REBECCA TOON BFA Dramatic Arts Tech/Design ‘06 “I fell in love with costuming at the U of L! The diverse selection of shows I worked on meant that I graduated with a significant portfolio with which to enter the industry. I had incredible opportunities and got to work alongside some of the most dedicated, welcoming professors, who helped prepare me for success in my career.” Theatrical Costume Designer

BRENDAN MATKIN BFA New Media ‘13 “The best part about the New Media program is the small size and intimate structure. The Faculty of Fine Arts is stacked with some incredibly talented designers, artists, and teachers and I felt comfortable approaching them directly and collaborating with them, even across departments and programs. Be sure to take full advantage of these amazing people; many students miss out on this experience by keeping to themselves.” MA Candidate, SIAT at Simon Fraser; Co-Founder, Maker Cube (Surrey’s Makerspace)

KASIA SOSNOWSKI BFA Art - AH/MS ‘14 “The U of L Art History and Museum Studies program is wonderful – it introduced me to critical ways of thinking about museums and museological practices. The professors are challenging, engaging, and incredibly supportive. The years I spent at the U of L have influenced my life in the most positive ways and have led me to where I am now.” Preparatorial Practicum Walter Phillips Gallery The Banff Centre

“Classes that really had the most tangible impact on the work that I have done with The Cedar Tavern Singers were the Art History courses taught by Dr. Leslie Dawn. The enthusiasm with which Dr. Dawn taught his classes really instilled in me a love of art history and an interest in those kinds of ‘behind the scenes’ stories that give a larger context to a work of art and how it fits in to the life of an artist.”

JESSE NORTHEY BMus - DAA ‘13 “U of L was close to home, affordable, and is one of the only four-year degree programs that focused on audio production in Western Canada. The facilities and the strong ties to the music department made it an opportune fit for me. The combination of music theory and technical skills equipped me for all sorts of freelance jobs, such as working as a producer, as well as recording and performing on people’s albums across Alberta.” Owner, Jesse Northey Productions

DAFNE CARRASCO BFA New Media ‘10, BEd ‘12 “My time in New Media was a life-changing opportunity where I discovered my passion for creative learning. The range of courses offered by skilled and enthusiastic instructors inspired me to pursue teaching and ultimately prepared me for transitioning into the Education Program. I truly developed the skills and mindset necessary to be an effective teacher, and I continue to reflect on the experiences to become a better teacher and learner for my students right now and into the future.”

“I wanted a new media degree program that involved learning about many forms of new media and digital art, rather than a program that only focuses on one aspect, such as graphic design. During my studies, I have learned so many skills that can be applied in a number of careers such as filmmaking, animation and web design. INQUISITIVE BY NATURE WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BFA, BMUS AND BA DEGREE? Although Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Arts degree programs share a similar core of required courses, the BFA or BMus provides a more in-depth study in your major. The BA option is a more general program with fewer required courses in your area of focus or major.

HOW DO I FIGURE OUT WHAT CLASSES I NEED TO TAKE?

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE MY DEGREE? The BFA or BMus degree takes four years of full-time studies (five courses a semester for two semesters each year). It takes five years to complete the combined BFA/BEd, BFA/BMgt or BMus/ BEd degrees.

WHAT PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE FOR FINE ARTS STUDENTS?

The program planning guides outline the required courses for your specific degree and major, and provide a sample sequence of courses to help you plan.

The Co-operative Education & Internship program is available to Fine Arts students. Integrating academic study with paid work experience, Co-op connects the student, University, and employer to provide an exceptional professional development experience.
