Mental GETTING HELP.- An

Interview with Lacy Love Protest or Publicity?

A Highschool’s Protest turned Photo-Op

MAY 2018

Dear Reader, My journey throughout the making of this magazine was more of a selfgrowth than an editing process. Originally, this magazine was going to be what I thought a mental health editorial looked like: medication adverts, black & white photos, and articles leaning so far left it would fall into the Pacific Ocean. This is when I realized it -- I wasn’t making a magazine for the depressed, I was making a magazine for the youth. Our very own Gen Z. No longer was I using a photo of a depressed person while editing MENTAL. Costner_baseball_2/1/18_927.JPGCostner_baseball_2/1/18_859.JPGCostner_baseball_2/1/18_897.JPG I was now picturing the Sandy Hook high schoolers protesting Gun laws, Costner_baseball_2/1/18_898.JPG the millions of Dreamers fighting for human rights, and generations of Costner_baseball_2/1/18_899.JPG Costner_baseball_2/1/18_900.JPG Native Americans protecting their land from outsiders who intend on Costner_baseball_2/1/18_901.JPG destroying it. This magazine no longer fits in that box, it has instead outCostner_baseball_2/1/18_902.JPG grown it. GETTING HELP

by Kimma Juaire

Depression, which is the persistence of sadness, anxiety, or an "empty" feeling, has taken over

today's generation.

You can say that we're just a bunch of whiny, spoiled millennials that are just sad because we have to pay bills, et cetera. Or maybe it's because the earth is getting warmer, the economy is in shambles, and our president ignores us, but that's just a suggestion. Lacy Love, a Freshman at University High School, has played her cards with Depression and from what I've heard, her hand is still in the deck. "When I have a bunch of assignments, I feel the world closing in on me. Coming to school is a hassle too, just because I don’t like anyone there and it makes me want to dig a hole in the ground and hide," Love says, her hands nervously twitching in her lap, her hands frequently brushing away a lock of dirty blonde hair that fell in her face. Depression can worsen your anxiety, blowing things that might seem tolerable to others way out of proportion to those with depression or anxiety. "Depression, usually, is a neutral state. It's like your walking around with a raincloud over your head. It gets bad when all your bad thoughts throughout the day become a collection, and it's all happening at once. My face gets hot, my throat contracts, and then the tears start to fall," Love says. Being depressed doesn't just mean crying all the time, and having depression isn't just about feeling sadness. It's more complicated than that. Scientists have found chemical in-balances in the brain of mentally ill people. Circuits in the brain that control feelings and mood swings work less efficiently for those with clinical depression. Even though you can't control your brain structure, you can choose to get help and see a doctor. "I've had depression for a long time and I refused to get help mostly because I wanted to fix it personally. I didn’t want to take a pill to stop it, but I think a lot of people who don’t want to get help don’t realize that sometimes depression isn't just emotional, it's clinical." Love assures. Getting better doesn’t always mean drinking detox teas and meditating, it sometimes means getting help. Going to a doctor. Getting a prescription. "People don't deem depression as a mental illness because it's not like bipolar disorder or something else like that, but it's the same thing. You can't control it. Accepting it and telling someone who will help you is the best thing you can do.”
