Brainport voor elkaar recently presented eight new partners, bringing the total to sixty. Eindhoven mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem, also chairman of the Brainport Foundation, launched the social counterpart of Brainport Development at the beginning of this year. By focussing on ‘prosperity and well-being belong together’, Brainport voor elkaar is committed to inhabitants in the city and region. They belief that all residents should benefit from economic progress and be able to participate. Goals have now been formulated for this purpose, such as attention to debts and help with prevention and elimination.
The power of the triple helix, when business community, knowledge institutions (education) and government work together. In which municipalities Eindhoven and Helmond were co-initiators. In this Eindless, Rabobank director Marc Cootjans pleads for an equivalent to art, culture and design - see page 6 – to develop the attraction of the area. They are under pressure. This is evident from the Culture Scan, which states that theater attendance, etc., has not yet reached pre-corona levels, while the Design Vision warns of exodus. Read the article on page 8.
Rabobank is looking for a collaboration with the Dutch Design Foundation. In this Eindless, the designers expressly present themselves as partners for finding answers to social issues, see page 12. Miriam van der Lubbe, Creative Head of Dutch Design Week, calls this ‘design thinking’. She speaks of the problemsolving potential of creatives in and around Eindhoven. The Design Vision advocates - better - connections between business, education and government for the above. Incubator centres must remain available for talent to keep them here.

Marc Cootjans is Rabobank Director in the Brainport region. From this position he wants to take this area to a higher level. “I mean the entire Brainport region. So, both the residents and the companies flourish here. From startups and scaleups to multinationals, and from high tech to food and design.” Rabobank recently entered a partnership with the Dutch Design Foundation. “We want to help creative people take the next step.”
It is often said that the Brainport region is one of the most successful regions in our country. And rightly so, I think. But that’s not just about the wonderful companies that are located here. An entire ecosystem has emerged in which governments, knowledge institutions and companies actively collaborate, and all this in an environment where it is pleasant to stay.
Because the latter is sometimes ignored, it is also the theatres, cinemas, musea, music centres and creative hotspots that make people want to settle in this region.
As a cooperative bank, we want to be there for the entire Brainport region. So also, for creative industry. For example, we recently entered a partnership with the Dutch Design Foundation. A very conscious choice. We are convinced that, as a region, we can only really make a difference if creativity and technology actively seek each other out. For example, by thinking together
about solutions to social issues. Dare to colour outside the lines, think differently than others. And then translate those ideas into technological solutions. That makes this region so unique.
What does our role within that collaboration look like in concrete terms? As Rabobank we have an extremely large network. For example, we actively link designers to the business community because too often creative ideas are left on the shelf. We also use our knowledge. For example, to help self-employed people or artists to start a business so that they can successfully market their ideas. We also regularly call on the help of creators to look at social issues in a different way. For example, designers are actively thinking about the farm of the future and new ways of housing construction.
Through all these initiatives, we want to give a boost to people who dare to think out of the box. Because without their insights, without their creative input, we would never progress as a society. I’m convinced of that.

Eindhoven has two professional football organisations: PSV and FC Eindhoven. Of the two clubs, FC Eindhoven is the oldest and PSV the most successful. FC Eindhoven was founded in 1909 and were National Champions once, in 1954. PSV was founded in 1913 by the Eindhoven light bulb manufacturer Philips and have been National Champions 24 times. PSV also won the UEFA Cup in 1978 and the European Cup, the predecessor of the Champions League, in 1988. Not only have PSV returned to the Champions League after a five-year absence, but the football club celebrated its 110th Anniversary at the beginning of September. PSV did this with a chic gala on the beautiful De Wielewaal estate in Eindhoven, once owned by Frits Philips, son of Philips founder Anton. Philips has sponsored PSV for just as long. This is the longest running sponsorship partnership in the world and therefore worth a mention in the Guinness Book of Records. During the gala, Wim van der Leegte, founder of sponsor VDL, was appointed honorary member of the club. Information at: www.psv.nl
The Gerard & Anton Awards were presented at the High-Tech Campus, Eindhoven at the end of August. 10 + 1 winners were chosen from a list of more than fifty promising nominations. The prizes are awarded annually. It was the 9th Edition.
The Gerard & Anton Awards (named after the founders of Philips) are awarded every year to the ten most promising startups. Alphabeats, Antennex, VivArt-X, MantiSpectra, Gilbert Technologies, GrAI Matter Labs, Integer Technologies, TIBO Energyhub, Neople and Fonotech received the attention of around
three hundred attendees. Pakt received the Young Talent Award. Research shows that 75% of Gerard & Anton Award winners are successful. That is an unprecedentedly high number, according to Innovation Origins, which organises the award ceremony, together with Mikrocentrum. The winners like to stay in touch with each other. A Gerard & Anton Community is now being established. The first activity will be a dinner in the Philips Museum for all winners, following the tenth edition (which will celebrate the 100th winner) next year.

The Eindhoven artist, Dick Verdult, has made a low budget feature film entitled “If your ass just laughs”. It’s a satirical farce about the rich and their misplaced obsession with authentic experiences. The family’s urge to really experience reality will actually keep them far away from reality. With this slightly absurd film, he sketches a striking portrait of the mentality of
the very rich, according to a reviewer. The film is a largely Eindhoven production. The cast consists of a mix of national and local actors, including Luk Sponselee, Peter Fenger, Lola Koppen, Harun Bahasoean and Katrien van Beurden. The film recently premiered in the Lab-1 cinema.
Eindhoven is a small city but is considered to be one of the most desirable cities in the world ‘to set up a shop’. According to the Monocle Small Cities Index 2023, Eindhoven is “brimming with creative energy and entrepreneurial ambitions”. Design is one of the pillars of the city’s dynamism and appeal. To keep it that way, action is required, otherwise there is a risk of exodus, design experts believe.

Asmall metropolis. For example, Eindhoven is mentioned in the Design Vision 2023-2030, in which the ‘design field’ indicates its place in the city with the aim of clearly naming it, preserving, and further expanding it. The designers want to do this together “with the city and all residents, organisations, and companies, in concrete projects and initiatives, conceptual ideas and even dreams. To realize ambitions, promote and strengthen collaborations, also outside the design field. A design vision that makes the power of design clear and is full of hope about the future. That future has already begun.”
Some numbers. Every year 180 designers graduate from the DAE. The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) also offers Industrial Design and Engineering. The number of graduates is unknown. The independent research and consultancy agency Dialogic lists 6,700 designers in the city. However, this also includes Philips (Design), Signify and ASML employees. The Facebook group Designers United Eindhoven has about 1,200 members. There are 2,062 companies active in the design sector and 73 agencies. According to the Creative Industry Monitor, there are approximately 1,500 jobs in the design sector in the Brainport region, at this moment.
Finally, the DDW, the largest design event in Northern Europe, attracts approximately 350,000 visitors to Eindhoven annually. Every year, approximately 2,600 designers present themselves at more than a hundred locations in the city. The added value of design in the Eindhoven region is estimated to be at least 940 million euros per year. The sector therefore contributes 4% to the total economic value, of which a large part will be taken for account by the business community in Eindhoven.
Eindhoven is considered a design city pur sang, especially due to the location of the internationally renowned Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) and the well-attended Dutch Design Week (DDW). It is mentioned with European design cities such as Milan, Bilbao and Helsinki. That’s all well and good, but is design really that important for the future of the city? Yes, answer the compilers of the vision. After all: “Everything around us is designed”.

According to the research agency Dialogic, the emphasis should be on retaining talent and strengthening the design ecosystem, so that designers become more and better involved in strategic work for, for example, the Municipality, the business community, knowledge institutions, social organisations and start-ups. The agency refers to the lever-
age of designers in multi-disciplinary teams and organisations. Nowhere is this effect as great as where technology and design come together.
“However, the value of design goes much further than the number of workplaces and the direct economic value,” states Design Vision. “A strong Eindhoven design ecosystem needs physical places to live, work and meet”. She refers to the breeding grounds in the city, such as Strijp-S, -T and -R, Section-C, Plan-B, and NRE, for young talents, students, and alumni, where design is present, visible, and active. She calls the vision a vital link and essential for the development of designers. But these ‘rough’, creative places are in danger of disappearing due to ‘commercialisation’ by project developers. To compete ‘with the rest of the world’, they must be preserved, otherwise there is a risk of exodus and the ecosystem in the city crumbling, the vision argues.
“Eindhoven is rightly proud of its design sector and equally proud of its special technology sector. At the same time, the challenges that Eindhoven faces when it comes to a future-proof, liveable city in which everyone can participate are great. The most innovative human city requires us to pull out all the stops. What is technologically possible and how do we make it impactful through good design? This requires active connection,” say the designers. n

Music gives me memories. My favourite places to listen and experience music are In to the Great Wide Open on Vlieland and Oerol Festival on Terschelling. In our Atelier we often play classical music, mainly as background music. Music really does something to me; It makes me extremely happy and makes me feel like dancing. Recently I had a party in the middle of the meadow, a Silent Disco. The environment, the music, dancing in the open air; this scene was so truly amazing.
Now Igge is 1 year old, I walk to so many places. I prefer to go to the Genneper Parken. My infatuation with this park started during Corona. A walk is never the same, nature changes and by looking around I see the beauty of nature more and more. In 2017 we did a project with Tom van Duren, we did a tour, I am so happy I learned to recognize the trees and other species in nature.
TimelessTime at MU Hybrid Art House has a new exhibition, I will definitely visit this one. During DDW it is not always possible for me to wander around Strijp and the city. These days you will mainly find me in our AtelierNL in the Bergmann Kerk.
Hybrid Art House is such a special place, I love coming here. The themes they show are relevant, they offer a broad, surprising spectrum represented in dynamic exhibitions, like their new expo TimelessTime. Unique and inclusive MU addressed gender differences early on. Artists come to MU from all over the world. I think a lot of people don’t even realize that the whole world in all its diversity comes to MU

Everyday life makes me happy, the little moments that I experience together with Igge. Like when Igge plays just on one square meter: that is enjoyment, enjoying the moment, of nothing. Or when sitting on the grass and chatting with my friends for hours. I enjoy unexpected encounters with neighbors and friends, these are my happy moments.
‘Yes, films and preferably with company. Idfa, feel-good movies; As I can get lost in a movie, I intent to find it very exciting. I prefer films that dare to tell something further. And I pay attention to how it is filmed, that can really make a film beautiful. In ‘The Hours’ they take you on an intriguing journey through the lives of three women in different eras. The way this film explores the complexity of human relationships and the search for identity, I find both moving and inspiring.
My big favourite is Residence of the People in Kerkstraat. There I thoroughly enjoy Waew’s delicious Thai dishes, a true delight! I enjoy their unique atmosphere en truly enjoy some guilty pleasures – like their home-made fries and snacks, made with local products, these are simply irresistible.
For the first time since the pandemic, I am back in China on a business trip. Together with my colleague we are visiting Beijing, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Shanghai. We are speaking to customers and business contacts. My colleague has noticed that he is really helpless in terms of technology without “WeChat”. All apps on your phone in one app; this is all possible via “WeChat”. What also has struck my colleague is how well-informed and open-minded Beijing taxi drivers are about the country’s challenges. Everyone is satisfied with what China has achieved so far, but remain critical of the major challenges China faces. Corruption is being tackled, particularly hard in the real estate sector, healthcare and education. People are also striving to improve China’s image on the world stage and are wondering how they can contribute to this. These are signs to me that China is doing well.
In recent years, China has transformed itself into a world power in the technological sector, and it feels to me as if the Netherlands is in danger of falling one step behind every day. We must listen to the warning from ASML’s CEO, Wennink. He states that we must avoid becoming “fat, dumb and happy”.
It is high time that the Netherlands takes a page from China’s manual and embraces technological innovation to stimulate the economy and improve society, while taking into account our need for freedom and our ethical norms and values. China is known for its ambitious technology development plans, such as the “Made in China 2025” initiative, which aims to strengthen China’s technology sector and promote innovation. The Netherlands can also learn from the investments in research and development that China has made in recent years, which have made the country a world leader in innovation. With countless incubators, funding opportunities and government support, China has created a thriving startup ecosystem.
While China has made great progress in digitalization in recent years, the Netherlands can learn from the way China has embraced digital technology to improve efficiency in the public sector. Using digital platforms and services can help streamline government processes and provide better services to citizens.
On the other hand, China can also learn from the Netherlands in terms of a strong social safety net and a well-developed healthcare system. With its anti-corruption campaigns, China is trying to achieve this, and in my opinion it is only a matter of time.
In short, the Netherlands inspires China, but China can also inspire the Netherlands when it comes to the use of technology for economic growth and social development.
Jin ChenMiriam van der Lubbe has been involved with the Dutch Design Foundation (DDF) for years, since February 2022 as Creative Head Dutch Design Week. She sees that there is a shift from ‘Author Design’ to ‘Strategic Design’ and ‘Design Thinking’. What does this mean for designers and their relationship with companies, governments, and social organizations, and how does DDF respond to this development?
After studying at the Design Academy, Eindhoven and the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam, Van der Lubbe made her mark with the Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe design studio, which she founded in 1998 with Niels van Eijk. Two decades ago, she, together with other design icons, founded Dutch Design Week (DDW), an event that has now grown into a world-leading design festival, and which, together with the related Dutch Design Foundation (DDF), educates the design community all year round. Since February 2022, Van der Lubbe has been responsible for the implementation of the DDW programme as Creative Head of Dutch Design Week. In her career, which now spans more than a quarter of a century, she has seen how the design world has changed.
‘We believe in the ability of designers to make the world a better place’TEXT: BART ASSIES, HANNEKE VAN DEN NIEUWENHOF PHOTOGRAPHY: FREEKJE GROENEMANS DESIGN THINKING
“In the 1990s, the emphasis for us was still on ‘author’s designs’, where the designer had a great deal of autonomy. That has now changed: strategic design has become much more important.” It is a development that Van der Lubbe wholeheartedly supports. “Over the years I have also shifted my focus to strategic design, to spatial assignments and concepts. More than ever, as a design community, we are busy shaping the future and trying to contribute to a better world.” It is a way of working that involves a much broader group of people. “It is often an iterative process, a process of looking at, questioning, illuminating, researching... The question of a client, whether it is a company, a cultural organization, or the government, is defined very precisely. This is where a designer can play a crucial role with his or her creative input.” In an iterative development process, users, experts, and other stakeholders work together to solve complex issues. They provide input into creating, testing, and revising a design until they are satisfied with the end result. This method is also called ‘Design Thinking’.
is celebrated. We also organize various programmes, such as the World Design Embassies, What if Lab and Eindhoven Design District, which run all year round. We work closely with the Design Academy, but the Academy of course has its own policy, and this also applies to other partners here in the region, such as the Eindhoven Municipality and the Brainport organization.”
Eindhoven is on the eve of major changes and challenges. Just take the fact that about 70,000 houses must be built in the near future. How do you shape a city in the future, what will society look like? What are the consequences for the ecosystem? These are all inter-related issues in which designers can play a leading role. Van der Lubbe therefore emphasizes how important Design Thinking, and therefore involving designers in the development of large projects and concepts, is – not only for the business community, but for society as a whole. “More than ever, as a community, we are busy shaping the future and trying to contribute to a better world. Design Thinking ensures that creative ideas are heard and that the largest possible group of people is truly involved and heard.” n
According to Van der Lubbe, Design Thinking helps companies and organizations to grow and innovate. Because a much larger group of people than before is involved in the design process, interest is also much greater. “It’s about involvement and ownership. The assignments we face are large and complex, and it is therefore important that solutions are widely supported.” DDF can play an important role here by building a bridge between designers and society. “We have set ourselves the following three tasks: firstly, we ensure that we know very well what is going on in society and where designers can be deployed to address problems and, if possible, contribute to the solution. That is why we maintain a wide branched network of companies, knowledge institutions and policymakers, among others. And, finally, we ensure connections between stakeholders. It’s about the potential of creativity and we want to contribute to that by linking the right audience to the right designer. Matching is extremely important.”
Of course, DDW plays an important role in this as always, but there is more. Throughout the year, DDF organizes programmes, events, exhibitions, etcetera where young designers are offered a platform to share ideas. Van der Lubbe: “We believe in the problem-solving ability of designers to make the world a better place. DDF therefore offers designers opportunities, support, publicity, and a platform. DDW is a flywheel, a driver of that development by matching, inspiring, conducting the debate, and being the starting point for development. One time in the year where the entire field comes together, and design

PARKTHEATER EINDHOVEN • 19:00 H • OPERA
Following the success of Die tote Stadt, Nederlandse Reisopera brings another opera by Enrich Wolfgang Korngold. The lead is interpreted by the international renowned Dutch soprano Annemarie Kremer. Korngold’s fourth opera, Das Wunder der Heliane, was undoubtedly his most ambitious project. The libretto seems a bit bizarre, you have to see it through the eyes of the 1920s. It is a fiercely symbolic story, entirely in the spirit of the Interbellum, captured by Korngold in decadent and reveling music.
The mysterious, unearthly, supernatural, the divine, the magnified emotions and the undisguised eroticism: it all fits in that time. Also, the spirit of sacrifice and the motto that love conquers all: if not now, then in the hereafter.

JAN HULST & DAAN HEERMA VAN VOSS • THEATER BELLEVUE • THEATER OOSTPOOLA son has one night to do justice to his late father by writing the funeral speech only he can write, the truth about his father, whose death by suicide has been shrouded in rumour and gossip.
About a night when a funeral speech had to be written and a best friend helped write it. A terribly precious night. Three years ago, Jan Hulst and Daan Heerma van Voss got plastered. The gin flowed; the seriousness increased. They talked about the things that really matter: declarations of love and farewell letters. Hulst told him about his mother’s death. It was one of the most horrible nights of his life, but also one of the most precious. Never has a friendship been so sincere and valuable. Heerma van Voss said that Hulst should make a play out of it. Hulst replied: “you should do it”. So, it happened. It is a unique, intimate collaboration. A play about friendship, lives that pass, love that lasts, and the words we choose when we really don’t know what to say.

Danny soon turns out not to be the sweet boy from the summer, but a member of the T-Birds who mainly wants to appear tough around his friends. Sweet Sandy tries to change too and joins the Pink Ladies. A dance competition is supposed to bring the two lovers back together, but for how long? Will they survive the trials of teenage life and find true love again?
It will be a party for young and old with a cast of 24 talents, a live orchestra and, of course, all the hits. You don’t want to miss this show. Come and experience it live in the Parktheater. Let’s go together!
Lehman Trilogy has caused a furore on the West End and Broadway in recent years. Directed by Guy Cassiers, ITA is presenting this unparalleled 150-year story in the Dutch language for the first time.
In the middle of the 19th Century, three Jewish brothers emigrate from Bavaria to America. In the Deep South they start a small fabric shop and become wealthy in the cotton trade. Their family business develops into a dizzying financial empire that is handed down from generation to generation. In 2008 it is jointly responsible for the financial and banking crisis. This is how Lehman Brothers self-destructs. With this Trilogy, the Italian author Massini not only wrote the story of a family, but also the history of ruthless American capitalism. Slavery and industrialization, war, and new technological developments: whatever happens in America and even globally, the Lehmans always know how to make good money out of it. Everything they plan to do – including getting married and having children – is tested in advance against the question: what will it yield?

THERAPY?, TRAMHAUS & BLACK BOX REVELATION ET AL.
This year’s festival season is coming to an end, but the show must go on! Come As You Are focuses on 30 years of guitar music; from the grunge of the early 90s and danceable Britpop to the energetic punk and powerpop of today.
Therapy?, Black Box Revelation, Claw Boys Claw, Paceshifters, Demob Happy, Them Two – The GOTCHA! Crew, Hideous and La Grunge have been announced previously. With the additions of Tramhaus, Ross Curry, Cloud Cafe, Mayleaf, and Café Acoustics - three acoustic solo performances by frontman Remi (Green Lizard), Simone (Cords) and The Lowest Standard - the line-up is now complete.
TOP CHOIR SINGS PÄRT & RACHMANINOV
Everyone knows: if you want to hear a top performance by Arvo Pärt, you need the Latvian Radio Choir. The experts par excellence, these singers, for this specific repertoire.
But Latvian wouldn’t be Latvian if they weren’t simply an internationally renowned top choir. They sing everything as experts, so in addition to the work of Arvo Pärt, they also sing Sergei Rachmaninov’s beautiful Vespers. Technically a very difficult piece for a choir, but the Latvian Radio Choir does not turn its back on this either. Fan of vocal music? Then you shouldn’t miss this!

Wodan Boys
Wodan Boys is Mikkie B Wessels, Thomas van der Want, Timo Prins and Olivier Lucas (who we already know as the drummer from Son Mieux). The 4 boys from The Hague released their very first EP Wodan Boys I in 2021. Last year they released their second EP Wodan Boys II and this year they treated us with their third EP Wodan Boys III.
How do they describe their sound? “Energetic noisy rock music, that’s what it’s all about. Balancing on a thin line between chaotic violent guitars and brutal melodic hooks.” The catchy indie punk of these guys from The Hague is catchy, danceable and mosh pit worthy. All these elements together guarantee a fantastic evening!

As a “wunderkind”, a child prodigy, Turkish master pianist Fazil Say has also developed into one of today’s world leading composers. Dancing, oriental rhythms, a continuous pulse and a wealth of melodic ideas that can often be traced back to the folk music of his homeland, Turkey.
Add some jazzy swing and this is the accessible, compelling style in which Say has now written more than 100 successful works. This time, together with cellist Jamal Aliyev, he will play a programme with works by Cesar Franck and himself. An adventurous evening!

Dutch spoken music, with a spicy Mexican pepper. Joris Linssen has been storming the stages with his semi-acoustic band Caramba for 20 years.
These born musicians are known for their powerful playing, infectious enthusiasm and a good dose of courage. For example, they went to Mexico and performed for 20,000 people in a stadium. And they went on a pilgrimage for a TV series, earning food and shelter with their music. The five amigos do 100 shows a year and play every performance as if their lives depend on it. A concert by Joris Linssen & Caramba is a true experience, full of enthusiasm, interaction with the audience, beautiful stories, and passionate musicians. Caramba is an adventure, seeing is believing!
This special edition of Seasoning is hosted during Dutch Design Week and within the framework of our European project “Future Repair Machine”. Special too, because United Cowboys is celebrating their 30th Anniversary this year and we are marking this with special programmes. An exhibition, a musical installation, a monumental statue of United Cowboys and special guests. We look forward to autumn…!
About Seasoning: At every turn of the year, United Cowboys invites you to witness developments in the field of live art. We open our doors to local, national, and international guests to showcase their new work and research. The upcoming edition, “Seasoning Fall”, will once again bring a programme of new work in development, which we place in an international context of performances that we select from an open call. An artistic dialogue with dance, music, performance, and image. We take you to different places in the Art House; an evening that stimulates all the senses.
The Seasoning program is curated by the artistic team of United Cowboys: Maarten van der Put and Pauline Roelants and from 20th October we will introduce our guests on www.unitedcowboys.net and on the Facebook page United-C.
The complex experience of time and timelessness, lack of time and eternal value is central to TIMELESSTIME by MAISON the FAUX. Do we lose or gain time as the years pass? Is our mortality nipping at our heels or do we just think so? Does physical deterioration only make us vulnerable and fearful of death or is this the driving force to create, philosophize, believe, destroy...?
MAISON the FAUX investigates these questions with the meandering total installation TIMELESSTIME in which performers bring the scenes to life at regular intervals. Like a story ride, without beginning or end, the audience is sucked into a timeless experience of creation and decay. Experience how time influences the essence of makership and what is made. Everything changes with the ticking of time, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, while matter and the maker themselves undeniably change along with it.
Performances on Friday, 22 & 29 September. 6 & 13 October. 3, 10, 17 & 24 November. Between 16.00– 19.00hrs.
During DDW23 the performances are on Saturday 21, Sunday 22, Wednesday 25, Friday 27, Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 October, from 14.00 to 17.00hrs.
Going to the Woenselse Markt on Saturdays is a delightful example of inclusiveness. Here you can meet families, groups of kids, senior citizens, and all types and kinds of people, from locals to internationals, including curious tourists. The peculiarity of this iconic multi-ethnic market makes it unique. You don’t go to this market just to shop and do business. For many people, it is a weekly ritual. They walk around the stalls and chat with the various vendors. Some taste raw herring, munch on a kebab, and some taste the fruit on display. The charm of the local markets is unique.
ThThe Woenselse Markt is a large triangular square on the northern side of the centre of Eindhoven, built in 1906. When five municipalities, including Woensel, were added to Eindhoven in 1920, street names had to be changed since many street names occurred more than once in the merged municipality. Since a Market already existed in Eindhoven, the name was dropped. Around 1934, the title Woenselse Markt came into vogue and became official soon after. Over a hundred years later, the square is a weekly market area; with more than 160 stalls, it is one of the largest commodity markets in North Brabant. You can find just about anything. In addition to products such as vegetables, fruit, bread, and cheese, there are also all sorts of clothing, flowers, and much more.
The Woenselse Markt attracts thousands of people and is becoming a tourist hotspot. The square was outdated in the past, so a complete refurbishment was necessary. The municipality set up a particular sounding board group at an early stage so that today, it can be accessed comfortably on wheels, by bicycle, or in a wheelchair. The space has become a symbol of inclusiveness from a structural point of view, too.
When entering the markets, we easily made contact with entrepreneurs, who proved very kind and helpful.
While he chats and lets his customers taste his delicacies, Sharon Malawi of Tasty Mediterranean Tapenade tells us his story. “I’m from Iraq, I was born in Tehran, and I was two and a half when I moved to The Netherlands. The business is my father’s, I help him at the weekend, I’m very proud of what we do”. Its colourful tapenades are a rainbow of flavours, from classic hummus to variations based on cream cheese, feta, and lots of spices and herbs. “For 10 years, we made our own cream cheese and created different tastes. I love to ask the opinion of my clients, to listen to what they like most and what they want. Our relationship is ‘amicaal’, a Dutch world that I love: it means chummy, amicable”.
Worldwide weekly markets promote the identity of a locality by building a sense of belonging for residents and integrating local initiatives into a single whole, while increasing the city’s attractiveness.
WOENSELSE MARKT
Every Saturday from 10 .00 - 17.00h
Adress: Woenselse Markt 5612 CP Eindhoven
Nadine Welten-van den Heuvel from Groenteen Fruithandel Welten-van den Heuvel tells us a family story celebrating 70 years of activity this year.
”Here, I love the contact with people. I listen to their problems and happy news, and it is possible to create very intense connections. Every week is different, always a surprise how the day turns out. We have a mix of customers, mainly internationals. I speak in English with most of them”. Thanks to requests from new customers, the range on offer has expanded.
”In the last years, we have started to have papaya, passion fruit, and other specialties for connoisseurs.”
Every week is different, always a surprise how the day turns out
The offer is varied and has become wider also for the fish market, as says Nick Van Baker from Vishandel Van Bakel
”We are in the fifth generation in this market. Our customers in recent years have become a mix of ethnic groups: Dutch, Asians, Africans, South Americans, Surinamese, and Europeans. In the last years, we have started to offer different fish, following all the requests from our international clients. So that we can satisfy both the locals and the new incomers, we sell many products that come from Africa and Asia. Every day, at the end of the day, we are sold out.”. Despite the hard work, he loves the Woenselse Markt in particular: ”Because we are a community, we have all known each other for years.”
Confirmation also comes from the florist Danny van de Kerkhof of Magendans Flowers
”Mine has been a family business for almost 20 years”. There are flowers of all types on a stall that makes you happy to look at. Seeing him create different bouquets for each request is a pleasure. ”People here are delighted. They look for seasonal flowers and bouquets for special occasions. I love to choose the flowers
following what they like in colour and budget, listening to their stories, not only to satisfy their requests.”
This attention to the customer happens because the atmosphere here is more human, especially compared to supermarkets or chain shops. The service is detailed, loud, fun, and fraternal. The closeness between buyers and entrepreneurs is real, sometimes genuinely profound. Even when there is a large crowd and few are in a hurry, there is always a moment to smile, ask how things are going, and tell each other the latest news. n
‘Because we are a community, we all know each other for years’
Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), two deeply connected childhood friends, are torn apart when Nora’s family emigrates to Canada from South Korea.
Twelve years later, Nora is studying in New York and the two reunite through the internet. They fantasise about a reunion, but the distance dilutes the contact. Twelve years later, Nora is now married and reunites with her childhood sweetheart during a defining week when he visits her in New York. In her debut film, playwright Celine Song explores notions of fate, love, and the thin line separating the life we lead from the life it could have been.
MARTIN SCORSESE
Based on David Grann’s critically acclaimed bestseller, is set in 1920s Oklahoma and centres on the serial murders of members of the oil-rich Osage Nation, a series of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the discovery of oil suddenly made the Indians of the Osage Nation one of the wealthiest peoples in the world. Their wealth immediately attracted white profiteers who, through manipulation, extortion, and theft, squeezed as much money as possible from the Osage and then killed them. Based on a true story told through the unlikely romance between Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), This film is a gripping crime saga where true love crosses paths with vile betrayal. Killers of the Flower Moon also stars Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons.

THU
• JUSTINE TRIET
After the death of her husband, a writer must prove her innocence.
Anatomy of a Fall is an impressive mix of love and courtroom drama that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Anatomy of a Fall received the Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Sandra, Samuel, and their visually impaired son Daniel have been living in a remote chalet in the French Alps for a year now. When Samuel is found dead under suspicious circumstances, Sandra is charged. Was his fall a fateful accident, suicide or was he pushed by his wife? In the court case that follows, their relationship is dissected in the most painful details.
THU 26 OCTOBER
This is the new film from the makers of Intouchables and Hors Normes. Comical, heartwarming, and hopeful. Albert (Pio Marmaï) and Bruno (Jonathan Cohen) are up to their necks in debt and try to survive through trickery and deceit.
A group of environmentalists offers them free drinks and, unintentionally, new opportunities. Led by Valentine (Noémie Merlant), they try to hold up a mirror to the world with playful actions. Albert and Bruno get carried away. Valentine has no place in her existence for love, after all, the world continues to rage. But then she doesn’t know Albert yet. Une Année difficile is another striking and light-hearted film by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano. Noémie Merlant, Pio Marmaï, Jonathan Cohen and Mathieu Amalric pop off the screen and get plenty of opportunity to showcase their comedic talents.

Is a chair still a chair if it is exhibited in a museum, and you’re not allowed to sit on it? Maker, place, and context: they determine the meaning of an object. The exhibition The space between us questions the function of design and the role of the museum.
This Dutch Design Week exhibition challenges you not only to look, but also to participate. Start interacting with the works you see, the spaces in which they are located and the visitors you encounter. In cooperation with Embassy of Inclusive Society.
FROM 21 UNTIL 29 OCTOBER
During Dutch Design Week, Manifestations presents promising artists of the future for the eighth time in a row. This interactive experience presents you with new realities. There is a physical and virtual program with challenging and futuristic work by more than fifty artists.
Manifestations once again brings a confrontational but, above all, disruptive adventure full of future perspectives.
This year’s theme is VISION - Think Bigger, because these times requires us, more than ever, to think beyond individual interests. We live in a time when we can make so many choices. We challenge you to put aside fears, ignore distracting stimuli, and think about making smarter choices.
Go to the website and sign up for the newsletter and social media for all our events and a fun tour. www.manifestations.nl
Welcome to The House of Queer Joy! This colourful tent by Tadhg Read is a celebration of the joy of queerness. Read asks themself: how do you take space and give it to people from the LGBTQIA+ community? The work is part of the exhibition The space between us.
A patchwork of personal quotes forms the walls of the tent. They are visitors’ answers to questions like: what does queer space mean to you? And what would you like such a space to look like? During the exhibition, the tent continues to grow. On Saturday 14 October, you can see Read and add new rags to this safe space
Man and nature, city and landscape: in her work, designer Annelies Hermsen focusses on the tension between these concepts. For the Van Abbemuseum display case take-over, she chose three works on the intersection of man and meat industry.
In this pop-up presentation, you can see the works Les animeaux de la ferme (1974) by Marcel Broodthaers, Generic Corner (2015) by Maryam Jafri and the Belinda Cow-Bench (2005) by Julia Lohmann. With this selection, Hermsen reflects on the role of the cow in the food industry. You can visit the display case for free at the Van der Valk Hotel, Aalsterweg 322, Eindhoven.
In the first exhibition of the new season, the gallery exhibits art by three painters.
The work of the artists appears to have little in common. But there are similarities. It is figurative and challenging and it gives a fresh look to contemporary painting. But most of all, the work offers the viewer a moment of uninhibited wonder.

In Doe eens lief we practice the art of being sweet. With few words and a lot of climbing, falling, drawing, arguing, dancing, and colliding. How do you argue with your favourite stuffed animal? Are monsters sometimes sad? How do you catch a dot? When do you say sorry? Can you love a monster? And how do you dance when your anger is in your legs?
Doe eens lief is a cheeky, visual, and physical ode to practicing being sweet. Two players create together, on the spot, a world full of petty quarrels and big attempts at making amends. In a white setting, they bring animations to life. They draw a dot, a mosquito, a boat, a dream, a monster, or an endless sea. As fast as they run and stumble, the world they made is gone too. To then create a new world in which they can disappear.

In high school, I already thought it was a nice concept. Our history teacher talked about it with a lot of passion. The term ‘melting pot’ came from America and meant the merging of cultures based on the idea that the immigrants who were lucky enough to become Americans adapted to American culture in order to live happily ever after. At least that was my perception as a teenage scholar.
I wonder if Eindhoven isn’t also a great example of a ‘melting pot’? It soon became clear to me that the Dutch translation ‘melting pot’ means something else, namely ‘a refractory pot for melting metals’. According to the English definition, ‘a melting pot occurs in a multi-cultural society when the ethnic minority mixes with the main culture of the country’. An urban melting pot is ‘a source of creativity, economic potential and social cohesion’.
In our language school alone we have ninety nationalities, in Eindhoven and the surrounding area there are more than 120. Our city is a cultural magnet that attracts visitors from all over the world to events such as GLOW and the Dutch Design Week. International students visit the Technical University and the Design Academy. Or take Strijp-S, the creative heart of the city, with the mix of cultures that live and work there. The former Philips factories that were built here in the 1920s now serve as a special backdrop full of homes and activity.
The city’s economic potential had its origins at the end of the 19th Century with two brothers who started a light bulb factory and expanded it into a mega concern, making their family name, Philips, a global brand. To realize Philips’ enormous growth, ‘guest workers’ were quickly attracted, such as glass blowers from Austria or the people of Drenthe, followed by Spaniards, Turks and other world citizens who saw economic opportunities in the high-tech ‘boomtown’ Eindhoven. About 130 years later, Philips spin-off ASML attracts plenty worldwide talent.
An important ingredient of the melting pot is social cohesion. What about that? At the time of Philips, this was put into practice unprecedentedly through the company’s social policy. The well-being of the employees, solidarity, connection, and development weighed heavily. Housing was provided, such as in Philipsdorp and Drenthe village, for study grants, medical facilities, sports clubs (PSV!), for pensions, shopping facilities (Etos) and there was even an orchard to provide employees with healthy food (Philips Fruittuin). Connection is of course not only the responsibility of the business community, but also of the Municipality and the people of Eindhoven themselves.
Is Eindhoven a melting pot of cultures and connections? I think so. The city has been a ‘melting pot’ for at least a century, in which internationals live together with Dutch people, but still retain their own identity. But isn’t it great to see how all those different cultures relate to each other here and together make Eindhoven, Eindhoven?

How do designs find their way into the Brainport region and into the manufacturing industry, and what do Brainport residents notice about this? Mikrocentrum has a clear vision.
Mikrocentrum has been around for 55 years. This organization, which connects hightech and manufacturing industries, is an education centre, a meeting place, an innovation accelerator, and programme maker. By bringing networks together, they can exchange ideas, inspiration, and knowledge. Mikrocentrum can ensure that its hundreds of members, customers and partners achieve more when working together. And that is exactly what makes Brainport so strong, General Manager Bert-Jan Woertman and High Tech Platform manager Maarten Roos, confirm. During the organization of trade fairs, in its own training courses and in the business network with more than 550 companies, Mikrocentrum sees a lot of innovation, Maarten explains: “In the Netherlands and Belgium, with a focus on Brainport. There’s just a lot going on here.”
G100
Bert-Jan is certain: “Design and manufacturing industries can add a lot of value to each other, but they do not always know where to find each other. With the G100 Award during the DDW, we intend to bring them together, that is a step towards realising that added value.”
Maarten is involved in the G100 on behalf of Mikrocentrum: “Together with the independent DesignLink foundation, which previously awarded Good Industrial Design Recognitions (GIO), now the G100. That is a list of a hundred innovations – in no particular order, so no top 100 – in which design is particularly present. We actively involve our networks in compiling the G100. This way we get attention for design among high-tech companies.”
Is that necessary then? Maarten: “In a lot of high-tech, aesthetics or ergonomics are not the primary focus. While those can be themes in designs. The great thing is the working methods and ways of thinking of designers. In high-tech they focus much more on the process. Designers can look at processes from a distance, from
a manufacturing process to a machine, and can zoom out. They then point out fundamental issues that the manufacturing company often does not think about or take the time for, because it focuses so much on the technology. Such a collaboration is wonderful. For example, innovations in the field of sustainability and circularity are being released. Why are fourteen different materials glued together so that they can never be separated? Such a machine is also finite. I see developments in this. You can look at improving circularity and sustainability at product level, but also at a higher process level; what do you do, why and where is the big profit? Perhaps the profit does not lie in recycling bags, but in organizing flows of goods differently. Sustainability also influences people; As an organization you involve people in this, they are involved in processes. The designer can be the connecting factor in this.”
You must develop a whole process around this to ensure that people want, can and will do it. They must be motivated to do it and it must be easy to do. It is precisely there that you see a rapprochement between design and technology; design a solution that can easily get things moving. I don’t even want to call it the design and tech boxes, you shouldn’t treat them as separate worlds.
We have transitions and problems and challenges. It’s about people looking at things in different ways, inspiring each other to arrive at the best solution that is applied. Brainport is the laboratory for this, DDW the place where that design-tech love affair belongs.”
Maarten nods: “That has to be a fundamental choice. This should not be solved by companies that are solely profit-driven. Then, for example, you get electric cars with unique plugs, because then you can sell more plugs and charging stations. By thinking at system level, everyone has a standard plug and you can charge anywhere. These are design issues that hang over it. And it is precisely at the intersection of disciplines that innovations arise.” Bert-Jan: “If design and technology work well together, this leads to innovations with more impact.” n

And that leads to fun courtships and often good marriages that benefit everyone, says Bert-Jan: “If you pay attention to design in the development process, in time, you can simply make more profit. It’s a tough economic argument. Something has to work technically, but all aspects and the entire process surrounding it; this is where design and tech have found each other. That was not the case ten years ago.”
But now it is topical: “Technical innovation is one thing, but social innovation is just as important, if not more important. Look at behavioral change. We are in major transitions in health, energy, mobility, and nutrition. You can have technological solutions for this, but that does not mean that people will use them.
‘The solution is key by finding a balanced relationship between design and tech’
‘Technology is also becoming increasingly important for designers, as they are embracing AI’

“The world is changing. We are moving towards an economy that is sustainable and inclusive,” says Marc. “As a food and agri bank, we pay close attention to developments in society, food, energy, and construction. We help accelerate this. The Dutch Design Foundation is also concerned with these themes.“ Marianne adds: “You can only achieve these changes if science, designers, government and large organizations sit at the table together. So, we need Rabobank, and they need us.”
The collaboration between the Dutch Design Foundation and Rabobank is, for example, reflected in the Embassy of Food. “In this project, designers, farmers and companies research about the farm of the future. Where and how will we produce our food in the future? And what do we eat?” says Marianne. They do the same within the Embassy of Circular Biobased Building. “It’s about a sustainable way of building, with natural (bio-based) materials,” Marc explains. “Which can also result in new revenue models for farmers. After all, those materials must be grown somewhere, and banks also have to think about their products and services.”
What role does Rabobank take on? “The first thing people probably think of is securing financing. Yes, we do that too. We are the main partner of the Dutch Design Week and finance entrepreneurs who innovate and become more sustainable. But our role is more substantive than that.” The bank has plenty of knowledge in-house. “We have our own research department that, for example, conducts research into developments within the food industry. The data we collect in this way is a basis for a good conversation. In addition, thanks to our large network, we can connect designers and companies. Many designers find it difficult to make the step into the business world.”
However, not every designer immediately understands the choice to collaborate with Rabobank. And not the other way around. Marianne: “It is quite a surprising step. But you can only really change things together. This requires vulnerability on both sides, but also the ability to ask all questions. We have made sound agreements about this and, most importantly, we have the same goals in mind.”
The two think that designers play an important role in these types of transitions. They help you think outside the box and come up with creative ideas. “A way of thinking that makes us look differently,” says Marc. “Their imagination makes major changes much more conceivable and discussable.” Marianne agrees with this. “Designers ask questions in a different way than, for example, scientists. By talking to each other, we arrive at a shared vision of the future.”
Dutch Design Week presents work and concepts from more than 2,000 designers, spread over about 100 locations in Eindhoven. The collaboration between the Dutch Design Foundation and Rabobank is also reflected there. Also in the Embassy of Food and the Embassy of Circular & Biobased Building. Various meetings are organized in the Rabo House (on the 4th floor in the Klokgebouw), and in the middle of Strijp-S, on Ketelhuisplein, is the exploratory BURO MISO. This is a project by artist and artistic researcher Arne Hendriks, developed with support from Rabobank. The relationship between people and (the healing power of) miso is central. Miso is a fermented bean paste from Japan. Together with the public, BURO MISO investigates what role this can play in various transitions, such as protein and energy transition.
It is a collaboration that you might not expect, that between designers and a bank. Nevertheless, the Dutch Design Foundation and Rabobank are joining forces.
In a conversation between Marc Cootjans, Director of Cooperative Rabobank in East Brabant, and Marianne Aarnoudse, Head of Design Works of the Dutch Design Foundation, they explain why you need different insights and perspectives for change.
‘Designers ask questions in a different way than scientists’
Match for Impact is one of the Rabobank and the Dutch Design Foundation’s collaborative projects. The most promising initiatives from the creative sector are shared by Rabobank. Marianne: “Within the Dutch Design Foundation network we look for interesting projects that contribute to a better world. Experts from Rabobank and the design world discuss these with each other. At the same time, the designers are asked: how can we help you with your project? Consider drawing up a better business plan or getting in touch with a manufacturer. Rabobank then helps with this. Not only with financial support, but also by coaching and by sharing their knowledge and network.”
It is therefore not just a one-time thing if it is up to the two of them. Time to look ahead. Where will the partnership be in three years? “I hope that space has been created at Rabobank to work on issues in a design manner, and that we in the design world learn a lot more about how large organizations work.” Marc likes that. “It would be fantastic if this creative way of thinking became part of our work and that, as Rabobank, we can help the creative sector further. Not only with financing, but also by sharing our knowledge and network.” n
DUTCH DESIGN WEEK takes place every year in October: this year it is from 21 to 29 October.

Halloween is nearly here. While this international fright night is typically connected to the United States, its roots are an intriguing amalgamation of centuries old European traditions and cultures. For some people in the Netherlands, Halloween has become a welcome sight, but it has its detractors too. But not in Oirschot! The village has found it to be a uniting force for their community and has wholeheartedly embraced this foreign holiday. Let’s explore how one Dutch town has become the must-see destination for all things spooky.
The origins of Halloween date back 2,000 years to the Celtic Festival of Samhain. The festival marked the end of the summer and the seasonal change to the colder, darker months of winter. Just as spring is associated with renewal and life, winter is associated with the opposite - decay and death. Celts believed that the evening before their New Year (1 November) the boundary between the worlds of the living and dead blurred. This allowed the ghosts of the deceased to return to earth and walk amongst the living.
The Celts blamed the presence of these other world spirits for any misfortune, so naturally people would try to avoid them. They did this by wearing masks when leaving their homes after dark to fool the spirits into thinking they were spirits too. They would also leave bowls of food outside their homes to keep the sprits from entering.
Over the centuries, Samhain would be influenced by other religions and cultures such as the Romans and Christianity. The name would morph from All Hallows’ Eve to become the one we know today. Worldwide activities linked to Halloween now are mostly from the 20th Century American culture and consumerism.
Anne Marie Rossou is the Manager of Visit Oirschot. “We are responsible for marketing the Municipality of Oirschot. To achieve this, we work together with many parties, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders. Our goal is to keep Oirschot vital and attractive. One of the activities we organise for this purpose is Halloween.”
It started as a simple event for children, but nowadays, the event is quite a spectacle. Visitors walk along a predetermined route of about 3 to 3.5km where there are all kinds of surprises along the way. “People who live here
decorate their homes and houses; they make up acts together; they build whole constructions. There are also theatre and dance groups. And of course, we facilitate music, lighting effects, smoke effects, etc.” What particularly adds to the atmosphere is that everyone dresses up too. “Everyone gets in costume and dresses up. Not just in the clichéd Halloween things like zombies, but there is so much creativity.”
plaints about long queues, parking disputes, and litter in the past, but the good far outweighs the bad. Anne Marie: “Of course, every big event has an impact on residents. Complaints are part of the event, but we only get a few.” She says “communication is important” to overcoming that. That way everyone, both locals and visitors, know what to expect and can enjoy the event.
It takes a small army to make the event a success every year. “We have a small coordination group of five people but there are about 300 to 400 volunteers who work with us.”
Volunteers, like Ard Berben, and their sense of community spirit and pride are what keep the festivities going. Born and raised in Oirschot, Ard has been part of it since the very beginning. “A small group of enthusiasts decided to organise a Halloween tour in the centre of Oirschot. I agreed to participate, and never left.” For him, it’s a chance to do many things. “Halloween is ideal to make some creative things to scare or surprise people. Our group are all family members, so it is also a sort of family reunion. Each edition we also have a storyline which always has a link to the rich past of our town. So, it’s not only fun, but you actually learn something about your hometown.”
It’s not all fun and games though. Producing an event of this magnitude every year has its challenges as well. There have been com-
And as far as any cultural clash between Dutch culture and the importation of a foreign holiday like Halloween, there too Anne Marie doesn’t feel that’s the case. “Well, you always have people say, ‘Halloween? What’s that?’ But I think that all the residents here accept it. People really see it as a tradition, so they do embrace it. There are not that many critics.”
The uniqueness of Halloween is what drives its popularity and uptake, according to Anne Marie. “There are lot of festivals, but what you feel at Halloween, you don’t feel at any other festival. It’s a once-a-year event and people like to be scared.”
“When I look at the people here, I think they embrace it because it gives a lot of connection with everyone. It feels good to achieve such a big thing together with your neighbours, friends, and family. And you are rewarded, because you have more than 5,000 visitors who come to watch and experience it.” The festivities are not just enjoyed by Dutch or internationals who live nearby, but many visitors from Belgium and Germany come as well!

A purchasing period can be very hectic. Especially in these times, when homes change owners quickly. Are you curious about how we, as a purchasing agent, can really make a difference?
We asked Aroosa Aftab, one of our purchasing customers. Because her husband works for ASML, they moved to Eindhoven together. Read below how she experienced the purchasing process under the guidance of Debbie Mels Lommers Makelaars.
How did you experience the process of buying a house in Eindhoven?
My experience of buying a house in Eindhoven was both exciting and challenging. Exploring different neighborhoods and options in this vibrant city was a journey in itself. It was thrilling to find the perfect home that matched our preferences and budget. However, the process also had its moments of uncertainty, especially during making offers and waiting. Overall, it was a rewarding experience, and now that we’re settled in our new home, we couldn’t be happier with our decision.
Why did you choose to work with us as your buying agent?
I chose to work with Debbie Mels Lommers Makelaars as a buying agent because of their local expertise, time-saving capabilities, access to off-market properties, negotiation skills, objective advice, legal knowledge, cost-effectiveness, and the overall peace of mind they offer during this significant life decision. Their services add value and enhance the overall home-buying experience.
What expectations did you have before the process began?
Before the home-buying process began, I had several expectations: a clear understanding of my housing needs and budget, an extensive property search by the buying agent, regular and transparent communication, negotiation expertise to secure the best deal, legal guidance, efficiency in handling administrative tasks, protection of my interests, and ultimately, the peace of mind that comes from having a dedicated professional guide me through the complex process of buying a home in Eindhoven.
What aspects during the process surprised you, and why? Several aspects during the home-buying process surprised me. Firstly, I was taken aback by the intensity of the competition in Eindhoven’s housing market. Multiple offers and fast sales were the norm, requiring quick decision-making. Secondly, the condition of some properties was different from what online listings suggested, emphasizing the im
portance of thorough inspections. Additionally, bidding wars were unexpected, adding stress and uncertainty to the process. The invaluable local insights provided by my buying agent also surprised me, influencing my decisions significantly. Moreover, the complexity of paperwork and legal aspects underscored the importance of a knowledgeable buying agent. I had to be more flexible with my preferences and expectations, and the emotional rollercoaster of excitement and stress was more intense than I anticipated. Lastly, the variable timeline for finding the right property challenged my initial expectations of a quick process, highlighting the need for patience and expert guidance.
What aspect of our purchase assistance was the most valuable to you?
The most valuable aspect of your purchase assistance was undoubtedly the negotiation expertise provided by Debbie Mels Lommers Makelaars. In a competitive market like Eindhoven’s, your ability to navigate negotiations was instrumental in securing the best possible deal. You skillfully negotiated not only the price but also favorable terms and conditions in the purchase agreement. Your insights into market values and local conditions allowed me to make informed decisions, and your calm and professional approach during bidding wars and sensitive negotiations was reassuring. Ultimately, your negotiation skills saved me money and ensured that I entered into a real estate transaction with
confidence and peace of mind, making it the most valuable aspect of your assistance throughout the entire homebuying process.
Would you recommend expats looking for a home in Eindhoven to work with Debbie Mels Lommers Makelaars as their buying agent?
Certainly, I would highly recommend expats seeking a home in Eindhoven to collaborate with you as a buying agent. Navigating a foreign real estate market, especially one as dynamic as Eindhoven’s, can be challenging. Debbie Mels Lommers Makelaars not only offers local expertise, helping expats understand different neighborhoods and market trends, but also bridges language barriers, ensuring all documentation and negotiations are conducted accurately. Your negotiation skills and knowledge of the local market can lead to more favorable outcomes. Furthermore, the legal guidance you provide can be invaluable, given the complexities of purchasing property in a foreign country. Working with you as a buying agent not only streamlines the process but also provides expats with peace of mind and a higher likelihood of making a well-informed and successful investment in their new home.
