How Sustainable is a Quooker? With a Quooker in your kitchen you always have instant 100ºC boiling water on demand. Add a CUBE and enjoy filtered chilled and sparkling too. DID YOU KNOW it takes 3 litres of water to make just one litre plastic bottle? Buy 3 bottles a week like the average person and that’s 9 litres of water down the drain for every 3 litres you drink. What a waste of a precious natural resource. Plus, over 40% of those empty bottles will end up in landfill polluting our natural environment. With a Quooker and CUBE you can say goodbye to plastic water bottles forever so no more wasted water, no more plastic waste.

AN EXCITING NEW PHASE AHEAD Q. Tell us about the expansion of your services A. The last few years have seen the demand for specialist medical and cosmetic skincare surge. People are more informed about the use of laser technology and the range of issues it can be used for; we aim to provoke bespoke care for the individual, and each machine is capable of a variety of treatments. Our medical and nursing team has recently expanded so that we can offer extra clinics and we have just purchased the Stellar M22 IPL machine, which is principally used to treat redness, particularly for those with acne and rosacea.
Q. What else can this new machine be used for? Dr Jack De Wolf, Dr Felicity Burnham and Dr Julian Handley.
Bloomfield Laser Clinic has been at the forefront of Dermatology in Northern Ireland for the past 26 years Nestled in the heart of the picturesque seaside town of Groomsport, Co.Down, its Grade II listed building exterior belies what lies inside: a sleek, spacious, surgical and laser treatment centre designed to manage every medical and cosmetic need. As the creation of Dr Julian Handley, who has individually spearheaded laser treatment in Northern Ireland for many years, Bloomfield’s extensive technology ranges from the NdYAG laser (for treating malformed blood vessels and thread veins) to the carbon dioxide laser (for acne scarring and facial rejuvenation). As it enters its 27th year, Bloomfield is expanding to meet an ever-increasing demand for its services. We spoke to the clinic’s three doctors about this new phase.
It can also be used for several vascular conditions and can be used to take the redness out of scars, something we will look to combined with our surgical services. After medical or cosmetic surgery we can utilise this new laser as well as others in our arsenal to give patients the best cosmetic scar outcome.
Q. Are you offering any other services? A. Over the last year we have increased the number of staff, allowing us to try and accommodate both our medical and cosmetic patient demands, but we do know there are other services that our patients would like. We are talking with other doctors who can provide complementary services to those the clinic already offers and will suit our patient demographic. In particular, we are looking at bringing in health & wellness checks as well as womens health & menopause services. To access the expanding range of services available at Bloomfield laser please call us or connect on Facebook

EDITOR’S LETTER
High and Dry
EDITOR: Christopher Sherry DEPUTY EDITOR: Joanne Harkness EDITORIAL MANAGER: James Sherry SALES & MARKETING MANAGERS: Lorraine Gill Gerry Waddell
Like many, this year I decided to have a ‘dry January’. Overall, my experience was a positive one; having said that I’m not sure if I will do it every year. Not in January anyway. The early part of the month was fine, and it was good to have a few quiet weeks at home after a busy Christmas period. However, as the month dragged on, and the weather deteriorated, I began to wonder why I had embarked on a period of abstinence from alcohol at such a bleak time of year. One thing I can say about taking a month-long break from any, potentially bad, habit is that it certainly disrupts the cycle of doing something purely out of routine. Increasingly, even a fairly small quantity of alcohol can knock me out of kilter for a day or so. A reset now and again is therefore no bad thing. Maybe next year, or even later this year, I will do it again but I think I will plan it for less dreary time of year. Cheers.

COLUMN February 2024
LIFE & TIMES EDITED BY KATHY CLUGSTON
Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.
Seeing Things Differently This month, Kathy discusses the process of habituation and how we can add a bit of zing to our lives. Have you ever had the sudden urge to rearrange the living room furniture or move all your pictures and pot plants to different locations? It happens to me once in a while when a room I used to think looked fabulous feels boring and unremarkable. It’s almost as though I can’t see it any more. And, in fact, that is exactly what is happening through a process called habituation. We literally stop seeing things once our brain gets used to them. A good demonstration of this is ‘Troxler’s fading’, an optical phenomenon named after the Swiss physicist who discovered it in the early 1800s. If you search online you’ll find a number of tests to try. They generally consist of a black dot in the centre of a series of coloured circles. If you stare intently at the dot the bright colours disappear, melting away like magic. If your focus is really good they vanish completely, leaving just a plain grey background. As soon as you move your eyes, even a fraction, the colours spring back into view. The theory is that once the sensors in our eyes stop receiving new information they send fewer or no signals to the brain, leaving it ready to deal with more urgent matters pertaining to our survival. Moving furniture around is the physical equivalent of blinking and refocusing: we start to see everything afresh. Cast your mind back to when you last moved into a new house or flat. Do you remember thinking that living with bare lightbulbs, orange wallpaper and piles of boxes everywhere would be unbearable, only to realise after a few days that you’ve been walking around the boxes without even noticing them? Habituation is why, when we first hang a picture on the wall, it
thrills us for a couple of days but we soon forget it’s there; why, unless we actively think about it, we don’t feel the watch on our wrist or the earrings in our ears and can ‘tune out’ background noise, smells and light. A car alarm that suddenly starts blaring, stopping and starting, will drive you nuts but if you live by a railway station or under a flight path, you get so accustomed to the continual noise that it no longer even registers. Habituation can be extremely useful, of course. It can help us overcome phobias and fears, concentrate amid distractions and generally ‘get used to’ things, like a new job or environment. But there are also downsides. Habituation can lead to inaction. We may never get around to painting over that orange wallpaper or sorting out that pile of paperwork because we simply stop seeing it. We might find ourselves constantly craving new things to stimulate us. Our long-term partners might seem less…dazzling than they once were. But when you understand that it’s habituation at work a small change can make a big difference. I’m not suggesting you trade in your perfectly nice spouse but changing your usual habits - even something as simple as doing the grocery shopping at a different time in a different supermarket - and trying some new activities together can have positive benefits and stop you

becoming stifled by your routines. Spending more time apart gives couples new things to talk about and a chance to actually miss each other’s company. In the same way, wearing your existing clothes in a different way (look up the ‘wrong shoe theory’) or adding a lick of bright paint to a wall can make everything feel brand new. You don’t need to move house, quit your job or run off with the postman/woman to bring a bit of zing into your life. Just give your eyes a wiggle and watch the magical colours appear.

East Belfast’s Alan Dawson’s 27-Year Run with Monarchs Comes To A Close
A
fter 27 years, Old Dominion University (ODU) men’s soccer coach, Alan Dawson, has retired from the sidelines. It’s a decision he’d been mulling over for a few years.
“I’m looking forward to the next chapter in my life,” Dawson said as the season wound down. “I think during the last few years – ever since COVID really – it’s been tough to be consistent with the program.” “Obviously not having great success over the last few years didn’t help. So
I just felt it was the right time to move on and give somebody else the reins.” He leaves Old Dominion with 257 wins – the most in school history. And he was a four-time Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year.
been playing or coaching.” He played in the youth ranks for Linfield FC – which gave him the opportunity to travel to the US, and he knew at a young age that he would use soccer as his ticket to living abroad.
But Dawson’s current and former players said it’s not just the record books that he rewrote; he’s rewritten the script for countless lives he’s had an effect on throughout the years.
Dawson said goodbye at Old Dominion’s final home game, where more than 50 former players and hundreds of family members, friends and school officials gathered at ODU Soccer Complex to bid Dawson farewell.
“Coach Dawson was able to create an atmosphere and system where I had full and complete support and trust from the beginning,” said Attila Vendegh, a two-time CAA Player of the Year and CAA Freshman of the Year. Hard work and grit are what Dawson attributes to the lofty win totals and accomplishments: attributes he’s carried since his days of playing in the streets as a teenager in Belfast. “It’s all I’ve ever done,” Dawson said. “I’ve never had another job. I’ve either
NORTH DOWN MUSEUM RETAINS ACCREDITION STATUS
N
ORTH DOWN MUSEUM is delighted to have retained its full accreditation status after recently under-going a rigorous assessment process. The Accreditation Scheme is administered by the Arts Council of England in partnership with the Northern Ireland Museums Council which sets nationally agreed standards for museums in the UK. It defines good practice and encourages museums to constantly improve and develop the service they provide, to reach the highest professional standards, with regards to both the collection and visitors. Accreditation is a gold standard which allows North Down Museum to attract high value loans and to access funding to create better programming. It requires the museum to constantly examine and improve its security, the collection care standards, exhibition quality, visitor experience, the quality of its education programme and how the museum works with the community to educate, interpret and collect. North Down Museum was last assessed for accreditation in 2017 and since then has made improvements to its gallery spaces, created a new education programme, launched a number of initiatives to increase accessibility to the museum and developed a programme of outreach to create stronger connections with communities throughout the Borough. Speaking about the accreditation, The Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Jennifer Gilmour said: “I’m absolutely delighted that
North Down Museum has retained its official accreditation status. The museum’s commitment to governance, collections care and visitor experience has ensured maintenance of this standard. This is a credit to all of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes at the museum. Well done to all the staff.” Pictured with the Museum Accreditation Certificate are; The Arlene Matthews, Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Jennifer Gilmour North Down and North Down Museum Manager, Arlene Matthews. Museum Manager said; “Trust is essential to our work in the museum. It is crucial that members of the public and other organisations feel confident in the museum to care for their objects either through donations and loans, and to provide the highest quality interpretation of the history they represent. Maintaining accredited status shows the museum’s commitment to continue that relationship with the community.” 32

My people who are making a difference in even the smallest ways. I am inspired by my children, and I love how they view life free from worries, living simply, laughing, playing, quick to forgive, quick to hug. And singing helps.
Claire Murray
Head of Development and Marketing at the Lyric Theatre. 1. What do you love most about your job? Two years ago Sheila O’Donnell and John Tuomey won the RIAI Triennial Gold Medal for the Lyric Theatre building, which is the highest honour in Irish Architecture. I have the unique privilege to work every day in the most beautiful building in Ireland. Before I joined the Lyric, I had a short freelance stint at the National Trust NI, where my place of work was Rowallane Gardens, and then The MAC Belfast, so I feel very spoiled to have had these really amazing spaces to work in. Of course, beyond that, there’s the sheer delight of being right in the middle of the ‘sawdust’ of showbusiness. Last year we toured our production of Good Vibrations to the Irish Arts Center NYC, and will be back again with our award-winning production, Agreement. It is wonderful to be part of all our production journeys, from the beginnings of a play or musical as words on a page, to the bright lights of the stage. 2. What has been your career highlight to date? I read English Literature at Trinity College Dublin and imagined I would have a career in media or comms, but after completing my Masters, I got a job working for one of the world’s biggest multinational corporations – Coca-Cola. I spent almost 15 very happy years working in the corporate world before making the leap to working full-time in the arts. The arts has been such a fundamental part of my life for so long, it’s a privilege to be working in theatre full-time. Highlights are too many to mention, but I have loved meeting and working with some of the people I have idolised for years, high-profile actors, designers and directors. Last year was particuarly special as I organised two fundraiser events for the Lyric featuring my very talented brother and sister, who are full-time actors and theatre makers. We not only got the chance to work together, but they helped raise money for the theatre’s work with young people, which is a vital part of what we do. As the creative engine of the cultural life of Northern Ireland for the last 75 years, the Lyric has been the platform for so many ‘big breaks’ – from Liam Neeson to Anthony Boyle – and continues to be the training ground for the next generation of actors and theatre makers.
3. What are your favourite hobbies/ activities outside of work? I recently joined a book club, and am absolutely loving re-discovering the joy of reading after a long hiatus. I also recently started singing in a choir again, as a Cantor at St Columba’s Parish Church Knock, led by the maestro, Dr Joe McKee. Most of the music is completely new to me, as I never formally trained in music, and my school choir did not have the tradition of performing great choral works or English church music. It’s like a week-long homework to familiarise myself with the music, and then sight-sing the alto harmony line. But the homework is worth it. It is pure joy, I love every minute. I also am learning British Sign Language (BSL) with Anthony at SignSource, having been inspired by the brilliant accessibility work that is going on at the Lyric. It has been really wonderful. I hope it helps to improve the work we do at the theatre, but also personally gives me the confidence to communicate better with some of the people I know in my life who are part of the deaf community. 4. What is your daily routine? I probably shouldn’t admit it, but my 12-year-old wakes me up as she leaves the house to catch her bus. Her and her dad are early risers thankfully, but I am not! I help get our two younger daughters (10 and 7) ready for the day, and we head out to their school, which is a short walk away from the Lyric Theatre. I work full-time, so life after work is very busy – full of school events, afterschool hobbies, family life. Weekends are welcomed gratefully. 5. Do you have a specific fitness regime? Nothing regular, I’m afraid. I always intend to do 2-3 Joe Wicks workouts per week, but sometimes I can go for weeks without doing any! I do walk to work a few days a week, and do lots of walking/scooting/playing chase at the weekend, so I am generally always active. 6. Do you have any tips for staying positive? I am a glass-half-full kind of person, and always have been. I feel very blessed every day with what I have. The world is a dark place at times, certainly now, and it would be easy to fall into despair about the state of things. But I am constantly inspired by 48
7. What do you think is the best thing about living in Northern Ireland? Northern Ireland constantly surprises me with its beauty. It’s like a never-ending discovery of awe-inspiring coastline, countryside, meadows and historic buildings. Just yesterday I had a meeting at Clifton House, a stunning Georgian building and Belfast’s original Poor House. It was a place I had never heard of before. I love making those discoveries. 8. What is your mantra or favourite quote that you live by? You’re never fully dressed without a smile. 9. Who has been your biggest influence? From a business perspective, I feel very lucky to have worked with, and been mentored by, some amazing people in business – Brona Moffett (National Museums NI), Ian Murdock and Stephen Greiff (Coca-Cola), and I learned everything I know about the arts in Northern Ireland from Niamh Flanagan, head of Theatre and Dance NI. But my biggest influence is my dad, Frank. He has been a self-employed quantity surveyor his whole life, and still works part-time in his office at home at 77. His quiet dedication to work, coupled with a sense that he was never too busy to talk, or stop for a cup of tea, or go to his Irish classes, or amateur drama reheasals, has instilled in me a similar perspective on work-life balance. Work well, work hard, but never let it take over life.

INTERVIEW
60
Jane Hardy is a feature writer who has interviewed a few of the big names from Arlene Foster to Mrs Thatcher.
BY JANE HARDY
Stateside in Stranmillis New US Consul General to Northern Ireland, James Applegate, talks to Jane Hardy about looking forward to an exciting year of elections, the appeal of working in Belfast and surviving a coup in Rangoon. It’s a big year for America and for the American Consulate in Belfast, with the presidential election in November. Not to mention a looming British general election and probably an Irish election to boot. “I wish they weren’t all coming together,” says the new Consul General, James Applegate (41), with a smile. But these are interesting times. He reveals that he remembers watching the selection of a new president as a boy in Michigan. “It was the ’92 election with George H W Bush versus Clinton and it was relatively exciting, with great debates. My parents weren’t especially politically active but I got hooked at an early age, and we’d watch it on television.” The man who says he has never wanted to be a politician and who as a career diplomat remains “apolitical” nonetheless admits to having viewed the whole series of the satirical TV show Veep which pokes serious fun at US politics. “I won’t share stories but there have been times when it’s been a little too close to home.” Applegate says that the Obama election struck a note in China, where he was posted at the time. “It was the first presidential election I’d seen while serving the government. There was tremendous interest. It was not always easy to get Chinese attendance at a public affairs event, but the election was different. We had screenings of debates and sometimes got over a hundred people there, with discussion afterwards.” By the time Obama became the 44th president, Applegate was in Australia where the excitement was intense. “Everybody was enthusiastic, eager to meet him.” He has encountered, although not had a one-onone conversation, with a recent president of the United States. “I haven’t met President Biden but
61
have been in the same room as former President Trump a couple of times. Trump was as you’d expect, very engaged, asks lots of questions and wants details from his team.” While not, strictly speaking, on US territory in the room we talk in at Danesfort, the Victorian Consulate building in Stranmillis, which is grand and has a massive mirror bearing the initials of its original owner, linen merchant Samuel Barber, we are on their property. Security is tight on the way in, past people looking for visas, and you sense a watchful eye. James Applegate spotted the Belfast job and liked what he saw but got it a little sooner than he’d thought as his predecessor, Paul Narain, was suddenly called back to work for the Secretary of State in Washington. “I found out in early July and we arrived in August. It was a rapid turn (around) and sometimes we’ll scratch our head and say ‘Why didn’t we bring that mattress?’ It’s a popular job – Belfast is a really nice place to live and a lot of people like to serve at a consulate which here is the big end of small. It’s different from an embassy in that a lot of the grind doesn’t touch consulates and you don’t have the regular diplomatic messaging to governments. Although there is engagement with local issues, including the question of a united Ireland, Applegate comments: “We don’t take a role but follow closely significant changes in status that can affect the region, starting with business. It’s an interesting time.” He adds it’s fortunate Mr Biden, with his Irish roots, is engaged with the area. “It’s lucky he’s interested, but I have been at the other end, and it can be good to have nobody tell you what to do at all!”
INTERVIEW
We weren’t at risk and the protesters were asking for help but I remember hand grenades being used outside at one point.
The Consul General is in touch with the business community and says that he feels Northern Ireland’s dual market identity, with access to the EU and Great Britain, might be advantageous “ I think it does present an interesting opportunity and with a HQ in Derry, you could have two offices in Derry, one European and one British.” While not naming names, Applegate adds that business leaders he visited in Derry (Londonderry) were discussing this. But as an economic officer by training, Applegate says that there’s something even more important to commerce. “That’s predictability. You can follow the rules, but need to know what they are, with clarity around the Windsor framework and the way that’s playing out.” He’s been out of town, which he sees as important. In terms of reading a new place, the Consul-General finds it helps to get out of the city. “I’ve gone to Fermanagh, Omagh and Mid Ulster. It’s a beautiful place. You have to avoid the trap of just staying in the big city or capital where you’re based. “Then it’s a question of listening. Mr Applegate has also checked out Belfast community projects such as Jackie Redpath’s Greater Shankill Partnership. Half of a tandem couple, as his wife Sarah Boyke works remotely in State Department HR, the Applegates have two children, Smith (6) and Irish (4). Their son is named after one of James’ ancestors. “My wife and I found it difficult to agree on boys’ names and I had a great-great-great grandfather who fought in the Civil War. You have to be careful, as there’s a connotation. He was fighting for the North.” Diplomacy can be a risky job, depending on circumstances. James Applegate was in Burma during the 2021 coup in Rangoon and describes it, with diplomat’s understatement, as a strange experience. But adds he wouldn’t want to experience anything similar again. “I was woken at three in the morning. It was a shock
62
week and the crowds grew. We weren’t at risk and the protesters were asking for help but I remember hand grenades being used outside at one point.” This was while he and his wife were in the garden with two small children. It seemed a good moment for families to leave. We touch on America’s global status and the situation in the Middle East. Applegate says: “I believe America on balance is a force for good in the world, for various reasons, and is in a unique place with the Middle East, Ukraine.” He goes on to mention a speech by Tony Blair, which addressed this. “He said in a speech to Congress ’Why does it need to be America?’ and his answer was ‘Because history put you there.’” The Consul-General adds he feels the world and America are better when his country is engaged, which is not to say they don’t make mistakes. He has no typical day. “The children run me ragged at the end of the day. We like playing board games and recently Smith has started on chess.” In terms of relaxation, Applegate hasn’t a lot of spare time but mentions trips to the restaurant Home. And Peter McKittrick introduced him to John Long’s for some fish and chips. The job provides a kind of window on history. Applegate was in Kabul before the revolution. It was a challenging posting, as he says: “But I’m glad I did it. Double Denim Is Back (Again!)
I’ve never lost my love for double denim (a.k.a. the Canadian tuxedo). When most fashion editors would have considered wearing this combo a fashion faux pas, I’ve remained loyal. But then I’ve never followed trends. I am at the lovely life stage where I choose to wear what I want, and I wear the clothes that makes me happy. The trick to nailing double denim is to pin a picture of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears at the 2001 American Music Awards and never EVER repeat! Denim look by Matalan. Think less about identical shades and more about complementary cuts. If you’re waiting for the comeback of the skinny jean, though, don’t hold your breath. Low rise loose, wide and straight leg and cargo denim are all BIG this year. So too are barrel-leg and utilitarian cargo jeans. Darker indigo wash Denim looks to be one of the big spring/summer trends. Lengths are super-long look by – these jeans are made for trailing behind you, with a little bit of your shoe Next. peeking out. Style note: Careful of this one, folks, don’t trip over yourself! Not sure how to style cargoes? Don a pair of heels and a slinky top with denim cargoes, and you’ve got the perfect on-trend evening look. The good news for the environment is that denim brands have started to prioritize eco-friendly practices, aiming for a greener future. Brands like Levi’s and Everlane, for instance, are adopting organic cotton and pioneering watersaving production methods. In a world dominated by mass-produced goods, there’s a growing appreciation for the artisanal. Denim brands are embracing this trend by focusing on hand-stitched patterns, lending a personal touch to each piece. Brands like Kapital from Japan emphasise hand-dyed denim using natural dyes, ensuring each pair of jeans tells a distinct story. Head over to www.couvertureandthegarbstore.com
A Fresher Look Without Surgery A Thread-lift is a cosmetic procedure that offers a minimally invasive alternative to Facelift Surgery. Thread-lifts tighten your skin by inserting medical-grade thread material into your face and then “pulling” your skin up by tightening the thread. Also called a barbed suture lift, it aims to lift and sculpt the shape of your face. Thread-lifts use temporary, medical-grade sutures to tighten the skin and stimulate collagen production. Thread-lifts have been around since the 1990s, but innovations in the material used for Thread-lifts have led to an increase in popularity in recent years. The typical candidate for a Thread-lift is in their late 30s to early 50s. A person who is generally in good health and is just starting to notice the signs of ageing may benefit the most from the subtle impact of a Thread-lift. Those who can’t have a Surgical Facelift because of medical conditions that make general anaesthesia risky may consider a Thread-lift as a safer alternative. …And Relax Ulster Tatler’s Joanne Harkness visits Crowne Plaza’s newest addition, BodySpa, for an indulgent treatment. The month of January can feel like an eternity with the cold, dark weather and postChristmas comedown. To break the monotony, it is good to plan some treats and self-care here and there, and what better treat than a relaxing facial? Belfast’s Crowne Plaza Hotel has recently launched BodySpa, which is the perfect place to unwind, rejuvenate and get the ultimate spa experience. They offer a wide range of spa treatments including facials, massages and anti-ageing treatments, as well as beauty treatments. So whether it is a calming back massage, an acnebusting facial or an eyebrow wax that you are looking for – everything is covered. After an indulgent festive period, my skin was looking a bit lacklustre and I wanted to breathe some life back into it, so a facial was my treatment of choice. There is a selection of facials to choose from, targeting different areas: everything
from anti-ageing to vitamin C boosts. The facial that stood out to me was the ‘Champagne & Truffles Deluxe Treatment’ which was described as the crème de la crème of radiance facials. It is a luxury facial that combines their award-winning truffle skincare with a specialist lifting massage technique that promises to iron out deep lines and wrinkles, helping to strengthen muscle tone and reduce puffiness…sign me up! The Crowne Plaza Hotel feels luxurious, yet is buzzing with life, and you are always met with a friendly face. I had arrived after work on a cold, icy evening and immediately felt encapsulated in the warmth of the spa. My therapist, Sarah, made me feel at ease straight away and
talked through the steps of the treatment. It began with a foot ritual, which was followed by the soothing facial, all of which used soporific massaging techniques. We can get swept up in the stresses of daily life, trying to balance work, home life, hobbies and exercise, so there is something so special about being able to completely switch off for an hour, unwind and not have to think about anything – it feels very freeing. At BodySpa they use the award-winning TEMPLESPA products, which have been described as the cashmere and silk of natural skincare brands. The creams, serums and masks used felt rich and decadent – a real treat for my skin. What struck me most was the alluring aromas from the products; the beautiful scents filled the room and enhanced the spa experience further. The skin truffle used contains black summer truffles, as well as pure gold and diamond illuminating powder – the ingredients couldn’t get any more luxurious. The properties of the skin truffle range aim to firm and hydrate the skin, 68
reducing the appearance of fine lines for instant radiance. One of my favourite aspects of the facial was the incorporation of massage and I particularly enjoyed the arm and hand massage. I was so relaxed at one stage that I almost fell asleep and if left, I could have stayed there quite contentedly all night. I didn’t want the treatment to end, but eventually had to snap back into reality. Upon finishing, with a quick glance in the mirror I could see that my skin was glowing. It had that luminous, dewy look that instantly makes you look healthier and more vibrant. My skin was the best it had been in a long time and I got lots of compliments from friends and family. Even better, someone at an event assumed I was 21 years old – so it had taken a whole decade off me! Don’t let vertigo get your head in a spin this Valentine’s Day? This month, Rebecca Nelson, founder and Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist at Apex Clinic & Apex Headache Clinic, discusses how getting the correct diagnosis for your vertigo is vital for treating it correctly, and how the practice has been clearing this debilitating condition for years. not respond to drugs used to treat inner ear vertigo, so if your vertigo hasn’t cleared up with medication, it is definitely time to consider if it could be stemming from your neck.
Vertigo has devastating effects At Apex Headache Clinic, Belfast we have over 25 years of extensive experience in treating vertigo or dizziness. Approximately 20% of all patients we see suffer with this common health complaint which has devastating symptoms such as poor balance, especially when walking, light headedness or a sense of ‘being removed’ from the world. In the most severe cases sufferers are confined to their homes and it can ruin their lives. Getting the right diagnosis is vital Clearing your vertigo begins with getting the right diagnosis. What is commonly unknown
is that there are in fact two main causes of vertigo: vertigo stemming from an imbalance in the inner ear, called vestibular vertigo, and vertigo originating from the upper neck region of the spine, called cervical vertigo. Cervical vertigo is often overlooked as a cause of vertigo even though its occurrence is extremely common. It is usually the result of stiffness or damage of the upper neck joints of the spine but usually the individual experiences no actual neck pain, only dizziness. Cervical vertigo is often misdiagnosed and treated as vestibular vertigo. One of the features of cervical vertigo is that is does

Clear your vertigo for good At Apex Headache Clinic, we have been successfully diagnosing and treating cervical vertigo for over 25 years. Furthermore, I have extensively trained our whole team of physiotherapists in my manual regimes of treatment that I use to clear it, called The Nelson Vertigo Approach™. This treatment is very successful in targeting cervical vertigo at its source and clearing it or significantly improving it in the vast majority of cases. Your initial consultation at Apex Headache Clinic will involve one of our experienced specialist physiotherapists assessing your neck to determine if it is the source of your vertigo. If the assessment confirms that your vertigo stems from your neck, a treatment plan will then follow. Our unique regime of manual physiotherapy treatment involves gentle and safe mobilization techniques of the specific targeted segments of the upper neck region. Patients often start to feel relief within just a few sessions. Don’t let vertigo ruin the quality of your life. At Apex Headache Clinic, we have a high success rate in clearing this complaint, even in patients who have suffered for years. Apex Clinic cleared my agonising pain after shingles For 58-year-old Catherine Craig from south Belfast, life was a struggle. Severe nerve pain after having shingles (post herpetic neuralgia) had a devastating impact on her life. Desperate for pain relief, she visited Apex Clinic, Belfast. Here, Catherine describes how the clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment, called The Nelson Spinal ApproachTM, cleared her nerve pain, meaning that she could finally get her life back on track. Catherine, when did your shingles nerve pain begin? In September I woke up one morning with severe back pain. After three days I then developed a rash which started on the inside of my elbow. Within 24 hours the rash spread down my left arm and onto my hand. I made an appointment to see my GP, who told me that I had shingles and prescribed an antiviral drug called Acyclovir. The pain in my back and arm was unbearable. This agonising pain continued and after a few weeks I saw my GP again and they prescribed a second course of Acyclovir. The shingles rash then finally cleared but the pain did not change. I went back to my GP and they told me that the pain I had was called ‘post herpetic neuralgia’ and that although the shingles rash had gone the pain I had was nerve pain caused by the shingles virus. At this appointment I was told that I may have to live with this constant excruciating pain. How did the nerve pain affect your life? My life was a complete misery. The pain was off the Richter scale and I couldn’t do or enjoy anything. The pain was just continual. I couldn’t sleep for longer than 90 minutes without having to get up and walk around. I couldn’t go to work or even concentrate to watch TV. I was in a terrible way. I had hypersensitive skin and couldn’t stand anything touching my arm, I wore loose cotton clothing and had to keep my arm out of the bed because the weight of the duvet was unbearable. I had tingling in my hand and involuntary twitching in my face.
could help me. Rebecca told me that they offer a treatment regime for post herpetic neuralgia and their success rate was very high. So, I booked an appointment with Rebecca. How has your life changed since having treatment? Specialist manual physiotherapy treatment has given me my life back. My sleep returned to normal and I was able to return to work. My pain was so severe that it took a few treatments before I noticed any difference but my progress was slow and steady. I continued to have treatment for three months and after this time I was pain free, however, I still had mild skin sensitivity and Rebecca advised me to use a progressive self-massage programme on my arm. This cleared the sensitivity and tingling also. It was such a relief that I wasn’t going to be left with this pain permanently which was my biggest fear. My pain cleared completely and my life returned to normal!
What led you to Apex Clinic? I had attended Rebecca Nelson at Apex Clinic previously with back and leg pain which had cleared with her specialist physiotherapy treatment. When I was suffering so badly with this new nerve pain I thought I would get in touch to see if they
apex
What advice would you offer someone suffering from post herpetic neuralgia? I would advise anyone suffering with post herpetic neuralgia or nerve pain after having shingles to go to Apex Clinic. With this treatment this type of pain and sensitivity can be cleared; you don’t have to suffer it. To book an appointment at Apex Clinic, call: 028 9048 4153. No GP referral is necessary.

Travelling abroad for dental treatment:
ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW
An increasing number of people from this part of the world are travelling abroad to undertake lower-cost dental treatments which they could not otherwise afford at home. We have all, however, heard the warnings around the risks involved in availing of such services far from home. If you are thinking about going abroad for dental work, it is essential that you consider a range of factors other than just cost e.g. a clinic’s reputation with other overseas patients, the qualifications of the practitioners, your rights and protections in the country of treatment should something go wrong. Before committing to treatment, you must receive a fully costed treatment plan including information on any risks associated with the treatment and details of follow-up care. Kreativ Dental Clinic in Budapest, Hungary has been treating patients from Ireland and around the world for over 20 years. Mary Flanagan, the clinic’s representative in Ireland, outlined that the clinic has an expert team of dental specialists offering high-quality care using state-of-the-art technology. They have a proven track record when it comes to patient safety and quality of treatment and, importantly, there is an after-care service in Ireland. Planning for overseas treatment can take some time and effort but it is crucial that you get the right advice and support beforehand. Ideally, speak to someone who has travelled to the clinic before; Mary Flanagan of Kreativ Dental Clinic is a former patient herself and will happily share her experiences and answer any questions. The clinic offers a free consultation, including an OPG X-ray and a full breakdown of the treatment plan. It is then your decision if you wish to proceed with treatment or not.
For more information, contact Mary Flanagan who is the ROI and NI representative for Kreativ Dental Clinic. Call Mary on 00353 86 0299998 or 028 9530 0100 or email: mary@kreativdentalclinic.eu or visit kreativdentalclinic.eu

Kerry is founder and director of The Movement Medic
Sustaining Your New Year Momentum Welcome back to our health and wellness journey in 2024! In January, we delved into the exciting world of health and fitness trends. Now, as we step into February, it’s a crucial time to re-evaluate the promises we made to ourselves at the beginning of the year. Are you still on track with your health and wellness goals? If not, don’t worry. Let’s have a look at some common struggles and solutions. Losing Willpower with Diet and Exercise Navigating a busy life while staying committed to healthy eating can be a real challenge. As daily demands increase, the initial enthusiasm for maintaining a wholesome diet often takes a hit. Here’s a quick reality check: Could your diet be too strict? An overly large calorie deficit might be causing low energy, increased hunger and cravings. If you’re feeling fatigued or struggling with focus and willpower, consider upping your daily calories and ensuring you get enough protein. Instead of rigid rules, focus on the quality of your food choices. Opt for nutrient-dense foods, experiment with flavours, and enjoy the process of nourishing your body. Health is something to enjoy and shouldn’t be seen as a punishment. Battling Fatigue: Recharge Your Energy Reserves Fighting winter fatigue requires more than a quick caffeine fix. While coffee might seem like an easy solution, it’s essential to understand that its energy-boosting effect is more about blocking neurotransmitter adenosine than genuinely replenishing your energy reserves. Adenosine typically signals sleepiness, and when its receptors are blocked, it prevents that sleepy feeling. However, it’s crucial to recognise that this isn’t creating more energy; it’s merely masking fatigue. To boost your energy levels, consider cutting back on coffee, especially after midday. Instead, try natural light exposure, even during the colder months, to regulate
your circadian rhythm and help you feel more alert. Dehydration can make you feel fatigued and sluggish. Aim to increase your intake and keep sipping throughout the day to keep your energy levels stable. Bouncing Back from Failed Resolutions: A Fresh Start It happens to the best of us – New Year’s resolutions falter. Rather than letting this stop you altogether, let’s shift our perspective on setbacks. Instead of viewing them as failures, consider them stepping stones towards ultimate success. Reflect, Don’t Reject: Take a second and think about why things didn’t quite work out. Were your expectations a bit too high, or did unexpected challenges pop up? Use this moment to tweak your approach rather than scrapping the whole goal. Tweak, Don’t Toss: Instead of giving up on your resolution entirely, think about making some adjustments to better fit your current situation. A little adaptation can go a long way in overcoming obstacles, and sometimes, a small change in your plan can make a big difference. Cheers to Progress: Don’t forget to pat yourself on the back for even the tiniest victories. It’s these small wins that lay the groundwork for more significant successes down the road. So, remember, setbacks are just a part of the journey. Embrace them, learn from them. Navigating Winter/Post-Christmas Stress As winter settles in and the echoes of Christmas fade, the season can take a toll on our well-being. Post-Christmas blues,
stress, and long to-do lists often become overwhelming at this time of year. Here are a couple of things that can help. Learning to Say No: One powerful tool for maintaining your sanity is mastering the art of saying no when necessary. Prioritise engagements that truly matter, and release the unnecessary load. Saying no is a form of self-care, a gift you give yourself to keep stress at bay. Prioritising Self-Care: Self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. It’s about carving out time for yourself, recharging, and approaching the season with a heart full of resilience. During the short, dark days, making yourself a priority is crucial for maintaining a sense of balance and well-being. For help and support in navigating this year’s fitness trends, get in touch. I can provide personalised solutions for your health, performance and longevity. Jervis Wedding Photography: Capturing the Heart of Your Day Husband and wife duo, Paul and Judith, shoot weddings together. In addition to weddings Judith specialises in newborn photography and Paul shoots commercial and portrait photography. Paul loves being part of the Ulster Tatler cover shoots. He said, “It gives me the opportunity to take my skills and apply them in a different way from our main business of wedding photography. I can then take this cover shoot experience and weave it into our weddings.” Paul and Judith have been married for nearly 30 years and their wedding business is a two-person team. This gives a unique perspective to the wedding day as they can capture the same scenario from their own unique point of view. While Paul may be more involved in the direction and set-up, Judith finds a different outlook and takes photographs from a more observational point of view. Ultimately, their aim is to capture memories that help their couples remember how they felt on their wedding day. Paul concluded by saying, “The Verona shoot was particularly special for me as I was combining wedding and commercial photography into one shoot. Stephen McQuoid, Director at Radius Connect Solutions Ireland and renowned artist Terry Bradley launch Bradley Art Prize Competition.
New NI Opera Productions
This month, Northern Ireland’s national opera company will be launching two very different chamber opera productions in the intimate setting of the Grand Opera House’s Studio: ‘Cupid’s Bow’ and ‘The Juniper Tree’. From 14-17 February, audiences can experience a new production directed by NI Opera’s Artistic Director and CEO, Cameron Menzies. Audiences will enter a glamorous cocktail bar called ‘Cupid’s Bow’, run by the ever-positive Cupid, the god of love, desire and attraction. This bar is where some of opera’s most recognizable, famous and infamous characters come to unwind and share their stories and sing of falling in love, looking for love and falling out of love. This 90-minute fun-filled pastiche production will take you on a romantic and humorous adventure through comedy, tragedy, love, loss and survival as only opera can. From 21-24 February, NI Opera presents a new production of ‘The Juniper Tree’ by American composers Philip Glass and Robert Moran with libretto by Arthur Yorinks. Based on a Grimm’s fairytale, ‘The Juniper Tree’ is a gripping story of family, vengeance and, ultimately, redemption. This 90-minute chamber opera will appeal to fans of contemporary opera as well as new audiences. Find out more at www.niopera.com or www.goh.co.uk

REMEMBERING MÁIRTÍN Cathy Johnston and Christine Fadden.
For over 20 years, until his untimely death in January 2004, Mairtin Crawford was at the centre of a Belfast literary culture that was passionate, provocative and politically engaged. Lyrically gifted, his passing robbed us of a great talent who, as an editor and teacher, was also a great nurturer of talent in others. Mairtin’s 20th anniversary was an opportunity for friends to remember him in poetry and song, at The Deer’s Head, Belfast, as part of the ‘Out To Lunch Arts Fesival’. 102

Design Expert Predicts Biggest Home Trends for 2024 Design Director, Richard Eaton, from British brand Denby, has used his industry expertise, along with some Google trend research and input from other interior specialists, to compile a summary of the key interior trends he expects to see in 2024. Kitchens get a spa makeover Neutral, organic hues have long been a popular option for kitchens. Going into 2024, we’ll be taking this to the next level, incorporating natural materials to create a more rustic and serene space. Think of this trend as a combination of the clean and cosy ‘vanilla girl aesthetic’ and ‘nature luxe’ trend, both of which were popularised this year. Taking inspiration from the pared-back luxury of spa décor, the kitchen will become a space for relaxation, reflection and rejuvenation. Japandi makes a comeback While Japandi first entered the trend sphere back in 2021, this seamless blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design briefly fell from our radar, but it’s back just in time for 2024. Over the last 12 months, Google searches for ‘Japandi’ are up 104%. This look is somewhat similar to the spa kitchen trend we’re currently seeing, with a focus on organic materials and earthy tones like cream, grey and brown. Where this look really stands out is in its sustainability. Organic, contemporary styles bring nature indoors while second-hand furniture pieces add character and charm to a space. Texture comes to the forefront While boucle fabrics are a key trend for autumn 2023, this is part of a much wider textured trend. Sophie Clemson predicts that texture will enter every aspect of our interior décor. “Say goodbye to straight lines and hello to decorative finishes,” says Sophie. “This year, decorative finishes such as the bobbin trend on photo frames, mirrors and lamps have been very popular, and we think these types of finishes are here to stay. You will be seeing more of this trend next year, whether it’s a curtain trim or a scalloped edge sideboard.”
Do’s & Don’ts of Home Decorating McMillan Interiors’ Catherine McMillan gives her advice for home decorating. You’ve read magazines, watched Interior Design Masters, spent countless hours looking through Pinterest... now what? Here is a great way to start – useful Do’s & Don’ts to make it enjoyable! Do take into account the architecture and positioning of your home. That is not to say you should be constrained to a particular style, but certain colours and patterns work better depending on the size of your windows and the height of your ceiling. Our northern light asks for a depth of tone and colour, and responds well to lovely, natural textures. Don’t limit yourself to a neutral palette. Try not to rule out the addition of pops of colour in fabrics for cushions or artwork. It gives the space much more personality and joy. Do be intentional about storage. Tidy is good, but ugly cupboards can ruin a lovely room. Thought-out storage can be the making of a great scheme, like matching recessed shelving on either side of a fireplace or a large footstool with storage for books. Don’t forget about the smallest room. We often encourage homeowners to hold their nerve and go bold. Go all out, have fun and create drama. www.mcmillaninteriors.co.uk 112

Renovate with Confidence: Kitchen Upgrades & Insights from Northern Ireland's leading Kitchen Manufacture for 55 years.
Plan Efficiently: Before embarking on the renovation process, it's crucial to plan efficiently. Consider how you currently utilise the space and pinpoint areas for improvement. Create a list of your requirements such as window placements, cooking and prepping workspace & storage space. This will help you collaborate closely with your Kitchen Designer to ensure that your new kitchen perfectly aligns with your needs and preferences. Storage Solutions: Adequate storage is crucial for a functional kitchen. A pantry can keep your kitchen organised and our customers love how they keep clutter at bay in the main kitchen. If you're tight for space, you can consider a corner pantry cupboard built into your kitchen floor space. Lighting plan: Lighting can transform the look and feel of your kitchen while enhancing its functionality. Consider a lighting plan that will bring together task lighting, ambient lighting, and accent lighting to create a welllit space that accommodates various activities, from food preparation to dining and entertaining. Appliances: Have a clear idea of the style or brand of appliances you desire, as this choice can significantly impact your budget. Research and decide on appliances that align with your kitchen's style and functionality needs while considering their cost implications. Making informed decisions about appliances upfront can help you allocate your budget more effectively during the renovation process. Set a Budget: Renovating a kitchen can be a significant investment, so it's essential to establish a realistic budget before you start your design. Remember you need to set a budget for the kitchen cabinetry and appliances. Once you set a budget you can save a lot of time and receive more realistic quotations from designers.

Michael said their products enable people with mobility issues to adapt their own homes to help them maintain independence and a better quality of life. “The stairlifts allow people to stay in their own homes and out of nursing homes, and the pandemic showed us the importance of that.” He also explained how the recycling of stairlifts is part of his business’ package and overall aims towards sustainability. “We offer a buy-back service which suits a lot of our customers because we can then install a stairlift from as little as £950, including installation,” he said. “That’s half the price of a new stairlift and it’s a big part of our new business because we are working hard towards sustainability through recycling,” he said, adding, “we aim to have electric vans within the next few years. 119
He said customer service is paramount, carrying the ethos started by his father. “My dad was always very aware that he was working with elderly people and that sometimes he was the only person they may have spoken to that day. It was never a case of a hard sell, but instead he took the time to listen to their needs and that was the ethos he always worked with.” The dedication to customer service continues today, through assurances about its many varied products. “The stairlifts come with full warranty and servicing plans and we even have a 24/7, 365 days a year aftercare service for our 5000+ customers. Plus, we also provide free delivery, assembly and demonstration for all our mobility products right across NI, so we always strive to go that extra mile for our customers.” For more information call 028 9188 2249 or visit www.stairliftsolutionsni.com

Bespoke Care in Your Home NOW IN BELFAST
Following the successful implementation of our bespoke care model in the North West we are now launching this service in the Greater Belfast area. Our bespoke approach combines traditional care such as medication supervision/administration, meal preparation and personal care whilst also placing a strong emphasis on social support and choice. We can also offer practical help such as light housework, shopping or taking loved ones to appointments, to church or even for a coffee in the local coffee house. We understand everyone is different, so we work with you, helping you to live as independently as possible and being able to enjoy what matters. Our approach has been widely acclaimed in the Northwest where service users, families and RQIA have given this approach positive feedback. Some of the feedback received by the RQIA inspector from service users’ families in Derry is given below. (This can be verified on the ROJA website in our report).
I had the opportunity to use the service recently for my elderly mother. The initial consultation was very efficient and informative and the caring needs were quickly sorted. The carer was an excellent young lady who had great empathy. Highly organised people who came to do an assessment were thorough, looked around the house and recorded all relevant information for care needed. Advanced care is a very good service. We have been using it now for a couple of months and couldn’t do without it.

Age NI Launches Good Vibrations To Support Mental Health Of Older Men Age NI has launched a major new programme aimed at supporting the mental health and wellbeing of men in Northern Ireland aged over 50. Age NI’s Good Vibrations programme has been funded by Movember and is one of only 16 projects selected across the world for its ‘Scaling What Works’ Mental Health Grant funding. Age NI identified a gap in mental health provision for men age 50+ as the charity’s Director of Marketing & Business Development, Siobhan Casey, explained: “We recognised a gap in the provision of dedicated health and mental health support for older men. There are almost 326,000 men aged over 50 in Northern Ireland, and in this demographic, suicide, alcoholism and the use of anti-depressants are alarmingly high. The latest Northern Ireland suicide statistics* revealed that 168 men aged over 50 took their own life last year. This accounted for 44% of male suicides of all ages in 2022, and the number was a staggering four and a half times that of females in the same age group. “Our research with over 300 older men revealed that they don’t know where to turn for advice and information on the new challenges of life beyond 50. This could be financial worries like pension and retirement planning in the later stage of working life, or the transition into retirement; it might be the stress of taking on caring responsibilities, managing a chronic illness or facing bereavement; or it may be a wake-up call triggering a re-evaluation of how to take better care of their health. Of course, all of these critical life challenges can have a massive impact on an individual’s stress, mental health, and overall health and wellbeing. And yet, there isn’t a single source of information or advice for this specific stage of life. “Thanks to the generous funding support from Movember, Good Vibrations aims to fill this information gap with tailor-made support, information and advice on all the topics men of this age group have
told us they want to know more about. This programme has been co-designed and developed with input from older men, and tapping into a wealth of expert health and wellbeing advice, on everything from stress, sleep, physical activity, relationships and healthy eating. We have also compiled a wide range of information on men’s health symptoms and screening checks on cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. “With huge thanks to Movember, we are delighted to be launching a brand new, comprehensive men’s health information booklet for men over 50, a new website platform (www.ageni.org/iconnect); a new podcast series, “How’s the Form”, hosted by Joe Lindsay and featuring some of Northern Ireland’s best known older men; men aged 50+ can also sign up for a six week group programme.” For more information on the Good Vibrations programme, or to request a copy of the Good Vibrations Men’s Health Guide, visit www.ageni.org/goodvibrations.
