“My brother has cerebral palsy, so I’ve always been interested in people with physical disabilities. We are really close, and he’s pretty much my motivation for everything.” Chase Petruska, MSc student Major: Neuroscience Pursuing research he’s keenly interested in was Chase Petruska’s reason for choosing ULethbridge. His work in Dr. Gerlinde Metz’s lab at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience (CCBN) led to a powerchair soccer program for people with physical disabilities. “When I came to Lethbridge and saw no specific activity for individuals in powerchairs, I thought it would be a good idea to look at this powerchair soccer intervention and then we could also measure the impact it made on their resilience and mental health.” “We found individuals with physical disabilities were more susceptible to stressful situations and social isolation. We also found that individuals who had nonfamily caretakers reported more depressive and anxiety symptoms, as well as a decrease in physical activity.” “We are very grateful the University makes research possible and, at the same time, enables the powerchair soccer program. Quantum Horizons Alberta: A magnet for high-calibre researchers The new $25-million Quantum Horizons Alberta (QHA) project, a partnership between the University of Lethbridge, UAlberta and UCalgary, is poised to boost our renown in quantum science research. Physics and astronomy professor and theoretical physicist, Dr. Saurya Das, leads QHA work at ULethbridge. “Often, revolutionary ideas have come from the younger minds,” says Das, adding mentorship from
experienced researchers is crucial. Mentors help put matters in context and recognize which ideas have the greatest potential. The amount and quality of research conducted at ULethbridge has grown substantially since Das joined ULethbridge. In the last two decades, his and his colleagues’ theoretical quantum science research has gained international attention.

Nato’yi’kina’soyi, Hali Heavy Shield (BA/BEd ’06, MEd ’12) earned the 2023 Spirit Prize, an award supporting emerging Indigenous visual artists as they develop their practices and advance their careers. ULethbridge Chancellor Terry Whitehead (BA ’94) generously provides the Spirit Prize. What would you like to share about yourself? “My Blackfoot name is Nato’yi’kina’soyi: Holy Light that Shines Bright. I am a member of the Blood Tribe of southern Alberta. I am a PhD student studying Blackfoot narratives and art. I have one daughter, also a ULethbridge graduate, and an old lady cat.” What inspired you to apply for the Spirit Prize? “It gave me the opportunity to try something new, to explore ideas that I may not otherwise follow through with. I encourage others to apply for awards because they are excellent ways to get support doing something you love.”

With an increased demand for addiction services in the last decade, Dr. Bonnie Lee, health sciences professor, has developed an innovative therapy model focusing on couple relationships. “There is a long tradition of dealing with addiction as an individual problem that impacts family members. Treatment typically focuses on that individual as the principal and identified patient. The Congruence Couple Therapy (CCT) model flipped from putting the onus on the lone individual to focusing on the larger relational context contribuing to addiction. For example, we don’t view gambling and alcohol use as the primary problem in CCT, but as a symptom of an underlying system dysfunction.
