About the School of Music The School of Music is one of the three institutionally-accredited schools at the University of Florida College of the Arts. The music program was first organized in 1927 and officially became known as the School of Music in 1995. The school plays an important role in the academic life of the university and the community. The school’s programs provide broad-based instruction in performance, composition, history and literature, and music disciplines through a strong curriculum as well as through professional experiences such as ensembles and internships. UF students also have the opportunity to join more than a dozen music ensembles, including jazz bands, the University Choir, the University Symphony Orchestra and the Gator Marching Band. Mutlu G. Campus Safety and Security All camps held on the UF campus will have a staff of adult counselors who have undergone specialized UF training and authorization for working with minors. Housing Many camps held on the UF campus will provide on-campus dormitory housing. Meals Many camps held on the UF campus provide daily meals through Gator Dining cafeterias. In addition, there are many restaurants within walking distance of campus.
UF Sacred Music Workshop SUN MAY 5 – TUE MAY 7 The UF Sacred Music Workshop is two-day event designed for church and synagogue musicians (organists, choir directors, handbell choir directors, and singers). This year’s workshop will begin on the evening of Sunday, May 5 with an organ recital by a rising artist in downtown Gainesville. Attendees will have the opportunity to attend workshop sessions on such topics as hymn playing, service playing, anthem accompaniment, MIDI technology, choral conducting, and vocal health. A musical presentation on the evening of Monday May 6 will be held in the University Auditorium. The event will also include a choral reading session of octavos supplied by leading sacred music publishers. The workshop will conclude on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 7, with an organ masterclass led by UF organ professor, Laura Ellis. Musicians from all faith backgrounds are welcomed! Organ Masterclass
Brazilian Music Institute (BMI) MON MAY 13 – SAT MAY 18 Founded and organized by Dr. Welson Tremura in 2001, the University of Florida’s Brazilian Music Institute is sponsored by the College of the Arts, Center for Latin American Studies and School of Music. The Brazilian Music Institute brings in world-class performing musicians from Brazil and the USA to the University of Florida campus for a one-week intensive series of master classes, rehearsals, outreach activities, and public performances involving students, faculty, and community artists. Through daily rehearsals, group lessons, and lectures, the goal of the Brazilian Music Institute is to provide students and faculty artists as well as K-12 teachers distinctive musical training and an artistic vision of Brazil’s dynamic musical culture. The Institute allows musicians and guest artists to explore and expand personal relations to create a challenging and exciting atmosphere to experience and learn about Brazilian musical practices and its diverse culture. Gator Chamber Music Institute (GCMI) SUN JUNE 9 – SAT JUNE 15 The region’s most significant early-summer festival of its kind, the Gator Chamber Music Institute is an intensive weeklong workshop that is open to a limited number of highlyqualified college and high school string players and pianists. Participants are coached by renowned faculty from the University of Florida and elsewhere as they immerse themselves in a complete major work from the standard repertoire in preparation for a festival-ending performance. Students also receive two individual lessons and have opportunities to perform in solo and ensemble masterclasses. Daily schedules include coachings and rehearsal time for ensembles, group sessions, time for individual practice, as well as unique interactive activities with faculty, such as sight-reading sessions and panel discussions exploring the history of chamber music and the special skills required to be a successful performer. The Institute will conclude with public concerts performed by faculty and student groups. Students will be housed on our attractive and safe campus within easy walking distance of the School of Music. Applications are accepted from individuals and pre-formed groups. UF International Piano Festival SAT JUNE 15 – SAT JUNE 22 The UF International Piano Festival offers an enriching musical experience through its intensive program designed for both college and pre-college pianists. In addition to daily lessons, numerous masterclasses and guest artist recitals by worldrenowned pianists, students will have ample opportunities to perform in recitals and attend workshops throughout the week. Instrumental Studio Music Camp SAT JULY 13 AND SUN JULY 14 UF Total Musicianship Band Camp SUN JULY 14 – SAT JULY 20 Gatorland Band & Instrumental Music Camps are designed to offer student musicians the ability to experience the beautiful University of Florida campus, live and learn in our facilities, and get to know the wind and percussion faculty while participating in exciting music learning experiences. All campers are under constant supervision by DCF certified camp counselors who are also licensed educators. The two-day Instrumental Studio Music Camp gives high school students the opportunity to study with UF Studio Faculty and Alumni in individual instrument-specific master-classes, working on technique and solo and ensemble literature, as well as All-State audition music. The UF Total Musicianship Band Camp provides an excellent opportunity for musicians with a minimum of one year of study on their chosen instrument to improve their individual performance skills while participating in full-band rehearsals, master-classes, sectionals, chamber winds, music electives and optional private lessons - all under the guidance of the professional faculty, staff, and distinguished alumni of the University of Florida. Students will have the opportunity to take elective classes in student leadership, conducting/drum major skills, theory, rhythm skills, improvisation, marching auxiliaries and other related areas. Each camp will conclude with a performance in the amazing Steinbrenner Band Hall or the beautiful University Auditorium. All Camp attendees will live like Gators in the University of Florida residence halls and eat at the fabulous UF dining facilities. This is a wonderful and rare opportunity to make new friends and perform great music in beautiful venues while receiving world-class instruction at a world-class institution.
