Everything you need to know about avocados Avocados are the shining stars of the produce section. The fruits pear-shaped shell covers the delicious, creamy green flesh and giant brown pit. They’re also the most important ingredient to Americas favorite dip, guacamole. Avocados are turning up in salads, wraps, and even smoothies. There are many things about the famous green berry that you may not know of. According to ‘Megan Ware RDN LD’, “ Avocados are a great source of vitamins C, E, K, and B-6, as well as riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, and potassium. They also provide lutein, beta-carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids.” Avocados have nearly 20 vitamins and minerals such as potassium, which is good for helping to control your blood pressure. They also contain lutien, which is good for your eyes, and foltate, which is good for repairing cells and during pregnancy. They are full of nutrients and they’re high in fiber. Many people’s avocados go bad and rot because they don’t know how to prepare them quite right. To prepare an avocado, the correct way you need to store them at room temperature, keeping in mind that they can take 4 to 5 days to ripen. To speed up the ripening process, put them in a paper bag along with an apple or banana. When the outside skins are black or dark purple and yield to gentle pressure, they’re ready to eat or refrigerate. Wash them before cutting so dirt and bacteria aren’t transferred from the knife onto the pulp. While guacamole is arguably the most popular way to eat avocado, you can also puree and toss with pasta, substitute for butter or oil in your favorite baked good recipes or spread or slice onto sandwiches. When ordering at a restaurant, remember that not all avocado dishes are created equal. Some items -- like avocado fries and avocado egg rolls, are coated in batter and fried, making them much higher in both calories and fat. One problem some people may have to watch out for is the latex in an avocado. Before adding avocado to your diet, you may want to make sure you don’t have a latex allergy, so you should check up with your doctor just in case. People who do have a serious latex allergy may experience symptoms after consuming an avocado. They may experience hives, a swollen face, breathing trouble, chest pain, low blood pressure, and dizziness or fainting.
