Welcome During late 2012 our Board attended a Board to Board with the Strategic Health Authority’s Board. Following this, and in light of the report from the Historic Due Diligence audit (carried out as part of the Strategic Health Authority’s assessment of our preparedness for Foundation Trust status), it was decided that we review our proposed timeline for achieving Foundation Trust status. Significant challenges for the Trust were: • Financial sustainability • The number of Board members new to the Board • Performance against national targets especially in Accident & Emergency As the NHS Trust Development Authority took over the role of oversight of aspirant Foundation Trusts from the Strategic Health Authority, it requested that all

aspirant Foundation Trusts reconsidered and re-submitted their proposed timelines as part of the annual plan submission in March, which we did. We are awaiting the NHS Trust Development Authority’s formal response to this but they have indicated informally their acceptance. We are now working on plans and preparations along these lines and hope to be in a position to resubmit an application during 2015/16.

There are still 100 NHS provider Trusts awaiting FT status. Priorities for UHCW’s application now are: - Board capacity and capability following appointment to Board vacancies; - Meeting Monitor’s robust financial ratings; - A&E performance; - Maintaining performance against all other national targets.

As you will see later in this newsletter we are preparing to have further Board changes on the Non-Executive side, as two Non Executive Directors’ second terms of office end shortly (they cannot remain beyond two terms), one Non Executive Director has resigned and the Chairman is to leave us. Nationally, the Foundation Trust application process is slow, especially for Acute Trusts, with only 3 being licensed in the last 18 months.

University Hospital unveils plans to improve access and car parking We have revealed new plans which add additional car parking capacity and a second entrance to the rear of the University Hospital site. The proposals include the addition of two car park decks, improved bus lanes, a new and improved patient drop off area and revised signage. They also put forward an access to the rear of the hospital via Brade Drive for a small number of hospital staff and emergency vehicles. The scheme is the culmination of research that has been undertaken over the last few months including the trial of a one way system and traffic modelling work by engineering and planning firm, Arup.

Trust Chairman Philip Townshend has decided to step down from May 2013 after thirteen years as a Non Executive Director. In announcing his decision, Phil said: “Our Trust is at the cutting edge of design and technology and the delivery of high quality and safe patient services, but its greatest asset are the people who work there. I’ve been proud to work alongside these people as the Trust has achieved so much over the past few years.” Andy Hardy, Chief Executive Officer of the Trust said: “I have been proud to work with Phil over the last nine years, the last three as Chief Executive. At a time when there has been much turmoil in the NHS he has provided strong leadership in making the Trust the leading example that it is and his passion has never faltered. I wish him well for the future.”

Ian Crich, Executive Director who has lead responsibility for Trust facilities said: “We are conscious of the publics’ view of both access and car parking to the University Hospital site. In the last 12 months we have made changes on site including the introduction of Chip and PIN machines, added 150 extra visitor car park spaces and a new car park on waste ground. However we know from our work with Arup that more can still be done to improve things for patients and staff.” Chief Executive Officer Andy Hardy said: “These plans give University Hospital a real chance to alleviate the ongoing congestion and access issues that have affected the site for some time. “I hope the public will welcome and support these changes which are proposed in direct response to the feedback we have had both on car parking capacity and onsite congestion. “It is our intention to still look to pursue the rear of site planning application with Gallagher Estates as this will complement any work undertaken now as part of a long term sustainable solution. “As always, our focus is on the provision of high quality and safe care to our acutely sick patients and therefore, as part of that, we remain committed to looking at all options available to improve access and parking to the UH site.”

The process for recruiting a new Chairman has been started by the NHS Trust Development Authority.

Paving the way forward

Cutting edge equipment donated to help high risk pregnancies The Centre for Reproductive Medicine at University Hospital, Coventry and the University of Warwick can now help more couples who are experiencing difficulties with pregnancy, with the help of a first class Embryoscope. The £65,000 Embryoscope was kindly donated for research by the Warwickshire Private Hospital (WPH) Charitable Trust and this week Trustees from the charity were able to see this piece of important equipment in action. The Embryoscope provides detailed, non-invasive scanning of individual human embryos throughout their first week of development, allowing cutting edge interpretation of embryo quality. This directly benefits couples having IVF treatment, while the research will help women with high-risk pregnancies.

She said: “The Embryoscope helps to diagnose embryos with the best chances of starting a pregnancy, which is great news for IVF patients. Taking part in the research does not affect the couple’s IVF treatment at all, but it provides us with the means to study how embryos communicate with the mother in the crucial first few days of pregnancy. We are thrilled with the early results from the Embryoscope and wish to publicly thank the WPH Charitable Trust for its support.”

Professor Geraldine Hartshorne, Professorial Fellow at Warwick Medical School and Scientific Director of the Centre for Reproductive Medicine, who leads the embryology research, is offering IVF patients the opportunity to use the Embryoscope in their treatment and to participate in the research.

Professor of Obstetrics and Honorary Consultant Obstetrician, Siobhan Quenby said: “On behalf of UHCW and the University of Warwick I would like to thank WPH Charitable Trust for this generous donation. The Embryoscope will be used in research to study the very early causes of pregnancy

complications and how implantation can be improved. “We hope that this research will help to develop new treatments to improve the likelihood of successful pregnancies and reduce problems that cause recurrent failure and pregnancy complications.”

University Hospital has a Wheelie Good Idea The Trust is starting a trial to encourage visitors and patients to return wheelchairs to their stations. University Hospital is using a system similar to that used in many supermarkets in the area and was introduced after the purchase of additional wheelchairs at the Coventry site. Wheelchairs will be fitted with a slot capable of taking a £1 coin (or equivalent sized token) which is returned to the user once they have finished with the chair. Lincoln Dawkin, Director of Estates and Facilities said: “Two of the biggest concerns from visitors to University Hospital is that wheelchairs are not available or that they are left out in the car parks and not returned to the wheelchair station. “ “The Trust has purchased an additional 21 chairs to address the first concern. By trialling the wheelchair coin / token system we hope users will return the chairs to the stations by the main entrances of the hospital.” The Charity Office in the Main Reception of University Hospital will be selling suitable tokens for £1. These tokens, complete with key ring, are reusable and the proceeds from sales will be used to enhance patient care and facilities at University Hospital in Coventry and the Hospital of St Cross, Rugby. The trial is due to be run for six months. If successful the system will be rolled out to all wheelchairs at the hospital.

Meet the Healing Arts Coordinator My name is Emma Linnane and I joined as Arts Coordinator for the Healing Arts Programme in March 2011. My role is to deliver an effective programme of arts for our patients at University Hospital and the Hospital of St Cross. Much has been achieved to date. We have gathered an extensive collection of contemporary art including bespoke pieces for the Women’s and Children’s Entrance and Main Reception of University Hospital, and through donations we have installed temporary exhibition spaces along the hospital corridors for local artists, community groups and schools. I am working to increase our exhibition spaces even more, ensuring work can be seen on the approach to all of our wards and day units. Supporting a comprehensive approach to care, I hope to introduce other areas of the arts such as dance, music, theatre and literature, to help patients identify and address their concerns about their illness and conditions and improve recovery and recuperation. A diverse range of activities will be introduced to complement all services including the care of elderly, children, those having regular chemotherapy or transfusions as well as those visiting the hospital for a short period. The Healing Arts Programme relies solely on donations to the Trust Charity, therefore as part of my role I will undertake plans to effectively raise funds for any future projects. I have a degree in Fine Art Photography and have strong personal interest in visual arts. I have

coordinated a series of exhibitions including my own and in 2009 I received an award for an individual piece of work and was granted an exhibition within an international art festival. Working independently as an artist I have a wide understanding of contemporary art of all genres and hope to bring this to our patients at UHCW.

Become an exhibitor As part of the Healing Arts Programme we provide local artists, educational institutions and creative groups with the chance to exhibit works at University Hospital in Coventry.

Creative Workshops and Performances To develop our programme further we are now introducing a series of creative workshops and performances to compliment patient care and wellbeing.

We welcome: • Storytellers • Creative writing and poetry groups • Theatre and drama performances • Puppetry and magic • Arts and crafts workshops

Centre of Excellence Welcome to the University Hospital Centre for Reproductive Medicine One of the leading fertility centres and one of the first NHS hospitals to offer IVF We were the first NHS Hospital in the West Midlands to set up a successful IVF programme. In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) was first undertaken at the centre in 1990 following a successful charity appeal to set up the unit. Our services have developed considerably since then, and we have now carried out thousands of cycles of IVF and ICSI in addition to thousands of other treatments. Approximately half of the IVF and ICSI treatments we undertake are NHS funded but the CRM also provides treatments to self funding patients. The service is provided by a friendly multi-disciplinary team of 40 who together bring considerable experience and expertise in the field. We also hold combined clinics with specialists in Endocrinology and Urology and have close links with Genetics and Biochemistry. The team works closely with other experts in the related areas of gynaecology, early pregnancy and obstetrics to provide a seamless service. Patients have the safety of being treated in a major hospital with state-of-the-art facilities very close at hand.
