Welcome to the latest edition of Eindless Magazine. Once again, we take you on an exciting journey through the diverse world of the Brainport region. As a versatile community of some 800,000 residents, shaped and filled by local and international influences, our region is a bustling melting pot of business, culture, and social developments, the pillars that we consistently address in our formula. In addition, we focus on current events and the exchange of perceptions between people appropriate for this time of year.
With International Women’s Day on 8th March in view, our agenda pages highlight when ‘strong ladies’ such as Ellen ten Damme, Lizz Wright, Alexandra Stréliski, Selda Bağcan, Mariette Petkova, and others can be seen on stage. At Pennings Foundation, there is the group exhibition ‘I am’ with which Maryam Yazdani shows the social systems under choice and self-determination, and International Women’s Day is celebrated by the Latin American CLO at Parktheater. Kavitha Varathan speaks as the Brainporter for this month, and our columnists Jin Chen and Mathilde Lageman share their personal reflections, providing space for everyone’s own thoughts and contributions to the conversation.
Dear reader, In this edition

We ask pressing questions, showcase often still secluded communities, and cast a critical eye on societal issues that concern us all.
Many perspectives, new insights; together, we build an inclusive and flourishing society where all voices are heard a nd get equal opportunities to shine. Eindless Magazine showcases this

The Old Church in Middelbeers is a monumental, little church whose origins date back to the 15th century. It is used, among others, as an exhibition space. To preserve the church, the local community organized a record fair.

BRAIN PORTER
Greek tragedian Euripedes proposed “The first requisite to happiness is that a man be born in a famous city”. Well, we can safely agree it is not a requisite at all! Nevertheless, many influential cities throughout history have inspire great migrations, which makes one ponder there just maybe something akin to happiness, that people seek and probably find in a great city.
Dear Readers,
What are internationals seeking when they move to the Brainport region? And is Brainport a great city or region in the making? I imagine much like Eindhoven a century ago, when people - mostly from within the Netherlands thencame to be part of the Philips story, people from every corner of the world, come to find inspiration, their calling, and contribute to innovation. I have heard countless ‘Philips Stories’ in the past decade so – from cab drivers, elderly people striking a conversation at a café, a new or old business acquaintance, a neighbor. I realized later people are not really sharing a Philips story, but their own story. These stories even today are their coordinates. It answers the simple yet fundamental question for many - “Who are you?’’ Brainport will be a great region of the future if people find purpose and identity here. Why this? Why me? Why here? Internationals are likely to become ‘Brainporters’, if it is possible to be part of its story.
I lost my career here but found a calling… Brainport has challenged, rewarded and empowered me to drive change from the forefront.
I’m an architect and designer by training, and I experienced first-hand the high threshold to enter the labor market as an accompanying partner. I decided I’m not going to stand-by and watch my identity being reduced to the ‘wife of someone’ when I founded the Expat Spouses Initiative.
Usually, it’s not just an individual talent that relocates, but an entire family that uproots. While the working partner typically experiences a new routine at work, the accompanying spouse or partner often lack access to essential information, networks, or even a natural reason to engage with the local community, leading to mental and emotional setbacks.
Paradoxically, accompanying partners and spouses of knowledge migrants are often highly skilled and educated individuals in their own
right, but unfortunately, are overlooked in the local labor market. Failing to effectively engage them not only inflicts significant setbacks in the inclusion of the families involved but also hampers talent retention in the region-statistics show that one-third of all international assignments end prematurely and nearly 70% is due to ineffective partner engagement.
The Expat Spouses Initiative, driven by a grassroots community approach, is actively working to bridge this gap. Our community is now over 3,500 professional accompanying spouses and partners, and we’re still expanding. In the Brabant region alone, it’s estimated that there are around 23,000 income-dependent partners up until 2020.
I’m a proud Brainporter, because I found my purpose and identity here. With Expat Spouses Initiative, we are helping several other internationals find their own.

THE ISSUE
WREGION SUFFERS UNDER PRESSURE DUE TO TECH GIANT’S GROWTH
To be ASML or not to be ASML in Veldhoven…
hether it will all come to pass as anticipated is uncertain. ASML continues to build tirelessly and at a high pace in Veldhoven, where the multinational is located. Revenue increased by a third to nearly €28 billion in 2023. The manufacturer of highly advanced chip machines steadily expands its activities, buys land without batting an eye, after which construction cranes soon appear to add yet another cleanroom to the already impressive number. There are now 16,000 people working at ASML in Veldhoven. Involuntarily, the comparison with the expanding Philips in Eindhoven in the last century comes to mind.
The politics in Veldhoven is stirring. There are concerns about a society being oppressed. In the City Council, GroenLinks-PvdA has been the first party to speak out about the “shadowy sides” of ASML. Because the “Davids” in the region do not want to wake the giant for fear that the company will start making plans to leave. That seems to be an unrealistic (doomsday) scenario because ASML is connected to a unique chain of regional suppliers, often now just as specialized high-tech companies that not only cooperate but are also dependent on each other’s knowledge and skills.
CONCERNS
Nevertheless, GroenLinks-PvdA loudly cursed in the church. And they did so at a time when ASML is seeking attention. Outgoing CEO and Veldhoven native Peter Wennink is concerned about political ideas within the (right-wing) parties that want to form the new cabinet.
If new talent is not available, ASML will look to places where it is
Such as abolishing the 30 percent tax benefit for expats coming to the Netherlands. He fears a decline in knowledge workers, while they are considered indispensable.
The grabbing by the House of Representatives into the Growth Fund to fill financial gaps, while it is intended to stimulate innovation, for example. And making Dutch mandatory at universities, thereby keeping foreign talents away. However, the Eindhoven University of Technology maintains English as the language
of instruction. The growth of ASML depends on new talent. If that is not available, ASML looks to places in the world where it is, Wennink stated.
TALK OF THE TOWN
Despite the almost untouchable position of ASML, the first dissent was heard in Veldhoven at the end of January. The multinational’s tumultuous growth would be the “talk of the town” in the Municipality. However, GroenLinks-PvdA does not want to impose restrictions on ASML but does want to conduct a debate in the City Council on the desirability of the company’s unrestricted growth within the municipal boundaries, no matter how proud the community might be of the enterprise on the other hand. After all, ASML has also become the jewel in the crown of the Dutch economy and the engine of prosperity in the region, including all its suppliers.
Previously, ASML had abandoned a plan for a transferium with 2,500 parking spaces within the Best Municipality before the city council could make a decision, because buses were not allowed to use the A2 highway emergency lane to Veldhoven. Moreover, it would take too long to realize such plans, and ASML simply does not have that time. ASML does have such a

After years of shared adoration in Southeast Brabant for ASML’s economic success, the first voices of dissent are surfacing: should limits be placed on growth?
The Brainport region is under pressure: housing shortage, unaffordable houses, waiting lists for schools, sports clubs, and general practitioners, roads are congested. Meanwhile, the tech giant threatens to shift its focus abroad.

parking hub in Eersel. However, because buses from there are also not allowed to use the emergency lane (of the A67), too few employees choose to use this option. The company does not want to risk leasing more of such locations without it affecting the immense flow of traffic towards Veldhoven. Cycling is promoted as an alternative.
SENSIBLE
ASML is anything but given everything they want, argues Hans van de Looij, vice fractievoorzitter of Gemeentebelangen Veldhoven (GBV) in the Veldhoven City Council. As examples, he cites a zoning plan for De Run where, after good consultation with residents, it was ultimately decided that ASML could not build higher than twenty meters there. ASML should be able to develop, is the common opinion, but in a socially responsible manner. “There is no question of blindly agreeing,” says Van de Looij, “rather, realize that the only sensible thing to do is to continue the dialogue with the company to mitigate the potential consequences of further growth for all Veldhoven residents as much as possible.”
Caution is the key, lest ASML might reconsider their position… Van de Looij warns in his argument against the small-town sentiments that claim ASML gets everything its way. He finds
such sentiments to be unjust and undesirable scaremongering. He then proceeds to caution against the “big brother” Eindhoven, which for various reasons has cast covetous eyes on Veldhoven several times: “If Veldhoven politics start to complicate cooperation with ASML then, in my opinion, it won’t be the company that disappears from our municipality, but
‘There is no question of blindly agreeing’ according to GBV in Veldhoven
rather the opposite: forces might emerge that prefer to see Veldhoven disappear administratively. And believe me, then we would be much worse off!”
SELF-INTEREST
It’s a succinct example of the regional administrative power field within which a mature and international company like ASML operates. Globalism versus provincialism, where
self-interest - existence, independence, and autonomy? - prevails over the broad prosperity in the region. As long as administrative navel-gazing and ideological pettiness dominate the debate and municipal administrators continue to fear their neighbours, the threat of departure - or the decision by a foreign company to not come to ‘Brainport’ - will continue to loom over the region like the sword of Damocles in the coming years. Then we may still call ourselves a Metropolitan Region, but we are anything but. n

Music
One of the larger projects I work for is the BRIDGE Guitar Festival in Eindhoven, which returns to the Brainport region this year from May 29 to June 2, 2024. A festival that connects young and old, expats and locals through music. In addition to major artists such as Floor Jansen, relatively unknown bands play different genres. You often discover something that you don’t know yet but find great to listen to.
Drinks
I like being in the city, having people around me. If I go out for a drink with my boyfriend or girlfriends, we often go to Strijp-S; The Ketelhuisplein, Biergarten of Blue Collar. Me and my boyfriend met at The Little One, which is temporarily closed, but as soon as it opens again we will definitely take a look again!
Park
I like to go to the park or the forest with my dog Jessy. The Philips de Jong Park is a lovely park to walk in and a forest I like to visit is the Stratumse Heide. Before you know it, a few Scottish highlanders will be in front of you!
Dining out
I have been able to make many wonderful trips to Taiwan and Korea, among others. That’s where my passion for Asian food started. In Eindhoven I like to go to Hot & Hot, the chinese hotpot restaurant in town. Highly recommended if you want to eat something different!
Tips
A musical night out? Then take a look at the Effenaar website. They have very diverse programming. Dance evenings, hip hop, metal, really something for everyone. I love it!

After her studies, Monique worked for a while as an editor/producer at a TV station in Amsterdam but soon she moved back to the always pleasant Eindhoven.

De Financial dance: The challenges of women in a male-dominated world
In the spotlight of the financial world, women often face a challenging dance, a balancing act between ambition and prejudice.
This predominantly male-dominated world was and remains a challenge for me, and my ‘female allies’, in striving for equality where the first tricky dance step is on the thin rope of gender expectations. The image of the smart and determined businesswoman is sometimes overshadowed by stereotypes where she is considered too emotional or not assertive enough for the tough world of numbers.
The phenomenon of the glass ceiling, though invisible, is certainly felt as an unseen force that limits women in their climb to the top. Despite impressive academic credentials and professional achievements, women sometimes remain stuck in positions that do not match their skills and potential. Where a man does not doubt himself and secures a top position, women are simply passed over or appointed to leadership positions in times of crisis or uncertainty. Such a ‘glass cliff’ position is associated with a higher risk of failure.
The second dance step is the balance between assertiveness and diplomacy. Women must navigate between displaying leadership without being labeled a ‘bitch’ or too bossy. Moreover, women in the financial world must face the reality that networking can sometimes be an exclusive boys’ club.
The lack of female role models and mentors can make the path to success difficult or impossible. Therefore, ‘male allies’ are incredibly important. Personally, I wouldn’t make it in the male financial world without them.
The third and final dance step is the ‘work-life balance’, a challenge that is not exclusive to women, but is often experienced differently. While dads in the financial world are often seen as heroes when they go home early, women are frequently juggling their own professional career and/or being an involved mother. For me, at least, this choice always causes a feeling of guilt and remains an internal struggle that men, in general, tend to experience less intensely.
Despite these challenges, I must acknowledge that we are making progress. More and more ‘leading ladies’ around me are breaking through the glass ceiling. Companies are starting to see the value of diversity in thought and innovation, which is bringing about a positive shift in the perception of women in the world of finance!

Could Eindhoven become a bit more inclusive? Absolutely, Queer 040 says. The foundation therefore contributes to the integration and emancipation of LGBTIQ+ people in Eindhoven and its surroundings.
TEXT: MARIE-JOSÉ DEKKERS | PHOTO’S: QUEER 040
Chairman Johan Stribos, also co-founder and secretary of the Eindhoven Pride Foundation, shares the fun events with which Queer 040 sprinkles the city with cozy rainbow glitter: “Last year, we started with Saturday Serve, the drag brunch on Saturdays at The Social Hub.”
It was an immediate success: “Three in the spring and two in the autumn, all completely sold out. At Christmas, an evening edition was added because the brunch itself was sold out within two days. This year, four are planned. The Saturday Serve on 9th March is also
‘There, a very prominent Eindhoven resident will perform as a mystery drag’
already sold out. There, a very prominent Eindhoven resident will perform as a mystery drag,” he chuckles. Johan absolutely does not want to reveal which queen it will be but shares that “our secretary and my best friend Dennis Drummen, alias Destiny D, will perform. I am also frequently seen in drag at the brunches, as Jo’anna Gimme Hoe.”
He is already looking forward to it: “Many regular visitors come back because they enjoy it so much. That’s why we also offer a good variety, including in the themes.” At the Saturday Serve, around seventy guests can be accommodated: “Sometimes a bit less if queens come with hoop skirts.” The brunch is made possible by The Social Hub: “They really enjoy the event and want to support our foundation.” The other events put on by the hardworking volunteers of Queer 040 are also well-attended. Johan says, “In addition to Saturday Serve, we also organize XTRA, the largest club party for queers in the south, at Effenaar, and Kernkraft, the only queer techno event south of the rivers, at Stroomhuis.”
BEAUTIFUL MIX OF PEOPLE
Queer 040 is part of the well-known Brainport collaboration: “No one needs to fear being a competitor to each other. From day one, we share news and activities of other organizations through our social media, as a kind of gathering place. Yes, even an “Opsporing Verzocht” (Crime Watch) episode, for example, if there has been an assault. Or positive things, like the Rainbow Square that was opened during the first Eindhoven Pride Walk last year. We have since built up a large group of followers. From there, we looked at what was still missing here. I could think of that myself – I also have an opinion on it – but we held simple polls. People strongly indicated that they missed drag and techno. That’s how Saturday Serve and Kernkraft started, with a beautiful mix of people from the community and those with an open mind.”
In addition to Queer 040, there are more rainbow organizations in Eindhoven, Johan acknowledges: “Like the socially oriented COC, which is well-versed in Eindhoven politics, and DayDayGay (the name, of course, nods to DDW – ed.) in Plug-In-City on Strijp-S that organizes all sorts of artistically inclined events. But there’s a large group that falls between the cracks and doesn’t feel at home on Stratumseind. We founded Queer 040 two years ago with a few friends because we felt something was missing in Eindhoven. Just before the pandemic, we had already started the XTRA party at Effenaar.” >>

On Carnival Friday, there was always a Whores Ball, with many men dressed as women. That was my first time in drag, Dennis’s too, in our dresses from Coolcat. We had the best time, and naturally, it continued from there, also at home parties. Eindhoven could really use more queer vibes: “The Friso parties at the Effenaar have been gone for a long time, and going out in Eindhoven isn’t really great. I don’t like going to Stratumseind - I hear that from many people in the community too - because of the atmosphere that doesn’t feel safe. Rainbow flags that are stolen or vandalized. Reports to the anti-discrimination agency RADAR of cursing and unpleasant comments during the Pride Walk last year. I’ve always been able to say I haven’t been bothered by it, but last year I also had an unpleasant experience. My husband and I were cycling to the afterparty of the Pride Walk, in our foundation shirts with a little rainbow, when we were cursed at from a car window. I ignore that but unfortunately, I also hear more and more that people have such experiences.” And there was still a lack of a real Pride in June, Johan also thought: “We launched it in January 2023. Permit? Reservation calendar? Subsidy? That should have been done the year before at the Municipality. Oops! The press release was already out, the media picked it up. The Municipality, which thought that the fifth-largest city in the country should also have a Pride by now, turned out to be willing, and together with Eindhoven247, we were still able to arrange all the important matters
in time. That coincided nicely with the Rainbow Square. Queer 040 Secretary Dennis is a graphic designer and submitted the winning design. Dennis is also the person who created the Eindhoven Pride flag with the vibes.
Everyone who donates gets such a flag. For the opening of the Rainbow Square, the Mayor had already committed. We immediately also included the Pride Walk, together with COC, and 1,700 people participated in it, while the permit was for up to 1,000. And at the final party in the Effenaar, 2,700 people came, which
“We are here to celebrate diversity in all its colours, together with all the letters of the alphabet” – Eindhoven Pride -
was more crowded than carnival. For us, that was a signal to continue and involve the other queer organizations.”
The Eindhoven Pride Foundation Team, besides Secretary Johan Stribos, includes: Yema Lumumba (Queerhoven), Bas Berends (DayDayGay), Lenka Bachoríková (Culture Prize Winner, Ballroom Eindhoven), Benjamin Ector (Chairman COC Eindhoven and surroundings), Claire O’Brien (Queerhoven), and Rik Verhalle (city expert and organizer). n

CATCH IT IF YOU CAN
The Circus Coalition selected three short pieces from a new generation of circus artists for the second edition of Great Catch. They showcase their unique talent in funny, moving, and personal theater performances. Luuk Brantjes specialized in the teeterboard, his piece LONE is an ode to being alone. The Underground - NITE
What has to happen for you to feel like a mere clown? A fool on the margins. Someone who finally gets their cake but gets it right in the face. The lowest of all life forms. And what has to happen before you’re completely fed up?
Not content to be the laughingstock anymore? The Underground is a theatre performance, a concert, and a spectacular musical circus, where humour and tragedy are never far away. This inspiring NITE performance is a rollercoaster blend of theatre, dance, and music.
Guy Weizman is a maximalist who uses music, dance, and text to tell stories. Even the costumes from international fashion house Maison the Faux are an integral part of the characters’ personalities. You won’t be able to keep pace with everything that goes on, but no worries, you don’t have to. Just step in and enjoy the ride.

In the new theater performance Rhythm & Flow by ISH Dance Collective, musicians, freerunners and hip-hop dancers gather round the edges of the stage. What happens when the rhythms of these different disciplines merge or clash?
A dancer challenges a musician, they turn up the beat and feel the adrenaline pumping. They throw themselves into each other’s flow full of surrender. Feel your heart rate rise with spectacular choreography against a vertical wall, power moves on a transparent floor and rousing live music. This breathtaking show will keep you on the edge of your seat.

BERLIN
YVES DEGRYSE
“The making of Berlin” is a portrait of a city, built around the exceptional story of a Berliner who worked as an orchestra director at the Berliner Philharmoniker.
A man who would most like to go back in time to complete an unfinished chapter of his life. BERLIN commits, with the help of, among others, the orchestra of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, radio station Klara, and the German actor Martin Wuttke, to assist the man in realizing his dream. Along the way, however, they find cracks in his story, and the whole project becomes jeopardized.

Myrte Siebinga Zoekt een Kamer
DE WARME WINKEL
Hi there, I’m Myrte Siebinga (24) and I’m looking for a room (or apartment). Preferably not smaller than 12m², a bit in the center, and with high ceilings. My budget is +/- €850,-. I’m sociable, tidy, quiet (at least indoors), and just graduated. Buying something seems to be out of the question for the next 600 years, I’m afraid.. Do you know something or someone? Text me at +3197010255885. The golden tip gets a lifetime of free tickets.
During a sharp satirical housemate interview night at a communal living group, we whirl through perspectives, excesses, and options in a world where space has become scarce. Living space, nitrogen space, breathing space, movement space. Claiming space, sharing space, and the desire for habitable planets… Whether she finds a room remains to be seen, but the unparalleled theatergroep De Warme Winkel guarantees a surprising evening.

Birds – DOX & Dalton Jansen
Real freedom, what does it look like? How do you deal with the future if you haven’t had a safe nest? Are you ready for society? And is society ready for you?
In Birds, you are drawn into the world of young people living in a youth care institution. The young talented choreographer and dancer Dalton Jansen often looked out the windows at the birds outside. They were free, yet they spent the whole day gathering their food. How would he himself fare if he were soon free? Would he make it out there in the outside world?
Dalton Jansen won a Zilveren Krekel in 2022 with this performance full of dance, spoken word and music.

Huis van Troje
TONEELSCHUURPRODUCTIES & INTERNATIONAAL THEATER AMSTERDAM
The Trojan War is a myth, but the fall of Troy is a fact. But where do the stories begin and the facts cease to exist? When a war rages on the screens of our TVs or smartphones, we think we are seeing the truth, while it is a story presented to us by the media. How are the facts presented? And who benefits?
Troy is on the verge of collapse. The city’s future is determined not by fate or the gods, but by the Trojan elite: Queen Hecuba only accepts victory and is willing to sacrifice everything for it. Andromache must secure the throne for her son. And Cassandra believes she is the only one who can save her family from themselves. Through their position of power, the privileged class can afford a level of comfort and security. Meanwhile, the people are on the battlefield. But what is patriotism worth if overcoming war mainly ensures a privileged, established order?

ANTONIN RIOCHE | KORZO & NEDERLANDS DANS THEATER
The talented Antonin Rioche enjoys pushing the boundaries between art forms such as film, dance, and theater. In a personal way, he manages to pinpoint the sore spots of our modern life. His first full-length performance, Glitter, is about love, fame, and recognition. It harks back to our childhood where everything seems possible and dreams have not yet faded. A melancholic glimpse of lost moments propels the work forward. The cast embodies, with a hint of humor, intimate memories of dreams that are long behind us. In Glitter, the allure of stardom is set in stark contrast to reality. In a flirtation with tragic burlesque, we are taken to what we all recognize: the illusion of greatness that everyone carries within.

ROSA DA SILVA
‘“I will enjoy myself later.” But when is later? And how do you know if you are enjoying yourself? After living on a pink cloud for a while, Rosa has come back down to earth. Since the birth of her daughter, she wonders if she has truly followed her own path until now. Is everything as rosy as she expected? All the (well-intentioned) advice from (un)inspiring people around her are reviewed. A personal and musical performance, with a mix of beautiful ballads in which her love for Americana and Bossa Nova will clearly emerge! You see Rosa at her most vulnerable, but also at her most combative. Armed with ‘that voice!’, the best voice in cabaret.

Selda Bagcang
The Turkish artist Selda Bağcan was mentioned by Times Magazine in ‘Legendary and Historical Female Singers Living in World Music’ and in Rolling Stones Magazine in ‘100 Best Female Vocals of 100 Years.’
And that’s for a reason! Her music, blending traditional Turkish folk with rock, electronic, and psychedelic elements, is globally recognized and has influenced various modern artists. She is compared to legends such as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Joni Mitchell.

Zimmerman
Making the most romantic record of the twenty-first century. That, in a nutshell, was the plan Simon Casier (Balthazar bassist) had in mind with his record ‘Love Songs’. And the least you can say is that he made it happen. An album full of love songs is a delicate balancing act. The trick is to maintain the balance between cheesy sentiment and genuine beauty. Timeless, yet modern. Light-hearted, but never without obligation. And always undisguised.

M’ANAM
The intriguing eight-member male vocal ensemble M’ANAM brings a unique blend of traditional and modern singing.
With a vast range of musical experiences from countries like Ireland and Iceland, they sing in languages such as Irish, Latin, and Icelandic, effortlessly connecting with the audience. Let yourself be carried away on a journey through the mysteries and history of ancient cultures and peoples, with ancient songs dating back to the ninth century and contemporary original repertoire.

A young band from Antwerp making waves with a bunch of talent and an equal amount of passion and swagger. Driven by the metronomically tight rhythm section of Tim Penseart (bass) and Simon de Geus (drums) and fueled by the sharp and virtuoso guitar of Yunas de Proost. At the glowing center is frontman Sietse Willems, who appears to be the incarnate mix of Jim Morrison’s charisma, Robert Plant’s sex appeal, and Iggy Pop’s fury. It’s no wonder the band storms every stage, playing shows as if each one were their last. Since the release of their debut album “Flipside” (2004), this band has achieved leading status. They have already collaborated - toured and/or recorded - with an array of artists such as Prince, Gorillaz, Macy Gray, De La Soul, WuTang Clan, Erykah Badu and Yasiin Bey. Their eclectic sound called ‘’now music’’ or ‘’Hypnotic’’ ranges from hip-hop to jazz to funk to rock.

‘People with the ‘vest syndrome’
“When pulling over to tank at the petrol station in my club jacket,” says Rick de Groot (35) of Rocking Rebels, “you see people look. And they quickly turn away. But good to know, we’re not a biker club. We have about 25 members, one of them has a motorcycle. We like to get rid of the stigma. Rocking Rebels is a brotherhood that preserves and promotes rock-’n-roll, and rockabilly in particular.”
TEXT: FRANK VONKEN | PHOTO: PHOTOARCHIVE ROCKING REBELS
The brotherhood does this, among other things, by visiting rock-’n-roll meetings all over Europe. And the Club organizes festivals. For instance, Rocking Rebels is celebrating its own party in Asten on 12th & 13th April. It will be 45 years since the Club was founded. Hotel Nobis has been rented, and the 500 available tickets were quickly sold. The lineup includes bands like The Polecats, Matchbox, The Deltas, and Mac Taple from Eindhoven.
Rocking Rebels originated from the Elvis Gang. This group was not well-regarded in Eindhoven in the seventies. Even
‘Even the police were afraid of us”
the police were afraid of them. When the name changed to Rocking Rebels in 1979, the identity did not. However, many members no longer wanted trouble. And their interest in rock-’n-roll did not stop at Elvis, the god of then Chairman Frans van Dorst. Irreconcilable differences regarding the character of the Club emerged. This led to the dissolution of Rocking Rebels in 1984. As of February 2024, Rocking Rebels have been active again. The Board of the brotherhood is present in the Stratum Community Centre Fab28. The board members: Chairman Bendix
Goudzwaard (52), the Gestel Secretary Jan de Nies (64) - who has been called Jan van Gestel for decades - Merchandiser Gerard Holland (58), and Treasurer Rick de Groot (35).
Elvis Gang founder Frans van Dorst also joins in, but he can’t stay long. Van Gestel works as a stadium manager for the football club FC Eindhoven. “In 2014, a few of us were at a beach bar near Barcelona,” he says. “We didn’t exist anymore, but we were still wearing our Rebels jackets. A Spaniard shouted: “Hey, you from Eindhoven!” Those guys treated us like kings. We could drink whatever we wanted. Well, we always grabbed everything.” Holland: “Especially if it was for free.” The Rebels thus enjoyed fame even in Mediterranean Europe. “We were icons in England,” says Van Gestel.

At a Johnny Cash night in the Klokgebouw, we met everyone from the past. We decided to breathe new life into Rocking Rebels.” The brotherhood was registered with the Chamber of Commerce in March 2015. Goudzwaard progressed from member to chairman. “Rocking Rebels took a different direction,” says the chief engineer of a tugboat. “That required a calm chairman. Less emotional than Frans (van Dorst, ed), who is now our ambassador.
My job on the tugboat? One time you’re in Tahiti, another time somewhere in Africa. But always with my Rebels jacket on. Six weeks on, six weeks off. “When the board met, Rick was the only one with a laptop. He has professionalized things.”
De Groot modestly deflects not all the praise. “The other guys are just as important,” he says. “So, Frans’s role has become smaller. But everyone knows him. If Frans doesn’t show up, 500 people won’t come to Asten.” The board is already busy organizing the 46th year of Rocking Rebels. More information will be available in due time on the website: rockingrebels.nl
The club is aging, De Groot also knows: “We need young blood, but people with the ‘vest syndrome’ can immediately bugger off. It’s about brotherhood. When a Rebel is stranded somewhere with a broken car, he should be able to count on his brothers.”
His father ‘Toolie’ passed away in 2009. “He was fifty,” says De Groot Jr. “My father was part of Rocking Rebels, but he never revealed much about it. On his deathbed, various people I didn’t know visited him. And I often heard: “Are you Toolie’s son?” Among his stuff, I found The Polecats and Matchbox records. These bands are in Asten, how great is that? Through stories and photos, I learned a lot about my father. I’m proud to follow in his footsteps.” n

Equal Opportunities in the Workplace
‘Our staff must be as diverse as the people in the city’
“Eindhoven, work for what you stand for,” is the theme of the labour market campaign \=by the Eindhoven Municipality. Because no matter what you stand for, at the Municipality you will find a job that suits you. The campaign aims to contribute to positioning the organization as a pleasant employer for everyone. Because the Municipality also works hard to attract and retain suitable people. Alderman Mieke Verhees and Sharon Augustus, specialist in inclusion, diversity, and onboarding, discuss this further.
MIEKE VERHEES IS COUNCILOR FOR HOUSING, NEIGHBORHOODS, SPACE, AND SERVICES
‘It is meaningful, you can make a difference.’
“Working for a municipality means that you are committed to the people in the city. It is meaningful, you can make a difference. In conversations with employees, I often hear that this is an important motivator,” Mieke explains. “At the moment, we can fortunately say that there are still enough candidates responding to almost every vacancy. Our challenge mainly lies in attracting people with different backgrounds who look at our challenges from other perspectives. Specifically, people who might not quickly see themselves working at a municipality, those are the ones we are looking for! We would like the people who work at the Municipality to be as diverse as the people in our city. That only makes our service to the city better. The challenges in the city are significant. As a municipal organization, we can only respond well if we have the city’s diversity within our team.”
NO MORE LETTERS
The city is growing, and the organization is growing with it. Attracting the right people starts with the recruitment and selection of employees. Sharon deals with the challenge of attracting suitable people on a daily basis: “By selecting objectively and treating everyone equally, we will achieve more diversity in the organization. Thus, we continuously work on improving our job postings. Everyone should feel addressed by our vacancies, including those who have never worked for a municipality before. We try to eliminate as many criteria as possible that are not really necessary for the start of a position. Anything that can be learned in practice can be removed from the job description. Since September 2023, applicants no longer need to write a covering letter. The reason for this is that we select based on objective aspects such as competencies, knowledge, and skills. This was a big change for everyone and was not decided lightly. Research shows that personality traits, such as being enthusiastic or fitting within a team, do not predict how someone will perform in a role. In addition, there are many qualified candidates who might not be able to sell themselves on paper, but perfectly match the desired profile.”
2626 BRANDED CONTENT
EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES
The recruiters pay close attention to what someone is capable of: “We are increasingly eliminating the strict requirement of a completed education and asking for a work and thinking level in our vacancies. If a vacancy asks for an HBO work and thinking level and a candidate with an MBO education level and several years in a similar function applies, we advocate for inviting them anyway. In addition, we have removed from all vacancies that experience with a municipality is a plus. For some functions, that’s useful, but we want everyone to be able to work here. Continuously offering opportunities to the same group of people does not contribute to an organization’s diversity.”
Not only the recruiters focus on objective selection and equal treatment. Supervisors are also trained in offering equal opportunities for entry and advancement, and there is also training for employees on themes such as social manners, providing equal opportunities (anti-discrimination), and leadership development.
‘Young people have a fresh perspective and bring innovation with them. That is very welcome.’
YOUNG PEOPLE
To attract more young talent, the Municipality works closely with educational institutions. Sharon says, “From experience, we know that interns and trainees have a great chance of entering as employees after their studies. Therefore, it is intended that the number of internships and traineeships increases each year”. Mieke Verhees sees the added value of this every day: ‘Young people have a fresh perspective and bring innovation with them. That is very welcome. Our largest group of employees is over 45. We have a lot of knowledge and experience, but the addition and input of young employees are urgently needed to prepare our organization for the future.’”
ENGAGING AND RETAINING
New employees can expect a warm welcome from their immediate colleagues and HR professionals. Keeping employees engaged and retained is a key priority. As such, there is significant emphasis on career advancement, through numerous training opportunities and a development programme. The benefit of being such a large organization is the abundance of possibilities available. Mieke Verhees notes, “You really don’t need to do the same job here for 10 years. In fact, we’d prefer that you didn’t, as change keeps people invigorated!”
WORKING FOR EINDHOVEN
“Do you have a tip for applying to the Municipality?” Sharon is willing to offer one. “Every vacancy lists 3 to 5 competencies needed to perform the job. So, make sure your CV demonstrates how you have used the required competencies, because that’s what the recruiter looks at. We don’t need to read hobbies, personal details, or jokes in your CV. We mainly want to bring in a good candidate!”
Mieke concludes: “The Municipality wants to offer everyone equal opportunities. To be an organization where it is pleasant to work, where people care for each other, and where everyone can be themselves. Regardless of where you come from, how old you are, what you believe in, or who you love. That’s what we stand for! So, if you want to or know someone who wants to work for the city, take a look at www.werkenvooreindhoven.nl.”

A documentary that takes you to the paradisiacal El Eco (The Echo) in Mexico. Here, high on a hill, a small community has nestled amid vast nature. How thrilling it is, to be at the mercy of nature’s whims. It’s no wonder the film became a crowd favourite at IDFA and was awarded both Best Documentary and Best Direction at the Berlin Film Festival.

We tend to see film as a visual medium, but how differently would images work if there was no sound or if the composer had chosen slightly different music? With the three-part course The Power of Film Music, Kevin Toma (film critic, composer, and pianist) advocates for a more attentive approach to film music. Through numerous stimulating film clips, he explores the meaningful way in which music, sound, and image can interlock.

Sung Hwan Kim:
multilingual tours in Turkish, Mandarin and German
Language plays an important role in Sung Hwan Kim’s work. In his dreamy film environments, you see that texts and the images not always run parallel. Sometimes the text is slowed down, at other times it is sped up. In the video installations, words play their own role, forming a poetic whole.
In 60-minute multilingual tours, you’ll discover the exhibition Sung Hwan Kim: Protected by roof and right-hand muscles in Turkish, Mandarin or German. Try a language you don’t understand and discover what you experience when you wander through Kim’s exhibition with collage, light, music.

HORIZONTEN
The special thing about this group of painters is that they are all inspired by nature. The uniqueness with which the theme is approached can be found in the materials through which the artists express themselves.
In the paintings, besides the remarkable techniques, the different handwriting is clearly visible. In the Horizons exhibition, at the Kruisruimte, autonomous paintings, sculptures with beautiful paintings and textile works are being displayed. Content-wise, the work of the exhibitors is as diverse and sincere as nature itself. They explore the border area of abstraction; perhaps landscapes can be discovered in the paintings? Impressions of gardens? Associations with trees or parts thereof? In short, the heterogeneity, the different forms of expression and the personal perspective on nature make for a special and original exhibition. For the viewer, certainly a surprising experience!

REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS 35
RAITH, IN BEST, IS GROWING SIGNIFICANTLY
Everyone knows ASML as the builder of highly advanced chip machines, accurate to a ten-thousandth of a millimetre. According to experts, this can only be achieved here, in Brainport, because only in this region
is the necessary knowledge and expertise available. A legacy of Philips that has since been developed into a performance at such a rare high global level that the international competition has so far not succeeded in building such machines.
TEXT: HANS MATHEEUWSEN | PHOTO’S: KEES MARTENS/DCI MEDIA
MBut perhaps there’s a company in the region that surpasses ASML? That would be Raith at De Dintel in Best. They also manufacture lithography machines that write on a substrate via an electron beam. But they do it threedimensionally, while ASML does it two-dimensionally, explains Raith Assistant Operations Manager, Ad Fiers. So, does Raith make even more advanced chip machines than ASML? Yes, is the determined answer.
However, the scale at which Raith operates cannot be compared to ASML. There, chip machines the size of a bus and larger are shipped out. Raith’s largest machine covers two square meters. Last year, they sold nineteen of these. This year, that number will be twenty-five, Ad says with pride: “So, we are growing significantly.” Raith’s machines mainly find their way to the research world, he says, universities, and larger companies that develop chips.
ORIGIN
Raith is a company of German origin, based in Dortmund. The branch in Best employs eighty people. Just like ASML, Raith has a network of regional suppliers that provide all the components for the machines.
‘Raith’s machines mainly find their way to the research world’
Subsequently, the assembly takes place. “We don’t manufacture anything ourselves,” Ad clarifies. Not yet, because Raith has recently acquired a manufacturing company, he adds. The secret of the trade here too is exploring the limits of nanotechnology, just like their big brother in Veldhoven. There is a slight difference, though, Ad acknowledges that Raith’s machines are somewhat slower than ASML’s. However, they offer 3D writing capabilities, which is indeed a significant advantage. n

Resilience
It’s February 4th again, my father’s birthday; around this day, my thoughts drift away. As a young child, he had a great, carefree childhood in Manado, Indonesia. Adventurous Dutch people went to the colonies in the late 1930s to build a life there, including my grandparents. Indonesia became my father’s native soil, and he lived there with his mother, sister, and sometimes his father. He told me what it was like to grow up in the tropics; always outdoors, the adventure, the freedom, animals, sun, and nannies who adored the blonde boy. But one day, the carefree existence came to an end; in 1942, Indonesia was occupied by Japan. The Dutch disappeared into Japanese internment camps. My father was separated from his mother and sister, only to see his father years later in the Netherlands. He was a 10-year-old boy, alone in the men’s camp. A complete upheaval of his existence. He lived in Camp Solo for three years. Every day was a struggle for food, no space for oneself, and death lurking around. Surviving in constant fear. For my father, the absence of his mother and sister must have been enormous. He was entirely on his own. He later told me that the best survival strategy was not to stand out and above all, not to show any emotion. After three years of hardships, the camp was liberated. Through the Red Cross, my father found his mother and sister again. A sheet, a drawn portrait, and a camp scene embroidered by himself were the only belongings he carried with him. Several months later, all the Dutch were put on ships back to the Netherlands, and life went on. My father went to school and later studied in Delft, as if nothing had happened. He had a successful career as an engineer, got married, and even had twins. My sister and I adored our father. Many memories of the camp must have haunted my father, but not a word was spoken about it at home. I did notice, however, that my father was different from those of my friends; food was never wasted, every last crumb was eaten, being scared or crying was not done, and complaining about something simply didn’t exist.
Also, my father showed little emotion or grief, not even when he left my mother and twin sister when we were 10. He left for America and never returned. My father remained restless and started a new life or a new adventure time and again. Luckily, I always kept in touch, sometimes in Thailand, sometimes in America or the Netherlands, and even in his birthplace, Manado, where he stranded with his boat when he made a solo sailing trip around the world. It wasn’t always easy to have my father as a father, but his perseverance and resilience are still an example to me. Every day I meet students with similar stories at our school. War made them flee; trauma and loss haunt them and sometimes lead to confrontations or misunderstanding. But I also see resilience and an enormous will to live. I’m glad that, just like with my father, I’m sailing along on their journey for a bit.

Enjoyment in rhythm and technique thanks to the Mars-chine
How do you ensure that schoolchildren make music together, learn more about rhythms, and at the same time receive a fun technology lesson? The March-ine by Jorg Duitsman, Maurits Brock, Kim Duitsman, and William van der Put makes this possible. Together, they conceived and created an interactive, musical game. At the Maker Faire in Eindhoven, they presented it to the public. Rabobank rewarded their design with the Best Maker Award.
The Maker Faire is a global event where tech enthusiasts show how fun it is to create something themselves. Given that this can be the foundation of new innovations, Rabobank sponsors the Maker Faire. However, the designs do not necessarily need to have practical utility. "For instance, you see high-tech designs with robots, but also craft projects like ours," says Jorg Duitsman from Geldrop, who is a technology teacher in his daily life.
IDEA AND GO
Jorg's sister Kim is a music teacher in primary education. "She wanted her
'We thought it would be fun to design something to help her in the classroom'
students to learn more about rhythms and beats. We thought it would be fun to design something to help her in the classroom," he says. So, Jorg, along with Maurits and William, got to work in their workshop, "with my sister as an important sounding board."
SEE WHAT HAPPENS
The Mars-chine actually looks quite simple. Fundamentally, it consists of circles that are powered by rechargeable batteries. These circles are connected to percussion instruments: think of drums, wooden blocks, tambourines. By pushing plastic pegs into holes in the circles, the students determine the rhythm. With the whole class, they can thus create one large rhythmic piece of music. "Everything about the machine, we made ourselves with our laser printers, laser cutters, and CNC milling machine. The drive and the batteries are housed in transparent boxes, so everyone can see what happens," Jorg explains.
FUTURE?
Naturally, Kim's students have tested the Mars-chine. "They love it! They didn't want to stop, which says enough." And now to market it to become rich? "No, we're not interested in that at all. It takes so much time. I'd rather spend that time thinking of new things. But if an external party wants to take this further to market, fine. I'd rather go back to the workshop."
BUSINESS CARD
Besides their jobs as teachers, Maurits and Jorg run a small business offering technology workshops and training for education. "This prize is, of course, a great business card. It now prominently features on our website www.praktik.nl."

The Matthäus Passion is related to the Passion Time like eggs are to Easter
The Matthäus Passion The Matthäus Passion shall we go or not? And why or why not?
"Ten years ago, my brother persuaded me to accompany him to the Matthäus Passion, and since then, I've been hooked. That is to say: The Matthäus Passion is related to the Passion Time like eggs are to Easter," says a random visitor during the intermission of the performance by the Kempen Choir in the Petrus Church in Oirschot.
TEXT: MARJOLIJN SENGERS | PHOTO: LIZA VAN DE VEN
This year, there are seven performances in this region, five of the Matthäus Passion and one of the St. John Passion. The Kempen Choir, conducted by Cees Wouters, will perform three times, while Philzuid, the Philips Philharmonic Choir, Bach Choir & Orchestra of the Netherlands, and the Dutch Bach Society will take care of the other performances. The Kempisch Chamber Choir will perform the St. John Passion.
The magazine ZingMagazine publishes a passion barometer each year. This is a list of all Bach passions performed in the weeks leading up to Easter in the Netherlands. Nowhere in the world are these performances as numerous as in the Netherlands. The number of performances in 2019, before the coronavirus struck, was just under two hundred and fifty! In 2023, the first coronavirus-free year, the figure was already close to two hundred. Despite the length - the Matthäus Passion
lasts two and a half hours and the St. John a little under two - the former is by far the most popular, even among young people.
‘Applaud after the Matthäus Passion is not done’
But why is the St. John so much shorter when the story is the same? "The Matthäus Passion is written from a humanly relatable perspective, with Jesus as a suffering, anxious, doubting man. The St. John is conceived from the perspective of a distant, above-human God," says Boxtel Bach expert Kees van Houten.
GUILT AND REGRET
The denial of Jesus by Peter - 'Ich kenne des Menschen nicht' ('I do not know the man')plays a central role in the Matthäus Passion. Consider the two parts of the work as the parts of a cross; lay them over each other, and the intersection point is precisely the moment of denial. The aria that follows is filled with guilt and regret. 'Erbarme Dich, Mein Gott, um meiner Zähren willen. Schaue hier, Herz und Auge weint vor Dir bitterlich' ('Have mercy, my God, for my tears' sake. Look here, heart and eye weep bitterly before You'). The melody of the alto voice and solo violin are mostly descending and express sadness. The Matthäus Passion ends well, that is to say, even in the music, it becomes Easter Saturday again with the cheerful bass aria 'Mache dich mein Herze rein' ('Make my heart clean'). Applauding after the Matthäus Passion is not done, but some form of release is certainly allowed for the listener, in my opinion! n

Elena and Olga welcomed us kindly into their home, a house managed by Springplank040 and shared with two other fugitives. The place is idyllic, surrounded by the greenery of the park Stratumse Heide and a beautiful sunny day. This scenario creates an extreme contrast with the story of two Ukrainian refugees that we are about to tell, while Elena Chop begins to speak with great dignity and melancholy.

Fleeing from Ukraine, Settling in Eindhoven
42 42 COUNTRY
ELENA CHOP AND OLGA TESLENKO
Iam part of the international community. I chose Eindhoven as a destination to profoundly change my lifestyle away from family and loved ones, adapting to the local culture.”
It is unimaginable for me or any of us to be able to walk in the shoes of these two strong and lovely women. We sometimes had to take a few breaks due to deep emotions. Meanwhile, Elena’s mother, Olga Teslenko, watches me, and we smile at each other, using the only common language to dialogue without words.
When did you arrive in Eindhoven?
“In April 2022. We were living in Kharkiv, the second-largest city in Ukraine, close to the Russian frontier. When the war started, we thought it was speedy, but to be safe, we moved to the western part of the country. But the situation became more and more complex every day. We didn’t want to accept it, but we were starting to understand after the initial shock that this war was only at the beginning and not at the end. Then, my son - who decided to stay in Ukraine - insisted that we go to the Netherlands in Eindhoven, a city that he knew well because he came there often and loved it very much. We didn’t want to leave, but he was right that we would find it here, friendly and peaceful people.
We share the house with two other people, which sometimes is difficult. Here, my mother avoids climbing the stairs; she can walk in the park and meet the neighbors. It is essential because she is 81 years old and doesn’t speak English. Whenever someone walks the dogs in the park, they all come to our door. She has always loved them, and unfortunately, the dog we brought with us passed away recently. Unfortunately, owning a pet could create problems with finding a home, so we gave up on adopting one of our own.”
Are you helped, and do you feel supported?
“People are amiable, and even for her, staying here is a big deal. All the people support us. We came by car and only brought some stuff; the volunteers brought us what we needed. We had moral support from the neighbors and the municipality regarding everything like bureaucracy, GP, and medications. After a few months, we got a BSN number in just ten days, then the bank account and health insurance.
I have been working as a volunteer in a nursing home, walking and talking with older adults with dementia, and then I had to stop when I found a job. Straight away at Primark, then in the logistics. Even though I could do much more, working and being independent is excellent; I feel safer and calmer.”
‘I don’t want to put down roots here; my home awaits us’
What do you do in your free time?
“We travel on the weekend, discovering new places. Last week, we went to Den Bosh. We have friends from Ukraine here, and we go swimming together. And with my mum, I love to taste a good cappuccino in the city center or an excellent pizza at L’Azzurro. She loves Italian food, which is comforting her.”
What opinion have you formed of this area?
“I have traveled a lot, and this was the first time I had been to the Netherlands. This country has supported us entirely, although accepting the culture is a bit tough. I like openmindedness. I love communicating in English. People are very democratic, and I am happy I didn’t find any obstacles with bureaucracy.”
How do you feel living here as a refugee?
“It is difficult for me, too, to consider myself a refugee. I’ve traveled worldwide for pleasure but am not a tourist, immigrant, or expat.
I don’t want to put down roots here; my home awaits us. We are profoundly grateful but can’t wait to return to our country and for the war to end soon. Unfortunately, this is not the case at the moment. We have to steel ourselves and wait.”
We will part with a long hug, saying the only word I know. Spasibo. Thank you. n

From an expat dream to Dutch success: The journey of a hospitality startup in Eindhoven
This is the story of Suvigya Suvi who convinced three of his friends to become co-founders of a new, modern Indian restaurant in the city. With a modest start-up investment of €25,000, they joined forces to make their entrepreneurial dream a reality. Despite being outsiders in a market dominated by Dutch entrepreneurs, they persevered.
Some long days, sleepless nights and lots of brainstorming sessions became the norm as they mapped out their business strategy. The main idea was to establish a solid foundation, focus on providing good service and building strong relationships with customers. The hospitality industry in Eindhoven, as elsewhere, is highly competitive, so it required more than just a good concept. Within twelve months of starting Foodgasm at their first location with five tables, situated in Kruisstraat, they expanded to a fine-dining location with 110 seats - Foodgasm 2.0 - in Willemstraat.
The startup caught on and through word of mouth, the customer base expanded. They wanted to diversify their revenue streams to reduce risk. After starting fine-dining restaurant Foodgasm 2.0 in March 2023, in December of last year they acquired Urban Food Market with locations in Eindhoven, Breda and Den Bosch.
What began as a modest venture quickly blossomed into a fully-fledged hospitality powerhouse, offering a full range of services to customers throughout Eindhoven and beyond. Currently, the company makes revenue from Fine Dine, Food Delivery, Cloud kitchen concepts & B2B Curries. Suvi says he makes this growth possible with a bouquet of brands such as Foodgasm 2.0, Foodgasm Delivery, Masala Wok, Naanza, Gulab, South India Curry house and more!
The expat entrepreneurs show that making dreams come true is possible. They show dedication and perseverance, as a result of which they have now won their place among Eindhoven’s hospitality entrepreneurs.
Eindhoven, known for its innovation and technological excellence, has become a hotspot for expats looking to make their mark on local society. In this vibrant city, expats show perseverance and determination as they invest in a pleasant living environment, including the hospitality industry.
