UHR|Connect October 2017 Vol. 3 No. 10 2017 Faculty & Staff Convocation: UHR’s very own Willie Brown

Appreciation is a fundamental human need. Employees respond to appreciation expressed through recognition of their good work because it confirms that their work is valued. When employees and their work are valued, their satisfaction and productivity rises, and they are motivated to maintain and/or improve their good work. Many of our UMD colleagues were recognized for their accomplishments at this year’s Faculty & Staff Convocation.

Don’t lose any leave Employees, now is the time to start planning to use any annual or personal leave you may be in jeopardy of losing. Employees eligible to earn leave may carry over a maximum of 50 days or 400 hours of annual leave into the next calendar year. This maximum will be prorated for part-time employees working 50% or more. Everyone uses all five conflict-handling modes: none of us can be characterized as having a single, rigid style of dealing with conflict. However, some individuals use certain modes better and more often than others. Thereby, relying upon particular modes more heavily, whether because of temperament or practice.

Which one do you use? When it Works

When it Doesn’t

Collaborating: The Owl

Collaborating: The Owl

• Complex issues that need creative solutions. • Everyone understands the common goal and is willing to work to achieve it. • When the situation is too important for a simple trade-off.

• When trust is low. • Can be extremely time consuming. • Can take a lot of effort keeping everyone focused on the same goal.

Compromising: The Fox

Compromising: The Fox

• When the cost of conflict is higher than the cost of losing ground. • Where both sides are of equal strength and have equally important goals. • When there is a deadline looming.

• May only be a temporary solution. • Neither side is totally satisfied. • May be seen as taking the easy way out.

Competing: The Shark

Competing: The Shark

• Urgent decision needs to be made. • With an unpopular but needed decision. • In response to someone who is trying to exploit a situation for their own gain.

• Increased conflict with other “sharks.” • May injure current and future relationships. • May result in you being seen as a tyrant, which could affect later negotiations.

Accommodating: The Teddy Bear

Accommodating: The Teddy Bear

• Issue matters more to the other person. • Peace is a more favorable outcome vs. winning. • When you may need to ask for a favor later for something you see as more important.

• You may never get that favor you ask. • Peace may cost you position. • People may see you as unreliable when it comes to standing up for them.

Avoiding: The Turtle

Avoiding: The Turtle

• With a trivial issue, or one you won’t win. • In an emotionally charged situation and space is needed. • When someone else has a better handle on the situation.

• It does not address the problem. • Hope is not a strategy. • Can lead to an image of weakness or viewed as someone who does not care.
