At ULethbridge, undergraduate, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows collaborate with leading researchers, like Board of Governors Research Chair Dr. Stacey Wetmore (photo, left), to find innovative solutions to today’s problems. Dr. Wetmore, a 2018 recipient of the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) Fellowship, looks at how DNA is damaged and repaired in cells. More than 100 undergraduate students and 20 graduate students have conducted research in her lab.

Master of Education –General & Educational Leadership | MEd

Study the critical challenges facing education and shape how people teach, learn and lead in schools. This program is designed for working professionals, delivered in a blended format with online learning complemented with face-to-face components in July.

Master of Education (Counselling Psychology) | MEd

Develop professional skills and certification in counselling psychology. Gain counsellor training to be a canadian certified counsellor or registered psychologist.

Master of Counselling | MC

Prepare for a career as a Canadian Certified Counsellor or Registered Psychologist. The 12-course distance program is a blend of online courses and face-to-face learning.

Master of Nursing | MN

Adult learners in the nursing profession continue life-long learning, gain additional credential and become leaders in nursing practice, education and research. Options to complete a course-based, a project, or a thesis pathway in this blended delivery program.

Master of Science in Management | MSc (Mgt)

Gain the knowledge and leadership skills to take your career to the managerial level. Our thesis-based pathway prepares you to pursue careers where research skills and scholarly knowledge are valued, as well as academic careers and further graduate studies.

MSc (Mgt) Business Analytics concentration

This experiential course-and project-based pathway prepares you to meet industry demand for analytical and data skills in an evolving digital economy. With the MSc (Mgt) BANA concentration, you’ll gain the skills to harness big data, conduct statistical analysis and data visualization. Delivered by the Dhillon School of Business, the Master of Science (Management) is offered part-time and full time on both our Calgary and Lethbridge Campuses.

Alicia Anderson (BSc ’20) has always aimed high — her study of astrophysics can attest to that — and she’s now earned one of the highest honours in academia: the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. Over the 22-year history of the award, only one other Canadian physicist has earned a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, while three others have studied astronomy.

“When I first came to the University of Lethbridge as a 17-year-old, I hadn’t really planned on any of this. You start by making connections with professors, and I’ve been lucky to have really passionate professors teaching me undergraduate physics and inspiring me to join a research group and take it to the next level. I really owe it all to my department and all the professors who have taught me.”

Co-operative Education / Internship Option

Co-operative Education is available to students in the Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc) and Master of Science in Management (MSc (Mgt)) programs. Co-operative education is an educational model that formally integrates academic study at the master’s level with relevant, paid work experience in appropriate employment fields such as government, institutions and industry. You, the University and your employer are in partnership to ensure an enriching experience toward your professional development.

Graduate Teaching Assistant Professional Development Program

The Graduate Assistant Teaching Development Program provides an opportunity for professional development in critical teaching skills, equipping graduate students to carry out their teaching duties effectively and prepare them to lead, teach and train others. Graduate students who have participated in these sessions receive formal recognition of participation, which can be valuable on a curriculum vitae when applying for academic positions, doctoral programs, post-doctoral placements, or careers outside of academia.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®)

Three Minute Thesis is a research communication competition developed by the University of Queensland that challenges graduate students to present a compelling condensation of their thesis and its significance in just three minutes in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. ULethbridge graduate students participate in this each year.

Images of Research

The Images of Research competition is a unique opportunity for graduate students to display their research, scholarly and artistic work. The aim of the competition is to provide graduate students with an artistic alternative to highlight their work, as a way to celebrate our diverse research. First Place - Shannon Healy MSc student (Biological Sciences)

58-year-old Cancer Cells

“These cells have been continuously dividing since 1964, when they were first isolated from a 44-year-old patient with colon cancer for use in future research. Using a microscope, we can see the irregularly shaped colon cells that have become cancerous and each double every 24 hours. This continuous division is the devastating hallmark of this disease, and we need to understand what makes their division different from the division of healthy cells. If we identify these differences, specific medicines can be made to target them and kill the cancerous cells. In my research, I am screening prairie plants for anti-cancer chemicals, since many of the top anti-cancer medicines are derived from plants, such as paclitaxel isolated from the Pacific yew tree that grows in Waterton Lakes National Park. These cells are critical in the research that will lead to new treatments and save millions of people. While the unfortunate reality of this situation is that the cancer cells outlived the patient from which they came, my hope is that through this research that will not be the case in the future.”

Alberta Gambling Research Institute (AGRI) is a consortium of the universities of Alberta, Calgary and Lethbridge. Its primary purpose is to support and promote research into gambling in the province.

The Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute (ARRTI) is dedicated to RNA research and training excellence in one of the fastest growing fields in the life sciences. ARRTI’s research has implications for everything from disease control to biotechnology and our understanding of evolution.

The Alberta Terrestrial Imaging Centre (ATIC) focuses on remote sensing and imaging spectroscopy, applying its research to monitoring natural resources and the environment.

The Art, Sound, & Technology Research IntersecXions (ASTeRIX) supports the research and creation of objects, narratives, and experiences that investigate intersections in the arts. Through transdisciplinary conversations and collaborations, ASTeRIX aim to generate dialogues around pressing concerns of our time and rethink what is possible.

The Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience (CCBN) provides a unique interactive environment for behavioural neuroscience research in Canada. The CCBN’s principal investigators, along with their students, study normal brain processes and processes affecting recovery from brain disorders, disease and injury.

The Canadian Centre for Research in Advanced Fluorine Technologies (C-CRAFT) is the first Canadian centre to focus on fluorine research, uniting an international team with a wide range of expertise in fluorine chemistry.

The Centre for Oral History and Tradition (COHT) seeks to further excellence in the practice of oral history in an academic milieu and in the southern Alberta community at large.

The Collaborative Health Research Institute of Southern Alberta (CHRISA) aim to produce high impact health research with the potential to enrich health across the lifespan for people living in Southern Alberta and beyond.

The Institute for Child and Youth Studies (I-CYS) is a multidisciplinary research institute committed to examining what children and youth mean as social, demographic, artistic, legal and existential categories. I-CYS fosters conversation and collaboration to create links between scholars, practitioners and community members to promote innovative, cross-disciplinary research about young people.

The Institute for Consumer and Social Well-Being (ICSW) is a research team seeking to advance the well-being of consumers and society. ICSW work is focused on social change marketing, social responsibility/sustainability, and not-for-profit marketing.

The Institute for Space Imaging Science (ISIS) explores our relationship with our planet and our place in the universe using space imaging technology. This innovative approach allows us to see space and the cosmos in new ways, and to discover answers to questions that push the boundaries of human understanding.

The Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy excels at research about the changing human population and its potential impacts on social and economic issues, communicating its findings widely. The Institute collaborates with Canadian and international researchers to address some of society’s most difficult challenges.

The Southern Alberta Genome Sciences Centre (SAGSC) combines multiple omics technologies, including next generation sequencing platforms, NMR facilities and a bioinformatics core facility. SAGSC facilitates the generation and analysis of omics data for ULethbridge researchers, external academic and industry partners, and provides bioinformatics training opportunities for ULethbridge students.

How is HSM changing your career trajectory?

“Healthcare is one the fastest growing and ever evolving industries in Canada and is in constant need of highly qualified managers to lead in healthcare facilities. While I could go ahead with the licensing pathway to resume my clinical practice here in Canada, HSM has proven to be an exciting new option for me in order to advance my career in a slightly different discipline.

I am learning to plan, direct and coordinate medical and health services and polishing my leadership skills, I strive to work and engage with leaders in the field to motivate and inspire the coming generations of leaders and innovators. “In 2017, I began my Master of Fine Arts in Art. I had applied to three different places and ULethbridge was one of them. Honestly, this was the place that I was most excited about once I actually visited this area. I was so excited to come study here.

Finishing my MFA and doing my PhD, that was a big accomplishment, but I wouldn’t say it was the biggest accomplishment.
