Acting Normal as the most unusual act

Welcome to the fifth issue of Eindless Magazine, your window into the dynamic world of Brainport Eindhoven and our changing society. While the world seems to be turned upside down by countless conflicts and issues, we often find ourselves preoccupied with seemingly trivial matters in our city. Maybe we should pause and consider, “Just act normal, that’s crazy enough,” as a common saying in Brabant. Eindless Magazine is here to take you on a journey through Eindhoven, where we shine a spotlight on the topics that matter. To welcome, to create the soft landing for travelers, friends and newcomers, to contemplate on the use of AI for a better world.

We aim to inspire, inform, and encourage you to take action or be carried along by the waves around us. This magazine is a platform for discussing the big questions and the small joys that shape our daily lives in this city and region. With explanatory stories, sincere interviews, and cheerful insights, we hope to mobilize society in Eindhoven. We invite you to explore, understand, and appreciate the stories of our city. Let’s make a difference together, while learning that sometimes ‘acting normal’ can be the most unusual act. Enjoy reading!

CARNIVAL IN THE AU T UMN

‘Lampegat op zunne (THIS SIMPLY DOESN’T TRANSLATE!) In Catholic countries, people celebrate ‘Carnival’

the carnival season starts on 11th November

to mark the beginning of Lent. Carnival literally

or just 11/11. In Eindhoven (‘Lampegat’) a new

means ‘goodbye meat’ and refers to the period

attempt is made to throw a big party all day long,

when diets were predominantly meat-based –

following in the footsteps of more traditional

‘meat rules’ (carne valere). In the region,

carnival cities such as Den Bosch and Maastricht.

Everywhere in the region, the carnival celebration kicks off on the ‘Elfde van de elfde’. In Eindhoven, ‘Elluf Elluf’ is being celebrated on a grand scale this year, according to Tim de Zeeuw, one of the organizers. “We have found a location on the Market - in consultation with GLOW - where we can continue to expand in the coming years. The intention is to celebrate “Elluf Elluf” in Eindhoven with ten thousand people in five years’ time.”

☞ ☞

There is an outdoor stage on the Markt and an indoor stage in M of the Muziekgebouw, formerly Mijnheer Frits, where brass bands and artists perform. Stadsprins Kachelaan and his entourage will be present all day. They attend various official events. The kick-off is at 3.11 pm on the Markt in Eindhoven, in the presence of the City Prince and his entourage. Traditionally, he also hits the first barrel, under the watchful eye of the ‘court brewer’, Bavaria. That is at 5.11 pm, followed by a performance by Eindhoven’s Dieter der Schlagersänger.

☞ ☞

Local heroes such as the Bockelullo’s, Luc Vaesen, Halve Soul, Dolle3s & the Tonys, Bolleke Pretvet and the Valse Kraaien will perform all day long

At 9.11 pm the renovated Lempke, specially made by the Lichtjesroute, will be lit. This previously happened at Stratumseind, but Carnival Association d’Haone has moved it to the Markt. After this, Vieze Jack will perform.

☞ ☞

Not unimportant is the announcement of the 2024 Carnival Motto! That happens at 11.11 p.m. Dansado & De Feestmeester, known from Wish Outdoor, close the holiday.

The Markt is not the only place in Eindhoven where ‘Elluf Elluf’ is celebrated. Naturally, the cafes on Stratumseind and the Eindhoven youth entertainment street are open all day. Café Wilhelmina on Wilhelminaplein even opens its doors at 11.11 am. Naturally, there will be music and the City Prince and brass band will also enter here.

In the Vibes Event Center, best known as the Beursgebouw, carnival goers can go to ‘Veurgloeien’. The free ‘Eleventh of the Eleventh’ party - dressing up required! – starts at 7 p.m. and is in The Main Hall. The line-up consists of Marco Schuitmaker, Jan Biggel, Ferry de Lits, Wilbert Pigmans, Gullie, Gebroeders Rossig, Schorre Chef & Mc Vals and Nickelbass. The party lasts until midnight. The Vibes Event Center is in Lardinoisstraat. Tickets at www.elfelfeindhoven.nl

kop op Elluf Elluf!’

Lampegat for dummies The carnival festival in Eindhoven grew, especially after the war, into the popular festival that it is today. The city has many carnival associations, but the festival is now mainly celebrated in the centre. During Carnival - in 2024 officially from Saturday 10th to Tuesday 13th February, although the Friday before Carnival is also fully celebrated in the city - large tents are placed on the various squares in the city centre. The name ‘Lampegat’ refers to Philips, where light bulbs were made a century ago. The well-known exclamation ‘Eindhoven the craziest’ is then corrupted into ‘Lampegat the craziest’. It has now been renamed ‘Lampegat op zunne kop’. The carnival colours of Lampegat are orange-blue (-orange). Eindhoven residents are Lampegatters or Lampegatterinnekes during carnival. On Saturday afternoon, after the arrival of the City Prince, the City Mayor hands over the key to the city to ‘His Thirsty Highness’ for four days. Lampegatters greet each other with ‘Salaai’, drink a lot of beer or the herbal bitter Schrobbelèr, eat Brabant sausage rolls (and fries!) or pea soup. They wear the most outrageous costumes (‘Couture Carnavalesque’) or a simple peasant smock and (long) coat that are plastered with City emblems, carnival associations, organisations, or parties they have attended. Proud Lampegatters always wear an orange-blue-orange scarf. The City Prince holds sway over Lampegat. He does this from his residence but is mainly out and about during carnival. You can encounter him anywhere, with his entourage in his wake: usually two aides-de-camp and two ladies-in-waiting. Not infrequently in the company of all kinds of ‘dignitaries’, including the Chief of Protocol, the Assessor, the First Citizen and the Police Officer, and preceded by Stadshofkapel De Eendracht. The most famous parties are the ‘Federation Ball’ (Saturday before carnival in the Parktheater), ‘Drie Uurkes Vurraf’ (on Friday afternoon

before carnival in the tent on Stadhuisplein) and the carnival parade through the city (on Saturday afternoon). For the rest, the party is on the streets and in the tents, where artists perform for five days - including Friday. The tents are located on the Markt, Wilhelminaplein, Stadhuisplein and in Tramstraat. It goes without saying that Stratumseind is a favourite place (especially for the youth) and there is a party every day in the various city centre cafes.

Mirjam van den Bogaard has served as a board member at Eindhoven Airport since 2017, and in her role as Chief Operations Officer, she oversees the airport’s daily operations. With nearly 15 years of experience working at the airport, which has grown in tandem with Brainport, she is well-versed in the challenges of ensuring regional success.

Dear readers, To many, Eindhoven Airport is their first encounter with the Brainport region, whether as a new resident or visitor. It’s understandable that we feel a sense of responsibility - even an obligation - to provide a welcoming atmosphere that goes beyond the boundaries of our arrival hall. In fact, we’ve been making considerable efforts to assist with the onboarding of internationals in our area for a number of years. This includes collaborating with associates who enhance the quality of life in our region, such as PSV, the Muziekgebouw, and events like GLOW. Taking things one step further involves cultivating an understanding of the significant role that every new arrival plays here. It’s not only knowledge workers who drive the regional economy, after all. The value chain supporting our high-tech, automotive, agro, and other sectors comprises many different hands from all over Europe. Every day, we

witness them arriving from nearly ninety different locations through these gates. We strive to customise our destinations to meet the requirements of our region. Although airlines retain autonomy over their flight network, we provide them with guidance and assistance informed by our insights from the Brainport region. We additionally urge them to operate their flights sustainably, utilising modern, environmentally friendly aircraft that produce minimal noise and pollution. Furthermore, we promote environmentally sound practices, including the deployment of quieter and more eco-friendly planes. The advantages are two-pronged: our destinations benefit our community while keeping our airport in harmony with a serene and comfortable living space.

People create the living enviroment, irrespective of their origins. Therefore, we are dedicated to fostering connectivity in a region brimming with prospects and solutions as we witness the impact of connectivity every day at the airport. Such as extending a warm embrace to those who set foot on Eindhoven land for the first time. Let’s work together to ensure their smooth acclimatization to their new home, workplace, and community, as their contributions will eventually shape our environment too.

IN THE NEWS

‘Tour Eindhoven’ Eindhoven is the first city in the Netherlands to have a 42 km walking, running and exercise route through the city. This will be expanded at a later stage. The route, with varying distances, is formed by a recognizable circuit of all kinds of routes through the neighbourhoods. The project aims to get residents, who would normally not find it easy to experience sports, moving. ‘Tour Eindhoven’ is very accessible and starts at everyone’s front door, so to speak.

Dine at Domes Dinner and drinks in front of St. Catherine Church? This will be possible in the coming months in the Thomas Eindhoven, Dinner Domes. In these transparent domes, heated and attractively lit, you can enjoy delicious dinners and cozy drinks with friends and family. The Dinner Domes are also the perfect place for company outings. NatLab tien jaar Natlab in Eindhoven has been around for ten years. In 2013, The film theater moved from Plaza Futura (on Leenderweg) to the former Philips Physics Laboratory (Natlab) building on Kastanjelaan, which was visited by the famous scientist Albert Einstein in 1923 - the year of its opening. You go to Natlab for the best films, theater, dance, exhibitions, lectures, and debates. You can have lunch, dinner, or drinks in the café-restaurant. There are rooms available to hire for (business) events, from small meetings to symposia and presentations for 200 to 250 guests. See www.natlab.nl

KNUPPELWEG (Corduroy road) IN THE CENTRE The Municipality is busy repaving the roads in the centre of Eindhoven. In the meantime, archaeologists are conducting research into the oldest city remains. They recently discovered a real thirteenthcentury corduroy road near St. Catherine’s Church. There used to be a dirt road here that was later reinforced with logs. “We see history repeating itself; About 700 years ago we were already working on themes such as accessibility to the city and ensuring proper drainage”, says Councilor Maes van Lanschot (Heritage).

abroad and came to our country as migrants. Many are - politically - refugees. Asylum seekers have recently been received in the centre of Eindhoven. Residents and entrepreneurs are not entirely happy with this. The objection is that they cause nuisance and a feeling of insecurity.. TEXT: HANS MATHEEUWSEN

E

very day, dozens of boats packed with refugees from North Africa reach the coasts of Italy and Greece. They leave poverty, war, and other misery behind them. Most move on to Northern Europe in search of a better future. The number of refugees applying for asylum in the Netherlands has increased significantly this year. The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) expects to need more than 77,000 beds by the end of this year. For comparison, at the end of 2021 there were still around 36,000. The search for (new) reception locations in the country is extremely difficult. Nobody wants a repeat of the rough sleepers in Ter Apel last summer, but an asylum seeker centre (AZC) in their “own backyard” seems much worse. The government has asked Eindhoven to take in 900 refugees. The municipality is cooperating with this: “We believe it is important to help provide good shelter for people seeking protection, and to ensure that they can immediately integrate in our city. We call that “living together from day one”. To ensure good and socially supported reception, the Municipality has started a study into the feelings of residents towards asylum seekers. The reactions under the announcement and invitation to participate on social media were clear. Eindhoven residents stated that the effect is already clear: nuisance, feeling of insecurity, rising crime, vandalism, and damage to the quality of life and enjoyment of living. The Municipality must first ensure sufficient living space for Eindhoven residents, was the gist. According to the Municipality, this is an extensive consultation. Ten thousand households, including those of refugees, in the city have received a letter in Dutch, English, Ukrainian and Arabic asking what it takes to live together, and what should the Municipality do to arrange this? The results are expected to be known at the end of November. They will be used to create and implement policies with the organizations involved in the city.

BEDS The COA accommodates unaccompanied minors (AMVs) for a year in two hotels next to each other in the centre of Eindhoven. They are managed as one location. Glow

accommodates 65 unaccompanied minors between the ages of fifteen and eighteen. These are young people who have a good chance of being allowed to stay in the Netherlands. Forty status holders are accommodated in Dirven, mainly (married) couples. They already have a permit to stay in the Netherlands. COA has positive experiences with combining these two groups of people. The adult status holders can share their experiences, exercise social control, and help to guide the young people. The municipality cooperated on the condition of good agreements regarding supervision, guidance, daytime activities, care, education, and safety. The COA has been forced to look for these types of temporary solutions to ensure that no unaccompanied minors or status holders are left without a bed and guidance. That is why agreements are made with hotels, for example. Combining the facilities of both hotels on the Keizersgracht has proven to be the best solution for all parties involved, say those involved.

CALL As the fifth largest city in the country and the central Municipality of Southeast Brabant, the Municipality believes it is important to contribute to humane reception for people seeking protection. Not everyone has the same opinion about this, partly based on experience. Residents in the city centre and entrepreneurs recently raised the alarm about nuisance in the

city, partly because of the temporary shelter on Keizersgracht. The asylum seekers disturb the proverbial peace by their presence. Women do not feel safe on the streets. Young people at Stratumseind prefer not to cycle home through the centre anymore. The municipality has installed cameras. The Municipality is currently looking at suitable locations for the regular reception of asylum seekers and status holders. In that context, COA has requested an expansion to the existing reception location at Kanaaldijk-Zuid. The Municipality is willing to cooperate in this and will decide on this soon. There are currently 96 people living there, mainly families. If the expansion goes ahead, other families will be added, but also singles or couples, for example. They will stay in the Netherlands and should feel at home here. n

Shelter in Southeast Brabant The need for shelters for asylum seekers in our country is great. Southeast Brabant initially took in 225 asylum seekers. After some fierce protests from local residents, they were first given shelter in Waalre and then in Best, Heeze, Deurne, Laarbeek, Bladel and Someren. That number was gradually increased to 450.

Nevertheless, the Kempen municipalities have already indicated that they can accommodate 150 asylum seekers, the Peel municipalities 800 to 1,000 and the Eindhoven Urban Area (Best, Eindhoven, Geldrop-Mierlo, Helmond, Nuenen, Oirschot, Son en Breugel, Veldhoven and Waalre) together 1,000 to 1,100.

However, Southeast Brabant was given a quota of 2,886 asylum seekers for 2023. Municipalities are working together on a regional shelter plan to prevent the government from imposing mandatory shelter through the so-called Distribution Act. In addition to reception places for asylum seekers, this plan also includes housing for Ukrainian refugees and status holders.

It is still unclear what the new locations will be. The municipalities are waiting to see whether the 1,500 places in the AZC in Budel will disappear by mid2024. Cranendonck is fed up with the persistent nuisance caused by so-called “safelanders” in particular. If this were to disappear in Budel, more than half of the required regional childcare places would disappear

That is not the case everywhere. Refugees can still count on empathy, but many residents would rather not accommodate asylum seekers in the area.

Dinner & Drinks

There’s a gem of a Greek restaurant called Lithos, with a diverse menu of Mediterranean delights. For a quicker option that offers delicious Greek street food, look no further than Saloniki Grillhouse. Funnily enough, it shares its name with our city. Whenever I go there, my choice is the mouth-watering gyros sandwich, with roast beef and topped with tzatziki sauce, a creamy yoghurt-based mixture. Trust me, it’s an absolute delight!

Walking around the city, enjoying the greenery on the outskirts of Eindhoven, Veldhoven, Waalre... is like a refreshing session of nature therapy. When it comes to city parks, Genneper Parken is our top choice. It has the perfect combination of tranquillity and urban vibe that we like the most.

Music

Immersing in arts

Visiting museums and immersing ourselves in the rich history of places is a passion of ours. Right here in Eindhoven, the preHistorisch Dorp offers an immersive experience, complete with old clothes and shoes. It’s great fun!

I really enjoy classical orchestras that blend their talents with rock music. It’s also great that there are concerts designed specifically for younger audiences, which makes the experience inclusive for families. Muziekgebouw Eindhoven’s programme offers such a diverse range of performances, which is really great. With my son I love to go to the concerts for a younger target group. In the free time of my husband he likes to play ‘bouzouki’, a Greek stringed instrument, where I love to listen to.

Festivals

Lately, I’ve been going more to big concerts like Roger Waters Pink Floyd at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. Or we visit rock festivals in nearby cities like Tilburg, Arnhem or in Belgium.

Georgia in november

In Veldhoven, don’t miss the European Philarmonia Chant’oer on November 4th at the Schalm Theater, featuring a Symphonic Tribute to ABBA’s 50th anniversary. Another must-see event is Eindhoven’s annual GLOW from November 11th to 18th. We will also visit Christmas markets in the Netherlands and Germany! In Maastricht, Aachen and Dusseldorf. This month is one of preparation and planning for a busy December with holiday festivities and here in my studio too.

Chinese dream In recent decades, I have witnessed a remarkable rise of Chinese companies on the global stage. From tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent to automakers such as BYD and Geely, as well as individuals, successful Chinese entrepreneurs who have left China to build new lives and businesses in the West. There are also plenty of companies that, due to the slow growth of the Chinese economy, need to generate more revenue outside of China. What does the future hold for these international Chinese entrepreneurs? What challenges await them, and what opportunities lie ahead? One of the most prominent challenges in this international arena is the lack of trust and concerns about their international image. I see this in our customers. While some Chinese brands have already gained recognition and a stable customer base internationally, concerns persist about the reliability of their products. To address these concerns, Chinese entrepreneurs must prioritize transparency, quality, and adherence to international standards. To gain the trust of consumers and partners, building and maintaining a positive image in terms of quality and integrity is crucial. Additionally, to succeed in the Western markets, it is important in the coming period to invest time and money in localization. Another challenge is the geopolitical tension between China and other world powers, especially the United States. It is of great importance that internationalizing Chinese entrepreneurs remain flexible and resilient. This may involve diversifying their supply chains and forming strategic partnerships in different parts of the world. A third challenge that Chinese entrepreneurs face is the need to continue innovating and evolving. Competition is extremely fierce, especially in the technology sector, where Chinese companies like Huawei and Xiaomi are competing globally for market share. To remain relevant, these companies must continue to invest in research and development and introduce new products and services that surpass consumer expectations.

COLUMN JIN

The

Another opportunity is to further expand the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ (BRI), an ambitious project aimed at creating trade routes and stimulating infrastructure development between China and other countries. Internationalizing Chinese companies can benefit from the growing demand for infrastructure, transportation, and energy solutions in BRI countries. Lastly, international HR management is vital for the future of Chinese entrepreneurs. Attracting and retaining talented employees, both locally and internationally, is essential for innovation and growth. This requires investments in training and development, as well as an open corporate culture that encourages diversity and creativity. This also means discovering a corporate culture that is embraced internationally, which, in my opinion, is one of the biggest challenges for traditional Chinese CEOs. In summary, the future is both extremely challenging and promising for international Chinese entrepreneurs. The “Chinese dream” of global influence and leadership remains within reach, but it requires an open mind and vision for traditional Chinese CEOs to realize. Only time will tell.

Jin Chen Head of European China Desk / Partner transfer pricing Crowe Foederer Accountancy

How can they achieve this? An intriguing opportunity for Chinese companies lies in promoting sustainability on an international level. Because China has committed to ambitious goals in the field of climate change and environmental protection, internationalizing Chinese companies can play a crucial role in achieving these objectives. The proactive government is paving the way for this, creating many new market opportunities.

FRESKU

In the first weekend of November, the four-day jazz festival So What’s Next takes place in Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. Remarkably, this night our own rap artist Fresku also features prominently in the line-up. Our curiosity is piqued. What can we expect from him during this 11th edition of So What’s Next? TEXT: CLAIRE VAN DER ELST | PHOTOGRAPHY: MINKE IJZER, GEKE BOSCH

Spoken word, cabaret, hip-hop; in all these, we think of you. But Fresku at a jazz festival? We didn’t immediately see that coming. Would you be able to guide me through your considerations/ reasons of why you are giving a concert on So What’s Next? “Just look at the family tree of music, and you’ll see that jazz andhip-hop are not very far apart. As a music movement, hip-hop is of course much younger. It is very popular and serves a large group of music lovers. The music is also less protected by, say, a Buma Stemra. For SoWhat’s Next, my bandleader Alexander van Popta and I want to make a crossoverhip-hop with jazz. For that, we need to precisely magnify. We want it to still be hip-hop and still be a Fresku show.” I understand that. But will it still be a jazz concert? “It is not my job to do jazz for real, I would be ashamed. But you can explore the edges: jazz and hip-hop, where do they meet? Actually, it’s a flirting with jazz, from which hopefully a nice show will emerge. Of course, this means I have to overcome my tendency towards perfectionism. Because the Muziekgebouw feels like a home base to me, I will put on a beautiful show. And often I then become strict with myself. But I increasingly realise that something is never quite finished. I just want to enjoy playing. On the contrary, I want to allow myself to make mistakes.” You will have to embrace discomfort on stage, is what you mean? “Definitely. People who come to the showcome, want to enjoy and be taken away. They want to experience a real moment, to see a moment of authenticity. I am by nature a very introvert person and standing on a stage, an unnatural place, works for me. It is difficult to explain, but the adrenaline I feel after coming off stage helps me to be more myself. That’s also the role of discomfort for us. By stepping out of your comfort zone, not feeling yourself for a while, you actually come closer to yourself afterwards.”

HIPHOP Everyone knows TupAc, Eminem, Jay Z. And after Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy, with his album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, the genre of hip-hop that emerged in New York’s rough neighbourhoods in the 1980s took flight to repulsive heights. In Eindhoven, language artist Roy Reymound is well known in the scene under the name Fresku. As a rapper, and since 2016 also as a cabaret artist. To So What’s Next in Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, Fresku will bring a live band, with whom he will mercilessly blend sounds and lyrics of his rap with the unpredictable outbursts of jazz.

On 2 November bassist Marcus Miller with a full-length concert, after which the festival will feature top notch musicians from the world of jazz, funk and soul on stage. For example, Ruben James and Montis, Goudsmit & Directie during the Clubnight on 3 November and sound-integrator Butcher Brown, keyboardist and jazz guru Cory Henry and saxophonist Nubya in the FestivalNight on 4 November.

And your sidestep from rap to jazz during So What’s Next? How did this came around? “My management has good contacts with the Muziekgebouw and so the musical link was actually made very quickly and also very logical. Earlier, we gave a concert in collaboration with the Metropole Orkest. We are now in the process of creating a unique show for 4 November, thinking carefully about how we shape that crossover between hip-hop and jazz. How do we give the audience an authentic and immersive experience? In doing so, I would also like to embrace the village mentality and work together precisely here. We in Eindhoven do not always realise that it is not normal how well we treat each other here. Take the Muziekgebouw, for example. The fact that they have agreed to let us rehearse there is really unprecedented.People don’t always realise how much effort it takes to be on a stage. Being accessible and willing is

The strength of hip-hop is that you don’t knock on anyone’s door and instead do everything yourself Eindhoven’s strength. Did you know that one of the first hip-hop labels also came from here? Saskia Slegers, DJ and bass guitarist, started her own record label Miss Djax in 1989, with which she signed the hip-hop band 24K and later Osdorp Posse. A lot really happened in Eindhoven. Many legal and illegal parties were held in the city, such as the Fiesta Del Sol and Planet Rock in the Beursgebouw until 2010. During that time, I broke through and hooked up with an Amsterdam label. That’s a pitty though; I would have loved to have signed a record deal in the South.” With also the launch of your merchandising with Takumi Collection and the launch of your EP on 20 October, you do have a lot of great things going on. ‘True. Music, label and merchandise. That’s what I rely on. Let’s put it this way: in reality, I live from day to day. But with an enormous drive. The desire to be independent, to release my own music, to discover what else I want to do and what I can do, and what makes me good and happy; now that I have my own label, that becomes possible. My management manages the income and expenses, of course I can steer, but I am also learning to do this as well as I can." n

With expectation, our hearts beats It is not an exaggeration to say that Sinterklaas in The Netherlands is more important than Santa Claus. Here, children wait for gifts on the morning or evening of December 5th, while those on the 25th almost take second place. The Saint Nicholas celebration is a magical moment characterized by particular traditions: from the so-called ‘surprise’, an exceptionally elaborately wrapped up and disguised present, to the shoes left in front of the radiators in the weeks before the Sinterklaasavond, in the hope that Sint will fill it with a small present or a chocolate goody. TEXT: AILEN GAMBERONI | PHOTOGRAPHY: BC FOTOGRAFIE

The feast of Sinterklaas celebrates the name day of Saint Nicholas by giving gifts on St. Nicholas’ Eve (December 5th) in the Netherlands and on the morning of December 6th, Saint Nicholas Day, in Belgium, Luxembourg, somewhere in Germany, France, Italy, and Hungary. Many children’s hearts will beat even faster when they see this ‘Klaas’ arrive in person, loaded with unique sweets like pepernoten (small ginger biscuits), taai taai (chewy aniseed biscuits) and schuimpjes (meringues). But in the first place, all attention will go out to the many presents Sinterklaas and his fellow Pieten will bring.

WOW! THIS CASTLE IS WHERE THE PRESENTS ARE WRAPPED Many events are dedicated to the little ones in the Brabant region to joyful celebrate this enchanted moment, awaited all year round. On RegioRadar Eindhoven you can find the complete calendar of events, among which the enchanting arrival of Sinterklaas stands out. In Helmond the main attraction is the magical Castle of Saint Nicholas, where very year - in mid-November - Sinterklaas and a large party of his helpers dock and stay during their visit in the Netherlands.

blaring from the speakers. There are several rooms to visit. You can take a look in the puppets’ bedroom, see where the presents are wrapped and help bake gingerbread cookies in the bakery. In the last room, the one and only Saint Nicholas is waiting to receive his visit and the wish lists.

is a lot of entertainment on the forecourt, where admission is free. As a Foundation, we also want to take our social responsibility. In addition, we also organize a Special Sinterklaas Day on December 4th for people with a physical or mental disability or chronic illness. In total, in Helmond we receive an average of 25,000 visitors. In 2022, Sinterklaas have received his 400,000th visitor.’

How many volunteers work with you? The occasion is perfect to talk about it with Niki de Greef-Coolen, Chairman of the PR & Communications Committee of the Sinterklaas Castle in Helmond. Niki explains the story of the vast Foundation Sinterklaas Stad Helmond.

Why the figure of Sinterklaas is so essential? ‘For children, it is and remains a magical story. Sinterklaas traveled from Spain to the Netherlands, only to give the children a wonderful time with fun, goodies, and remember presents!’

What are your values? ‘For us it is essential that visiting Saint Nicholas in the castle is an accessible event to many due to the low entrance fee. In addition, there

ho exactly is Sinterklaas? A legendary figure based on Saint Nicholas and one of the sources of the famous Christmas icon of Santa Claus, Sinterklaas is a patron saint of children. He was a 4th-century bishop who lived in Myra, in what is now Turkey. From the 11th century onwards, news of the saints’ miracles spread around Western Europe. Stories say Bishop Nicholas performed several miracles, resurrecting young schoolchildren and saving sailors from hurricanes. A gang of helpers accompanied Sinterklaas, known as the Pieten, who wear brightly colored clothing and feathered caps, entertain the children, and give out sweets and presents.

What is the program? ‘On November 19 Sinterklaas arrives in Helmond. Then, the gates of Sinterklaas Castle will be open daily, except for November 27th. The castle is a terrific space where booking a unique tour through dedicated magic rooms is possible. On weekdays, Sinterklaas receives primary school students from groups 3 and 4. In the afternoons and at weekends it is open to all other visitors. There is also a lot of entertainment on the forecourt, including the Theater of Sinterklaas, De Knutselclub van Sinterklaas (The Craft Club), and the Sinterklaas Express.’ n

It is by now a regular occurrence. Via the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal, the steamer from Spain then arrives in the heart of the city. After an official handover of keys by the mayor and the parade through the city centre, St Nicholas can retire back to his temporary home: Helmond Castle. From that moment the Saint is happy to open his doors to visitors. Children and those accompanying them can come and take a look in all the rooms that Sinterklaas and his helpers use. And that is an unforgettable experience! Glowing faces guaranteed.

THE ATMOSPHERE STARTS ON THE SQUARE As soon as you walk in Castle of St Nicholas, you are in another world. On the square in front of the castle there is a Sinterklaas Express, a theatre and Saint Nicholas music

Media literacy

Prior to Media Literacy Week, media coach Martijn Koonings talks more about the digital world of children. For children, digital media is the most normal thing in the world. Both the possibilities and the risks of online media are increasing rapidly. As a parent, caregiver, and teacher, it is important to guide a child in our online society. This can be quite difficult if, as an adult, you did not grow up with all this media (wisdom) and may also be unfamiliar with all the possibilities and pitfalls. After this evening you can go home with practical tips. Tickets: libraryeindhoven.nl/programma

BIANCA RUNGE Beads sprawl over softly shining aluminum in which a felled tree trunk appears to be preserved. Shredded carpets form the bottom of the labyrinth in which Bianca Runge gives nature a voice and challenges our consumer society. The bead is one of the first industrially produced products in Europe. They were used as a means of exchange and payment by traders. This is how the white heart bead became part of the motifs of cultures all over the world. The bead is international. The motifs are culturally determined. Each tree trunk ‘wrapped’ in aluminum is a blank canvas on which Bianca Runge ‘paints’ with excess beads, inspired by the colors of old carpets. Beads, chains and other luxury items proliferate like moss or beetles and form their own patterns. Shredded carpets form the basis of the work. Once open new paths are created, a labyrinth through which you can walk. A place for reflection. You are invited to share and write down your own memory and become part of the work.

Open: Sunday 5, 12, 19 en 26 November van 13 till 17 u. Finnisage: Sunday 26 November.

INNOVATION: AI

CARLO VAN DE WEIJER (TU/e): AI TECHNOLOGY INCREASES HAPPINESS IN LIFE

‘We have to innovate our way out of problems’ Carlo van de Weijer is a mechanical engineer, he would have preferred to be a biologist, but now runs the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) AI Systems Institute and chairs the Brainport AI Hub. He calls himself a techno-optimist and thinks that technological innovations such as artificial intelligence offer more opportunities for humanity than they pose a threat, but advocates caution: “A nuclear weapon cannot make a better nuclear weapon. But AI can make better AI…”

A

re technological developments going to be frightening for us? Ultimately, I don’t think, but then again, I’m a techno-optimist…” He grins: “I’m just an amateur psychologist who thinks about it, but I just follow our evolutionary logic. I wanted to study biology.” This does not alter the fact that Carlo follows the paths of technology-philosophy and fully reflects on the developments in order to be able to interpret them for his students. Irony is no stranger to him. On the other hand, he likes to be helped with good insight that broadens his perspective. He does not have a monopoly on wisdom, he acknowledges, because doubt is the foundation of science. “There are a lot of classic nerds around here and we need them too. The success of the Eindhoven Brainport Region depends on these types of technicians. I often visit Silicon Valley, where they rave about their successes, but it is largely based on our technological innovations…” To immediately qualify: “I think we need each other. They are simply very good at complete freedom of development. Good cooperation is essential for everyone.” In any case, Europe is not hopelessly behind the United States and China, says Carlo. “The world is changing rapidly, but that is always the case, we are in a constant transition period in which our quality of life only increases. Man is simply trapped in a constant search for progress, which does not mean that nothing should be done about the problems in the world, because with increasing technical progress, these problems also become greater.

THE IMPORTANCE OF INNOVATION “You always see three ways how people react to that kind of impending disaster,” he continues. ”First, denial. I think that is a dangerous strategy. You can experiment physically and chemically with the Earth and the atmosphere, but if it goes wrong, you will be too late. But denial is nice, because then you don’t have to do anything and just continue living. A second method that is often called for is: stop growing. “Growth has brought us here, so we must slow it down and therefore consume less. I think that is an even worse strategy. Firstly, it is a dangerous route because it does not work. Man is motivated by progress. Without progress we will be miserable. Cutting back is a false solution. 36

TEXT: HANS MATHEEUWSEN | PHOTO: ERIK DE BROUWER

But the main problem with consuming less is that it is a partial solution. In most cases it concerns solutions of a few percent, so even if we start consuming less, we still have to solve a large part of the problem. And there lies the essence: we must innovate our way out of problems. Until now, this has always been technology that has helped solve our problems. And that is why I have one foot in this university,

‘I honestly think that technology can solve all our problems’ that is my motivation, because I think that, by definition, we as a species can only innovate our way out of problems. That is the importance of innovation. And that has always been the case and will continue to be the case.”

UNIVERSAL MORAL COMPASS Until now, man has controlled technology, but that will change sooner or later, Carlo explains. Artificial intelligence can develop itself further. “I honestly think that technology can solve all our problems. I see the advantages of technology, and they always outweigh the disadvantages. I think we can limit the threats. This also applies to AI. But it is an extremely powerful technology, so the corresponding risk. There is a danger in every technique, but you can still control and regulate it to some extent. A nuclear weapon cannot make a better nuclear weapon. As a person you have to think about that yourself. But AI can make better AI. And because of that, this technology is changing exponentially. ASML can take the next step thanks to the enormous computing power provided by chips made possible by ASML technology. In the development of AI, there comes a time when we as hu-

mans can no longer keep up with development. We just can’t imagine the possibilities. We are linear thinkers, that is determined by evolution. This is how our brain is formed. When hunting we knew that if the deer walked like that... that you had to shoot like that. Technology does not change linearly but exponentially and at a certain point, as a linear human being, you cannot keep up. So, we will have to develop some sort of universal moral compass for machines that technology will adhere to. Despite my techno-optimism, I am in favour of regulation, there should be limits on what AI can do in the future. In Europe we regulate automation properly, based on the traditional European focus on the individual. That may be slower than China, which thinks more in the interests of the government, or the US where companies have a relatively large say, but in my opinion the interests of the individual is the only correct path for the long term. And the average individual is actually not that different from the collective.”

DOING BUSINESS MORE HUMANELY The application of technology can increase people’s happiness, Carlo argues, even at work. “Where you used to have a job description, you now get the purpose of the company as a mission, and the freedom and resources to work. What is required of you is to use your common sense and work in the best interests of the company. As a company you must stimulate motivation and ensure that employees have a good time. The change is that we are moving from task-driven to mission-driven. We know where the company needs to go, we know what the intention is and if something needs to be done, we will do it, even if it is not exactly stated in our job description. That is increasingly becoming the essence of the work. Let the machines do the work within the lines, then we as humans can do human business. In this way, AI ultimately makes us much more human.” n This interview also appeared in Nuance, Crowe Foederer’s magazine.

MEETUPS: COMMUNITY INTRODUCTION NOVEMBER 1 (HYBRID)

C O L U M N M AT H I L D E

Celebrate! A group of my rowing friends and I flew to Ankara, eagerly anticipating a special occasion: the wedding of our Turkish friend, Simge. Several months ago, she told us, after our weekly training, that she would be returning to her homeland, Turkey, to marry Ufuk, whom she had known for a long time. Despite building a life as an international in Eindhoven and holding a great job as an engineer at DAF, her longing for her culture and family became too strong. Her true home turned out to be Turkey. The wedding and our visit to Ankara turned into an unforgettable experience. Looking back, I wonder what made the visit so special: the mosaic-adorned mosque and its soft, turquoise carpet, the Mausoleum of Atatürk, the food, the parks? Of course, I was impressed by the bond between Simge and Ufuk, but what truly left the biggest impression on me was feeling connected to strangers without speaking each other’s language. Many residents of the bustling city didn’t speak English, and we only knew ten words of Turkish. The fact that we attempted to express ourselves in the language of our host country led to laughter but, more importantly, it created a sense of connection. Among the first words we learned were ‘merhaba’ and ‘güle güle’ (hello and goodbye), and we cheerfully repeated them to everyone we met. Our very limited Turkish resulted in direct contact. Language connects, but it’s the efforts to speak the foreign language that truly foster connection.

The recipient of the message doesn’t mind mistakes but appreciates your attempts. Sometimes, you understand each other with just a few words. Genuine interest in the culture and way of life also bring people closer together. In the old city, we went from the cobbler to the honey seller, from the tailor’s shop to Ankara’s most famous coffee roaster. We were impressed by what we saw and expressed our admiration for the entrepreneurs, who warmly and proudly received our compliments. Sometimes, older Turks on the street would spontaneously strike up a conversation with us; they had worked as guest workers in the Netherlands and were eager to share their experiences. Non-verbal communication worked as well. At the mosque entrance, our slight reluctance to wear a headscarf was noticed, and we were allowed to enter unveiled. Asking for help or simply asking a question also encouraged connection. A bus driver spontaneously brought us to the right bus, and a passerby took us to the city’s best baklava spot during her lunch break. At the wedding celebration, we immersed ourselves even more in the Turkish culture. There was delicious food, talking, discussion, but above all, dancing to traditional Turkish music, and we danced along, encouraged by the Turkish guests. The dance floor was the grass, the view was Ankara, and Simge and Ufuk were the radiant center of attention. It made me think about our international students; it must be the same for them. They are strangers in a new culture, in the Netherlands, in Eindhoven. How do you make yourself feel at home? My advice would be ... speak Dutch, even if it’s just ten words. Ask questions, seek help, learn about the culture, and above all: celebrate with us. The Dutch are definitely open to connect.

More than 150 students work on solutions to social challenges during this competition. Strategic partners such as ASML and Rabobank then help them take the first steps towards entrepreneurship.

During the Contest, student teams work on self-devised solutions for social challenges, for example in the field of energy transition, the future of healthcare or cybersecurity. “Very broad, then. But these are topics that concern this younger generation,” says Marc Cootjans, Director of the Co-operative Rabobank in the East Brabant region. “They want to make money, but also want to improve the world. That makes you very happy and optimistic.”

‘They want to make money, but also want to improve the world. That makes you very happy and optimistic’ BUSINESS SUPPORT During the competition, the student teams pitch their (idea for a) startup. They improve their ideas based on the feedback they receive and by following various workshops. But the help doesn’t stop there. Marc: “A jury selects the best ideas. We offer our network and advice to winning teams and we can help them with

financing if necessary. For example, through the Rabo Innovation Loan, financing for startups focused on innovation and development.” OPEN DOORS ASML, like Rabobank, has been a partner from the very beginning. “People sometimes ask us: what is in it for you? But that is not our concern,” says Paul Simmeren, Head of Inclusive Talent & STEM Education at ASML. “We would like to help these students by ope-

T.E.S.T. T.E.S.T. is one of the student teams taking part. “We are working on a biosensor to detect traumatic brain injury,” says Treasurer, Merel Diender. “During my studies in Biomedical Technology, I often stick to conceptual thinking, which is great that we are now working on something concrete.” That practical aspect is also what appeals to her and Chairman, Sam Reijs about the TU/e Contest. “How is our product positioned in the market and how do we get it to market? We learned a lot about this during the workshops. T.E.S.T. ultimately won the ASML Award and €2,500.

ning doors that they cannot open. Why? It is precisely these startups that drive change and innovation. But they do need support for that. We are happy to help with this.”

INNOVATIVE REGION Whether you win or not, and whether you become an entrepreneur or not, participation is always worthwhile, according to founder Luc. “This competition is an opportunity for students to get a

HART HART, also a student team that participated in the TU/e Contest, is investigating the possibility of communicating using haptic technology. “Vibrations then pass on a message. This way you can feel language or facial expressions instead of hearing or seeing them,” says Juliette Passariello-Jansen. The team won first prize in the ‘People’ category. “This competition is a great opportunity for us to learn more about entrepreneurship, for example about writing a business plan.” Teammate Jelle Osinga thinks the TU/e Contest is a big opportunity to spar with companies and experts from the field. “The opportunity to network and receive feedback. Because sometimes, due to your own enthusiasm, you no longer see what could be improved.”

‘This competition is an opportunity for students to get a taste of entrepreneurship and the business network in the region’ taste of entrepreneurship and the business network in the region. They have really achieved this well in the Eindhoven region. The TU/e Contest creates a flywheel effect towards even more innovation in the region.” ENGINEERS OF THE FUTURE With nine events under its belt, the TU/e Contest has already produced several innovative companies. Like T.E.S.T. and HEART (see box below). The organization is now in the hands of TU/e Innovation Space. Gert Guri is the Education on Entrepreneurial Learning coordinator. “Students learn to first look at social demand and from there to come up with innovative technological solutions. This requires ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking, collaboration in multi-disciplinary teams and entrepreneurship. Exactly the skills they need as engineers of the future.” n

build a high-quality and personal network? Participate in the Young Network Event on November 21th! What you can expect: unexpected encounters, interactivity, and connection with all Brainport communities, including the technical ones. TEXT: MARIE-JOSÉ DEKKERS | PHOTOGRAPHY: KEES MARTENS DCI MEDIA

‘IT’S SOMETHING FOR YOU’

Y

asmine Bal, Business Intelligence Manager at Ahrend in Sint-Oedenrode: “At my first YNE, I thought ‘Oh Brainport, so many technical people’. I want to see other sectors, outside my own bubble. It is a broad field of participants. I spoke to lawyers and architects. There is a lot of interactivity and you don’t expect the encounters in advance.” Jasper Kee, Business Consultant at DELA, previously participated twice in YNE: “I think English is a logical choice to broaden the network. In any case, it is good to be taken away from work for a while. You experience such a day with all kinds of people from all corners of the Brainport region and discuss current topics. You enrich your knowledge and your network.”

Rotary in Music On 21 November 21, Rotary Club Eindhoven Soeterbeek are organizing Rotary in Music for the 31st time, this year with Candy Dulfer & friends. Since 2019, this benefit and networking event in the Muziekgebouw, Eindhoven is preceded by Young Network Event (YNE). In DomusDela - within walking distance of the Muziekgebouw - there will be top speakers, workshops, drinks, dinner, and networking opportunities (from 2.30pm) for two hundred Brainport professionals up to the age of 35. The keynotes will come from Hellen van der Plas, CEO Signify

Yasmine is now chairman of Rotaract Eindhoven and YNE co-organizer: “YNE is actually the day programme at the major benefit event. Due to the international character of the Brainport region, for the first time the official

‘Individuals can make significant contributions to major movements and to society’ language is English, for a greater reach. We have raised the objective. The organization is therefore able to expand by appealing to internationals. We also hear that this is an event that is useful to you, as Jasper agrees.

Benelux, and Marjolein de Hooge, Global Head Attractive & Inclusive Communities ASML, while the Muziekgebouw Director, Edo Righini, will also speak interactively. The three charities benefitting from Rotary in Music support this year: Stichting Ik Wil (voluntary helping hands for and by Eindhoven residents, hamlets), De Weekendschool Eindhoven (learning about fields from guest teachers, broadening perspectives) and Kazerne Design Awards (incentive prize for recently graduated designers; design and entrepreneurship).

Want to know more and/or register? Check rotaryinmusic.nl/young-network-event

There is also a nice interaction with Rotaract Eindhoven, whose participants become members, and with members of Rotary Eindhoven Soeterbeek who help expanding this network.” Yasmine explains the annual theme ‘Let’s get connected’: “We brainstormed about inclusivity and what that means. That means connecting with each other, it doesn’t even matter on what level. That’s why we zoom in on connection. How do you do that, business networking? And personally; How do we ensure that we tell each other what we really want to say? That is why there are also workshops on storytelling and ChatGPT; current, about human connections.”

R O TA R Y TA L E N T E N

How do you, as a young, international, Brainport resident,

PARTICIPATE It’s a solid day, Jasper thinks: “Listening to interesting speakers and getting practical insights from workshops that I can take with me to my work. But I especially appreciate the connections with others, so a well-chosen theme that fits the purpose of the day. You learn the power of networking and using your network. I speak to so many people from different disciplines; exactly why Rotary and Rotaract were founded. They help you in your work and in your social life. That is only possible if you really look for the connection and speak to others who have experience in or with something.” Yasmine: “Brainport is sometimes called an ecosystem, and that is what it is. Individuals can make significant contributions to major movements and to society. YNE is a steppingstone for that.” Jasper: “Perhaps YNE could be even more technical, if you look at the population of the region. You want connections with all communities. I work in improving processes. It doesn’t matter where you work; lawyers and process improvers can have the same challenges. You find this out by having conversations: ‘What are you doing, what drives you, what are you facing?’ What is self-evident to you can be an eye-opener for someone else. I strongly believe that innovation – incremental or radical – comes from combinations of knowledge areas. A new idea starts with two people who know a lot about different topics, who can strengthen each other. To meet them, you have to look them up. There is always common ground between people, no matter how different they are. That is precisely the strength of YNE. Always stay in safe circles? Then you will never gain the new knowledge and experiences that can help you. Rotary and Rotaract try to encourage this. Talk to as many people as possible and you will go home enriched. The YNE day will only really benefit you if you broaden your network there.” n
