WAHIAWA CIVIC CENTER
PRECEDENT STUDIES Precedent studies offer tried-solutions to problems solved in similar projects. These projects offer strategies that can be applied to the Wahiawa Civic Center. The range of civic center precedents presented in this section are located in the United States but vary in building and property size, and civic population. Contents Each precedent study includes quick facts, diagrams, and photos. A co-location map shows where the civic center is located relative to other state or city agencies. A site plan illustrates circulation and programming. Additionally, a program adjacency diagram indicates how programs within the project are related to one another. Layered on top of these program adjacency diagrams are architectural features that appear in many of the precedents. UHCDC Civic Design Strategies Each precedent is evaluated by how successfully it accomplishes each of the civic design strategies laid out in the literature review section.

CIVIC CENTER PRECEDENTS
CIVIC CENTER KEY TAKEAWAYS Design and Programmatic Takeaways The synthesis of the research data identifies patterns and typologies. While not all precedents utilize all design strategies and architectural features listed, we can extrapolate what a typical civic center should include. Radar diagrams on the following spread suggests that most civic centers can enhance community connections and make public spaces comfortable and welcoming. However, civic centers have a more difficult time fostering local democracy and celebrating community identity. In terms of architectural features, most civic centers have some sort of public stair, plaza and a dedicated pedestrian street. However, research shows that a covered entry and colonnades don’t necessarily appear in all civic centers.
