WHAT IS
SMALL SIDED FOOTBALL? Small sided football is a term commonly used in Europe which simply refers to small-sided football such as 5, 6, and 7-a-side games. In the UK there are approximately 1.3 million people playing in competitive small-sided leagues, and a further 0.9 million playing small sided football socially, and this number continues to grow year on year. Small sided football is also the largest grassroots sport in the world, and thus is open to all, promoting social inclusion, participation and healthy living. Essentially, small sided football is available to anyone regardless of ability.

MINIFOOTBALL ASSOCIATION WHO ARE THE UNITED KINGDOM MINIFOOTBALL ASSOCIATION? The United Kingdom Minifootball Association (the UKMA) is the national governing body for small sided football in the UK. We provide league affiliation to all small-sided football providers in the UK and facility accreditation to all centres who have either an astroturf or a sports hall that is at least 4 badminton courts wide. The UKMA is an independent non-profit making body governed by our members and committed to developing small sided football. The role of the UKMA, as the official governing body, is to promote and regulate good governance of minifootball in the UK and increase participation in the sport by developing opportunities for players at grassroots level, without discrimination. We run the UK National 6-a-side Championships each year in Birmingham, which is the biggest tournament of its kind, as well as holding the licence to operate the England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland national 6-a-side teams to represent their countries in European and worldwide competitions. The UKMA is authorised to operate in the UK under the statute of the European Minifootball Federation (the EMF). The UKMA is on the Executive Committee of the EMF and the home nations teams participate annually in the European 6-a-side Championships.

A MESSAGE FROM
TIM OLLERENSHAW
As Honorary President of the UKMA I am delighted to offer you the opportunity to partner with us in what is becoming the most exciting time for small sided football in the UK. Over the past few years the UK Minifootball Association has grown rapidly, following recognition from the European Commission that small-sided football is a separate sport from 11-a-side football, and each year the number of players and venues affiliating to us continues to grow. I understand that as a small-sided league
provider or a facility that you are instrumental in the growth and development of the sport of small sided football in your region. As such, the UKMA will provide you with support, advice and guidance in promoting your leagues in your area and will work to develop future funding streams that you can apply for. The UKMA also grants our affiliated league members the opportunity to have a say in the development of the sport in the UK, and the distribution of any future funding that we may receive, by being offered the chance to accept one of the limited available seats for members on our Executive Board. This will then ensure that the sport of small sided football is developed by our members for our members and their affiliated teams and players. I hope that you enjoy looking over all of the benefits of affiliating your leagues or facilities to the UKMA in this brochure, and I look forward to welcoming you on board as a member of the growing family of smallsided football in the UK.

WHO ARE
THE EMF? The European Minifootball Federation is the governing body for minifootball in Europe and currently has 32 countries as members. The EMF has been officially recognised by the European Commission and operates international minifootball competitions, including the European 6-a-side Championships which is held annually in a member country, and is called ‘miniEURO’. Details of all of the EMF’s plans and activities may be found on their website at www.eurominifootball.com.
WHAT ABOUT THE FA? Traditionally the FA has represented all forms of football in the UK. However, the FA’s primary focus is on 11-a-side football and not minifootball or small-sided football. In May 2012 the European Commission in Brussels recognised minifootball as a separate sport apart from 11-a-side football which therefore required a governing body for each member country and a European Governing Body. This effectively meant that minifootball in the UK required a governing body separate to the FA on the basis that minifootball was classified by the European Commission as a separate sport.
Germany take a penalty at ‘miniEURO 2014’. 77

WHY CHOOSE
FACILITY ACCREDITATION? As a UKMA accredited facility, your venue will be the approved location, recommended by the UKMA, for all minifootball organisers in the UK to use. Having our accreditation board displayed at your centre will show all visitors that your facilities are of the highest standard for 5, 6 and 7 a-side football to be played. Over the next few years it is likely that the FA’s role in small sided football will be reduced and the government will channel funding for small sided football through other sources. As the governing body for small sided football in the UK, the UKMA stands in line to receive most of this funding. Accrediting to the UKMA means that you will be eligible to apply for grants from the UKMA, (for example for a new pitch surface, goals or other equipment) from any funding we receive now or in the future. Only UKMA accredited facilities can apply for this grant.
HOW TO APPLY To apply for facility accreditation, you will need to fill in our online registration form at www. ukminifootball.co.uk/Facility-Accreditation. aspx. Following this we will arrange an accreditation visit with you to check that your facility is suitable for small sided football and to approve your membership to the UKMA.
