Not only is he Mayor of Eindhoven, Jeroen Dijsselbloem is also Chairman of the Brainport Foundation and of the Eindhoven Metropolitan Area. Since he returned to his familiar surroundings in 2022, he likes to go out - preferably by bike - to get to know the city and countryside again. Let’s discuss the innovations, transformations and challenges extensively in Eindless magazine, as a real Brainporter Jeroen (re)discovers them in person.
Dear readers,
It may be strange to say this as Mayor, but 150 years ago, the Eindhoven region was not that much. A few villages with a small town in the middle, which you would not expect to play a significant role in the world. But, thanks to the arrival of large industries such as Philips and DAF, we quickly became much more important and more attractive. Coming from within and outside the region, our residents collectively ensured that we flourished in more than a century into the powerful Brainport Eindhoven of today.
Brainport Eindhoven has been a melting pot of old and new for years now. A mix of different nationalities, cultures and religions. A breeding ground for creations and innovations that make a difference on a global scale. While at the same time we manage to retain the Burgundian Brabant cohesion and sociability. It is precisely this combination that is an important key to our success. But that combination is not always easy and does not come about automatically.
I expect that our region will be able to make great strides in the coming years.
The challenge is how we ensure that everyone can come along. That our wealth is distributed fairly. Everyone has access to education, culture and sport. That sufficient affordable houses are available for new and old residents. In short: how we remain one city. A city that is shared, but not divided. (not divided, but shared).
I am glad that a magazine like Eindless pays attention to the development of Brainport Eindhoven and the special role that internationals play in this. This magazine tries to make a connection between people and their living environment. And thus contributes to the social cohesion that is so badly needed. I am therefore proud to be able to write a foreword to you in this first edition. Hopefully many more will follow.
I hope you enjoy reading it!

GERARD PHILIPS HONOURED
Who can be considered one of the Brainport founders? Then we end up with Gerard Philips (1858-1942), founder of the world-famous Eindhoven electronics group. He started the company in 1891 in a factory for the manufacture of light bulbs on the Emmasingel in the city. There is an exhibition about his life in this ‘Philips Museum’ until 9th October.
The exhibition offers an insight into the thoughts and actions of the Philips founder. With an eye for technology, entrepreneurship and fellow human beings, Gerard Philips was a special man who, 132 years ago, laid the foundations for the international company that grew into a global concern. Gerard was not an inventor, but as a researcher and manufacturer he had a keen eye for developments that took place elsewhere and he quickly mastered them. Difficulties were to be overcome, brooding and experimenting endlessly, sometimes working through nights.
First on his own, gradually with a growing technical staff, his own chemical laboratory and his own machine factory. With his formidable technical achievements, Gerard as a manufacturer ensured that his brother Anton, as a merchant, never had to say ‘no’. Gerard’s perseverance alone was a source of inspiration. Without him, Eindhoven would not be the vibrant city it is today. Philips celebrated 130 years in business in 2021 and donated a statue of Gerard to the citizens of Eindhoven. This is located in the Gloeilampplantsoen on Strijp-T, one of the company’s former factory complexes. There are also statues of Anton and cousin Frits in the city.
The Brain Port
In the heart of our region, surrounded by nature and the geniality of the Kempen, Oscar Quevedo of the port house of the same name and Marc Crijns of Restaurant Crijns in Hapert came up with the idea for this port wine. A port for bon vivants and pioneers, for lovers of the good life and innovation. The Brainport is a regional product and combines the best of two worlds: born in Brainport, matured and bottled in the Douro. Available at: www.thebrainport.com

Residential hub for better guidance internationals
There is a shortage of housing in Eindhoven and the surrounding area. Internationals who want to settle here are now looking in a wide circle around the region for the supply of homes. According to Jacqueline Coppelmans, of the real estate agency of the same name in Eindhoven, it is high time for a residential hub on the campuses and at companies. She is convinced that better guidance with buying and renting also promotes social integration.
Eindhoven is the fastest growing municipality in the Netherlands. In the last thirty years, the population has increased by 25%, to almost 245,000 inhabitants this year. Due to the turbulent economic growth of the Brainport region - by as much as 6% in 2022 - the need is high. In Eindhoven alone within the ring, about thirty large housing projects are in the pipeline, some of which are currently being realized, including the highest residential tower, Lighthouse, on Strijp-S.
The city council wants to build 3,000 new homes every year, but this number has not yet been achieved. The city wants to grow rapidly to 300,000 inhabitants in order to maintain the level of facilities. But strict environmental regulations, housing requirements from the government, increased construction and material costs, social developments and lengthy consultation procedures threaten to seriously slow progress down.
The housing market in the region is flooded with internationals and (labour) migrants who come to work here. Hundreds arrive every month. They are all looking for housing. Employers help them find it, especially financially,
There is a need for an integrated, long-term and personal approach, say Jacqueline, Menno and Mike. In collaboration with company Human Resources managers, on location at companies and tailor-made. As an example, Jacqueline mentions the sale and rental of homes in a new residential tower, many of which are planned in Eindhoven. Supply and demand can be matched via the residential hub and the tower can be filled. The home seekers are guided from A to Z, including help in finding the right agencies and completing the necessary paperwork.
Menno has developed an application in which all ideas can be given a place, he says. “You can automate many processes. A lot has to be arranged, there is a mountain of paperwork to fill in and there are always many questions: where will I live, where will my children go to school, which health insurance and how will it work? All the answers are there, they just need to be offered in a structured way, in an app. The app is now available and works. An app with a personal touch.”
He himself works a lot with expat’s partners who have been living here for several years. He uses them for the reception and guidance of newcomers. “They take people by the hand. Waiting at the airport, talking, organizing events, making sure a bicycle is ready. This is how we ensure a warm reception. They come into contact with people who have lived here for years. They are the masters of experience. We see new friendships emerging from that. That makes it all a lot more pleasant.”
but soon the new employees are left to fend for themselves, say broker Jacqueline Coppelmans, recruiter Menno van den Berk, manager at HighTechTalents, and lawyer Mike Krak, owner of Xpath – the expat guide. They want to join forces for better guidance when purchasing or renting a home. This also benefits social integration, argues Jacqueline. They would like to establish themselves as a kind of residential hub on, for example, the High Tech Campus Eindhoven, but such commercial activities are not allowed there, explains Jacqueline. Not yet. Perhaps the new owner, the Singaporean investor GIC, wants to adopt a more flexible policy is her hope. It could also take some pressure off the regional housing market, despite the increase in mortgage interest to an average of 3.5 to 4%, houses are still being sold.
Moreover, in their search, expats do not receive the same treatment that the Dutch receive, in her experience. Those interested in a home are crammed into a viewing half hour. Anyone who dares not to show up for the appointment runs the risk of no longer being considered. And often preference is given to Dutch buyers or tenants because internationals do not all have an equally favorable image as a result of differences in culture, experience and customs.
It is Mike’s experience that internationals feel lost after a while, if the attention of an employer, a re-locator or a recruitment agency, for example, slackens. There is an offer of help, but fragmented and not (good) enough. Internationals need to know their way around. A personal, long-term approach helps to find it. “Getting along with the people. Discussing things at the kitchen table. This ultimately promotes social integration, which increases the chance that people will stay and not leave again after a few years. That way it can work both ways.”
Jacqueline would like to talk to all HR managers. “We are very happy that people want to come and work here. That is great for our economy. It’s not that bad, but it can all be better. Happy wife, happy life. People settle here, but that’s only the beginning. You want to belong to something. If that does not happen, compatriots seek help and support from each other. They then take care of each other within their own culture. That is good, but at the expense of social integration. There is a lot of heavy rain, it’s time for an umbrella.” n
‘Soon new employees are left to fend for themselves’
‘People settle here, but that’s only the beginning. You want to belong somewhere’
The influx of expats coming to work in Eindhoven is increasing, but financial services specifically aimed at expats are lagging behind. A striking phenomenon, as integrating into a new country with different regulations and language barriers can be difficult. The financial experts at Perrée & Partners aim to solve this with their new mortgage initiative Brickle. An initiative in which they want to make the Dutch mortgage market more accessible to expats.
With this new initiative, the Eindhoven-based team of Brickle aims to be a frontrunner in financial services for expats. “With a wealth of personal finance experience behind us, we saw a growing need for personalised advice focused on internationals moving to Eindhoven and surroundings. Therefore, we wanted to start an initiative that focuses solely on mortgages for expats. This marks the beginning of Brickle, where we can help expats find the right mortgage solution for every situation”, says Leen Winter, Brickle’s manager of the mortgage department.
Mortgage advice in your own language
“At Brickle, we want to offer a more personal approach that thoughtfully considers expats’ goals, families, and their future. The goal with this, is to offer full-service mortgage advice to our clients in their own language. We realize that the mortgage process can be difficult, especially when you cannot go through this process in your native language. Therefore, interpreting services are made available for hire at every step of our clients’ housing journey.”
However, Brickle doesn’t stop at mortgage advice. With specialized partners like notaries and real estate agents, Brickle can assist throughout the whole process of buying your dream house in the Netherlands. From the moment you want to embark on your house hunting journey to the moment you are finalizing your property purchase at the notary, Brickle is there to help.
Complete carefree service
Leen Winter also explains what you can expect when working with Brickle. “If you are thinking about buying property in the Netherlands, it is always advised to schedule an exploratory mortgage consultation. During this first consultation, one of our mortgage advisors will assess your current personal situation, future plans and wishes. Based on this they can give you a first indication of your possibilities on the Dutch mortgage market. This first consultation is always free of charge and without obligations.”
Have you already submitted a bid on your dream house, or are you already a homeowner in need of refinancing? You can then schedule a more in-depth meeting with a personal mortgage advisor. “During this advisory meeting, our team will take their time to fully assess your situation down to every detail. Your personal advisor will then give you an overview of mortgages that are most financially advantageous in your situation. After choosing your preferred mortgage lender, your personal advisor will then help you arrange your mortgage application to ensure a quick mortgage approval. Because our office is independent, you will always be partnered with a mortgage lender that best suits your wishes and situation.”
Want to explore your financing options? The team at Brickle is happy to discuss your current situation free of charge. Find out your most beneficial mortgage arrangement by contacting Brickle or scanning the QR-code below!

How to integrate in the Netherlands?
Integrating into a new country can be a scary and brave task, but with a positive mindset and perseverance, you can make it a rewarding experience in life #yolo. Take it from me, Jin Chen, a seasoned traveler who’s been living and integrating in China, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and France the past 35 years. I am working as an international tax advisor at Crowe Foederer and coaching international clients on how to stay healthy mentally when expanding their business internationally.
When moving to the Netherlands, the first thing I learned is to learn about the Dutch culture and people. It’s not only about wearing custom made wooden shoes or hanging out with other expats only and staying in your bubble. To have a successful career and life in the Netherlands, you really need to get to know the Dutch people. Learning the Dutch language is an excellent way to integrate. I must admit that my Chinese mom has found the best way to do so. Get a Dutch buddy and teach him/she your native language, in my mom case, Mandarin. In return, practice Dutch and impress your buddy by ordering bitterballen and a biertje in the local café.
And when it comes to making friends, joining a local club or group related to your personal interests is a great way to meet Dutch people. For example, volunteer work. The possibilities in the Netherlands are endless! Make a difference for elderly, homeless people, refugees, nature, culture, or art. In addition, it is a great way to achieve personal growth and feel more home in the Netherlands.
At the same time, many expats need to get used to the Dutch work life balance. The Dutch are the masters in taking care of their mental and physical health. I’m personally convinced that this is also the reason
why the Netherlands is home to the largest number of innovation leaders, ranking 4th in Europe and 5th globally. This is one of the main reasons that my clients enjoy living in the Netherlands.
Last but not the least, it is important to be aware that Dutch people can come across as direct, which is often experienced as a shock to newcomers, especially outside of Europe. The Dutch often speak their mind with good intentions. So don’t take it all too personally if your Dutch colleague gives you some constructive feedback. Just be direct and share your honest opinion. Great discussions may lead to new ideas!
In conclusion, integration into the Netherlands can be a huge challenge, but also a fun and life changing experience. Remember to embrace the Dutch culture, make new local friends, learn Dutch and, of course, to cycle. Don’t forget to eat enough stroofwafels and bitterballen along the way.

EDO RIGHINI & RONALD GOEDEMONDT
Your heartbeat, the pulse you feel and share; right after the concert, heart and senses are still wide open. The best time for reflection and a good conversation. After the impressive interplay between the American hardrock guitarist Steve Vai and the Metropole Orchestra, Muziekgebouw director Edo Righini and comedian Ronald Goedemondt talk about their experience. From a shared love for guitar, they explore the broader picture: what does culture do to people? INITIATIVE AND PROCUCTION:
Edo: : Nice and abstract, to link your love of the profession to tonight’s concert, and to ask questions about your love of culture in a broad sense. But, I’m curious: what do you remember on such an evening?
Ronald: : I was particularly impressed by Steve Vai’s intimacy of expression, the magic. Similar to theatre. I always feel that when I feel it on stage, people in the back row feel it too. It doesn’t matter how short you play, if you honestly express what you feel and you really dare to show it, you dare to let yourself be watched, then that can be felt at the back. I also experience that in my current performance, every night that I perform. That happened tonight too. I thought the last song Steve Vai played was the most impressive, it had a really sweet, soft shape. Even though this included screaming tones, there was a lot of volume swell, with fuzzy little clouds of tones that he expressed, like balloons one after the other. That touched me the most, while that man can, of course, fire like a rocket.
E: For Steve Vai, connecting is an important part of his game, he invented that style. The ‘balloons he releases’ are tools for him to communicate his emotions with the audience.
R: It takes so much refinement, and Steve Vai has mastered that. On his side, he creates the condition that contact can arise in that mass situation. Through music. He opens up completely by giving himself completely. When the public also opens up, the magical human contact occurs. That is vulnerable: it has to be opened up from both sides. If the other remains closed, it
‘When the public also opens up, the magical human contact occurs’
stays shut. This also applies to culture in a broader sense. In literature by the author who gives himself completely honestly on the pages, and the reader who reads a sentence seven times in a row and lets it come in again and again. And in comedy by the comedian, some nights are less than others because whatever in your life allows you to open up and reveal much less than you’d like. There is then less opportunity for that magic.
E: Basically you say: The ability to communicate arises in the will to communicate, but you also have to make something that is open enough for the other person to step into.
R: Right. And in Steve Vai’s last song, more space was created because there was more space in the composition. It was also softer.
E: Steve Vai once said, “Passion is everything. The musician’s goal should not be to please the audience, but to express himself authentically. If he succeeds, the audience will be happy too.”
R: Absolutely true: you can never manufacture anything for an audience, you can only try to express yourself as truthfully and honestly as possible, from as deep a layer as possible. You can’t imagine that. As a creator, I almost believe in the animalistic. You have to start from a primal state. In my case with text, I have to grumble on stage or orate about something in amazement. I am not someone who has big theories about society, talks about politics or makes socially explicit, engaged material, but I do believe in personal engagement. Express yourself. As Steve Vai puts it: as authentically as possible.
E: So it is a creative process with someone else, who has no face, but is still sitting at the table. Do you allow for and factor in the dynamics of the audience in deciding what to throw out or keep?
R: During the rehearsal phase I am very strict, it just has to be a well-composed piece. It has to do something with the public and get a response. Not neces-
sarily a smile, but also concentration, tension, an emotion or confusion. I judge myself harshly on the shape, the timing and the mechanical, tech
I surprise people? What tangent paths can I take within a topic? Interesting is the moment later in the tour, so after rehearsal and premiere, when the perfor mance has become such a solid form that you have to destroy it completely again, other wise the oxygen will be completely gone. Then you almost go the other way, back to rehearsal form again. Purely to maintain that authenticity.
E: How do you deal with your critical voice?
R: I experience that on stage: during the shoot ing day, a 10-year-old child who doesn’t like it, while I’ve only just started, the man in the front row who is asleep during the most sensitive scene. Those become corners for me that I try to stay away from, but the stage isn’t big enough. If you’re not paying attention, all the attention goes to that person. That critical voice comes in very loudly. But such a man just came along with his wife, worked hard all day and did not know that he would attend a performance in the evening. Falling asleep is not that crazy.
STORYTILES
Is a personal initiative that brings the story of culture in Eindhoven and the Brainport region to life. We believe in the power of culture and want to understand and appreciate the natural drive for art and culture. With Storytiles we want to explore the heartbeat and impact of culture and provide a platform for constructive conversations.
Storytiles function as puzzle pieces that together form a clear picture of the value and meaning of culture. Every interview, every meeting and every conversation contributes to the bigger story. We bring together relevant culture bringers, stakeholders and experts to understand from various perspectives how culture affects us and what value it has.
‘The ability to communicate arises in the will to communicate’
or beer crate. And there are people. Then just make sure you use that mic and save your ass. Anyone who is well-known or has a track minutes. After that you will be judged hard on what you put down, stand-up is very honest. As a comedian, I think it is a must to return to that.
Now we are always talking about the creator himself. Your work, Steve Vai’s. But what if you play with someone like that? The aura surrounding Vai can also be intimidating. Would I make music with him, would I really have to turn that
I’m not always impressed by an aura. I don’t want to romanticize or mystify it, but see it as a manifestation of his self-image. He believes in his name, his fame, and in what he brings to his followers. Such a greatness is often surrounded by people who maintain that image. But also think of Bruce Springsteen, who now and then just walks around in Eindhoven. Bruce and I, we have the same talent [laughs]. We can stand in line
That has to do with transforming, being able
performing. He doesn’t need to keep that fame important. With the E Street Band, Bruce Springsteen is The Boss, but when he goes to pick up Chinese food at Mei Wah, no one notices.

Both citizens and politicians do their best to address the problems in their community in various ways. However, despite the fact that everyone does so with their best intentions, things end up going wrong.

During the evening we will bring to you the real life stories of both Eindhoven citizens and administrators.

HET NATIONALE BALLET & ISH DANCE COLLECTIVE Dorian
This dance thriller is based on the famous book written by Oscar Wilde, “The Picture of Dorian Gray”. Choreographers Ernst Meisner and Marco Gerris follow the storyline of Wilde’s book in this adaptation, but place the story in a thriller-like setting. Meisner and Gerris allow different dance styles to surprisingly merge into a vibrant mix of hip-hop and ballet. In the performance, main character Dorian goes completely overboard in his lust for beauty and adoration, with all the consequences that this entails. He ends up in a downward spiral and gets entangled in a labyrinth in which he can no longer separate reality from fantasy
Joey Roukens, one of the most famous young composers in the Netherlands, wrote a new full-length piece of music especially for Dorian. In recent years, he has composed works for various Dutch and international orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

The Memorial and the celebration
Breaking the chains, that is literally what Keti Koti and Kadena Kibra stand for. Even though the memorial day has been celebrated in Eindhoven for generations by descendants of enslaved people, many do not know that. That will be different this year. With Saida Vianen, Arantja Rosalina and Roger Vrede, a new generation rises within the committee 30 June/1 July Eindhoven. Together with the working group, they are responsible for organizing the commemoration and celebration in Eindhoven.
They want to make awareness and celebrations more visible. Arantja: “We are part of society. We live and work in the city, in the region. Keti Koti/ Kadena Kibra makes the recognition of inequality clear and makes us aware of the importance of (continuing to) treat each other in an equal way.’
Keti Koti (pronounced Kitti Kotti) in Sranatongo, and Kadena Kibra in Papiamento: they are two names for one and the same phenomenon: remembering the unknown, extremely painful past and celebrating the freedom, equality and connection around the abolition of slavery in the former Dutch colonies of Surinam, Former Netherlands Antilles and the Caribbean on 1st July 1863, where more than 45,000 “chained”, the enslaved people, were freed. In Eindhoven, the commemoration of the slavery past will take place on Friday 30th June and 150 years of abolition following 350 years of slavery will be celebrated on Saturday 1st July. But actually it is much more than that: with the commemoration and celebrations around Keti Koti/Kadena Kibra, Eindhoven residents with a Surinamese/Afro-Caribbean background show themselves to be diverse and equal at the same time – a better example of an annual tradition of equality and inclusion is rarely seen.
Do you feel that Keti Koti/Kadena Kibra needs more attention?
Saida: “Topics such as racism and discrimination are present in society. Experienced by both black and white. Consciously but also often unconsciously, also in Eindhoven. While as a city you want to show and propagate exactly the opposite: diverse, but equal as neighbours. With Keti Koti we reflect on the pain that this causes and the trauma that has been passed on for generations.”
Arantja: “Together with the Eindhoven Municipality and Gisèle Mambre (Municipal Council Member GroenLinks), the Committee 30 June/1 July Foundation took the step to also raise awareness about freedom from slavery. By familiarizing city residents with history. Allowing
space for grieving - even if it’s not yours personally, but what your parents or grandparents went through - and honouring that it’s part of us. Providing education about the reason for the commemoration is a foundation for this. Coming together and celebrating together is very important for our future as well.”
Roger: ‘Arantja is treasurer, and we are jointly responsible for communication of Keti Koti/ Kadena Kibra Eindhoven. Gerard is responsible for the commemorations on 30th June 30 andfor the programme on 1st July. Marieke supports us in this.’
the day it was cooked and when they returned from the plantation it was ready.’
Roger: ‘The Keti Koti/Kadena Kibra festival in Eindhoven is dedicated to the heritage, the culture, all day long. There is music, cabaret, entertainment for the children. With stories from that time and songs, the oral history is also handed down. You can get acquainted with the Angisa. Everyone can display their wares on the market and you can buy something. It’s about the togetherness and we honour that we are where we are now.’
Arantja: “We like to commemorate and celebrate with the whole community. Everyone is welcome. And with a big smile, we live together and eat together. Because to be fair, food is central to our life.’
Saida: ‘Nice to share: the Koto was worn by the enslaved to cover the female body as much as possible. The Agnisa is a headscarf. Messages could be passed on by means of, among other things, the binding methods. So they had a communicative function at the time of slavery.”
Organizing a party around a theme that has so much historical weight does not seem easy to me.
Saida: “The underlying emotions, the diversity of cultures, the desire that is very valuable. They are parts of the journey that we go through, there are so many facets that we want to make visible. Education, for example. So that we not only tell the story on a day like Keti Koti/Kadena Kibra, but also by including other dates in the annual programme that are closely related to this history.
Arantja: ‘In addition to celebrating, discovering and sharing together, we want to tell the story and let it be discovered. In Eindhoven, there has been commemoration and celebration for generations, but mainly in private circles. It is now time for the celebration to become more visible and public. And that the cause of the commemoration and the reason for the celebration is known.”
Roger: ‘Our ancestors were the people who were chained in those bonds, they were the enslaved. In us, the history that is not yet wellknown, but oh, so tangible, lives on. We are part of society. We live and work in the city and region.
Arantja: ‘That is also our journey as a committee: connecting within the community, by coming out as a community ourselves.’
Why are the commemoration and celebration organized separately? There is no answer to the question!!!
Arantja: ‘On Friday, 30th June, people can join the commemoration in everywhere, including the choice of location: it represents the water of our ancestors, which is about what has been and what is now. After-
together. After this ceremonial moment, the party will follow on Saturday 1st July in the afternoon and evening: residents of Eindhoven and the region are welcome at Stadhuisplein.
Saida:
Kibra is celebrated with food. Of course, because food is also almost symbolic of slavery. The enslaved knew how to make something from nothing: often they only got the legs, ears, intestines and the like from the meat, from which they then made tasty dishes. In the morning be-
• About 4% of Eindhoven inhabitants are of Surinamese and Caribbean descent. (that amounts to around 10,000 inhabitants)
• About 15,500 inhabitants of Eindhoven are of the African diaspora with a history of slavery
• The municipality is investigating what role the municipality and its partners played in slavery.
• Stichting Committee 30 June/1 July Eindhoven not only pays attention to (the contemporary consequences of) the slavery past on 30 June and 1 July. For the rest of the year, the committee also plans to highlight important days for Surinamese and Caribbean Dutch.

ALL INCLUSIVE
SPECIAL
That many films are made with ‘The Male Gaze’ is not new information. But in addition to this point of view, we often also see the heteronormativity dripping off the audiovisual work. Gays are often portrayed as the happy sidekick and lesbians as bitter tough women. It’s as if filmmakers have the idea that they have to incorporate LGBTQIA+ characters into their films without really delving into the target group. Time for change! From June 11th, we will start with All Inclusive, which focusses on a different film every month.

FC Eindhoven with passion on the way to professional football
Women’s football in the Netherlands is growing rapidly and FC Eindhoven Women is playing a leading role in this development. With the national championship in the pocket and the increasing popularity of women’s football, the ambition of this club is showing itself in full glory. Fun is central to FC Eindhoven, while the team is growing and achieving national success.
Women’s football is also clearly on the rise in the region. It is interesting to examine the ambitions here. In the 20232024 season, a First Division for women will be launched in which, provisionally, teams from FC Twente, PSV and Ajax will participate. Another club in our region that shines on the field is FC Eindhoven. The women’s team has been playing at the top of amateur football for four years and now has a national title to their name.
Whether the big dream: becoming ‘First Division National Champions’ for FC Eindhoven Women is realistic? Technical director Sandra Swinkels and team
ments and to set course for the
Eerste Divisie together with the club. An ambition that they have clearly formulated. Sandra Swinkels: “The first achievement has already been achieved by winning the National Championship title for amateurs. Our ambition to play in the Eerste Divisie will take the team further in the organization. We want to take women’s football at FC Eindhoven to a higher level and this is the first step in the right direction. The next is the step to professional football. For this, the women must come under the Professional Football Organization (BVO). But we also want to keep our current teams in the Topklasse, Hoofdklasse and our young team. In order to be able to participate in the First Division in the 2024-2025 season, we are currently working on a plan that we must submit to the KNVB. This plan not only includes sporting aspects, but also matters such as accommodation, organisation of the playing staff and social obligations. There are also requirements in the medical field. We want to get a good picture of this and go for it together.”
Football players Sem van Doorn and Guusje Raaijmakers were asked by Frits Hallink to come and play at FC Eindhoven Women. This means training and playing matches twice a week. Positive and motivated, that is what characterises the club most; playing football seems to drive them almost exclusively with passion and fun. But to what extent is the ambition to become an important player in Dutch women’s football shared with them? Is the team itself also busy setting course for the Eerste Divisie?
“We won the national championship this season. What a great year, we have grown as a team, it is a really great team.” Sem van Doorn is 23 and works at Happy Horizon. “I really play football for fun. The current developments in women’s football are very nice to see, but I also think a main career is important.
TEXT: CLAIRE VAN DER ELST | PHOTOS: JOHAN MANDERS‘We want to take football to the next level’
I come from Schijndel and played with the boys there until I was fifteen. I was playing at RKSV in Nuenen when I was asked to come and play football at Achilles. I then thought carefully about what I aspire to; I wanted to play Topklasse and continue my studies in Eindhoven. If I were a little younger, I might have made a different choice.”
“I have that too”, says Guusje Raaijmakers, who came from Raamsdonkveer, from SSS Klaaswaal, to FC Eindhoven. “I also played with the boys for a long time and when I was asked by Excelsior to play with them at the age of nineteen, I did not choose to play football in the Eredivisie. When I was asked, I was already at the Police Academy and I chose to combine my main career with playing football at the highest possible level.”
The players have a lot of fun together.
Sem: “We have a fantastic fun team of friends where fun comes first. Guusje adds: “We also do fun things together outside football, such as eating together and doing other activities. It is a really nice team and we play together in a great way.”
Of course, the team also has wishes and needs. For better facilities, for example; their current accommodation and pitches cannot match those of other clubs in the league. Improvements that are also part of the FC Eindhoven Women’s ambition. “Because we are so used to a bumpy field, playing football on a flat artificial grass field is a pleasure for us,” Guusje says. “We are used to working harder. An advantage. Unlike our Amateur Association, the BVO does have a good field and reasonable facilities.”
FC Eindhoven Women’s further ambitions
seem to concern the players less: Sem wants to play at the highest possible level in addition to her main career. Guusje says: “If we want to go through further developments, the obligations towards each other will also change. This is something we can discuss with the club. I work for the police and I combine working irregular hours with training and playing. I succeed because it gives me so much energy and because the planning department takes my competitions into account. If I have a night shift, I sleep during the day, then I play football and then I go back to the night shift. That is going really well.” n
With a combination of fun, hard work and a clear vision, FC Eindhoven Women is a source of ambition and talent in the region

The Van Abbemuseum and Eindhoven Airport welcome travellers to and from the city with art installations. In the Feel the Vibe display cases in front of the airport, you’ll discover the work Alignment by Afaina de Jong / AFARAI & InnaVisions. This installation reveals that design and architecture play a role in bringing communities and histories that have been excluded in the past into the foreground.
Delinking and Relinking: the broader story
Did you know that the Van Abbemuseum’s roots lie in the tobacco plantations of colonial Indonesia? In the Broader Story Tour, which you can follow with the Smartify app on your smartphone, 17 makers and thinkers take you on a trip through their reflections on an artwork from the collection display Delinking and Relinking. Start in the basement with writer Reggie Baay.
Opposite art
This exhibition combines the work of two completely different artists. No similarity is sought, but rather a dialogue.
Typical of Bert Loerakker’s work is the confrontation of abstraction with a natural given. Rogier Walrecht is fascinated by the psyché of living beings and expresses this by juxtaposing people and animals in a world of their own.
Times opening:
Thursday, friday 12:00 - 18.00 PM

Artist in Residence
In the coming period, Mil Gevers and Lucas Hendrix (both from the Design Academy) will engage in an investigation at the T56 gallery to test the dynamics between 2 different but related projects. Together, they will work in the gallery’s white cube: what generates each other’s dynamics and how do they influence each other? Where one will work on a project with proportion and dimensions, the other will work on translating the world we live in into critical monumental objects. In this collaborative fluid quest, to what extent will each person’s personality be the end result of themselves?

Ambachten van Vroeger (Historical Crafts and Trades)
If you would like to see for yourself how artisans used to work in the past, visit Ambachten van Vroeger (Historical Crafts and Trades) on 1st & 2nd July. You can witness, with your own eyes, how artisans in the past created the most beautiful items with their hands.
Discover the tricks of the trade
People used to make a lot more themselves than we do today. Basically, anything they needed! People specialised more and more from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages. While the prehistoric hunter used to provide entirely for himself, Middle Age artisans joined forces in guilds and trade associations. Within these organisations, specialists were hired for certain processes.
Watch historical crafts
Don’t want to miss all these old crafts? Come to the museum on 1st & 2nd July. Tickets are €11,50 per person.

FARMING IN BRAINPORT
Agricultural innovation through Brabant Rethinkers & Go-getters
Farmers in the Eindhoven high-tech region. It is always about ASML, but what do we notice about agricultural innovation and what role does the region play in the international market?
Programme leader Geert Wilms, together with project leader Marjon Krol, are the driving forces behind the ideas incubator “Agriculture Innovation Brabant (LIB)”.
IIn the innovative entrepreneurs Carlos and Anneke Faes’s Philips Fruit Garden – “a symbol of the urban-rural connection, we have been coming here for more than 25 years” – Geert explains who he is, why he is committed to innovation and what LIB does in this regard.
In 1995, the LIB steering group was set up, says native Eindhoven resident Geert: “Actually, not much has changed. Even then, farmers were angry with the Government manure policy and the limitation of groundwater extraction for irrigation by the Province. The co-operation between the Province and ZLTO started in order to also sound a positive voice
about future smarter farming. The innovators, that is ten to fifteen percent of the entrepreneurs in our LIB network, want to move forward and think in terms of opportunities, not threats.”
This is still stimulated: “We stimulate innovation for farmers and market gardeners in Brabant, including the Brainport region. Themes
for our project support are sustainability and socialization. We look at the world from the yard. We do this horizontally - to neighbours, water, air and space - and vertically, so to suppliers and customers.”
IT TURNED GREEN
After more than 25 years at LIB, Geert has not lost an ounce of enthusiasm and the MSc. continues to sprinkle successful innovation examples. Where does his drive come from; from an agricultural background? “No, my parents didn’t have a farm. I studied at the agricultural university in Wageningen and then business administration. As a child, I wanted something in greenery or sports. It turned out to be greenery. I still do sport, now I cycle for fun. And everywhere I cycle, I come across supported projects and I can drink a coffee. The LIB trajectory is every four years - the term of the Provincial Council, after which the province and ZLTO check whether it does what it should do and whether it is still necessary. So we are now in the seventh period, I could not have imagined that at the start. It remains interesting and surprising.” Projects often take longer than the period, says Geert: “But if you continue it, something beautiful will result. Our input can make that a little easier; continue to give a little attention, sometimes also some money. Something that gets attention grows.”
‘As a child I wanted something with greenery or sports’
For Geert, the following is paramount: ”Connecting agriculture and food with all other sectors; traditional industry. VDL also has an agricultural branch, is a supplier to many agricultural companies and is also involved in innovation. Vencomatic in Eersel is pretty much the ASML of global poultry farming. Many care institutions work on a farm. In recent years I have seen more contact with high-tech. An example is crop forecasting. When are strawberries - almost three-quarters of Dutch strawberries come
“Agriculture can be socially binding. Think of care farms, but also trees, and the first vertical forest in the Netherlands. In the Trudo Tower on Strijp-S, the trees in the facade were cultivated by Van den Berk in Sint-Oedenrode, with the lightest possible root ball. The tree is actually also high-tech; the air conditioner of the city. Only this air conditioner gets better with age. Farmers and market gardeners also have land and space. They can become energy farms with production and storage for the countryside.” Design, in the sense of social design, also plays a role in this: “Farmer seeks style. Twice we had a group of students from the Design Academy Eindhoven graduate on the future of food. Good things came out of that. And for years there has been Agri meets Design during DDW. They soon appear to speak each other’s language.”
from Brabant, ed. - ripe and how big will the yield be? You want to be able to plan that, also with regard to the weather and demand, to be able to make agreements with supermarkets because you would otherwise have to throw away a lot. This is possible with artificial intelligence – from companies on the High Tech Campus Eindhoven; cameras and other bells and whistles.”
HOW DOES LIB DO THAT?
“The most important thing is that farmers come up with an idea; “Do you think that’s something?” We look at it together. And if it’s interesting, we’ll see what it takes to take it further; someone’s phone number, a stage, a project subsidy. For example, years ago we had the Vegetarian Butcher Jaap Korteweg - albeit in West Brabant - present his idea on his own farm to an audience with many livestock farmers. It was innovative thinking from the perspective of opportunities for arable farming. There was only applause at that screening: ‘Hey, I’m not being completely silly after all’.” The second theme that is paramount for LIB is aid: ,,Diversity in agriculture. Every company, every entrepreneur, location, sector is different. That makes the system more robust; from the rustic Genneper Hoeve in the middle of Eindhoven to the tipping caravan of the Fladderfarm in Oirschot, the first mobile and self-sufficient chicken shed, and to potato company Van den Borne in Reusel, which wants to achieve zero emissions with its precision agriculture with sensors, drones, data and high tech.”
SOCIAL BINDING
Furthermore, agriculture and horticulture are becoming increasingly socially embedded:
STEERING GROUP
In 1995, the Agricultural Innovation Steering Group Brabant (now LIB) was a joint initiative of ZLTO (Southern Agriculture and Horticulture Organization) and the province of North Brabant. The aim is to stimulate economically and ecologically sustainable agriculture and horticulture in the province. LIB helps people with good ideas and plans by thinking along, connecting with other parties, using network and knowledge and a financial contribution of up to 50%.
In more than a quarter of a century, this led to 786 completed projects, 105 theme meetings, 203 guest appearances at home and abroad, 85 meetings of the Biological (now: Societal) Advisory Committee, 6 evaluations by professors and an expanding network. ZLTO and the province have so far invested 13.5 million euros in projects, resulting in an innovation budget of 100 million euros.
‘Almost three-quarters of Dutch strawberries come from Brabant’
ADD VALUE
He sees shifts: ,,To international. Over the past larger projects in various sectors with other European regions. They all face the same challenges – such as the pig regions in Parma and France, around Barcelona and in Denmark – and all want to learn from each other; this is how networks were created. We also organized study trips. In this way, too, people learn how to add value, as they do in Spain and Parma, also for sustainability, a better end product and to earn more with it.”
Is the whole world also watching what is being innovated in the Brainport region? ,,Well, the whole world... We’ve had a visit from the Agriculture Minister of Big Economy California, USA. We are going to the big biological fair BIOFACH in Nürnberg, Germany. And I present what we are working on almost every year in Greece. That is well received. In terms of knowledge and entrepreneurship, the Netherlands is still a great example of how others want to do it too.”

Home in the city of lights
‘Look left’, ‘look right’ or if you have no clue at all, it’s best to ‘look both ways’. Crossing roads in London is a stressful affair; red double-decker buses, black taxis, scooters and bicycles rush past you and don’t care about your insecurities to get across. After a few days in the metropolis I breathe a sigh of relief; I return home unharmed. London is overwhelming, beautiful and ugly at the same time, the fresh green colors of spring cover the city as a soft blanket. But this city is also dark and gloomy at times – so much inequality in people’s lives that become painfully clear wherever you go. I’m glad to go back home again, to Eindhoven, the city I came to love.
When I moved from Rotterdam and came to live in Eindhoven more than 20 years ago, I thought it was just a big village. Would I ever get used to it and feel at home here? Even though Rotterdam and Eindhoven are only 120 kilometers apart, they were 2 separate worlds to me. In Eindhoven everyone
seemed to know each other, sometimes even from kindergarten, they shared history together. In Rotterdam I could be anonymous if I wanted to. It also seemed to go a bit slower down south. If I had an appointment, the first 10 minutes - at least - were dedicated to discussing directions and routes one had taken to get to the location agreed. Soon after comments followed such as ‘oh, you are definitely not from here, I can clearly hear that. Almost apologetically I mentioned that I indeed came from Rotterdam but was born in Arnhem. I was definitely not used to so much social talk beforehand, in the west it was more like ‘rolling up your sleeves and let’s get on with it”, social talk was for later.
To me the language spoken in the Eindhoven area also led to some confusion. For example, an older lady asked me if I already had ‘den aord, to which I replied, somewhat surprised - it was summer - that we did indeed have a fireplace (haard), but that we didn’t use it that much at this time of year. Little did I know that she asked if I had settled down and felt at ease. Or my brother-in-law who told me that he had been ‘aangereden’ at six in the morning. ‘Aanrijden’ turned out to be the Brabant equivalent of leaving, not being from this region the association was a serious accident. Then there were the confusing prepositions such as ‘onder’ and ‘langs’ – onder voetbal and langs iemand zitten, I found it all quite challenging and sometimes felt like a real outsider.
It was about time to start integrating in Eindhoven and gradually let go of Rotterdam. Like all Eindhoven citizens befit I read the Eindhovens Dagblad in which I came across a vacancy for an English teacher at a language institute. I got the job and this opened up the oyster that Eindhoven still was to me. Once open, there were many more pearls in the shell; beautiful encounters, amazing life stories, resilience and positivity all came to light. The language school is now my own and the world passes me by – our students come from all over the world and try to settle down in our fine city. Not always easy, I can relate to that. It’s now my turn to make newcomers feel welcome and at home, at home in Eindhoven, our beautiful city.

What and how will we eat in 2050? Will we grow our own meat, do cellular agriculture or grow edible eco-systems on the windowsill? Chloé’s goal is for us to become more efficient herbivores. It is time we no longer control our environment, she says in this interview. It is time we adapt ourselves to be able to live better with raw materials further down the food pyramid.
Food Futurist, Chloé Rutzerveld, has already made a name for herself during her Industrial Design studies at TU/e with her critical and futuristic vision of food: “During my Bachelor’s Degree work at TNO in 2014, 3D printing of food was a hype. It mainly concerned biscuits, sweets and chocolates in nice shapes; food that I don’t call food. That shouldn’t be the goal
what are the options? And can we use technology to shorten the production chain? That is how my idea was born: What if we print an edible ecosystem? A basic structure with seeds and spores that grow into a complete dish on people’s windowsills. It should have an edible substrate of, for example, agar-agar, in a geometrically printed form, after which natural growth takes over. Imagine: the taste and smell intensify, the dish develops until you find it ready to harvest.”
Cultured meat project In Vitro ME was your very first food design project at TU/e.
of 3D printing, I thought. I understood that the technology was in its infancy and needed further development, but there wasn’t really a vision to work towards. It kept me busy. If we want to make real food, healthy, with nutritional value, something crunchy with structure,
“And actually the reason why I do what I do. That project brought everything together for me: art, design, science, technology and speculative design around social food issues. I wanted to know how cultured meat is made, what it takes. I am inspired by technology and science, I want to question that. Because it’s nice and easy, isn’t it; we do want a sustainable and animal-friendly alternative to
‘Eating more than we need is also food waste’
meat, continue to eat meat but do nothing for it ourselves. One of my main questions: how far are carnivores willing to go to continue eating meat?
To hold up a mirror to carnivores, I designed a bioreactor jewel. You can connect that to your vascular system and use it to grow your own meat. The reactions that provoked: ‘If this is the future of eating meat, I’d rather be vegan’. That’s what I meant! Despite progress, there are still mixed reactions to the idea of, one day, eating cultured meat. These transitions are so slow.”
Just like your own transition to food futurist? “In 2015, Edible Growth was exhibited at the Boerhaave Museum Foodtopia Expo, Leiden. Recently graduated, I started my own food design studio, where I gave workshops ‘Digestive Food’; about looking differently at food waste. That is not only about the leftovers and bread crusts that you throw away, but also about more food than we need. Excessive dining or drinks, for example, is also food waste. Even if we eat exactly what we need, our body only absorbs about 75 percent of the nutrients. So much goes into sewer, fascinating. The core of food waste therefore lies with ourselves, in the body, in our Western diet. Everything too much and at once; lots of empty calories, too high in protein and carbohydrates. To give the body time to break it down, I wanted to encapsulate food in the order of digestion. Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. To show participants how the saliva enzyme, amylase, converts carbohydrates into sugars, we ate a completely balanced menu. A conceptual lunch as a practical experiment”
Can we replicate the crunchy structure of lettuce on a macro scale and combine it with the juiciness of tomato?
Designing credible future food is difficult, says Chloé: “If something is too far removed from what we know, it will not look edible. This has to do with shape, colour and texture, but also with what happens in our brains when we look at something. If it looks like something we know, we are more inclined to eat it. There are Artificial Intelligence systems that can generate shapes and textures from existing texts, images and data that we do not know, but that do give an edible impression. You combine that with your own creativity. What I find interesting is decoupling the opti-
know, and with that we make it very difficult for ourselves. Many meat substitutes are therefore highly processed; you want to turn a pear into an apple. But if you work on the basis of creativity, the optimal feeding and sustainable production of raw materials, then you separate this from the eating experience, enjoyment and the cultural layer of food.
We in the Netherlands have a lot of knowledge of all those steps and the psychology of the food experience through smell, colour, taste and texture. However, that knowledge does not align because science is practiced in its own tunnel or is seen from a commercial point of view. It is the art and design world that can provide the imagination that is needed.”
Together with Utrecht University, Next Nature Network and Organism Studios you developed the Future Food Formula, an installation about growth recipes. Can you explain what this is?
“All crops are influenced by factors such as the intensity and spectrum of light, water, CO2 and soil pH. In the Future Food Formula installation, people can sit at a touchscreen with ten growth factors and immediately see how that affects the crop. The colours of light alone provide the flavour of a tomato or how a lettuce plant grows. Because you know how a plant reacts to a certain factor, you can control that very well in vertical farming. In this way you can, as it were, design your own crop.”
mal nourishment of our body from the pleasure of eating. Nutritious basic ingredients can then be produced very sustainably and efficiently from cells or micro-organisms, less limited by their natural form or, for example, the climate. A powder, texture chunk, cell custard; almost every new form of food production provides a basic ingredient that you have to do something with. At a higher level, this involves 3D printing or other digital production technique.”
The manufacturability of food is becoming very real, but are people open to it?
“In 2023, technology and science are not the limiting factor, but our imagination and consumer acceptance! Because people wouldn’t buy it otherwise or don’t know how to prepare and use it, we replicate meat substitutes to look like steaks and sausages that already exist, purely for consumers. It has to resemble what we
Is that what you understand by the Food Future: that we ourselves will be at the controls in time?
“On the contrary. It is high time that we no longer control our environment, food and animals, but adapt ourselves to be able to live better with raw materials lower in the food pyramid. A shift from ego to eco! We can say ‘let’s eat completely plant-based’, but people are not optimally equipped for this anatomically. As omnivores, we lack the right type of bacteria to break down the tough cell walls of plants and we rely heavily on technology and other animals to pre-digest our food. In collaboration with the ARTIS Groote Museum, microbiologists from Micropia and Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, I am conducting research for a new project into what we can learn from specialized herbivores. I will make speculative anatomical models of how we might adapt ourselves to become more efficient herbivores.” n
INSTALLATION
The new installation Cellular Alchemy - Explo ring the future of cell based food, about cellular agriculture, can be seen during the upcoming edition of Lowlands, and afterwards in the Space Farming Expo in the Evoluon. For the second half of 2023 and 2024, Chloé is working on the project Eating Tubes - An Anatomy Lesson for the 21st Century. This exhibition will be on view in the autumn of 2024 in the ARTIS Groote Museum, Amsterdam.
