WHAT IS
SMALL-SIDED FOOTBALL? Small-sided football is a term commonly used in Europe which simply refers to small-sided football such as 5, 6, and 7aside games. In the UK there are approximately 1.3 million people playing in competitive small-sided leagues, and a further 0.9 million playing small-sided football socially, and this number continues to grow year on year. Small sided football is also the largest grassroots sport in the world, and thus is open to all, promoting social inclusion, participation and healthy living. Essentially, small-sided football is available to anyone regardless of ability.
4
WHAT ABOUT THE FA? Traditionally the FA has represented all forms of football in the UK. However, the FA’s primary focus is on 11aside football and not small-sided football. In May 2012 the European Commission in Brussels recognised small-sided football (or minifootball as it is known in Europe) as a separate sport apart from 11aside football which therefore required a governing body for each member country and a European Governing Body. This effectively meant that small-sided football required a UK governing body separate to the FA on the basis that small-sided football was classified by the European Commission as a separate sport.
WHO ARE THE UNITED KINGDOM 5ASIDE & 6ASIDE ASSOCIATION? The United Kingdom 5aside & 6aside Association (the UKMA) is the national governing body for small-sided football in the UK. We provide league affiliation to all small-sided football providers in the UK and facility accreditation to all centres who have either an astroturf or a sports hall that is at least 4 badminton courts wide. The UKMA is an independent non-profit making body governed by our members and committed to developing small-sided football. The role of the UKMA, as the official governing body, is to promote and regulate good governance of small-sided football in the UK and increase participation in the sport by developing opportunities for players at grassroots level, without discrimination. We hold the licence to operate the England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland national 6aside teams, who represent their countries in international competitions.
