Learning, living and enlivening
Voilà! Here is the September edition of Eindless, in which we look ahead to a cracking, promising cultural season. Theatres, museums and concert halls in Eindhoven, Helmond and the surrounding area again open their doors for inspiring performances, events, concerts and exhibitions. Makers show their discoveries and 80 years of liberation is celebrated.
For students, the month of September not only marks the start of a new academic year, but also a period of new encounters and personal growth. Whether you study at Fontys, TU/e, SUMMA, Strabrecht or Pius X College or follow Practical Education, it is a time full of discoveries and possibilities. Eindless invites you to broaden your horizons. Our Brainport region excels in technological innovation, it also has a rich nightlife and cultural scene. From festivals and exhibitions to intimate theatre performances, these are highlights that offer relaxation and form a valuable addition to your studies. When I was a student, I loved going to the theatre or the cinema: they were trips that stimulated me to think creatively, broadened my world and somehow also provided balance to an intensive student life. You will certainly find something to your liking. But this new season also offers ‘ordinary’ residents, new or established, the opportunity to reconnect with the art and heritage world around us, which presents itself to us like a pantry: richly sorted and well-stocked.
Let us give the stages, galleries and rooms our presence and enthusiasm and thus enliven our co-existence. We are also increasingly seeing inclusive and connecting initiatives that bring communities closer together, and we are also paying attention to this in this edition of Eindless. We hope that Eindless inspires you to see the connections between learning and living, innovation and culture, and the communities within the Brainport Region. Let us also discover, grow and celebrate together in the coming season. Enjoy reading and have a fantastic new season!

Green city = social city
Brainporter: Rik Thijs
As one of the greenest cities in our country, Eindhoven has beautiful parks on its outskirts, such as the Genneper Parken, Dommelvallei, the Wielewaal and Philips de Jonghpark. The Brainport region also has a lot of greenery, such as De Groote Heide and Van Gogh National Park. Alderman for climate and energy, land and greening in Eindhoven, Rik Thijs advocates a revolution of green and growth.
‘Green is important. It provides a pleasant living environment for people and animals. Green provides cooling during hot days, collects water during heavy rainfall and offers space for relaxation. People feel better in a green environment, we can no longer do without it. If more homes are built in the city centre and Brainport continues to grow, we will have to create even more greenery. Because even though there is already a lot of it in our city, it is not enough. People want to be able to enjoy greenery up close, also in the city centre. In recent years we have seen that the summers are getting warmer and that it can almost reach 40 degrees here. And this year we all experienced that the heavy rainfall that seemed to have no end. What are we going to do? I will take you with me.
In a few years…
… you will walk from a green city centre with at least 50 trees to a green Clausplein to sit on a bench under the trees. You will have a drink on a green Wilhelminaplein and then relax in Victoriapark where the river De Gender flows. Or you can walk along a green Dommel through the city. People who come to live, shop or work in the city centre can always enjoy greenery nearby.
… Eindhoven residents and people from the Brainport municipalities visit the Wielewaal. A gigantic valuable park that was privately owned for a hundred years by Frits Philips, among others. In 2022 we, as a municipality, purchased the De Wielewaal estate, and in 2025 we hope to open it to the public. Research has already shown that the park improves people’s health.
… the public space in neighbourhoods has been significantly greened with flowerbeds and newly planted trees. As a municipality, we are going to focus on this, where possible together with residents. More greenery in the neighbourhood increases the quality of life and strengthens social cohesion. For us, a green city is the same as a social city!
This is what the municipality can do, but everyone can contribute to a greener and futureproof Brainport. It’s very simple: remove paving slabs from your garden and replace them with plants, opt for a green roof or facade or create a facade garden. How great would it be if we all embraced this green revolution?
They can’t talk, but I am sure that all the birds, insects and small animals in our city would say: Thank you!’
De Wielewaal Estate
The purchase of the Eindhoven estate De Wielewaal has proven to be a valuable investment, as shown by a joint study by CBS, RIVM and the Foundation for Sustainable Development. The estate, once owned by Frits Philips, yields €3.8 million in social benefits annually, such as lower healthcare costs and more recreational opportunities. From 2025, De Wielewaal will be partially accessible to the public.
€20 million for regional projects
In 2024 the Eindhoven Metropolitan Region has been allocated €20 million as part of the latest Regional Deal. This funding is intended for the ‘At home in Brainport’ programme, which includes seven projects that focus on social challenges in the Region.
These projects include Kunsthal Helmond, De Berkenschutse, the Kempenmuseum, Urban Sports & Culture, Brainport Libraries, Inclusive work within the circular economy, and the greening of the Helmond Stationskwartier. Since 2018, the Brainport Eindhoven Regional Deal has been investing in the broad prosperity of the region. There are three pillars: improving the level of facilities, attracting and retaining talent, and stimulating social innovations. With an investment of €130 million from the Government and €240 million from the Region itself, projects can be used to work on a stronger economic and social position of the Brainport Eindhoven region.

HIP & HAPPENING
BACK TO SCHOOL: EXPAT EDUCATION
Reeta BalakrishnanWeber
Indonesia is a vast and diverse Southeast Asian archipelago with over 17,000 islands. With over 270 million inhabitants. The official language is Bahasa Indonesian, and most of the population is Muslim. Indonesia has one of the largest economies in the region, with key sectors including agriculture, mining, and manufacturing.
Approximately 380,000 people with an Indonesian migration background live in the Netherlands. Several thousand Indonesians, ranging from 2,000 to 5,000, live permanently or temporarily in our region. These expats in the high-tech industry, students at TU/e, and established Indonesian families contribute to the cultural diversity and economy of the area, with activities such as the Pasar Malam and organizations like PPI Eindhoven providing support and networking opportunities.
Teachers, after parents, have the most significant impact on a child’s education. They manage to stimulate curiosity and increase passion and interest. The teachers are, in all respects, the beating heart of the school. Education consists of facilitating the student’s cognitive development, the encounter with the world, and the acquisition of skills and abilities. For education to exist, someone must guide the child towards the right path and possess specific skills. The teacher has the task of guiding them with his experiences and his culture, an even more profound and more important responsibility if they are children of expatriates.
FILE-ALT AILÈN GAMBERONI
‘It is not easy to leave your comfort zone’
Reeta, of Indian origin, seems born for this role with her contagious smile full of energy. Born and raised in Jakarta, she grew up in Indonesia’s rich and vast cultural environment, a substantial international melting pot with over 17,000 islands. Over 1,300 distinct ethnic groups, including significant Austronesian and Melanesian cultures, contribute to its rich traditions, languages, and customs, making Indonesia a melting pot of diversity.
With 20 primary schools and two schools for special primary education SALTO is the second-largest school board for primary education in Eindhoven. Where does your passion for teaching come from?
‘My passion for teaching came from one of my junior high school teachers in Jakarta. First, I wanted to be a math teacher, but later, I developed a passion for languages. So, I pursued my dream of becoming an English teacher. Throughout the year, I realized that a teacher who spreads positivity, genuinely enjoys teaching, and engages with students is an unforgettable teacher to their students, especially in the early years. Now, as a teaching assistant, I still find it very rewarding. I can oversee the needs of the students as I am responsible for supporting a group of children and ensuring that they get the most out of their school life and personal development in the classroom. I usually discuss my daily/weekly tasks with the class teacher: working one-on-one with pupils or in groups. Sometimes, I also assist the teacher in delivering lessons and activities in the classroom.’
What are the needs of the kids who attend your school?
‘First, when we talked about expat children, they all need a soft landing to build their confidence and feel safe in their new school environment. They need to speak and understand a particular English or Dutch. Most of our students already speak and understand English because some speak it as a second language. However, some have yet to gain basic knowledge of Dutch. They need to know at least one of the languages because 50% of our classes are taught in English and 50% in Dutch. Our bilingual concept is ambitious and sets high standards for children. We are also a language-friendly school, and the children’s language development is at the heart. Special attention is given to the children’s social-emotional development in the school.’
How can you help them to remember where they are coming from in an integration process?
‘As Events Coordinator, I work closely with parents and teachers to organize cultural events that make our students and parents feel welcome in our school community. We want our students to feel at home. This is one of the many beautiful moments for them to share stories, traditions, and food from their home country.’
I would appreciate your advice for those new to the city struggling to make new friends.
‘When I came to Eindhoven 17 years ago, after unpacking, I started finding information about activities in the surroundings through my Dutch neighbors. I knew I wasn’t the only expat spouse at that time with a two-year-old. I visited the library and started having small conversations with the people who work there; maybe they knew a group of moms with toddlers. Social media wasn’t as booming as it is now. I joined a few groups to get out of the house. Then, when I built my small social network, I started looking for a Dutch course. Knowing the basic language of the country you are living in is crucial so you know a little about the culture. It comes with time and acceptance.’
What is your favorite place in Eindhoven, and why?
‘The Genneperpark area. It holds an exceptional memory for me in the first few years we moved to Eindhoven. I used to go there a lot with my son and watch the animals on the farm. It is one of those moments I will never get back. It is so beautiful in all seasons!’
And what is still missing in the city, in your opinion?
‘Eindhoven is growing fast and is a very convenient city to live in. Its location makes it easier to travel to big cities like Amsterdam and The Hague, and thanks to its airport, we can travel to other European cities. As a foodie, many restaurants in the city center, especially the cafes, need a more extensive children’s play area. It would be nice to have a few more, especially family-friendly ones.’
COLUMN MATHILDE
A wasted vacation day
For weeks now, I’ve been hearing the same questions over and over again: “When are you going on vacation?” or “Have you already been?” When I tell people that I’m staying home this summer, I’m often met with a sympathetic look… Not going on vacation? Not even for a week? No, not even for a week. I’m perfectly happy staying at home. No stress from crowded airports or congested roads, no “black Saturdays,” complaining tourists, or masses of people gathered together, and no toohot, too-wet, or too-cold weather. I’m fine with skipping the summer exodus for once. Plus, I don’t have to feel guilty about CO2 emissions or leaving a footprint behind. I ignore the media’s influence, promoting far-off vacations for months as if they’re essential for a happy life.
This summer, I decided to simply enjoy the small things without causing much harm. On my first few days off, I relished the thought of not having to set an alarm and not hearing it go off at 6:30 a.m. To my surprise, I woke up at 6:30 a.m. sharp, like every single day. So, no sleeping in. But I did enjoy having the entire day ahead of me and knowing I didn’t have to do anything. I spent time pottering in the garden, sipping my cappuccino with two purring cats beside me, and even finishing a book. And of course the silence around me - it was as if a soft blanket had been spread over Eindhoven. Less traffic, less noise, and no crowds on the streets. The Olympic Games were on. Even though attending the Opening Ceremony or experiencing the Games at Stade de France would have been amazing, I watched and enjoyed a lot from home, especially Femke’s and Sifan’s performances.
Sitting comfortably in my lovely garden with the newspaper at hand, these peaceful days at home got me thinking. If I feel like it, I can take the car and go somewhere. I go out for dinner when I want to and treat myself to yet another summer dress that I don’t need. Yes, it’s easy to say you’re not going on vacation when things are this pleasant. I skimmed the front page of the Volkskrant and it made my holiday-or-not-holiday feelings fade. I saw displaced children scavenging for food on a massive garbage dump, a little girl in a red, tattered T-shirt staring into the void. For these children, there will never be a vacation. Not now and probably never. On the next page, Dutch athletes proudly displayed their gold medals, celebrating their success.
Ours is a world of stark contrasts, and the human mind seems to be able to accept that. But this day at home, which started so well, ended up feeling like a bit of a lost day. In life, there is a lot of inequality. There are so many people, so many children, I would wish they could celebrate the summer and go on vacation, but they simply cannot go. Because of illness, because it’s too expensive, or because of war.
Vacation… who invented it? In the Netherlands, and in many other countries, it’s a hard-won labor right; unions and labor movements fought for it. Many people feel they rightly deserve a vacation, and even more than once a year. And me? I certainly agree. If you work all year, it’s great to have some form of reward. If only it could be like that for everyone.

This was followed by a long-term collaboration with the Berlin Philharmonic and partnerships with internationally renowned conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Claudio Abbado, and Simon Rattle. Zimerman’s performances of romantic repertoire, in particular, are highly acclaimed worldwide. The master pianist has received numerous awards for his work, including the Gramophone Classical Music Award for Piano in 2023.

SUN 1 SEPTEMBER Coco can do it!
MUZIEKGEBOUW EINDHOVEN | 11 AM | PUPPETRY (2+)
Today, Coco is going to fly for the first time! ‘All birds can fly’, says Mama. So Coco surely can too, right? But what if she can’t? What happens up in the blue sky, where you can fly with friends and catch tasty bugs? Or down on the ground, where you might fall hard and where the cat prowls? Experience Coco’s adventure in this cheerful musical puppet show. Coco and her friends from the beloved book come to life in the hands of Jogchem Jalink, puppeteer for shows like Sesame Street and the Boterhamshow. Don’t miss it and find out if Coco can really fly!
Please note: this concert is completely spoken in Dutch.
SUN 29 SEPTEMBER
MUZIEKGEBOUW EINDHOVEN | 11 AM | THEATER (2+)
Just as you are
In the visual theater performance, you are taken into the world of a little elephant named Little Snuf. Little Snuf can’t walk in line because there is so much to see! He is constantly being called back: ‘In line, Little Snuf!’ But Snuf is wonderfully stubborn and does things his own way: he is allowed to be just as he is. Klein Amsterdam Producties creates a musical and visual theater performance for ages 2 and up based on the popular picture book ‘Just the Way You Are’ by Jonny Lambert
Please note: this concert is completely spoken in Dutch.
With one eye open
Discover the hidden world of graffiti photography in the exhibition ‘With One Eye Open’. From the photography that has spread graffiti worldwide to contemporary graffiti writers who consider photos as final works.
It offers both a glimpse into the hidden world of graffiti and impressive photographic projects. Works and projects by international, national and local photographers and graffiti artists. Documentation in graffiti is crucial because of the temporary, transient and often illegal nature of the art form.
ONAMATOPEE | EXHIBITION UNTIL 20 SEPTEMBER 2024
Discover the city. Book a city walk.
Feel the energy of Eindhoven, known as the city with many faces. You join other interested people, in smaller groups. Can also be undertaken alone! Interaction with the guide makes it special. The walk can be provided bilingually (NL/ENG). Items that may be reviewed are industrial heritage, design, street art and Eindhoven’s roots. Of course, the tour does not miss a short visit to the historic Philips Museum workshop. The place where Gerard Philips started the first Philips factory together with his father Frederik in 1891.
Every Saturday in September at 11 AM. The city walk starts from Eindhoven Tourist Information/VVV in the Station and lasts 1.5 hours. Cost: €12.50 p.p. including Eindhoven gadget & coffee/tea discount voucher. Reservations can be made up to 24 hours in advance.
TRANSMISSION / Huld, Lilli & The Roach
No fewer than two exhibitions await you: TRANSMISSION by Amsterdam collective Touki Delphine, visualises with buzzing brake lines, hissing hoses and glowing reflectors the mysterious mycelium network: the hidden web of fungi that keeps almost all plants and trees on earth alive.
Life and death, empathy and the predictive brain, are the basic ingredients in the two recent installations by Finland’s Maija Tammi. Using photos, text, video and animation, she tells the life stories of a chameleon, a grasshopper and a cockroach, which she almost familiarly christens Hulda, Lilli & The Roach
A Tree, Alice Ladenburg + Ollie Palmer
The exhibition features research and works in which artists explore the relationship between humans and trees and ways in which we can relate more closely to their temporalities. To what extent is anthropomorphism a way of strengthening the connection between humans and trees or an anthropocentric danger that makes it impossible to gain objective knowledge?
A Tree is about plant control, plant knowledge and the interaction between plants and humans with a specific focus on trees. Participating artists: Sanne Vaassen, Gerbrand Burger, Hira Nabi, Manjot Kaur, Ingela Ihrman, Goldin+Senneby, Alice Ladenburg, Roderick Hietbrink.
WELCOME 2 DA JUNGLE
Aware Dream State/Marijn van de Beek
With the message “Everyone must conquer a place in this jungle”, graffiti artist Marijn van de Beek sets about creating his ‘jungle’. Based on the idea that we are all connected to each other and thus form a whole with the greater, everyone will have to conquer their own place in this urbanised environment. With spray can and brush, the gallery space is worked on to create a kaleidoscopic total experience, taking the theme step by step and, from his tree house, making it known to the world.
Under the title Aware Dream State, Marijn has mainly worked on the streets. Now, for the first time in a controlled indoor environment, he will bring together the feel of the street and the natural imagery of the jungle.

A connecting conversation about freedom/ Eindhoven in dialogue
With everyone’s unique point of view, we can illuminate the concept of freedom from many angles and begin to see it with new eyes. What does freedom mean to you? What is your best experience of freedom? And what is your wishful thinking about freedom? With the uniqueness of everyone’s point of view, we can illuminate the concept of freedom from many sides and start seeing it with new eyes.

Young Culture Eindhoven, one of the
talents:
Writers camp Pitstop & Texts on the street NICOLAS DIAZ
Twenty years old and a real young creative. Youth worker and owner of Pitstop, Matheus Sales de Moura, didn’t have to think twice when suggesting Nicolas Diaz as a young talent JC Eindhoven: ‘He is also the one who will make TikTok videos for Jong Cultuur. Nicolas used to make beats, write texts and as an assistant youth worker at Pitstop he brings a fresh perspective on youth culture in 2024. He is very enthusiastic to participate.’
We are also enthusiastic and ask Nicolas himself: ‘Who are you and where are you from?’ I am Nicolas Diaz, born in 2004 in Ibarra, Ecuador, but with Colombian roots. ‘Generation Z is known as digitally skilled, socially aware and resilient. Which word suits you best?’ Socially aware, because sociality is the most relevant thing in my life now and I think it is something beautiful. ‘What do you do?’ I work as an assistant youth worker at Pitstop and spend my free time watching films and writing stories/texts. ‘What drives you as an artist?’ I have an abundance of ideas that I want to share. Not everything has to remain a concept.

Scents and Colors - passing on stories
The theme of the corso parade 2024
To commemorate is to relive, to pass on, to tell stories. Pass on what you think is important. Your version of the story, the story in your words. Passing on stories and keeping history and experiences alive.
Dutch Legends, Folktales and Tales were therefore chosen for the parade floats. These beautiful stories are written in dahlia creations. The parade floats and the dahlia-objects will go public on Sunday, September 15 to fascinate, amaze and astound with beautiful stories in flowers.

The story of a bridge
They walked in separately to one of the first Burst your Bubble evenings. Just like all the other attendees, slightly hesitant. The opera singer and the teacher. One Ukrainian and the other from the Netherlands. We saw them again afterwards at our evenings, where the connection between internationals and locals is central. Where we build bridges, as we call it. So, they ended up together... and a connection was made. Carla and Anna. And they never lost each other again. Carla wanted to do something for Anna’s country, the dire situation kept her busy. So, she called her. ‘Do you want to help me with a project for Ukraine? I want to do something.’ Anna was touched by Carla’s directness. ‘Of course!’ was her reaction. Together they came up with an art project. A thousand small boxes painted in the blue and yellow colours of Ukraine and sold for €20 each. Painting will be a weekly project on Wednesday afternoons, in Carla’s garden and shed on Doelenstraat in Eindhoven.
I will be at the first painting afternoon and will be working with her for a while. All nationalities will be there: Ukrainians, Italians, Dutch, Afghans, you name it. The project connects. The project is quiet, it speaks and unites. Because doing something together for the world goes beyond borders. Anna and Carla will continue. The second shipment of a thousand is already waiting. It could well be that they will show this at one of the Burst your Bubble evenings. I would love that. This is a story about how connection works. It shows how easy it actually is to choose to do so…

Founder Jump Movement
Do it yourself. Your bridge to build.
You will probably also meet people in the course of your day, about whom you might want to know more. Then it starts with making a connection. In your own environment. So, practice the following: The next time you are in the lift, in a queue at the supermarket, at the bus stop or on the train, look around you and look someone in the eye. Give a nod as a greeting and a greeting hand, a ‘good morning’. And for the brave among us, give a compliment then go and do your thing. Just notice what this does to you. How your heart opens, and you take that with you into your day.
Burst your Bubble is a method of the Jump Movement Foundation, aimed at connecting people. Burst your Bubble & Eindless would like to let you look at our city and the people who live there with different eyes so that you can see opportunities to learn more, make more connections and thus live together in an inclusive city, where everyone is welcome.

Bobotie for Heritage Day
24 september 2024
Dit jaar in het teken van routes, netwerken & connecties
Heritage Day is a South African bank holiday celebrating the country’s diverse culture, traditions, and heritage. Heritage Day was introduced in 1995 to encourage all South Africans to celebrate their cultural heritage and show respect for each other’s traditions.
On Heritage Day, barbecues (braais) are held across South Africa, cultural events organised and traditional dances and music performed. It is a day of National Unity and Pride, where people celebrate their diverse backgrounds and traditions. A great day to serve the classic dish Bobotie.

Carrie
Carrie Shimakawa
Expats often find themselves in a bubble of fellow expatriates, seeking support and advice on childcare, health, employment, and real estate. Locals traditionally rely on their networks of friends and family for support. Although expats and locals may initially exist within separate bubbles, these bubbles have porous borders, with people frequently moving between them.
Carrie, who moved to Hilversum in 2013 and settled in Eindhoven in 2014, has spent nearly a decade raising three boys with her Japanese-born husband. Her commitment to weekly Dutch lessons was pivotal for her swift integration into Dutch society. ‘There wasn’t a grand, champagne popping moment when Eindhoven suddenly felt like home,’ Carrie explained. ‘The feeling of home came in dribs and drabs along the way, with each new phase of my life as a mother and from making both international and Dutch friends.’
Having transcended her ‘expat bubble’, Carrie now sees her Dutch friends as essential to her social life. However, she notes a challenge: ‘My Dutch friends have a longer established support network of family and friends, and are often less able to meet up. It is not a Dutch thing, it’s a locals first thing: if you haven’t been uprooted you aren’t desperately searching for a new social network.’
Expat experience varies widely among individuals, influenced by factors such as family status, income, care responsibilities, language skills, and social circles. Race and ethnicity also impact these experiences. Carrie, who is English, is often mistaken for a local - until, as she puts it: ‘I open my mouth and people hear a foreign accent.’ Her husband Masaki, originally from Japan, is often seen as a ‘foreigner’ despite his partial Dutch upbringing.
Masaki and Carrie speak Dutch and English at home and their three boys have a predominantly Dutch identity. Their family exemplifies the rich tapestry of experiences and complexities within the expat community.
Eindhoven’s growth as a brainport region demands a talented workforce from around the globe, setting the stage for a fast-paced internationalisation. Ankita Mukherjee sat down for a coffee chat with British expat Carrie Shimakawa, a resident of the expat-heavy neighborhood of Meerhoven.
‘I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can’t read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can’t even reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses.’ - Bill Bryson
