CHECK OUT: WRITING A HOLIDAY NOTE Orientation Your friends went on holiday and posted their holiday pictures on Instagram. You were stuck at camp and didn’t do all the adventurous things your friends did. That’s okay, because you also did some things, so you are sending them a short note telling them all about your own holiday!

Preparation 1

Look at your Instagram-feed and make a note of what your friends did.

2

Make sure you revise the irregular verbs before you start.

Action 3

Write 1 sentence for each of their photos so you are fully prepared to send them your note. Use the prompts in your sentences.

Every morning, I start my day with the same routine: I get up and go to the bathroom, brush my teeth, and then pick out an outfit for the day. Picking up my contacts, I head back to my mirror, earbuds in and blasting loud, and put the contacts in place, right eye first and followed by the left. I pluck my eyebrows to perfection, and then put on my eyeliner and mascara, and go to my room to pack my bag for the day. Afterward, I head to the kitchen to eat breakfast, put on my shoes, and head out the door, earbuds still in. This is the way it’s always been, and I’m afraid that this is all there’ll ever be. Just once, I want to head to my locker in the morning, reaching for a notebook, and catch someone glancing at me. Just once, I want a guy I’ve never talked to before to approach me, ask me my name, show some interest. Maybe he could walk me to class, if that’s not asking for too much. Does it even matter what ‘type’ of guy he is? No, it doesn’t! I couldn’t care less if he was a tall jock with blue eyes and tanned skin, built and strong, or a quiet, poetic type with deep brown eyes and a crooked smile you only get to see if you get close enough, or catch him reading his favourite book. Maybe he’s a gamer, who wears sweatpants to school every day, and mountain bikes in his spare time, or he could even be a suit-loving, family guy who would rather spend some quiet time at home rather than go out and get drunk on a weekend night. It doesn’t even matter. It doesn’t matter at all. I just want someone to break my cycle - to interrupt this non-stop repetition. I’m tired of hearing the same songs every day - I’m tired of laughing at the same jokes, sitting in the same spot for lunch every afternoon, waking up to the same routine, that same face staring back at me as I put my contacts in in the morning. I just want someone to come into my life and change it - is that too much to ask?

THIS IS ME!

True

Every Day (David Levithan) Every day a different body. Every day a different life. Every day in love with the same girl. There’s never any warning about where it will be or who it will be. A has made peace with that, even established guidelines by which to live: Never get too attached. Avoid being noticed. Do not interfere. It’s all fine until the morning that A wakes up in the body of Justin and meets Justin’s girlfriend, Rhiannon. From that moment, the rules by which A has been living no longer apply. Because finally A has found someone A wants to be with - day in, day out, day after day. Source: www.goodreads.com

Immediately I have to figure out who I (2 to be). It's not just the body – opening my eyes and discovering whether the skin on my arm is light or dark, whether my hair is long or short, whether I'm fat or thin, boy or girl, scarred or smooth. The body is the easiest thing to adjust to, if you're used to waking up in a new one each morning. It's the life, the context of the body, that can be hard to grasp. Every day I am someone else. I am myself – I know I am myself – but I am also someone else. It has always been like this. The information (3 to be) there. I wake up, open my eyes, understand that it is a new morning, a new place. The biography (4 to kick) in, a welcome gift from the notme part of the mind. Today I am Justin. Somehow, I (5 to know) this – my name is Justin – and at the same time I know that I'm not really Justin, I'm only borrowing his life for a day. I (6 to look) around and know that this is his room. This is his home. The alarm will go off in seven minutes.

I'm never the same person twice, but I've certainly been this type before. Clothes everywhere. Far more video games than books. Sleeps in his boxers. From the taste of his mouth, a smoker. But not so addicted that he (7 to need) one as soon as he (8 to wake) up. "Good morning, Justin," I say. Checking out his voice. Low. The voice in my head is always different. Justin (9 not to take) care of himself. His scalp (10 to itch). His eyes (11 not to want) to open. He hasn't gotten much sleep. Already I know I'm not going to like today. It's hard being in the body of someone you (12 not to like), because you still have to respect it. I've harmed people's lives in the past, and I've found that every time I slip up, it (13 to haunt) me. So I (14 to try) to be careful. From what I can tell, every person I (15 to inhabit) is the same age as me. I (16 not to hop) from being sixteen to being sixty. Right now, it's only sixteen. I (17 not to know) how this works. Or why. I stopped trying to figure it out a long time ago. I'm never going to figure it out, any more than a normal person will figure out his or her own existence. After a while, you have to be at peace with the fact that you simply are. There is no way to know why. You can have theories, but there will never be proof.

I can access facts, not feelings. I (18 to know) this is Justin's room, but I have no idea if he likes it or not. (19 he to want) to kill his parents in the next room? Or would he be lost without his mother coming in to make sure he's awake? It's impossible to tell. It's as if that part of me (20 to replace) the same part of whatever person I'm in. And while I'm glad to be thinking like myself, a hint every now and then of how the other person (21 to think) would be helpful. We all contain mysteries, especially when seen from the inside. The alarm (22 to go) off. I reach for a shirt and some jeans, but something lets me see that it's the same shirt he wore yesterday. I (23 to pick) a different shirt. I take the clothes with me to the bathroom, dress after showering. His parents (24 to be) in the kitchen now. They have no idea that anything is different. Sixteen years is a lot of time to practice. I (25 usually / not to make) mistakes. Not anymore. I (26 to read) his parents easily: Justin (27 not to talk) to them much in the morning, so I (28 not to have to) talk to them. I have grown accustomed to sensing expectation in others, or the lack of it. I shovel down some cereal, (29 to leave) the bowl in the sink without washing it, (30 to grab) Justin's keys and go. Yesterday I was a girl in a town I'd guess to be two hours away. The day before, I was a boy in a town three hours farther than that. I am already forgetting their details. I have to, or else I will never remember who I really am.

A habit is often a response to a certain trigger, which follows a routine and usually ends with a reward. This is also called a habit loop. And because rewards release dopamine, a neurotransmitter that makes our brain first happy and then hooked, we get stuck and can’t let go anymore. Some habits are tricky. Procrastination for example. There is no clear trigger, routine or reward. It just happens. A habit is a fixed way of thinking that leads to automatic behavior. The benefit is we don’t have to rethink again and again what to do. If we can’t leave our phone alone, we can turn off all the notifications. A bad habit can also hurt us or hold us back from progressing. Although, like anything, we can learn and unlearn them. If a problem gets very serious, remove the trigger. Stop buying movie tickets. After a few days of this routine, farmer Joe’s tracks become more visible on his farm. After a few months, the tracks become fixed pathways, not only on his farm, but also inside his brain.

HOW TO study vocabulary and grammar LEARNING FROM CONTEXT Word fields Group words together that belong to the same word field: e.g. outdoor hobbies vs indoor hobbies Make a word list, a word web, an image list ...

Look up unfamiliar words: make sure you understand the definitions of all your new words.

pl aa

Look for examples: do a simple online search and you will see the word in many different examples or contexts.

r

Understand the definition

Mind the prefixes and suffixes e.g.

beauty → act →

em

act →

beautician actor/actress OR react → action

LEARNING FROM REPETITION

jk ex

Write individual words down or use the words in your own sentences.

In

ki

Use flash cards. They are an easy way to review your vocabulary and to separate words into different categories.

Say the word out loud a few times. You can even record yourself or explain the words to other people. Keep the (difficult) words visible: write them on sticky notes and hang them around your room.

LEARNING BY USING MEMORY TRICKS Visual memory? Draw a picture. Auditory memory? Replace the words in a song.

Use mnemonic devices. A mnemonic device is a word/sentence that helps you remember something. e.g. We hear with our ear.

Create associations. e.g. assign a word to each of your friends based on their personalities. fifty

r

- Read through the first question of every check: do you understand what you have to do? - Is the exercise something you have to do individually, with one other student, or with a group of students? - If your exercise is about a text (listening or reading), apply the strategy 'how to listen/watch more effectively': • Do you know what the goal is of every question? • Do you need to read for main ideas, for details, or do you have to make inferences? • Don’t forget that there are different ways to deal with difficult words in a text. - If your exercise is a writing exercise, make sure you have a look at the checklist before you start writing. - Reflect on your exercise when you are done: use the correction key to guide you to the next question, or give your exercise to the teacher for correction.

Hello everyone, my name is Chaima.

In

5

I’m just your average 15-year-old high school student who is obsessed with books! I came across The Hunger Games and have been crazy about it ever since. I’m a major bookworm. I absolutely adore books! I love the way they smell. I love the way they feel. Whatever, I love books. I love reading the stories. I love what you can get out of books, huge fan right here! So, huge thanks to my friend, Tina, who suggested those books to me: thank you, thank you, thank you! If I ever have a daughter, I’ll call her Katniss, I swear! Love books, don’t like homework and all that other stuff schools have you do in your socalled free time ... But still, it is better than gym. That I really detest.

ki

1

My other hobbies are: watching TV (The Hunger Games, remember?), Netflix is great. I love shopping when I’m not reading. Shopping for new books, of course J Oh, and I have recently started taking cooking classes and it’s really fun.

15

Eh… Anything else that you’d like to know about me? I don’t really know what to tell you so I have compiled some random facts about myself to share with you. I’ll start with my family. Well, let’s just say it’s complicated. My mum, Sharon, and my dad, Ben, got married 20 years ago, but they got divorced when I was about 10 years old. So, yeah, it’s been already 5 years now. Was kinda upset at the time, both me and my little brother, Harry, whom I love to bits and also hate at times. What do you expect? He can be a 10-year-old brat sometimes. fifty-three

10

UNIT 1:

THIS IS ME!

53

45

Well, anyway, my mum met this new guy, Tom, a few years ago and he and his kids – he also has two kids, a girl and a boy – moved into our house a couple of months ago. But, so far, so good. We haven’t killed each other. Yet J. Just kidding, Yasmin and Paul, Tom’s kids, are about the same ages as we are, and we all get along fine, so we basically have some kind of new friends living in our house. Oh yeah, my dad also has a new girlfriend, Kelly, but she doesn’t have any kids of her own. What else? Oh yeah, I love-love-love liver and onions. It’s just so good, it’s just like the best meal you could ever have in your life. Seriously. I also have strange love for fried pickles. And the combination of Twix and Flaming Hot Cheetos. Friends and family call me weird, but I just think it is an awesome food combination. Chocolate and chips. You get that gooey, crunchy, spicy, chocolatey yumminess when you mix them up. Anyway, you just have to try it for yourself, if you don’t believe me. So, since I am a huge Hunger Games fan - I just love the excitement - I guess it isn’t surprising that I am a nail biter. Biting my nails and spending too much time online are probably my two worst habits. My mum would say I should try to be on time more often, for school and stuff, but I guess when you’re reading a book until 3 o’clock in the morning, you don’t always get enough sleep.

50

The future … Well that’s a tough cookie. Being a writer sounds amazing, but I haven’t decided yet. A famous chef in a class restaurant sounds like fun too, or maybe teaching? Pff. We’ll see. Time is on my side. Don’t have to decide yet. Maybe I’ll even consider fixing people’s plumbing and drainpipes or cutting men and women’s hair at my own salon, if the main character in my next favourite book sells it to me … who knows? J

Ibtissam and Imad, my eldest brother, already have a son, Anas. He is the first nephew of – hopefully – many! I also have two aunts and one uncle on my father’s side: Ines, Aicha and Adil, and only one aunt at my mother’s side: Assia. Assia’s daughters, my cousins Rita and Safae, are some of my best friends. What happened earlier … A is a traveling spirit who experiences every day in the body of a different teenager. One day, A wakes up in the body of Justin, the neglectful boyfriend of Rhiannon. At school, Rhiannon approaches A as Justin, convincing A to skip school with her. As the day goes on, A falls in love with Rhiannon and Rhiannon feels a rekindled love for Justin, seemingly a more thoughtful and caring person. The next day, however, Rhiannon finds Justin has reverted to his old, careless self and does not remember the previous day. Rhiannon is left confused and hurt. A few days later, when Rhiannon and Justin are attending a party at a friend’s house, Rhiannon meets A again, this time in the body of Nathan.

Strange hobbies 1 Competitive Dog Grooming, China

This, as you might imagine, involves grooming your dog in the most eccentric way you can. While this hobby takes a lot of time, if you’re successful enough, you can win up to $30,000 from a single event.

2 Train Surfing, Germany

This began in Germany in the 80s, and a creatively groomed poodle it’s as dangerous as it sounds. Train surfing involves jumping on the outside of a passenger train and hitching a ride. Over 40 people in Germany died in 2008 alone from attempting to train surf.

Some people collect in-flight sick bags (like this one) as a hobby.

Imagine rolling mud into a ball, before then methodically dusting it with soil, and repeating the process again and again. This hobby was originally a traditional hobby among Japanese children.

7 Soap Carving, Thailand For some, rolling mud into a ball is a beloved pastime.

In Thailand, it’s common to see hand-carved soap flowers sold at night markets. As a hobby, soap-carving is viewed very highly and people often sell their creations as souvenirs.

LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME

I VA N

Ivan came to us as he was abandoned with his mum and brothers and sister. Ivan looks really cool and he is very cute! This short-haired but fluffy boy is energetic and playful. Ivan is ready to explore and enjoy everything new and exciting about life. If Ivan is socialized carefully, he can happily live with children, cats and dogs. Ivan will need someone home most of the time as he has never lived in a home before. Have you got a loving home waiting for him?

jk ex

em

The lovely Coco was found in a park looking very sick. He is a 2-year-old black and white Springer spaniel. Coco is such a friendly boy who loves to be around you and to have cuddles. We cannot wait to find this special boy a brilliant home. He could live with children aged 4+, no cats but possibly a calm female dog. New owners will have to teach him to stay home alone. Like all dogs he will need training classes booked before leaving the centre. If you think you could offer Coco a home, please contact us.

5 Maybe you want a new pet, but are you ready for a new family member? Do the test!

READING

Are you ready for a pet? Do the test! Which game will you play with your pet? A Darts 2.0; my pet would be the board. B Teach my pet to fly. (Not sure if they let you take your pet on the Eiffel Tower.) C Use it for interesting physics or chemistry experiments. D Any game my pet loves to play.

2

Your teacher decides to get your class a class hamster. How will you react? A Put it in a plastic ball and play football with it. B Check how much people are willing to pay for it on eBay. (If nobody wants to buy it, set fire to it and see if it burns.) C Be excited because I want to know how long it can stay alive without food or water. D Enthusiastic! I love taking care of small animals!

3

You finally got a dog, but now you discover the basket you bought is too small. What will you do? A Get a weekend job in a slaughterhouse or a science lab that does tests with living animals to earn money so I can buy a new basket. B Secretly exchange my basket with the basket of someone in my neighbourhood who has a bigger dog. C Saw off my dog’s paws (and if necessary its tail too) so it fits in my basket. D Make a new basket for my pet and knit an extra cushion.

4

Suppose your main responsibility in looking after your pet is giving water. What will you do? A Nothing; my pet can drink from the toilet if it is thirsty. B Force its head in a bucket of water every 2 hours and hold it down until it has finished drinking. C Ask my pet if it is thirsty every 2 hours and if it answers ‘yes, I am’, I will pour some water in its bowl. (I do expect a perfect pronunciation (British accent included), though.) D Check on my pet’s water bowl every hour of the day and make sure it is full at all times!

5

You find a very young kitten or puppy stuck in the bushes behind the garage and it can’t get away. What will you do? A Wait until the leaves fall off so I can rescue it more easily. B Rescue it, then drown it to put it out of its misery. C Burn the bush so the animal struggles to free itself, then call the fire brigade to save the garage. D Do everything I can to rescue the animal (even if it involves getting cut by the branches).

THE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH! You mostly answered A: You are not really into animals, are you, so maybe you shouldn’t get a pet. LOOKING FOR A NEW OWNER

QUINCEY

Harley was taken into RSPCA care when his owner became ill. She could not give Harley the care that he needed. Harley would like a home where he is taken out for lots of walks, and where he gets lots of love and attention. He would definitely benefit from attending training classes and is looking for an adult home. If you would like a bright, intelligent and loyal companion then Harley might be the boy for you.

Quincey’s owner was sadly too unwell to be able to care for him. He is now here in the hope of finding himself a new home. Quincey has previously lived a quiet life with the company of a female dog, however here he doesn’t seem to feel at ease around other dogs. Even though he is quite shy, Quincey is a real softie! He loves going out for walks and then he sometimes jumps up and can be really energetic, so there is life in the old dog yet. This beautiful boy isn’t used to kennels, he has always had a lovely warm home before, so he doesn’t really understand what’s going on.
