GREEN IN CITY AND VILLAGE is an absolute necessity

creation and maintenance. As a result of urbanisation, the pressure on ‘green’ in the western world has increased enormously in the past three decades. ‘Red’, which are homes and offices, prevailed. Green became an afterthought, even

though scientific research in the eighties proved that green contributed greatly to the wellbeing of people who live and/ or work in urban areas. In private gardens, green also had to make way for maintenance free options. But things seem to be changing now.

Roel van Dijk is director of the Stichting

making the living environment greener. Steenbreek will be on four themes:

biodiversity, climate adaption, social

cohesion, and health. “These are four

important themes that cannot be seen separately from each other,” says Van Dijk. Themes that are really important

for our society and therefore deserve an

integrated approach.” Van Dijk: “We want to replace unnecessary paved surfaces in gardens and public space by green. Municipalities can decide on their own

how they want to do that: with citizens, organisations, and companies.” Green measures can be: creating example

gardens, building insect hotels, creating green facades, and making the entire

street greener, along with everyone living in the neighbourhood. But it also focuses on more green around industrial sites, healthcare sites, and school grounds.

Remove the tile, put in a plant

The actions of Stichting Steenbreek were basically focussed on removing tiles

and planting plants? “Yes,” says Van Dijk, “and that is still the case. It is important to make people aware of the fact that

unnecessary pavement might seem very

practical, being called maintenance free, but it will eventually lead to problems, especially now, with extreme weather

and climate change. If you replace tiles by green, you will help the soil absorb

rainwater, to keep the groundwater at a sufficient level, and to prevent the

sewage system from overload. It will

also prevent stones from storing heat. Square around the Van Gogh church. Photo Freson

Initiatives in the neighbourhood

Initiatives in the neighbourhood are very

important when it comes to greening and creating a healthy living environment. That is why Stichting Steenbreek now hosts an annual competition, where

participants are challenged to search for innovative initiatives related to the improvement of biodiversity, social

cohesion, and that contribute to climate adaption in a positive way. These

initiatives might serve as examples to others.

City in the park

A remarkable initiative in the region is

Breda’s intention to make the city the first European city to be situated in a green park. The municipality wants to put

Why are trees so important? 1. Trees filter CO2 from the air and

convert these molecules into building blocks to support their own growth.

CO2 is stored in wood, leafs and the soil, often for centuries.

2. Trees catch and process many toxic

substances in the air, such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.

3. Trees keep us cool. By creating a

canopy to catch the sunlight, forests also create important oases of

shadows on the ground. Trees also

reduce the heat island effect of a city and regulate regional temperatures.

4. Roots of trees are important partners

during heavy downpours, especially in low-lying areas, such as floodplains. They work like a sponge and help the soil to absorb more during a downpour.

5. The root system keeps sand and mud in its place. It strengthens the entire

foundation of the ecosystem against erosion by wind or water.

6. Trees can either store the toxic

substances or degrade them, and make them less harmful.

7. Sounds fade in forests, which makes trees a popular natural sound wall.

The rustling leafs and other sounds of the forest dim a lot. A few well-positioned trees can limit sounds with 5 to

10 dB, or approximately 50% of what is audible to human beings.

8. Trees stop the wind. Groups of trees can function as a windshield, as a buffer to wind sensitive crops.

9. Trees provide fruits, nuts, seeds, and

juices, and a lot of stuff on the ground, from edible mushrooms, berries, and beetles to many other animals.

10. What would we be without wood and

resin? We have used these renewable sources for a long time, to create

anything from paper and furniture to houses and clothing.

And…

trees and plants are also just very beautiful!

lead in making things greener. We can

do this ourselves in our own gardens. The growers in North Brabant and Flanders

offer a very diverse assortment, so one

can just choose anything that is suitable to their specific garden or terrain. And

one shouldn’t forget about the balcony, the patio, and the tiled garden. A lot of

tiny surfaces can lead to a lot of green.”

Hermans does emphasize that whatever you’re planting: it’s living material, and

needs maintenance. How much, depends on the selection of the plant. “And there is a lot of talk about native and non-native plants, but take it from me: any plant is fine, as long as it isn’t rampant or invasive.” Go green!

Zundert is going green

The municipality of Zundert is very serious about ambitions related to the design of public space. These ambitions also

include water management and climate adaption and going green. Patrick Kok,

alderman of the municipality of Zundert, responsible for spatial planning, has

tasked with ‘green over grey’ and Disconnecting rainwater, so that it doesn’t just move through the

“Good water management is essential in our municipality, with having such a

large tree nursery industry. That is why we go for a solid water system, to maintain and control our biodiversity. We started a pilot project, Vitaal Buitengebied, in

cooperation with the province and water board. During this pilot, we will look at

challenges in our rural areas, along with other parties. How can we continue to offer chances to entrepreneurs? How

THE TREE NURSERY industry in Zundert

Anyone who dives into the tree nursery industry in Zundert, cannot ignore the fact that

prior to the rise of the tree nursery industry, the region mainly consisted of poor farmers. The forests in the surrounding area were used for wood, the heathland for sheep, and

the cultural landscape was used for vegetables and fruit. The yards around farms were focused on usefulness. No ornamental gardens, but plots with hawthorn or blackthorn

used as livestock fences. This was only different for the nobility, where gardens were still regarded as status symbol.

Economically, things weren’t looking that

reduction as a priority. In 1847, a lot at the

Minoore (area) in Wernhout is purchased for an unemployment relief project. It

is a 29-hectare plot of heath, meant to reclaim and afforest. Five years later, another 17 hectares is purchased.

In 1855, that resulted in a harvest of 15

hectolitres of pinecones and 22 pounds

of seeds. This proved to be a very fruitful start of commercial arboriculture!

In 1860, the Minoore employed five people fulltime, at a day’s wage of 50 cents. The

Poor Relief Committee, which was tasked with taking care of the poor, usually

within the parish, expanded her activities

to other grounds, such as the meadow of the Hof, the meadow at Stuivezand, the

‘Poor man’s meadows’ in the Gooren, and the meadow in the Boontuinen.

At that time, the grounds near the large

brook were also very suitable for the tree nursery industry. It was often emptied,

and the mud and clay was spread out

over adjacent grounds, to improve the soil. In 1863, guano (imported manure

products from birds) was used for the

mainly used in mining; it squeaks when

it moves, which meant that any collapse of the mine would make itself known

beforehand. Plant material that was not

suitable for breeding was used as wood for stoves.

In 1866, another purchase at the Minoore was done. That was also the start of

trade between the Poor Relief Committee and the rapidly increasing number of nurseries. In the following years, the area prospered, and having a Poor

Relief Committee didn’t really seem to be necessary. To improve cultivation,

growers felt the need to start using crop protection products. In 1886, 24 growers requested the required phylloxera declaration.

During the tenure of mayor Van

Beckhoven, arboriculture in the area steadily developed. The reports that the Queen’s Commissioner made in

the period of 1896 - 1925 show that the respect for this upcoming economy

knowledge gained was shared widely.

The cross-pollination between nurseries, strawberry farming and fruit production

led to new insights and opportunities for all those involved. This helped Zundert

develop into a rich area. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Poor Relief

Committee concluded that it completed its mission and withdrew itself from the nursery.

in the following years that number

and well-trained staff for the nurseries. At the end of the 60s, education had to be

‘improved’, and the training fell under the ‘Mammoetwet’, an educational-reform legislation. That proved to be a historic

error and ultimately led to the death of

tree nursery education in Zundert in 1981.

continued. As of 1920, fertilizer started

acreage and widened the assortment. At that time, Zundert was home to multiple renowned nurseries that were also

often involved in trade. In those years, names as De Pijnboom, Wilhelmina,

Lobarts, Dictus, and Doomen (with one and two o’s), and others, appear to be

synonymous for the entrepreneurial spirit of Zundert.

It was of course important to maintain

this economic development. That is why

in 1949, on the initiative of mayor Manders and others, the ‘Fruitvakschool’ (a

vocational school for fruit cultivation) was

Fortunately, arboriculture didn’t suffer the since 1955. The cultivation was adjusted to the demand of plants for modern forests. Growing ‘urban green’ and

responsible construction of landscapes and recreational areas increased. The activities on the nursery were

modernised: tractors, planting machines, grippers, millers, and harvesters came

into play. After that, the narrow-gauge tractors, height-adjustable platforms, and a noticeable refinement of

techniques for the application of

chemical weed control followed. And

when it came to logistics, a lot changed

carts and trams to transport using trucks, palletisers entered the scene, quickly followed by supplying plants on CC

trolleys with multiple layers. For those not familiar with these carts; these are the

rambling carts that do have a standard size, but make a lot of noise and always seem to have a broken wheel.

Growers also paid special attention

to making economical use of the soil.

Mechanisation, drainage and irrigation, advanced sampling and fertilisation

created a more accessible soil and a

higher yield per hectare. At the end of

the sixties, the meandering river of Aa of

Weerijs was practically straightened. That resulted in a year-round accessibility of the grounds surrounding the banks. The expansion of the trade and

cultivation led to more growers taking the leap towards entrepreneurship in

the seventies. More billboards with new names appeared next to the plots, and the competition forced all nurseries to work at a higher level.

The nursery region is strongly rooted in a healthy soil, and is ready for the future. The nursery industry in North Brabant and the Noorderkempen

some experience with the disc planting

machines from Basrijs. “I wanted to take a new step towards precision farming. I didn’t want to drill any holes, but I did want to use mitre planting.”

The principle of the new planting

machine has remained the same: you’re seated on the back and put the planting material in a large spinning disc. It will

be moved to a trench, and the soil will be closed off again. Previously, it made use

of hydraulic control. “The discs now have electronic controls,” says Bastiaansen. “That works better for GPS.”

The new practical research at Lodders will make use of a combination of drip

Tijmen Dekkers, from Deltae Innovation Solutions in Zundert. “We want to work

towards a self-sufficient watermanagement system,” says Raats. “This can

work in theory, but it also has to work in practice.”

Lodders, Raats, and Dekkers are not on their own. A number of other partners

are involved in the research: water board

and research company GroeiBalans,

municipality of Zundert, development

agency Rewin and Landbouw Innovatie

Noord-Brabant. “It’s great to see that the water board, the municipality, and the province are also participating,” says

Dekkers. “As soon as we get the results

from the research, and we know how the system actually works, we will be able to copy it to other nurseries very fast.”

The research will start in the spring,

within the Pilot Vital Rural Area, in the

basin of the Aa of Weerijs. The plot will be prepared for the project. It does

soil. Moisture sensors will be located in

Boomkwekerij De Minoor is the first in

the Zundert area to use a weeding robot

named Oz. More robots, which are made by Naïo in France, might follow suit. “We

are working on multiple proposals,” says Thijs van de Ven, who works at importer Abemec. “Especially in mandrel growth. The Oz is able to maneuver through all

those young trees. We hope to move in the direction of other crops.”

Naïo also builds a robot for growing on

beds, such as forestry and shrubbery, but Van de Ven thinks that this Dino is too

low to be able to move over for example beeches. “We did sell a Dino, to onion

growers.” In 2021, Naïno will start the serial production of a third robot, named Ted, which will be able to move over higher plants. That will be some sort of portal tractor.

as weeding. It is the first E-Trike for the

this worm hotel, the Diftar system, as well, and to place worm hotels at schools.

That way, children will be educated in

an interesting way. Using organic waste in the best possible way, preferably

near home, has a lot of advantages. The organic substance (compost)

resulting from the waste can be used for a great soil. Adding such a layer

can also create a sponge like effect, a

water buffer. This system can be applied both in growers and in regular gardens.

FOCUS ON ‘THE FORGOTTEN GARDEN SEASON’

Great news! Green is doing very well! And that has everything to do with the

enormous challenges of this time, climate change, and the pandemic. During the lockdown that started mid March 2020, people had to stay at home, and their lives continued within their own four walls. Anyone having a garden or

balcony was really lucky, and that resulted in a run on plants. Of course, that is

great news for all types of nurseries. Focused promotion will help further increase the interest.

Practical applications are very inspiring

practical applications have an inspiring effect. Since 2019, Gouda for example has 12 volunteers who act as Garden

Ambassadors. They really dislike paved gardens, and even just one enthusiast

can inspire others to put plants in their (front) garden or on their facade. Due

to the corona measures, gardens and balconies became increasingly more important, and people started to buy more plants.

Tuinbranche Nederland was able to

record large increases when it came to the sales of ‘living green’. Week 41 showed a huge increase of +31.5%

compared to 2019. People seemed to go mainly for perennials, such as seasonal product Skimmia. All in all, this is a

great development, which should be

maintained. Focused action, such as the

campaign launched in October 2020, can help with that. This campaign was called: ‘The forgotten garden season’. People

were encouraged to work with ‘green’ at an unusual time - starting in October.

The soft and wet winters nowadays make that possible. Green is a frontrunner, a lasting trend besides sustainable and local.

AT THE KITCHEN TABLE WITH…

PHoto: Luuk Roozeboom

“IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE INDUSTRY GETS THE TIME TO SWITCH” Entrepreneurs are

usually working on their business day and night. But what drives them?

And what are the things that keep them up at

night? In this segment of ‘Kitchen table

interviews’, we talk to

them and find out what special stories they have to share. This week:

Erik Bastiaensen

the target group and core of the activities doesn’t really change.”

Do I understand correctly that the members also own the cooperative? “Yes, you can see it like that. In theory. If

a member would leave, the cooperative would still exist. Every member is one

vote. The board is a delegation of the

members, and the board decides what happens. As director, I am responsible

for all operational matters and I am held accountable by the board.”

Who sets the course for the company; do you bring it to the board, or does it work the other way around? “It’s usually a combination. The board

“Well, I did go to school, haha. To the

the agricultural university in Wageningen. I did focus on cattle breeding. When I graduated, I started working in my

dad’s company. However, there was not enough work for me there, so I started looking for something else. Through friends of my parents I ended up at

CLTV. I started out as representative for livestock farming.”

You started out as a representative and now you’re the director. What happened in-between? “I started out at CLTV in 1993. At that time, it was a different company. It

employed 12-13 people. Jos Goossens,

my predecessor, would retire a few years later. That meant that I had to decide

whether or not I wanted to continue the business at home, or if I would make

opportunity to succeed Jos. It was kind

behind ‘his’ desk for the first time. I wasn’t even thirty at that time.”

You’ve grown from a relatively small organisation to a medium-sized organisation. Managing 50 people seems to be a tough task. How do you do that?

“Well, I don’t like the sound of ‘managing’. As if I tell everyone what to do every

morning. That is certainly not the case. The organisation is very flat, but within CLTV, we do have a few managers.

That’s one of the best features of a larger company. If you start to grow, more

people are sharing responsibilities with you, and you can complement each other.”

You’ve been the host of trade fair GrootroenPlus, and last year - its studio. What is your relationship with GrootGroenPlus? “That’s a funny thing. I’m actually

member of the board of the trade fair -

mainly because it’s very practical. We’ve been participating in GrootGroenPlus for years. When the trade fair had to move from Klein Zundert to another location, they asked if our terrain might be a

suitable solution. To be honest; I didn’t really like that idea at the time. That is why they moved to Boot en Dart for a

few years. Later on, they asked again,

23

and at that time, it was a good match. We were just about to start building a

new strawberry warehouse. With a little inching and pinching, we managed to

make space for GrootGroenPlus. I think it is very important that something like

this is organised for the industry. It allows you to do something for the industry,

while getting some additional exposure yourself as well. It shows to the region that you are willing to take on some

social responsibility. That’s something we want to project as CLTV.”

Looking at the future, what will be the main priorities?

some changes - we see that transport is

so that it doesn’t pose limitations to other how to do that in the future. We’ll think

about that in the course of 2021. We do

face some challenges moving forward.”

The environment is becoming increasingly more important. The demand for green is increasing. However, the agricultural industry also has to follow more rules and regulations. How do you feel about these developments? “Well, I have to say that I find it very interesting. I’ve noticed that a lot is

happening in for example the nursery and strawberry industries. I’ve seen

that companies have intensified and

improved their cooperation. If a grower is innovating, he will share those

innovations with others. No one is keeping it to himself. Most growers do recognise that we have to be mindful about

using water, fertiliser, etc. The future

requires another working method. Many

additional steps are required, but I do see developments that will be implemented

on a large scale. However, it is important that the industry gets the opportunity to make the shift.”

And finally, with whom would you like to sit down? “I’ve been thinking about that, since I

knew that questions was coming. Mark

Rutte would be the most obvious choice,

but he’s so very busy already, so I think I’ll just let him enjoy his spare time. That is

why I chose Sjaak van der Tak. He is the

new chairman of LTO Nederland. He is an

advocate for the agricultural industry. I’m very curious about his plan for the next few years, especially since there are a
