A GREAT PLACE TO WORK December is already here and brings with it the last issue of UHR|Connect for 2017. UHR has been busy this past year building and strengthening partnerships. We’ve seen the formation of several key groups to help guide, build, and empower the campus.

We have also seen many resources being made available to everyone on campus. UHR has attempted to help raise awareness of these programs and thank those that have reached out to us for help. One such example, is the Weight Watchers @ Work program here on campus sponsored by the Health Center. You can read more about this great program inside.

Coming in 2018 UHR Learning and Talent Development is excited to introduce brand-new training courses for University employees. Starting in 2018, several new courses will be available, in addition to updates to existing courses. The new courses will help you better understand yourself and others with the goal of providing skills to be more successful in the workplace and in life. They also provide information on supervising staff and students and creating a thriving workplace.
The new courses for supervisors •

Creating and Leading an Engaged-Empowered workplace: This leadership course is based on the premise that the path to great leadership starts with a deep understanding of the strengths supervisors and staff bring to the table. Participants are given tools to empower and engage staff to create and maintain a thriving workplace. Communicate through Team Conflict: This course helps you explore the five conflict-handling modes. Learn about your mode and other modes in order to work more effectively together. Supervising Students and Graduate Assistants: This course gives foundational leadership skills and also provides a forum for sharing and brainstorming ideas on how to inspire and motivate our student workforce.

KEYS to an Engaged and Empowered Workplace series (formerly EDI): This three course series, designed for individual contributors (non-supervisors) is a powerful series that gives participants the knowledge and skills to help create an engaged and empowered workplace. Modules include; Keys to a Positive Workplace, Effective Communication Skills and Conflict as Opportunity. Learners are exposed to new ideas and tools designed to help participants recognize that they have the power to create a thriving workplace. So You Want to be a Supervisor? is a new course that gives aspiring supervisors the knowledge and insight needed to help decide if a career in leadership is right for them. Let’s Focus on Your Strengths: This workshop helps you to learn about your top strengths and how to use them every day to be more self-aware and improve

your performance. It can be used as a team building training workshop. Understanding Others Starts with Understanding ME!! (the MBTI Personal Impact Report workshop): This course helps you better understand yours and your colleagues’ leadership types and explores how you can use this information to succeed. Master Facilitator: This is a two-day program for anyone involved with or interested in how to conduct and develop trainings and workshops.
To better serve our participants, we are refining and repositioning our workshops to align with leadership tracks and functions. Some of the updates made to existing courses include: 1.

The addition of a new module on Performance Management Fundamentals to Leadership Development Initiatives I (LDI I). This new module gives leaders a simple, fair, and effective process for ensuring that employees are involved and engaged in establishing and achieving performance objectives. Rebranding of LDI II for supervisors who have a minimum of five years’ experience. They now have the opportunity to take their leadership skills to the next level by attending UMD Champion Leadership.

Weight Watchers @ Work Did you know that Weight Watchers @ Work is available right here at UMD? The group meets for 30 minutes on Wednesdays at 12:00 noon in the Health Center – on the lower level. Weight Watchers @ Work is available for a reasonable monthly fee, and it includes group support with wonderful tips from WW members here on campus, a professional WW leader to answer questions and review a weekly discussion topic, and weekly weigh-ins. The Weight Watchers goal is to help members be aware of what they eat and make smart, easy, and healthy food choices. There are several formats members can follow, such as Smart Points or Simply Filling –you choose what works best for you. In addition to the leader, WW staff are available 24/7 to answer questions. The WW website makes tracking a breeze, and the mobile app lets you scan bar codes in the grocery store to determine the points! You can even take
UHR|CONNECT | Vol. 3, No. 12 a picture of your plate and get an estimate of the points! With all the focus on healthy living, most insurance companies offer some level of reimbursement. If you are in the CareFirst or United Health Care plan through the state of Maryland, you are eligible for reimbursement up to $150 per plan year for your WW@Work membership.

Celebrating 20 Years In October 2017, the College Park City-University Partnership celebrated its 20th Anniversary with two events — an academic forum followed by an evening reception. The goal: to celebrate our organization’s 20th anniversary and to think intellectually about our Partnership and how it can serve as a model for other university communities nationwide.
The academic forum featured former Governor Parris Glendening, Former USM Chancellor and UMD President in 1997 at the Partnership’s founding, Brit Kirwan, Omar Blaik, CEO of U3 Advisors and Consultant to UMD and the Partnership, Donna Wiseman, current PGCPS Board of Education member and former UMD Dean of the College of Education and Gerrit J. Knaap, Executive Director of the UMD National Center for Smart Growth. About 60 people attended the event, and panelists had a lively conversation about the College Park Partnership’s first 20 years, how city, university,
The evening reception was held to celebrate the Partnership’s many shared accomplishments and purpose. Over 95 people attended this event, including former Governor Parris Glendening, State Delegate Joseline Peña-Melnyk, District 3 County Councilmember Dannielle Glaros, and College Park Councilmembers. To kick off the event, Partnership Board Chair Sen. Jim Rosapepe and Partnership Vice-Chair Carlo Colella introduced UMD president Dr. Loh and Mayor Wojahn. Mayor Wojahn then spoke about the importance of a strong collaboration in College Park between the city and the university, and Dr. Loh echoed that sentiment and said that his commitment to the university district vision was being institutionalized so that this progress could continue well into the future. Board members Maxine Gross, Brian Darmody and Richard Wagner then presented framed statements of the University District Vision 2020 to former board members including: Ralph Bennett, Michele LaRocca, Andy Fellows and Bob Catlin, as well as to Frank Brewer, former executive director. A short video of the Partnership’s work was shown to end the formal program and let attendees enjoy the rest of the evening at MilkBoy ArtHouse, the new restaurant and arts venue in downtown College Park. Prescription Drug Carrier CVS Caremark - New Prescription Drug Carrier 1/1/18 In case you missed it, we have new prescription drug carrier effective January 1, 2018. Express Scripts will no longer provide this coverage after December 31, 2017. Everyone enrolled in the prescription drug plan will receive new ID cards in late December. Cut up the Express Scripts cards on January 1 and present the new CVS Caremark to your pharmacy for any prescriptions filled on or after January 1.
CareFirst Vision CareFirst is expanding their vision network to include all national providers in the Davis Vision group effective January 1, 2018. This will significantly improve participant access to innetwork care. As a result, everyone enrolled in CareFirst will receive new ID cards in December. Please be on the lookout for mailings from Carefirst around the end of December.

WW @ Chesapeake Twenty-two employees in the Chesapeake Building participated in the Weight Watchers @ Work Program and collectively lost 257.8 pounds in the first 12-week session. During the second 12-week session, 15 employees in the Chesapeake Building participated and collectively lost 101 pounds. If you are in the CareFirst or United Health Care plan through the state of Maryland, you are eligible for reimbursement up to $150 per plan year for your WW@Work membership. If you are interested in joining the Chesapeake Building group, we will be starting a 17-week session soon. PRD Task Force One of the outcomes of the Thriving Workplace Initiative is the recognition that our performance feedback system needs review and possible replacement or tweaking. A task force has been created to begin work now and will continue working throughout the remainder of the academic year. Its charge is to provide a brief report and series of recommendations that will be passed on to the President and to the Vice President for Administration and Finance.
The task force has been charged to 1.
Review best practices and current research on the subject of performance feedback.

Collect information from a wide cross-section of the campus on what they desire and need in such a system. This may involve campus-wide "open invitation" listening sessions for data gathering and/or interviews/focus groups with key stakeholders.

Identify any currently existing or commercially available systems that might work, and suggest an implementation timeline for a new system. Take into consideration the possibility of the university purchasing an Oracle or Workday Human Capital Management system in the future, which may already have performance management tools built within the system. Develop a strategy for implementation of the task force recommendations.
