Brazilian Music Institute (BMI) SUMMER 2022 DATES TO BE ANNOUNCED. New World School of the Arts (Miami)

This year, the Brazilian Music Institute celebrates Jazz. Founded and directed by Dr. Welson Tremura in 2001, the University of Florida’s Brazilian Music Institute (BMI) program is sponsored by the College of the Arts, Center for Latin American Studies, and School of Music. The Brazilian Music Institute in 2022 aspires to continue building its outreach mission and collaboration with the NWSA students and faculty, as well as to engage our University of Florida students in a rich artistic and professional experience in South Florida. The BMI mission of promoting, recruiting and integrating artists, faculty, and students from the USA and Latin America has fashioned an innovative spirit in our artistic program that incorporates classical, jazz musicians, and culture specialists. The recent collaborations among UF and NWSA faculty and students continue to lead to a path of success and a training ground for musicians and artists from diverse backgrounds. Furthermore, the BMI educational component bridges our UF mission and commitment to higher learning grounded in solid musical and cultural experiences with a robust group of artists and faculty exploring various musical repertoires of Brazil and the USA. Combining classical, jazz, and folk styles of music each year, the BMI brings outstanding artists for a weeklong event designed to extend the experience and expand the possibilities of learning with a strong emphasis on building a training ground for a professional life in music. Through daily rehearsals and group lessons, the BMI offers a challenging and exciting atmosphere in addition to an aesthetically and socially rewarding activity for all participants. The Brazilian Music Institute is a genuine Brazilian musical experience in the United States. Instrumental Studio Music Camp SAT JUNE 18 - SUN JUNE 19 UF Total Musicianship Band Camp SUN JUNE 19 – SAT JUNE 25 Gatorland Band & Instrumental Music Camps are designed to offer student musicians the ability to experience the beautiful University of Florida campus, live and learn in our facilities, and get to know the wind and percussion faculty while participating in exciting music learning experiences. All campers are under constant supervision by DCF-certified camp counselors who are also licensed educators, and can attend as residential or commuter campers. The two-day Instrumental Studio Music Camp gives high school students the opportunity to study with UF Studio Faculty and Alumni in individual instrument-specific master-classes, working on technique, solo and ensemble literature, and All-State audition music. The UF Total Musicianship Band Camp provides an excellent opportunity for musicians with a minimum of one year of study on their chosen instrument to improve their individual performance skills while participating in full-band rehearsals, master-classes, sectionals, chamber winds, and optional private lessons—all under the guidance of the professional faculty, staff, and distinguished alumni of the University of Florida. Students will have the opportunity to take elective classes in student leadership, conducting/drum major skills, theory, rhythm skills, improvisation, marching auxiliaries and other related areas. Each camp will conclude with a performance in the amazing Steinbrenner Band Hall or the beautiful University Auditorium. All Camp attendees will live like Gators in the University of Florida residence halls and eat at the fabulous UF dining facilities.
