The School of Music plays an important role in the academic life of the university and the community. The UF School of Music educates some of the most gifted and academically capable music students. Its programs provide broad-based instruction in performance, composition, history and literature and music disciplines, through a strong curriculum as well as through professional experiences such as ensembles and internships.

Bachelor of Music

Programs of study are available in performance: keyboard (piano, organ, harpsichord), voice, wind, percussion and strings; theory; and music in combination with an outside field. The curricula is intended for students who plan to enter professional careers, graduate study, private studio teaching or college/university-level teaching.

Bachelor of Music in Music Education

With 100% job placement rate, the School of Music prepares music education students to become accomplished music teachers. The music education faculty is nationally and internationally recognized as leaders and teachers. This curriculum is approved by the Florida Department of Education, National Association of Schools of Music and the National Council for Teacher Education and fulfills the education requirements for K-12 teaching certification in Florida and additional states.

Bachelor of Arts

The Bachelor of Arts curriculum is designed for students who desire a liberal arts education with an emphasis in music. Programs are available in music, music history, ethnomusicology or music theory/composition.

Make yourself stand out among thousands of applicants to professional schools! DOUBLE MAJOR/DUAL DEGREE Combine a Bachelor of Music degree with most other majors offered at the University of Florida. Not interested in a secondary degree? Use your combined credits for any field of interest, or earn a minor or certificate.

Offering masters and doctoral programs in Music and Music Education, faculty at the University of Florida prepare students as performers, leaders, teachers and researchers. Students work closely with national and international faculty. The Master of Music degree requires a minimum of 32 credits (Music Education requires 33 credits) and the Ph.D. requires 96 credits.

Funding Opportunities The University of Florida has several forms of financial support to offer to incoming graduate students. While some awards provide lump sum payments, graduate assistantships are school-based employment opportunities, which provide an annual stipend and benefits, such as tuition waivers and free health insurance. Doctoral student support also includes Graduate School Fellowships, the College of the Arts Humanities Teaching Fellowships Grinter Fellowships, the McKnight Doctoral Fellowship, and Dissertation Completion Fellowships. All students may apply for Graduate School funded awards, such as the Board of Education Summer Fellowships and travel awards.

GET INVOLVED! Summer Opportunities SALZBURG STUDY ABROAD AND INTERNSHIPS This six-week study abroad program with an optional additional six-week internship allows music majors to study in Austria with European faculty. The program is also ideal for political science, history, economics and business double majors. The program includes extended field trips to Munich and Vienna, as well as daily excursions in and around Salzburg. UF TEACH THE WORLD IN ROME This short-term program allows students to experience interning in an international school. Students spend two weeks with teachers in a selected discipline and explore the cultural fabric and history of Europe. OPERAFESTIVAL DI ROMA Founded in 1995, the award winning Operafestival di Roma is a nonprofit educational institution that offers opportunities to musicians from all nations to study and perform opera in Italy in the summer. BRAZILIAN MUSIC INSTITUTE The University of Florida’s Brazilian Music Institute (BMI) is a training ground for Brazilian music. Combining classical and popular styles of music, each year the BMI brings outstanding artists together for a weeklong event designed to extend the experience and expand the possibilities of learning and performing Brazilian music. SACRED MUSIC WORKSHOP Each year the University of Florida hosts a Sacred Music Workshop with master classes with a guest clinician and sessions ranging from directing a bell choir to learning to play hymns in a variety of settings and styles. UF INTERNATIONAL PIANO FESTIVAL Originating in 2007, UFIPF, brings together guest artists and students from around the world for master classes, lessons and recitals.
