CREATE
Making campus safe and inclusive
The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) team works collaboratively with the campus community to build a common understanding and a shared vision to move ULethbridge forward. Building an inclusive culture is a collective responsibility that can only be achieved by disrupting and dismantling systemic issues that hinder the growth of historically excluded groups.

A COMMUNITY OF INSPIRING MINDS
Andrea True Joy Fox, Piiksipitaakii (BA/BEd ‘09) chose ULethbridge for her graduate program because of incredible undergrad experience here, when she shared meaningful connections with colleagues and instructors.
“As a graduate student, I love being part of the research team that collaborates on the Blackfoot Digital Arts Project and the Grasslands Project with Dr. Josephine Mills, Blackfoot Elders, faculty and students.”
“It was important for me to complete my studies on Blackfoot territory, where the University of Lethbridge is located; having that physical connection to the places my ancestors have walked through before has made it very meaningful for me.”

School of Graduate Studies Medal of Merit (Master of Education)
Teri Hartman
Support from those in the Faculty of Education was instrumental to Teri Hartman’s success in her five-year Master of Education experience in the Curriculum and Assessment program.
“Faculty and staff are excited for you, as were those in my cohort. I made very dear friends, and we were supporting each other, walking with each other throughout this whole journey. Having a group that believes you can do it is really important.
I have tremendous gratitude especially for my supervisors, Drs. David Slomp and Robert LeBlanc. They saw a greater potential in my work than I did and it’s likely
because of their belief in it that I won the medal of merit. I think the scope and rigour of the Faculty of Education’s curriculum and assessment theme has opened up a lot of doors for my future, and I see education and schooling in a completely new light because of it.”

Alicia Anderson (BSc ’20) has always aimed high — her study of astrophysics can attest to that — and she’s now earned one of the highest honours in academia: the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. Over the 22-year history of the award, only one other Canadian physicist has earned a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, while three others have studied astronomy.
“When I first came to the University of Lethbridge as a 17-year-old, I hadn’t really planned on any of this. You start by making connections with professors, and I’ve been lucky to have really passionate professors teaching me undergraduate physics and inspiring me to join a research group and take it to the next level. I really owe it all to my department and all the professors who have taught me.”
Alicia Anderson (BSc ‘20, MSc ‘22) School of Graduate Studies Medal of Merit, Master of Science PhD student at Trinity College, University of Cambridge, UK

First Place - Shannon Healy MSc student (Biological Sciences)
58-year-old Cancer Cells
“These cells have been continuously dividing since 1964, when they were first isolated from a 44-year-old patient with colon cancer for use in future research. Using a microscope, we can see the irregularly shaped colon cells that have become cancerous and each double every 24 hours. This continuous division is the devastating hallmark of this disease, and we need to understand what makes their division different from the division of healthy cells. If we identify these differences, specific medicines can be made to target them and kill the cancerous cells. In my research, I am screening prairie plants for anti-cancer chemicals, since many of the top anti-cancer medicines are derived from plants, such as paclitaxel isolated from the Pacific yew tree that grows in Waterton Lakes National Park. These cells are critical in the research that will lead to new treatments and save millions of people. While the unfortunate reality of this situation is that the cancer cells outlived the patient from which they came, my hope is that through this research that will not be the case in the future.”

Dr. SabaHAt Nazim Master of Health Services Management (MHSM) student
What do you like the most about the program?
“The first thing that attracted me to the Master of Health Services Management (MHSM) program was the blended online and on-campus format. It provides full-time working professionals with scheduling options without compromising on work commitments.
The research, assignments and projects gives students a solid foundation to apply skills and knowledge in a variety of health settings.
How is HSM changing your career trajectory?
“Healthcare is one the fastest growing and ever evolving industries in Canada and is in constant need of highly qualified managers to lead in healthcare facilities. While I could go ahead with the licensing pathway to resume my clinical practice here in Canada, HSM has proven to be an exciting new option for me in order to advance my career in a slightly different discipline.
I am learning to plan, direct and coordinate medical and health services and polishing my leadership skills, I strive to work and engage with leaders in the field to motivate and inspire the coming generations of leaders and innovators. This program has also introduced me to a world of new opportunities in the field of patient care, finance, marketing, public relations and HR management. I aim to work in close proximity with stakeholders to bring them practical and innovative service designs, (through one of the most exciting and interactive courses in this program).”
What advice would you give?
“If you want to explore the healthcare industry and be a part of the vital team behind facility operations and functions, you should definitely enrol in this program. The MHSM at ULethbridge is fully equipped with intellectual faculty, modern teaching methods, and a warm welcoming and accessible university family.”

WE’RE HERE FOR YOU
“In 2017, I began my Master of Fine Arts in Art. I had applied to three different places and ULethbridge was one of them. Honestly, this was the place that I was most excited about once I actually visited this area. I was so excited to come study here.
Finishing my MFA and doing my PhD, that was a big accomplishment, but I wouldn’t say it was the biggest accomplishment. I would say the biggest accomplishment is actually all the relationships I’ve made here with faculty, with other students, with the community members and then just with the place itself.”
Migueltzinta Solís (MFA ‘19) is an interdisciplinary artist, writer and PhD Candidate in Cultural, Social and Political Thought
“Form relationships and network with professors and other graduate students. That support will be key for your growth as a graduate student. Also, get involved in research initiatives, conferences, committees and other relevant extracurricular activities such as Journal Club. These will equally enrich your overall learning experience.”

GOVERNMENT LOANS & GRANTS
Funding for Canadian students is also available in the form of student loans and grants. Both the federal and provincial governments offer financial aid to students who qualify. Your government loan remains interest-free as long as you remain a fulltime student.
PERSONAL STUDENT LOANS
Banks and other private financial institutions also lend money to help students fund their education. Contact your bank for information on private student loans.
