STATEWIDE FOOTPRINT
We work to expand our reach across the state, especially in rural communities that may have limited access to health care and exposure to STEM. We strive to diminish the shortage of health care providers in rural Iowa by showcasing many great academic and career opportunities within Iowa.

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY “UI Health Care STEM Education programs provide Iowa’s K-12 students with a unique opportunity to see firsthand how science, technology, engineering, and math concepts are connected to real-world situations and careers in health care. These programs are ultimately geared toward building the STEM pipeline in Iowa, promoting health literacy, expanding classroom curriculum to better prepare students for a future in STEM, addressing the physician shortage, and keeping Iowa a leader in STEM.”-Emily Strattan, STEM and Student Engagement Specialist at University of Iowa Health Care.

CHALLENGES IN STEM
Stepping up to the Challenge Iowa STEM occupations, which comprise 17% of all Iowa jobs, are expected to grow 1.2% annually from 2014 to 2024 compared to 0.9% annual growth across all occupations. –Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council

CAREER DEMAND Careers in STEM are among the largest and fastest growing of all industries in the world. With more students attending colleges and universities, UI Health Care STEM Education works to instill an interest in STEM as it relates to medicine. These programs allow students to take what they are learning in the classroom and apply it to real world scenarios through simulations and interactive experiences where they take the reins with guidance and support provided from UI faculty, staff, and trainees. K-12 students are fueled with excitement and curiosity which keeps them motivated to excel in the classroom and better prepares them for a future in STEM. Having more qualified individuals to fill these STEM positions has the potential to boost the economy and keep Iowa a leader in STEM.

A high school female learns about anatomy by observing a plastinated human heart.
STEM GOES RED UI Health Care STEM Education was a key partner in the American Heart Association’s inaugural Cedar Rapids area STEM Goes Red event. This event was targeted to 9th grade females to get them thinking about heart health and pursuing STEM careers. The idea for this event came from the need to improve heart health in women and encourage more females to enter the field.
Declining interest
Among all students statewide the proportion of females by grade interested in a STEM career declines steadily from grade 3 to grade 11. –Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council
GIRLS GO STEM: To address the disparity of women in STEM, UI Health Care STEM Education has been hosting Girls Go STEM since 2012. This program targets young girls at a time when they are interested in exploring careers, and while there is time to choose coursework to help them prepare for a career in STEM.

“NATIONALLY, the good news is that more and more students are entering higher education with plans to major in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. The bad news is completion rates in these majors lags far behind graduation rates of other fields, especially if the student is black, Latino or Native American (HERI, 2010). This is an unsustainable and unacceptable condition.” –Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council
UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS face challenges
day-in and day-out. When it comes to STEM, some of these challenges include a lack of representation in the field, limited exposure, and financial barriers. UI Health Care STEM Education is approaching this inequity by reaching a wide range of students that are underrepresented in STEM, including women, racial minorities, rural students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. We are working to diminish the disparities among these students by providing them with engaging educational experiences to ignite their interest in STEM and showing them that a career in STEM is a possibility.

STEM PARTNERS
University of Iowa Health Care STEM Education partners with over 370 faculty and staff, trainees, and others at the University of Iowa to provide countless educational hours to Iowa’s K-12 students. Internal partners offer students the ability to learn about various careers in health care through interactive programming, tours of facilities, classroom visits, simulations, STEM activities, and case studies. None of this would be possible without the generosity from our internal partners.

KEY PARTNER One of UI Health Care STEM Education’s largest partners is Kirkwood Community College’s Workplace Learning Connection. In FY 2019 we set up more than 20 exploratory visit days for middle and high school students with a wide range of careers interests. Some of the career exploration Interest days we currently host include: ɠ Junior Medical School ɠ Pathology ɠ Radiology ɠ Allied Health ɠ Genetics ɠ Nursing ɠ Physician Assistant ɠ Child Development ɠ Research Scientist Workplace Learning Connection fields hundreds of student and educator requests for career exploration in health care and STEM-related careers. University of Iowa Health Care STEM Education answers this demand for work-based learning through unmatched support for large scale group job shadows, worksite tours and a myriad of regional career events. These experiences influence students realization of what their future careers can look like in eastern Iowa. UI Health Care is an essential and valued partner in our work to help guide those experiences.” –Laurie Worden, Director of Workplace

A Carver College of Medicine physician assistant student helps an elementary student identify broken bones while looking at x-rays.
Iowa was recently ranked the 5th lowest state for the number of physicians per 100,000 patients according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. With the growing need for physicians and health care providers, we want our STEM experiences to inspire students to return to the University of Iowa for their future education and stay in Iowa to practice their chosen career. Generally, Iowa residents make up about two-thirds of each medical student class at the UI Carver College of Medicine. Of the 2019 medical degree program graduates, 50 stayed in Iowa for residency training, of which 80% were Iowa residents. During our STEM experiences, we try to paint a picture for students to see themselves in these careers, help them understand the path to follow to get there, and expose them to the ample opportunity right here in Iowa.
Every year my students take away experiences and information that helps prepare them for their future! The presenters are real people doing real work. They have a passion that the students connect with. –Educator, Nevada Middle School

NEXT GENERATION
The current K-12 students are the next generation of health care providers and researchers in Iowa and around the globe. UI Health Care STEM Education wants to keep health care and research careers in the forefront of these students’ minds. With the declined interest in STEM happening around middle school, we are tasked with keeping STEM interesting and engaging for students of all ages.
KIDS GO STEM
UI Health Care STEM Education initiated a new program, Kids Go STEM, in FY 2019. Kids Go STEM is modeled after our signature Girls Go STEM program, but open to any 6th-8th grade student. During the event, parents learned about preparing their child for a future in STEM, as well as adolescent health topics such as vaping and changing bodies. Meanwhile, students attended four interactive breakout sessions of their choice relating to health care, the sciences, and health literacy.

STUDENTS AT THE CARVER COLLEGE OF MEDICINE have the opportunity to share about their path to their medical program and spread interest in STEM all across the state of Iowa in our Carver College of Medicine Hawkeye Hometown program. UI Health Care STEM Education provides Carver College of Medicine students with the supplies necessary to lead interactive, hands-on activities with students at their former grade school. This program allows us to increase our statewide reach to places we might not otherwise have the resources to engage.

ALIGNMENT WITH NATIONAL STEM POLICY Build Strong Foundations for STEM Literacy –Whether it be as simple as hand hygiene or as complex as the physics behind hyperbaric medicine, all STEM education programs at UI Health Care focus on increasing STEM interest and health literacy. It is important to us that students leave their experience with a better understanding of how components of STEM are connected to our everyday lives. Increase Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion – UI Health Care recognizes that greater diversity equals greater outcomes, and that diversity is key to long-term economic growth. One of our main priorities is to increase our reach to underrepresented minorities (URM) in STEM. This includes women, racial minorities, rural students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.
