us. These trips will be escorted by an experienced student ambassador with all arrangements made by the International Summer School team, meaning students have more time to relax and enjoy their time in the UK! Activities include weekender trips to London and Cambridge, or Stonehenge, Bath and Windsor, as well as a day trip to the Harry Potter studio.
