Walk Like a Penguin

Jacinta Felice, Associate Director in Residential Facilities, suggested these tips for navigating icy parking lots and sidewalks. While the dedicated staff of Facilites Management do a phenominal job at keeping our walkways free of ice, there may be a time when you come across a patch of ice. Listen to the experts and walk like a penguin to help you avoid that painful slip on to the pavement.    

relations team on January 23. A former German instructor at Purdue University and high school German teacher, Scott brings an array of skills to his new position, including over a decade of collective bargaining, grievance resolution, and mediation.

Scott began his legal career in Maryland in 2005 after graduating from Willamette University College of law in 2005.

Between 2005 and 2013, he worked as a representative for the Washington and Frederick County Teachers Association. In that role, he represented the interests of over 2,000 teachers and educational support personnel. In 2013, Scott founded MidAtlantic Negotiators, a Hagerstown consulting firm that represented both private and public sector employers in collective bargaining, labor arbitration, and human resources administration. Scott looks forward to utilizing his experience and taking on new challenges in his role as staff relations coordinator at the University of Maryland.

Winter Storm Warning (Take Action): Confidence is High – A winter storm will produce heavy snow, sleet or freezing rain and cause significant impacts.

Winter Storm Watch (Be Prepared): Confidence is Medium – A winter storm could produce heavy snow, sleet, or freezing rain and cause significant impacts.

Winter Weather Advisory (Exercise Caution): Wintry weather expected. Light amounts of wintry precipitation or patchy blowing snow will cause slick conditions.

Lunch & Learn February’s Lunch & Learn will focus on Blood Pressure: A Vital Force for Life. Learn what your blood pressure should be, the risk factors for high blood pressure, and how to take control of your risk. The Lunch & Learn will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017 in 1101U Chesapeake Building from 12:00 – 1:00pm.

Kibbi Henderson joined the UHR Support Center Staff on January 23 bringing over 6 years of front line customer service experience with her. She has been employed on campus since 2015 working in the University of Maryland Libraries where she implemented a New Employee Orientation Program and prehire Assessment for hourly employees. She was instrumental in developing new processes for improving the hiring process, and has served as a mentor for several student workers. Kibbi has served on many Search Committees and has been instrumental in the creation of training and professional development programs for hourly support staff. Kibbi has a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and a Master's Degree in Human Resource Management, and is passionate about Diversity and Inclusion within Higher Education.

Just a reminder – the flexible spending account carrier changed for 2017. The new carrier is P&A Group.

You should have received your new card by now. If you still have money for 2016 in your flexible spending account with Connect Your Care, you can use the Connect Your Care card until March 15, 2017.

Christine Hottel, Office of Staff Relations, will be conducting training on the University’s Parental Leave Policy.

Smoke-Free Campus The USM Board of Regents approved VI 8.10 “Policy on Smoking at USM Institutions” on June 22, 2012 and required that each constituent institution develop implementation procedures by June 30, 2013. On July 1, 2013 University of Maryland became a smoke-free institution, prohibiting smoking in any institution building, grounds, or property. This includes academic buildings, residence halls, administrative building, other enclosed facilities, vehicles, walkways, parking lots, and recreational and athletic areas.

There are four designated smoking areas on campus.

Additionally, there is no prohibition from smoking in personal vehicles.

The policy also offers smoking cessation assistance for students, faculty, and staff through the University Health Center.

Make this the year you quit smoking!

The training provides prospective parents and/or parents preparing for the birth or adoption of a child an overview of the Parental Leave Policy. Topics covered include when and how to apply for parental leave, eligibility requirements, paid leave assurance, and a review of other University policies associated with the Parental Leave benefit.

Long Term Disability & Life Insurance Open Enrollment February 1, 2017 – March 1, 2017.

The effective date for the changes will be 04/01/2017.

Features:  The Long-Term Disability monthly benefit increased from $8,000 to $10,000 for all existing and newly eligible employees, who financially qualify (60% of monthly earnings to a new benefit maximum of $10,000 per month).  The Life Insurance guarantee issue limits increased from $50,000 to $100,000 for all existing and newly eligible employees. If you currently have UNUM’s Life insurance, you can add an additional $50,000 without Evidence of Insurability (Spousal guarantee issue limits increase from $20,000 to $50,000.)  10% decrease in both the long-Term Disability and Life Insurance premium rate.
