look forward to remarkably positive ratings. Add the environment to that, because let’s not forget that the countryside around the city, and Helmond, is fantastic. De Kempen, de Peel, de Meierij; singer Guus Meeuwis has already expressed his love for Brabant’s heritage. Add to this the Brabant people in their element, often consisting of picturesque villages where life is good and the light burns long into the night, and we have just about all the sentiments in a row that make Southeast Brabant a creative, pleasant working and living environment.

That has never been different. Almost thirty years ago, ‘holiday man’ Frits Bom proclaimed on TV Eindhoven the most boring and unsociable city in the Netherlands. Since then, development has started which, entirely in accordance with our national character, has pushed the tide in the city and countryside against the current of public opinion. We had to be proud of our achievements, including economic

progress with inventions like the CD. Comedians such as Theo Maassen gave growing self-awareness a further impulse. The only good thing about Amsterdam was the train to Eindhoven. And the fact that Eindhoven was the football capital of the country for some time also helped: Calimero outgrew the inferiority complex.

No wonder that we, again, welcome more and more people who are attracted by the power of the Brainport region. Now we must ensure that we keep up with all our ambitions. It won’t be up to us. Eindless pushes the temperature up again with this third edition. It is still full summer, Eindhoven and the surrounding area are endlessly hot, hip ‘n happening.

Dear students, welcome to Eindhoven!

It is the city of technology, design, and knowledge, yet it conceals many wonderful surprises. It is generally not considered the most beautiful town in the world, but it is the most vibrant and exciting one, you have to know where to look, or you can wander around. If there’s one thing we know you love more than anything, it’s the opportunity to partake in unforgettable experiences and meet new people.

With its host of pubs, beautiful museums, vibrant street art, live performances, festivals, nightlife,

and more, there’s no doubt that there are plentiful things to do in Eindhoven that will fill up your time spent outside of university - you need to know where to look. The biggest challenge is finding a way to feel at home and start a new life. The faster you find a social connection, the better your experience. You will learn student life in Eindhoven is a subculture that creates its event, often with associations and private groups, don’t worry. You, too, will become part of it and find the one that’s right for you.

Here’s our choice of some of the most exciting things to do, including advice from local enthusiasts. Be warned, we are only scratching the surface here, and you’ll find plenty more. However, this is a good starting point.

STUDENTENAVOND

Every Thursday night, it’s studentenavond (the student night) in Eindhoven. You should go into town on Thursday if you fancy a long night surrounded by other students. You can choose from many places to enjoy yourself this evening. The best locations are ‘t Lempke, and Feestcafé in Stratumseind, the longest street full of clubs in the Netherlands.

PUB QUIZ

It is a modern example of a pub game, and everything goes at trivia nights, from celebrity news to the periodic table and from cartoons to geography. In Brainport Eindhoven, we enjoy games to sharpen the mind. Our favourite places for internationals are LAB-1 and cafè Carrusel, for Dutch speaking café De Wildeman and café De Spijker.

STAND-UP COMEDY

Start limbering up those facial muscles because there are plenty of cracking stand-up comedies in English at Eindhoven. Check out Pand P and Dynamo’s programs to find the best events for internationals. And don’t be shy: if you think you have the right talent and want to go on stage, propose yourself.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

There are many cultural events, and discounted student tickets are always possible. There will be many inputs and people to meet from museums to theatres, from film festivals to major international events. Learn about Eindhoven’s roots by jumping back at the Philips Museum or into the future at Mu. Marvel at exhibitions in iconic locations such as Evoluon or the van Abbemuseum, or retrace Van Gogh’s formative years in Nounen.

ACTIVE LIFE

Not just a healthy body in a healthy mind, attending student sports clubs - such as Thêta rowing club - and gyms is a perfect way to get to know many peers. The choice is vast: if you miss the mountains, you can climb the artificial walls of Monk or Esac. If you love urban sports such as BMX, skate, or breakdance, go to Area 51 or the beautiful, and completely free, open-air Urban Sports park.

GETTING AROUND

The area around Eindhoven (and Helmond!) has many typical Brabant picturesque villages and beautiful nature for walking, cycling and swimming.

Jeroen Cleijne

Founder of founder of Domibo Radio (stands for Donderdagmiddag borrel, Dutch for Thursday afternoon drinks), an English radio show for students, is hosted every month on RaRaRadio.

Working as a content manager for Eindhoven 365 with a target group ‘bright talents’, is essential to investigate student life. So Jeroen decided to found a radio show with the help of older year students to advise them to have the best student life ever.

What is the fastest way to connect with new people if you are new in town?

Start applying with different kinds of student associations: you can meet new people and learn many human skills too - volunteer for significant international events such as Dutch Design Week or Glow. Grab a bike and investigate the city

Your best places in Eindhoven

I love creative districts like Sectie C and Strijp S. My favorite place is Ketelhuis and I love also the beer festival Biergarten on Ketelhuisplein. Huiskamer is an inviting meeting place based in the Trudo Toren. You can have good cocktails, admire the art of local talents, or enjoy good Suriname food. To enjoy the nightlife, I suggest Cafè Bar ‘t, Lempke: since 2006, is one of the coziest pubs in Stratums-eind, perfect for a fun night in the city center.

Julia van Gennip

Former student in business administration at Fontys, with a part-time job at Tea Stories.

Which is the first thing to do for a new student in town?

Open a Facebook profile and follow the groups close to your interest to keep updated; there are so many that you can choose the one that suits you the most. Also, following an Instagram page of the places you like more is handy.

Why do you think it happens that international students drop out in the first year?

I have noticed that it happens occasionally, and the reasons are different. Sometimes they need to get used to our education system, miss home, or don’t have a big social life.

What do you recommend for improving student’s social life?

Go out, explore! During the day, I suggest nice coffee bars like Koffiehuisje, Denf, and Zwartwit Koffie. Then in the evening, I like to improvise on Kleine Berg, which is full of excellent restaurants and cocktail bars. And why not finish the night off in a great local craft brewery such as Stadsbrouwerij?

A student’s wallet is often empty; how to round it up?

Like me, with a part-time job that is very easy to find. Just go to your favorite place and check for any open positions. For international students, explore cosmopolitan restaurants and bars, where is mainly spoken English

Kees Brouwer

External affairs for the students association C.S.V. Ictus Eindhoven.

Why are Dutch student associations so significant?

Because they are often societies for socializing, they organize more evenings with drinks and hold parties. You meet many people, so building a circle of friends in your new city is essential. In committees, you can improve your organizational skills. There are many associations; secular, Christian, sportive, cultural, etc. Many are open for international students like AEGEE-Eindhoven, Esac, and Doppio, or have a separate branch of them.

What is the most important thing for a new student in town?

A bicycle is indispensable. Almost everyone uses it as a means of transport, and it is often faster than a car or public transportation, and it is also safe because there are bike paths everywhere in Eindhoven.

Where do you like to go by bike?

My favorite place to eat out is on the Marktsquare. There are a lot of lovely restaurants; some are expensive but have a genuine vibe to them. Furthermore, the Anne Frankplantsoen is a nice park to relax. But mostly I love to go to Stratumseind for a drink or a party, and I like Peppers a lot.

Dear readers,

The 21st Century is more than ever the age of the designer. Without designers, let’s call them ‘rethinkers’ for the sake of convenience, we will not be able to solve our current problems, future challenges, and complex issues. It turns out to be a challenge for all of us to approach the established systems and structures in a disruptive and radically different way. And that is exactly what is needed to find solutions to the countless complex problems and challenges that we, as humanity, are currently facing.

Therefore, in this global search for answers and solutions there is a huge demand for rethinkers. Fortunately, one of the most prominent design schools has been in our city for more than 75 years. The Design Academy Eindhoven is therefore a remarkable institute in a special environment.

With companies that operate globally, combined with an extremely interesting geographical location and an unusual small scale, Eindhoven is a striking city ranked amongst the most liveable

As a Fleming, managing director at the Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) Raf de Keninck lives in Veldhoven. Besides design, music is his greatest passion. Raf studied at the Flemish Music Conservatory, Antwerp. He is a conductor and clarinetist, has his own company, KingsMusic, and was music sector leader at the Fontys Hogeschool voor Kunsten in Tilbrug. For the formation of his vision on design, he took classes at the DAE. He believes in the qualities of Brainport in combination with the optimism of the region.

cities in Europe. Brainport Eindhoven has been a melting pot of old and new for years. A mix of different nationalities, cultures, and religions. A breeding ground for creation and innovation that makes a difference worldwide. It is remarkable that we also see this paradigm at the Design Academy Eindhoven, which is also ranked highly in the world despite being only a small-scale institute among other large-scale universities.

Not only education, the working and living environment stand out. As a Fleming, I notice daily that Eindhoven residents are creative, innovative, and generally optimistic. And that creates a wonderful combination of characteristics! I am therefore convinced that the three pillars - Technology, Design and Knowledgeunited and supported by an attitude of creativity, innovation and optimism, can make Eindhoven even more unique. By working together even more, Eindhoven can become a place where everyone can live a good life and be challenged both intellectually and creatively.

Everyone who is involved in Technology, Design and Knowledge, but also the City Council and, above all, the residents of Eindhoven, shape and make our city. Design Academy Eindhoven and I therefore want to be more actively visible than ever, so that we can get to work together. We realise all too well that attention to connection and communication is now more than ever essential. Only in this way can design offer the added value that is so crucial in the development that Eindhoven is currently experiencing.

Pick pears

The Philips Fruit Orchard (Fruittuin) will hold pear picking days on 9th, 16th and 23rd September.

Then you can pick pears yourself, straight from the orchard. Unfortunately, this year’s apples have been affected by the apple blossom beetle and later by the codling moth larva. After picking, you can enjoy a pancake in the restaurant or bake a pear tart or a Bourdaloue Tart from the harvested pears at home. Admission is free for children under eight years of age. The Philips Fruit Orchard - at Oirschotsedijk 14a in Eindhoven - was founded by Anton Philips as a job creation project. It is a twelve-acre orchard with apple, pear and plum trees. A.I. Restaurant

The Brainport region is at the forefront of technological innovations. In the Bunkertoren on the J.F. Kennedylaan, in Eindhoven, the first AI controlled restaurant in the Netherlands has opened its doors.

The Grand café-restaurant BUNKR is in the former student bunker old corps room over which a sturdy residential tower was built, opposite the Technical University (TU/e). Artificial intelligence is used to show guests to their table and make suggestions from the menu. All this via an app that visitors can download and fill in according to personal preference. See www.restaurantbunkr.nl

FREEMASONRY OPEN DAY IN THE EINDHOVEN REGION

The Eindhoven region has six Freemasonry Lodges. Four men’s lodges, one women’s lodge and a mixed lodge. They will hold a combined open day on Saturday 9th September in the lodge building in Potgieterstraat 41, Eindhoven. From 11 a.m., interested parties can learn more about this

general brotherhood and sisterhood of people who are not bound by dogmas, religions, or life philosophies and who are looking for answers to life questions in freedom. They also do that together, and there is nothing secret about it. The open day lasts until 4 p.m. More info: www.vrijmetselarij.nl.

Our Brabant Brainport-mentality…

At the beginning of July, Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s 4th Cabinet fell. In combination with the various ‘crises’ facing the Netherlands, administrators and companies in the Eindhoven Brainport region fear that progress may come to a standstill. This already applies to various projects. Nevertheless, optimism prevails. It won’t be the first time that Eindhoven and the surrounding area have rolled up their sleeves to pull themselves out of the doldrums.

10 10 THE ISSUE
TEXT: HANS MATHEEUWSEN | PHOTO: EDDIE MOL

The last major economic crisis in the Eindhoven region occurred in the first half of the 1990s. Electronics giant Philips was on the verge of collapse and the proud truck manufacturer DAF even went bankrupt. The two Eindhoven icons sent tens of thousands of employees home. In 1992, Philips’ austerity operation ‘Centurion’ cost 50,000 of the 300,000 employees worldwide their jobs. A year later, 5,000 DAF employees became unemployed. Did Eindhoven become the Detroit of the Netherlands? A ghost town from which people left in search of happiness elsewhere?

Eindhoven’s Mayor, Rein Welschen, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) Chairman of the Board, Henk de Wilt, and Chamber of Commerce Chairman, Theo Hurks, did not let things get that far. To strengthen the regional

economy, they devised a plan for cooperation between government, knowledge institutions (education) and the business community. To this end, they created a ‘stimulation fund’ in which all 21 Southeast Brabant Municipalities deposited about €5 per inhabitant. European money was added to that. A committee made proposals for financing projects and activities.

In 2000, the internet bubble burst. ASML was threatened with collapse, and in its wake their suppliers. The credit crisis followed in 2008. But cooperation had created a strong economic ‘ecosystem’ in the region that we now call Brainport. This so-called triple helix proved resilient and was extremely successful. In 2012, Eindhoven was named the smartest region in the world. Brainport is currently the second largest economy in the Netherlands, after the main ports of Amsterdam and ahead of Rotterdam. There is talk of a ‘secret weapon’ that is a recipe for economic success. Others talk about the ‘miracle of Eindhoven’.

LAW

In 2023, Eindhoven wants to grow quickly to 300,000 inhabitants, Helmond to 150,000. Due to population growth, the arrival of expert workers, refugees, labour migrants and students, the cities are facing a leap in scale. The construction of 100,000 homes is planned in the region. In Eindhoven alone, dozens of construction projects are in the pipeline, mostly residential towers in and around the city center. But the law of diminishing returns seems to apply. Two years of the COVID pandemic and the war in Ukraine have been a blow to the global economy. Shortages have arisen, prices and interest rates have risen, and inflation has hit. Not to mention the ‘crises’ in the Netherlands such as the nitrogen policy, the housing shortage, climate change, the energy transition, the shortage of electricity and the asylum policy.

To top it off, the cabinet fell almost two months ago over the matter of the reception of asylum seekers. The construction of much-needed homes threatens to come to a standstill, investors are withdrawing, newcomers are unable to find accommodation, ASML is hiring fewer staff, no major decisions are being made in The Hague for the time being, and new projects are not being started. The Dutch Design Foundation and TU/e, among others, have already been confronted with setbacks. It is expected that it could take up to a year for a new government to take office. Elections will be held on 22nd November. There then follows the formation of the cabinet. And that took three quarters of a year in the case of Rutte IV.

MISMATCH

But the Brainport region refuses, again, to let things come to a standstill. Representatives of the triple helix continue to show their fighting spirit. Eindhoven Mayor and Brainport Foundation Chairman, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, states that the region cannot afford to stand still and warns that developments in the region cannot be delayed. “We have been waiting too long for clarity on nitrogen and for solutions to congestion on the electricity grid.”

According to Philips Netherlands President, Sylvia van Es, the challenges for the region are too great to allow everything to come to a standstill. She sees the region as a catalyst for the Dutch economy. Sand in the engine would therefore affect the entire country.

TU/e Chairman Robert-Jan Smits shares the concerns of his fellow Brainport Foundation Board Members but does not think that the region will let it come to that. He argues for extra investments in the region and an equal position for Brainport compared to the Randstad. “That is now a complete mismatch,” he argues.

TU/e wants extra money for growth in the number of (international) students to continue to meet the need for talent. The question is whether ‘The Hague’ wants to finance that ambition. “But that also applies to the International School,” says Robert-Jan. “Look at the difference in culture. The Government really needs to invest here. I find it inconceivable that we will receive no response and that decisions will be postponed and put off when there are so many opportunities and possibilities here. Jeroen wants to talk further with the Cabinet. He is optimistic. He’s keeping his spirits up. We just keep going. That is also the Brabant Brainport mentality.” n

Natasja on...

Known for her vibrant personality, Natasja van der Velden-Huijboom is cherished by both locals and internationals alike. A captivating communicator, she empowers those around her with boundless energy.

Natasja is an Executive Program Manager and member of the leadership team at Studyportals in the heart of StrijpS in Eindhoven. Fueled by her free spirit, she has resided in global hubs like London, Paris, and Singapore, thus imbuing her with a distinctive cultural richness. However, it was Eindhoven that graciously embraced and warmly greeted her family’s return to the Netherlands. The city’s cosmopolitan air captivates with its lively culture and welcoming atmosphere, making it an irresistible choice to call home.

... City

I have been living in Eindhoven since highschool but moved in-and outside the Netherlands a few times as well but always came back! I just love the city and the surroundings since it’s green, easy accessible and has all the facilities one could wish for. When my kids were younger, I just loved to go to the playground at Karpendonkse Plas and to Kinderboerderij De Hazewinkel in Veldhoven. Nowadays I fully enjoy Strijp S, the great international restaurants in town.

... Art

The Dutch Design Week always inspires me and in my free time I do sculpting with a very nice group. A few years back I even got some certificates in Furniture Making but when I had to start working too many machines it became too professional for me. It’s just wonderful to get your hands dirty and create beautiful things and relax.

... Film

Natlab is the place for me to go with friends and to enjoy special movies that always guarantee a great conversation afterwards. With my family we just love to enjoy home cinema evenings with lots of unhealthy snacks.

WHAT IS STILL ON YOUR LIST?

In September, I might want to go to the Candlelight concert at Muziekgebouw and I will visit the Van Gogh Museum in Nuenen and ride the Lichtjesroute. And for the international community, I recommend the event Lounge Living In - Communities and international languages promoted by the Holland Expat center South, which takes place on September 16 at the Eindhoven Library

... Music

Every year the National Student Orchestra performs at the Muziekgebouw and for many years we are a host family for their students and of course enjoy their concert. We always go to a concert from Guus in the Philips Stadion with my family, a real enjoyable Brabant experience! Whenever we have an afterparty with my colleagues, all the fun places with great music at Stratumseind are the best!

Theatre

The International Women’s Day organized by CLO in the Parktheater can always count on my visit. The music, workshops and the opportunity to meet many of my international friends makes me very happy!

... Walk&bike

Being outside is the best way for me to relax. I like to cycle around Eindhoven with my loved ones, get coffee or buy cheese at Genneper Parken and to go for long walks to the Watermill of Opwetten in Nuenen or any other nice walk in in the green areas of Son

... Nature

Walking in the hills of Limburg, enjoying the woods near Lochem, the dunes near the Dutch beaches or anywhere else where you can see far or hear birds and I can make long walks with nice friends all good!

Embracing Europe’s Unique Strengths: Insights from a Cultural Bridge between China and the Netherlands

Having lived in both China and the Netherlands, I’m worried about my perspective on Europe’s perceived decline in power, influence, and wealth. While Europeans excel in lifestyle industries, I have concerns about our global competitiveness compared to the US and China. In this column, I reflect on Europe’s distinctive strengths, the need for ambition, and the consequences of complacency from my perspective.

Europe’s Strengths: Lifestyle Industries: Drawing from my experiences in both China and the Netherlands, I recognize Europe’s unparalleled success in lifestyle industries. The continent’s rich history, diverse cultures, and iconic destinations attract millions of tourists worldwide. France has been the most visited country in the world for 30 years. In 2018, its 89.4 million international tourists surpassed Spain (81.8 million), the US (76.9 million), and China (60.7 million).

Additionally, European luxury brands command a significant share of the global market. European football clubs, though influenced by investors from various regions, continue to dominate the sport. These achievements exemplify Europe’s ability to create captivating experiences and capture the imagination of people across the globe.

However, there is a need and urgent call for Greater Ambition for European countries. To thrive in the evolving global landscape, Europe must cultivate a mindset that fosters innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth. By promoting policies that encourage investment and nurture talent like in the US and China, Europe can lead in creating wealth and spearheading technological advancements. Building on its size and economic potential, Europe has an opportunity to shape the world stage actively and reverse the perception of decline.

My multicultural experiences have made me aware of the potential complacency that arises from Europe’s allure. Without a sense of threat, there is a risk of stagnation and an absence of urgency to address structural challenges. Europeans are stuck in endless discussions and time-consuming decision-making processes. Europe must embrace change by investing in research and development, fostering a culture of innovation, and supporting risk-taking. By harnessing digital transformation and promoting competitiveness, Europe can reinvigorate its position in emerging sectors where it currently lags behind. Proactive measures and a forward-looking approach will be crucial in ensuring Europe’s continued prosperity and its global influence.

So, as a person who is talking to various entrepreneurs from outside of Europe, this is the critique and worry I recognize. Europe needs to acknowledge their need for further ambition and international talents. Europe’s success in lifestyle industries is undeniable, but it must aspire to more. By embracing innovation, fostering competitiveness, and avoiding complacency, Europe can forge a prosperous future, strengthening its position on the global stage. What do you think?

‘This is a bit the university of the crazy things’

De Technische UnivEindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is the beating heart of the Brainport region. The institution provides the high-tech industry with much-needed technical talent. In turn, the business community invests in researchers and students. Chairman of the Board, Robert-Jan Smits, also wants to bring the city onto the TU/e campus.

“It is my dream to integrate the campus into the city. That we see people here at the weekend because the university is one big living lab

On the day of the interview, Robert-Jan Smits cycled with, among others, Aldermen Stijn Steenbakkers and Mieke Verhees around the Fellenoord in the centre of Eindhoven. The Municipality wants to build thousands of homes on this ‘international Knoop XL’ in the next twenty years, because of which the number of residents will grow from 200 now to 15,000. The chairman of the TU/e Executive Board is enthusiastic about the plan. “I like the fact that we are involved in the development of Knoop XL. I said: make sure there is a gradual transition from the campus to the Knoop. Create startup areas on the border, build student housing. We stay low and green while Knoop XL goes up. I dream of people coming from far away to see what is happening here. That it is lively here, one big living lab, and no longer the elitist campus that it still is. We are an international university that is fully anchored in the region. Eindhoven-based. Stay that way. With a backyard like ours you would be crazy to look elsewhere in the world.”

BUSLOADS

Robert-Jan Smits has been associated with TU/e for almost four and a half years. His term was extended by four years in the Spring. In that time he became an Eindhoven fan: “It is buzzing here. I really like it.”

The Brabant native (Waalwijk) is back home, he says, after years in Brussels as european Commission Director-General for Research and Innovation. Where, as the boss of a tightly regulated organisation, he distributed €80 billion to the best researchers, universities and companies to find solutions to social problems. So it took some getting used to managing in Eindhoven ‘a bit of an anarchic university’ where everyone seems to go their own way. But when the opportunity arose

to become chairman of the TU/e Board, he did not hesitate for a moment, he explains: “I had already heard so much in Brussels about the entire ecosystem here, the cooperation between government, business and knowledge institutions, I wanted to be part of that. Busloads from Brussels visited the Brainport region to see what is happening here.”

WIND TUNNEL

He ended up in a different world, he admits: “But I really enjoy the young talent here. The passion of young people, the drive. Then I often think; what was I like at that age? I guess I was more about figuring out where the next party was than what they’re doing here: pitching, raising money for the student team, developing startups. It’s wonderful that people are completely absorbed by their project and work on it in such a way. That passion is a strength but also a weakness. It is often about the individual and not always about the collective. I found that difficult when I came. On the other hand, TU/e is a bit of a university of crazy things. An example, we have a wind tunnel to test the aerodynamics of cars and buildings. A Flemish man ran the wind tunnel. He was crazy about cycling. In no time, riders such as Dumoulin, Vingegaard, Van Aert and Vos came here to test their aerodynamics. If you are too crooked or too straight, that saves seconds. Vingegaard won the Tour de France last year and gave us a signed shirt. I find that typical TU/e. Student teams build cars and win prizes. Go to Antarctica. A robot team that becomes world champions at football. That is the nice thing about this university. Everything is possible. We think outside the box and give space to creativity.”

AT HOME

TU/e works closely with Fontys and Summa College, two other large educational institutes in Eindhoven. There is cooperation within the student teams. The university is committed to innovation. Robert-Jan mainly sees opportunities to accelerate innovation. Collaboration with

the business community resulted in a new Thermo Fischer centre for electron microscopy and a cleanroom that ASML is going to build on the campus, an investment of €300 million. Thousands of ASML people will be employed.

“That was the big hit”, he says enthusiastically. “That is Brainport. Roll up your sleeves. To collaborate. To award. To discover. The togetherness. If other parties do not deliver, such as the Cabinet is now, we will continue. With each other. We do not want to be dependent on what The Hague does or decides. For me, that is typical of the Brainport and Brabant mentality for which I came and within which I feel at home.”

NEED

He knows that the business community is now asking for a completely different type of engineer than fifteen years ago: “They look for an engineer who can solve problems, who can communicate and who can function in a team. 82% of our Dutch students immediately find a job here and stay. This is 67% of international students. That is very special. This is because of our hinterland, but also because we link our education system to the business community. Students do internships and projects and are already in contact with companies. There is a great need for international talent, especially in this region. We are prepared to grow, to double the number of students, if the government cooperates.”

AFSLAG EINDHOVEN

Alleen met de goden (Alone with the Gods)

When Aaron is 11 years old, an unfamiliar man stands in the doorway. His father, Leen, knocks him to the ground. Not even that hard, but the blow is fatal. Leen ends up in prison, and Aaron and his mother Jo are left with a large debt. They struggle their way through life, always on guard.

‘Alleen met de goden’ shows the effects of poverty and of keeping your head above water when you have nothing. The story is permeated with disaster, but there is a strong positive undercurrent: if a person believes in their own strength, they can overcome a great deal. This performance was written by singer and writer Frans Pollux and is based on the novel of the same name by Alex Boogers

YOUSEF GNAOUI - LIKEMINDS FLAG

Yousef Gnaoui, better known as rapper Sef, previously graced many stages and charts with The Opposites, The Party Squad, Flinke Namen and Gers Pardoel. Now, he is hosting his very own show

According to Yousef, a flag is the symbol for all the social systems we take for granted. A flag stands for immutability, as if it can’t or should not move. These systems are limited by arbitrary country and city boundaries. On his new album, “I could die for a lot, but not for a flag”, which is the starting point of the performance, Gnaoui expresses his doubts and concerns about the systems in which we live. “VLAG” is a theatrical-musical visual performance about religion, spirituality, beliefs, and life. Stubborn ideas fall apart and merge into a new perspective. During this series of performances, no evening is really the same.

A Little Life

The book ‘A Little Life’ by Hanya Yanagihara has deeply touched millions of readers worldwide. Ivo van Hove has turned it into an equally poignant theater performance.

‘A Little Life’ follows four college friends in New York. When ambition, addiction and pride drive the group apart, they still bond because of their love for one of the friends and his mysterious past. Gradually it becomes clear that this friend has a traumatic past and they realize that only through deep understanding and boundless love can they maintain their friendship with him. This performance was recorded live at The Savoy Theater in London and will be shown on the big screen with us. This film has English subtitles.

OSCAR KOCKEN & LUCAS DE WAARD

In their performance ‘1’, Oscar Kocken and Lucas de Waard investigate the many faces of loneliness, and what exactly the difference is with being alone.

They delve into novels, songs, the Quest and their own lives. ‘1’ is heartwarming and heartbreaking storytelling theatre, black-comic, universal and personal, melancholic and hopeful at the same time. There will be a discussion after the performance.

The Eindhoven region celebrates its liberation every year

22 22 CITY & COUNTRY

The Eindhoven region is the only area in the Netherlands to celebrate its liberation, annually, on the original days of September 17 and 18. On September 17, 1944, the American 101st Airborne Division landed north of Eindhoven (near Son) and the British Second Army, spearheaded by the Guards Armoured Division, crossed the Dutch/Belgian border south of Valkenswaard and moved towards the city. Since then, the inhabitants commemorate their liberation every year with numerous festivities, including a parade, lighting of the liberation fire and the ‘Lichtjesroute’ in Eindhoven, and if it is up to the 18 September Foundation, it will remain that way for a long time.

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS

Liberaton040

Eindhoven now has a long tradition of commemoration, dating back to the Second World War. A day after D-Day - June 6, 1944 - Bayeux in Normandy was the first French city to be liberated by British troops, the same ones that entered Eindhoven on September 18. As early as 1945, there was a parade in Eindhoven in which many associations participated, and buildings were illuminated. In 1946, cyclists from Het Zuiden Cycling Club picked up the liberation torch in Bayeux, which they brought to Eindhoven by bicycle. As a welcome, Eindhoven residents were asked to light a candle behind their windows.

Both cities have had a bond ever since. Every year in September, high school students from Eindhoven go to Bayeux to visit the invasion beaches and war cemeteries. Every year in June, at the commemoration of the invasion, the “Eindhovense Lichtjesroute” hangs decorations in Bayeux. A delegation from the Eindhoven organisation, the 18 September

Foundation, also visits Bayeux every year. The Normandy city has a real Boulevard d’Eindhoven and recently the Rue du 18 Septembre in which the brand new Complexe Sportif Eindhoven is located. The friendship has been warm for decades, partly due to the involvement of the Dutch Bokken family in Bayeux, who have been committed to the commemoration for just as long.

Local Hero

Peter Kemp is chairman of the 18 September Foundation and Renata Vis one of the brandnew board members. The board is strengthening itself with a view to the 80th Anniversary next year. In 2023, one of the foundation’s goals is to link history and current events, says Peter. “It’s nice to keep the tradition alive. Unfortunately, war has still not disappeared from our lives, which only shows its social relevance and necessity. Think of the war in Ukraine, which is closer to us than southern Spain. It is important to keep telling the story of the war.”

THE LIBERATION OF THE NETHERLANDS IN A NUTSHELL

The Allies entered the Netherlands, which had been occupied by Nazi Germany since May 1940, for the first time on September 12, 1944. The liberation of Eindhoven was part of Operation Market Garden, the largest military airborne operation ever conducted. Thousands of American, British, and Polish paratroopers landed in the Netherlands near Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Arnhem with the aim of capturing the bridges over the major rivers Maas and Rhine so that the British Second Army could advance through the Netherlands around the Ruhr to the heart of Germany. The operation failed. It was not possible to capture the bridge at Arnhem because of strong German resistance. A narrow corridor was created in the southern Netherlands in which the Allies were continuously under fire from German troops who were stronger and better equipped than expected. For example, the German Air Force bombed Eindhoven on September 19 in an attempt to stop the advance of the British, killing more than 200 people and wounding more than 800 people. Although the rest of the southern Netherlands was liberated in the autumn of 1944, the other half of the country - above the rivers - was not and suffered severe hunger in the winter. In the Netherlands, this period is known as the Hunger Winter. Allied bombers dropped food to feed the Dutch population. Eindhoven was the capital of the country for six months because the military authority of the liberated area was located here. The Germans finally capitulated on May 5, 1945. This is commemorated every year in Wageningen, where the surrender of German Forces in the Netherlands took place. The liberation fire that is lit here originates from Eindhoven - and therefore originally from Bayeux. Athletes carry it further across the Netherlands. On May 5 there are festivals all over the country to celebrate liberation. On May 4 at 8 p.m. all victims are commemorated with two minutes silence.

The experiences of the Allied veterans have been recorded on film. Everything is stored in a database, including photos. The board wants to record the stories in an app that is linked to the website and a monument. This literally gives personal experiences a face, as with the stumbling stones in memory of the Jewish victims of war. The foundation works with Fontys to use the latest techniques and AI. The Local Hero Award was also presented for the first time this year; in January to 100-year-old British D-Day veteran Joe Cattini. He also became an honorary citizen of Eindhoven. The liberator is sadly now deceased. The presentation of the award should become a biennial tradition.

“As a non-Eindhoven native, the history and culture of the city touches me,” says Renata. “Really authentic. Eindhoven residents often tend to change something in their city, but nowhere in the Netherlands is the liberation celebrated like this.” Peter makes it clear that the foundation has no intention whatsoever to reduce or even stop the commemoration in the future. “On the contrary. With a view to next year, we even want to expand our activities. We have more ideas than we can execute. And with the youth this is alive as never before.” n

Pain of being misunderstood

A philosophical lecture on the complexity of pain - an often misunderstood phenomenon. Besides the pain itself, there is also the pain of being misunderstood.

Philosophically dealing with life and with pain can change our perceptions and perhaps help us tolerate pain, understand it and show compassion towards ourselves and others. Maria Luisa Stoop-Martins Cecilio will share her knowledge and personal experiences. It promises to be an afternoon where there is no need to think immediately in solutions, but rather in understanding and knowledge.

I think, therefore AI am

Can machines think? The arrival of chapGPT has reignited debate on this no longer very sci-fi question. Are we close to having truly human-like intelligence among us, and should we be concerned about this development?

The end of 2022 saw a surge in the development of so-called large language models like ChatGPT. The implications for fields like education and healthcare are already becoming apparent, but this may only be the beginning: leading AI entrepreneurs and researchers warn that future systems could pose a threat to society and be as deadly as pandemics and nuclear weapons.

Week of reading and writing

Some 2.5 million adults in the Netherlands have difficulty reading, writing and/or arithmetic. In Eindhoven, this concerns 7% of adults. In addition, one in four 15-year-olds has a language deficiency.

During the Week of Reading and Writing, we draw extra attention to reducing and preventing illiteracy. Do you recognise low literacy? And what could you do to reduce illiteracy? Check out the exhibition in the library or join one of the films. In the special escape room, you can experience for yourself what it is like to be low-literate.

In the meantime, there’s quite a bit going on

Lumens Dynamo Youth Work is committed to young people between the ages of 7 and 27, and that is important, says Nancy van Loon, because we must do everything we can to offer all young people perspective in the Brainport region.

30 30 F O CUS ON YOUTH WELFARE
NANCY VAN LOON
TEXT: BART ASSIES, HANNEKE VAN DEN NIEUWENHOF | PHOTO’S: EDDIE MOL

On average, Youth in the Netherlands are doing well because quite a bit is going on in the meantime,” says Nancy van Loon, who has been involved with Dynamo Youth Work with heart and soul for 25n years, as a youth worker in the 1990s in De Bennekel, later as manager. She has seen what neoliberal policies have brought about and was jointly responsible for important strategic changes in Dynamo Youth Work’s policy to counter, or at least mitigate, the consequences. Van Loon: “One in ten adults in the Netherlands can be regarded as vulnerable, and the figures for young people are virtually the same.” She sums up where these young people experience a vulnerability: mental health, undermining, lack of connection, not to mention the housing shortage... among policymakers and politicians, and later among parents as well. Take problems at school, for example. The homework assistance market is booming. Parents want the problem to be solved as quickly as possible, but are we investing in the right thing?”

Inspire, learn, work

The distinguishing feature of Dynamo Youth Work, compared to other approaches, is that it is not the problems of young people that are central, but their talents. “We call our working method ‘Inspire, learn, work’, or ‘ILW’. The idea here is that by participating in workshops or by joining a community, young people are inspired to develop their own talents. This gives them more self-belief and helps them deal with their problems better. It is important that we work from the meeting and that contacts are made.”

Van Loon mentions three examples of communities that are close to her heart: “The Dynamo E-sports Centre, for all gaming youth in and around Eindhoven. By also bringing gamers into physical contact with each other, we create a sense of community and that is important, especially in the developmental phase in which many of these (mainly) boys find themselves.” The second example is COMMIT040, the place for the free-run and pranking community in Eindhoven and the surrounding area: “Since August 2018, the community has found its home here at Strijp-S. Together with our experienced teachers, we work on the development of the sport and offer a place to young people from different cultures and backgrounds. Free-running is an accessible and social sport, where everyone goes through their own development. This is different from the wellknown traditional sports. This often makes young people feel at home and at ease. Commit040 mainly focuses on the community, supporting each other within the sport.” And

then there is NADA, the community for young bi-cultural queers: “Tolerance is an important spearhead for us. The LGBTQ+ community (in a word ‘queer’) is simply part of it. NADA offers a safe place for queer youth with a bi-cultural background. Together we provide a safe meeting place, a place where they can meet like-minded people and where they can investigate what support may be needed and possible for them.”

Van Loon recognizes that the expertise of the GGZ and Youth Care is indispensable for problems in the development of young people, but emphasizes the importance of communities, especially for young people with a vulnerability. “A community offers context and guidance, also in the longer term, and given the waiting lists in regular healthcare, that can be of great importance. Dynamo Youth Work is not the solution, but it is an important part of the solution.”

Generational differences

Another issue that Van Loon would like to draw attention to is the problem of generational differences. “Today’s youth have grown up in a world where digitization is a fact. She can hardly imagine a world without a mobile phone. This means that generational differences are greater than before, but also that generations can learn a lot from each other. We must ensure that they keep talking to each other, which is also important in combating loneliness.” Keeping in touch and community building are the common thread in Van Loon’s career, which has now spanned a quarter of a century. In those years she has seen her work change radically. “When I started, we moved into the neighbourhood ourselves, we went to focus neighbourhoods such as De Bennekel, Doornakkers and Woensel-West. Now, we also see more young people from middle- or higher-income brackets coming to us.” And then a sincere heartfelt cry: “I think there is a greater task for the business community in contributing to social facilities for its employees and their environment, so that municipalities in our region can focus more on the areas of interest. After all, the work in focus areas should not be put under pressure, because yes… there is quite a bit going on there in the meantime!” n

SPACE

The exhibition SPACE puts our capacity for spatial insight to the test. When we think of ‘space’, we quickly think of the literal meaning, an architectural space, made up of four walls with right angles, with a ceiling, a passage and possibly windows. However, ‘space’ can also have an abstract or figurative meaning.

For the exhibition SPACE, six contemporary Dutch visual artists who use photography or video as a medium have been invited: Hans Biezen, Femke Dekkers, Willem van den Hoed, Michiel Kluiters, Menno de Nooijer, Marleen Sleeuwits. Each of them interprets the concept of space and spaciousness in their own way. They play with scale, perspective, optical illusion, light and shadow effect. The exhibition is about the interaction between space and photography, the duality between two- and three-dimensionality and between suggestion and reality. The alienating effect that their work evokes puts our capacity for spatial insight to the test.

Open Monument Day Eindhoven

The Annual Heritage Open Day will take place in the weekend of Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September. There are also openings and activities in Eindhoven. On Sunday, September 10th, between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., visitors can view the striking Philips offices on Boschdijk. The building is a national monument and was the headquarters of Philips Netherlands for many years. Those interested will have reserve a ticket for a specific time slot. This is necessary, among other things, because of limited lift capacity. Unfortunately, the building is NOT wheelchair accessible. During the open days, historians and architects will be present to give short, guided tours.

Specially for Open Monument Day 2023, the VVV will provide a free monument walk from the former Philips offices on Boschdijk. Find out everything about the Philips Vredeoord complex, the history of De Barrier, the monumental Van Arskerk and the famous pond at Hendrik de Keyzerplein, where the Smurf Paradise can be seen every year during the “Lichtjesroute”. Positions #7: Everything worthwhile is done with other people

In the Van Abbemuseum you can discover the universe from a new perspective. In the immersive installation Black Liberation Zodiac by artist Nolan Oswald Dennis you can see the night sky through bowls of water on the ground. Dennis refers to stagnant water, such as lakes, as one of the oldest astrological instruments.

This work fills one of the 10 rooms of the exhibition Positions #7: Everything worthwhile is done with other people focuses on art that has been created through collaboration. On view until 24 September 2023, art collectives show you that collectively we achieve more than on our own.

Art Club: Dutch Design Week special

After a summer break, the Van Abbemuseum Art Clubs start again this month! On September 2, the museum kicks off with a special Dutch Design Week edition of the Family Art Club: young and old together make a Rough and Ready Chair from recycled material. You will later see these chairs in the Dutch Design Week exhibition The space between us, on view from 7 October to 19 November 2023.

Also, from Saturday September 9, the Children’s Art Club will take place again: young museum enthusiasts aged 6 to 12 discover the artist in themselves every week. After visiting the exhibitions, they get to work themselves with clay, paint or pencils.

Check out vanabbemnuseum.nl for all (children’s) activities

Delinking and Relinking lets you see, hear, feel and smell art

In the collection display Delinking and Relinking you experience art with all your senses. This extensive exhibition stretches over five floors.

How does the painting Portrait of a Stage Actress (1927) by Charley Toorop feel? Or what does the work Hommage à Apolllinaire (1912) by Marc Chagall smell like? And how does Composition XIV (1913) by Piet Mondrian sound? The free Smartify tour guides you through all the multi-sensory tools in the exhibition. With this, the Van Abbemuseum makes art accessible to everyone, including blind and deaf visitors.

PREHISTORISCH DORP

The

and Surrounding Area Design Shop

Smitje op de Kleine Berg is one of the few traditional shops in Eindhoven city centre. A shop full of buttons, ribbons, and fabrics. Ideas have been able to become reality here for more than a hundred years and your imagination is given free rein. Where you can find the dress of your dreams for the day of your life or a special dress to shine at a gala.

Smitje is a haberdashery specialist. Still old-fashioned, where your senses are assailed by all the types and colours on offer. You might as well call Smitje a colourful design shop. Customers from far and wide know how to find the store, looking for fabrics, needles, zips, embroidery tape, elastic, wool, and yarn applications. If you want it, Smitje has it. The same goes for an affordable wedding or prom dress. But Smitje also has the fabric to make the dresses herself. Harrie Smits (73) has been working in the business since he was fourteen. He still sells zips, yarn, cords, wool, knitting needles, scissors, needles and beads every day. The button collection is the largest in Europe. From mother-of-pearl to plastic. From iron to gold and silver. Two walls full. A sight now that breathless tourists gratefully photograph. Not to mention the time they - shouldtake to make a choice…

He is still the face of the store and intends to remain so for the time being. Smitje was founded in 1921 and was first located in Strijp. Harrie took over the business from his father after working in the store for years. Smitje has been in a medieval building in the city centre since the early 1990s. To accommodate the thousands of haberdashery items, Harrie bought the adjacent buildings and

built a few floors on top. The business took on something of a colourful maze. Where the prom dresses now hang used to be the hayloft.

Harry is an old-fashioned salesman. He is still in the store every day, together with his team of employees, including his 20-year-old granddaughter Jill and a sister-in-law. He enjoys the atmosphere and likes to have a chat with customers, old and young. Smitje may look nice and old-fashioned, but the business certainly keeps up with the times. A young designer, who also makes clothes for customers, works in the studio. They can also decide the design together with him. Harrie notes that more young people are finding their way to the store again. That is at times when something is popular again, such as knitting and design currently.

He also has an eye for the ecological aspect, so that our children’s children will still have a good environment in the future. “There is a wide range of environmentally friendly fabrics, in the hobby department we do as much as possible with fabrics. They also provide booklets about making your own clothing, repairing and reusing clothing. For example, you can make bags or stuffed animals. We promote recycling as much as possible.”

Learning Dutch, really not that easy

“They should learn Dutch .....” When I hear this, I feel quite uncomfortable. Thousands of students each year learn Dutch with us and find their way in society. Is that so easy? No, not at all, but they do. I’m reminded of Omar. In 2013 he came to the Netherlands via Greece and Turkey and applied for asylum, before the large influx of refugees in 2015. Life in his homeland was made impossible for him. He came to STE and was guided by Vluchtelingenwerk (Refugee Work). Omar wanted to learn English, which was still quite poor, and the lady from Vluchtelingenwerk translated for him. I tried to make it clear to him that the intention was to learn Dutch, but Omar remained firm; It had to be English, he wanted to go to TU/e and you needed English for that. I wanted to help him, saw his frustration and struggle, and offered to teach him English for free on Saturdays whilst he learned Dutch during the week.

Omar turned out to be a special person with enormous perseverance and huge potential. A special friendship was born. I saw him cry once when he talked about the harsh crossing. For a moment I was able to see into that dark world, which we often see on screen. Omar passed his international English exam. He went to college, did an internship, took the state exam, became a Dutch citizen, and now has a wonderful job.

He got married, we were at his wedding, there were almost as many Dutch people as Syrians. His son was born two weeks ago. I had to laugh when I saw that he had a sign in the garden with the baby’s name - well established, Omar!

I tell this story because, to me, all students are someone, a face, a history, a story. Many of our students are refugees like Omar, even more of our students are expats or migrant workers. Everyone has a reason to be here and we as a country are open to this, we need people for our labour market or have an agreement to accept refugees. Maybe that will change in the future. But now it’s up to all of us to manage the flow of cultures and let them live together. Of course, I think that internationals should learn the Dutch language, but learning a completely new language is often thought of too lightly. When you are older, learning a language is more difficult. Learning a language takes a lot of time, you don’t do that in a few months.

We should certainly not take ourselves as a point of reference. Dutch people (depending on your level of education) sometimes learn two or three foreign languages. Some often even start learning English in kindergarten. Not everyone speaks English, by the way, and the oft mentioned alienation felt by older native Eindhoven residents is something that we must take seriously. In fact, I hear the same thing from our students, they also do not always feel heard: “Nobody speaks Dutch to me, how can we learn it well?” Do we hear a foreign accent, then immediately switch to English? It seems as if we have no patience for novice learners of Dutch. If we want our internationals to learn Dutch, then we also have to speak Dutch to them instead of English, offer them even more language training, and set up initiatives where, for example, internationals come into contact with native Eindhoven residents. We have to do it together.

THE MAN BEHIND THE MAKER FAIRE

Innovation and the Magic of Making at the Maker Faire

On September 23 and 24, the Maker Faire Eindhoven returns to Stadhuisplein for its tenth edition. With the theme the ‘magic of making’, the Faire brings together creators from all over the world to showcase their newest inventions and technological innovations in 3D printing, fashion, robotics, and more in a fun an interactive way.

René Paré, director of MAD Emergent Art Center and the Maker Faire, gives Eindless an inside look of the Faire and the role innovation plays within it.

René: MAD Emergent Art Center is an art science initiative in Eindhoven, which has been around for more than 25 years. We connect technology and art to make it more accessible for people in society. We organize events and we develop event formats to make this happen. And when the format is a success, it can stand on its own. As a lab, we experiment and develop ways to connect art and technology for people and society. And one of the biggest projects that we are doing is the Maker Faire Eindhoven, which is a festival for creative technology.

ABOUT MAKER FAIRE EINDHOVEN

René: “The yearly Eindhoven Maker Faire is a celebration of creativity and ingenuity, that covers a very wide range of making. Imagine a 3D model of the makers world, and you see it stretch from high-tech to low-tech, from young to old, from art to education, from professional to amateur.

This gathering together, makers and visitors alike, is based on shared passion and curiosity, that is resulting in a special flow of energy and inspiration. Every visitor and every presenting maker feels part of the movement and the community. Every time there is wonder and surprise about the innovative solutions and inventions, original approaches to learning, sustainable solutions, creative applications, and experiments.”

INNOVATION, THE MAKERS, AND SPECIAL GUESTS

René: “The Eindhoven Maker Faire is challenging innovative solutions and fresh ideas by

the very nature of the maker spirit. True and disruptive innovation is often the result of a process where curiosity, tinkering and playfulness lead to serendipity and sparks connecting elements. This process is what makers are doing and promoting.”

René: “In total there will be 300 makers and around 120 presentations. Examples of projects that makers present are numerous and announced at the website. To mention a few: WIFI controlled hovercrafts; ‘roll-aball’ horse game; 3D printed prosthetics; programming robots; humanoid robot face; algorithmic art; multisport vest; cheerful electronics LED kits and synths; light art; drum robot; 3D serious gaming lab; Haptic Touch devices; biomaterials printing; air-based circuits system; reinventing boxing.”

René: “The makers are difficult to characterize because they are so diverse. There are makers that are true inventors who have an idea to make something. There are startups, graduates from university or polytechnic schools that have made a product, service, or company. There are artists that we invite with electronics installations, media installations with kinetic or robotic art; and artists with creative data, creative coding that make media with computer code. There are musicians and theatre makers as well.”

René: “And we will have special guests. Mitch Altman, who is a world-famous hacker from Berlin to do a talk and workshop on soldering. And Anouk Wipprecht. She’s a world-famous fashion technology designer

known for her robotic dress, which is a dress with electronics and mechanics that responds to the environment. I have to also mention Ponytrap. Ponytrap is a robotic drum machine made by two musicians who wanted to play their violins with rhythmic support, so they built their own drum robot.”

IN THE MAKER SPIRIT

René: “Everybody can be a maker. We say, ‘the first time you come to visit the Maker Faire, you come as a visitor, but you leave as a maker’ because you can learn things and you can take away things that you can do at home or at your work or at school.”

René: There is a very welcoming character to the festival. It’s open and people like to share their knowledge, skills, and inspiration. And it’s not commercial. So, people are very easy going about sharing, having fun, learning, and getting to know each other. That makes it a special kind of festival.

René: “The Maker Faire sparks ideas and imagination of what you can do and makeit shows great creative and dedicated people having fun and being proud of the things they learned and built. It challenges people to think about making themselves and becoming a Maker.” n
