Two Words: Food Frenzy Summer Fun Days by Marielle Connors Summer activities are hard to think up sometimes, summer activities are challenging to pull off sometimes, but always summer activities are fun, inspiring, and lively. That’s how we dream to look back on our summers, so those are the memories we will create. If you’re looking for messy, exhausting, group-based fun, then I have two words for you: food frenzy. A food-and-dessert-based compilation of games might just be the perfect way to spend one of your Wednesday nights. “Well it was really cool because the teenagers had a place to hang and what better place to be than searching for marbles in a giant sundae,” 7th grader, Jonathan Connors said when describing just one of the games in the food frenzy night.
A large crinkly tarp served just perfectly as the “bowl” for our slippery sundae. “I was going out on the platform about to search for marbles and I slipped on a cherry,” Connors said – with extreme enthusiasm. “It was a tarp covered in sundae ice cream and fudge – FUUUDGGE” Amidst obstacle courses and sticky competitions, food frenzy night was anything but what you would call traditional.

“I expected just a full out food fight,” 6th grader, Idan Rodriguez. “We had to crawl through a tunnel of raw spaghetti and meatballs and we got spaghetti and meatballs in places where people wouldn’t want to get spaghetti and meatballs”. Squiggly tunnels, kiddy pools, and precariously placed beams and hoola hoops slathered in spaghetti sauce can be an interesting experience for anyone... but for Connors, it was especially weird. “I was about the ninth person to go and... I’m gonna be honest... I ate some of it... and it tasted like armpit,” Connors said through fits of uncontainable laughter, very aware that the spaghetti was not meant to be eaten. Now, slight change, imagine large-scale fruit ninja. This is what ensued just around the corner. “One of my favorite parts was when a bunch of people surrounded this one person and we all threw fruit and the person in the middle would have to take the bat and try to hit them,” Rodriguez said. Take it from someone who knows... the dance you do while avoiding flying fruit is quite a sight. “Throwing watermelon chunks at the group leader was really funny,” 9th grader, Serena Wolfe said. The ending of the night was nothing short of a continuation of the adventure. After being completely hosed off, sopping wet (but hopefully a lot less oatmeal and raw egg all over you), Rodriguez still has a funny memory. “I was so messy I had to wear trash bags in the car because my mom didn’t want me to stain her new seats,” Rodriguez said and reminded everybody. “Bring an extra pair of clothes [and] close your mouth, you don’t want raw egg in your mouth”.
