D
uring a recent trip to Galway (on Bloomsday) I visited the former family home of Nora Barnacle and became inspired to read the notoriously difficult novel Ulysses, written by her husband James Joyce. Like many people, I have had a copy of the novel for years but was daunted by the prospect of reading it. I am now, however, well into the book and whilst the text is pretty dense, I am enjoying it. When there are references I don’t get or passages that just don’t seem to make sense, I can consult my book of explanatory notes or one of the many available online reading aids. It is a bit like learning a new language in terms of the effort required and satisfaction achieved. The novel is set on one day, 16th June 1904, and is very evocative of Dublin in the early 1900s. Joyce documented daily life in the city to the smallest detail, bringing the history of the place alive. I am taking my time to read Ulysses, re-reading some passages a few times. It is easy to see why the novel has fascinated academics for so long: there are so many levels of interpretation. According to one poll, about a third of those who start the book don’t finish it. Here’s hoping I last the course. QUOTE FOR THE MONTH

90 YEARS IN THE MAKING
COLUMN August 2024
LIFE & TIMES EDITED BY KATHY CLUGSTON
Kathy Clugston is a freelance radio presenter. She chairs the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ and presents the weekly entertainment show ‘The Ticket’ on BBC Radio Ulster.
Breaking the Mould This month, Kathy discusses how we should embrace our different features that make us unique. I saw a little girl on the street the other day who, like me, has poliosis. It sounds like some terrible disease but is in fact the absence of pigment in a section of hair, mostly commonly resulting in the white forelock some of you will know as the “Mallen streak”. The term comes from a 1973 novel by Catherine Cookson about a ruthless squire called Thomas Mallen, who had many illegitimate sons all of whom inherited his distinctive flash of white hair and basically came to no good. In mediaeval times this forelock was called a “witch’s streak” and we all know how those poor women fared. It’s interesting to note how many fictional baddies sport a white streak: Cruella de Vil, the Bride of Frankenstein, Sweeney Todd, Rogue from X-Men, or other physical difference like a scar or birthmark, warts or pockmarked skin: Miss Trunchbull, Freddie Krueger, Scar in the Lion King, Dr Poison in Wonder Woman, every single Bond villain. Our heroes and heroines have plentiful hair and unblemished skin (Harry Potter is one exception, but his cute lightning bolt is hidden under his fringe). In real life, we are apt to equate good looks with goodness, kindness, even talent, and the reverse to those who deviate from the perceived beauty ‘norm’. I wondered if the little girl with the white streak ever got a hard time from other kids or if they are taught these days not to tease or bully about physical appearance. At my primary school insults like ‘specky-four-eyes’, ‘freckle-face’ and ‘Duracell’ were thrown around with abandon but they were fairly tame and confined to school hours, not following everyone home online. What about when she becomes a teenager? Being an adolescent girl is no joke. Getting cast out of the peer group is the ultimate social death, and to fit in you have to look the part. What teenagers don’t
realise is that the hated characteristics that make you stand out - tight coily curls, poker straight hair, pale skin, dark skin, a flat or full chest, a big or small bum, bushy eyebrows, full lips – are the very things grown women will spend many hours and a small fortune trying to replicate with fake tan and freckle pens, suctions and injections, hair tools and boob jobs. What a lot of energy we expend trying to avoid looking ‘wrong’ in other people’s eyes. I recently caught a TV programme about the 80s pop group Bananarama, who were huge when I was a teenager. What struck me most looking at those early TV appearances was the clothing: baggy, shapeless boiler suits, DM boots and back-combed, messy hair. A slash of red lipstick was the only nod to traditional ideas of femininity. We longed to look like them and did as best we could with dungarees, rollerball lip gloss and Chelsea boots from Dolcis. There was such freedom in being a girl who wasn’t girlie, with no pressure to show any part of your body you didn’t want to. The girls I admired at school were the ones who looked different; who wore their ties really fat or super skinny, customised their canvas school bags, rolled their shirt sleeves up to their shoulders and had punky cropped hair. It was cool to stand out. I’m not sure if it is today with our mass culture, identikit fast fashion brands and social media influencers

telling us how to look and what to buy. Any hairdresser will tell you how bored they are of styling blonde beachy waves. Perhaps my jaded middle-aged eyes aren’t seeing the full picture. There are always pockets of creativity and style to be found. In the society pages of this magazine where formal dressing abounds, there’ll always be someone in bright red amid a sea of pastels; a man in a fancy waistcoat and winklepickers, a woman in a chic trouser suit with everyone else in a taffeta frock. More power to them, and to the little girl with the Mallen streak skipping happily along the street with not a care in the world. Who wants to look like everyone else anyway?

DONAGHADEE SAILING CLUB REGATTA Donaghadee Sailing Club’s 52nd Annual Regatta was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Despite the rain, seventeen boats ventured out to battle a strong tide in light winds in the morning; only seven managed to cross the finish line and the later races were abandoned. The afternoon Regatta party welcomed Commodores past and present from clubs around Belfast Lough as well as Alistair Cathcart, Mayor of Ards and North Down. The Mayor presented prizes to the junior sailors who had ventured out in the morning and Greg Yarnall, CEO of RYANI, was on hand to say a few words. MCHENRY BELFAST SKIN CLINIC, 18 DERAMORE DRIVE, BELFAST, BT9 5JQ
Can you tell us about your background; what led you to become a dermatologist ? As the second eldest of 9 children, caring for others was integral to my upbringing. Growing up on a farm, we all had our chores to do and I learnt from an early age the importance of commitment and team work. Medicine felt like a natural career choice for me. I thrive on challenges and the fact that medical training was considered difficult attracted me to it even more. I studied medicine at Queen’s University Belfast and from my first attendance at dermatology clinics as a medical student, I was struck by the impact skin disease had on peoples’ lives and how diagnosing and treating skin problems could significantly improve quality of life. The potential to treat patients of all ages, the challenge of learning about the vast range of possible diagnoses in dermatology (over 2,000 conditions), and the wide spectrum of treatment options appealed to me. What training is required to become a consultant dermatologist? After graduating from medical school, it takes another 7-10 years of training before being eligible to become a consultant dermatologist. Initially, 3 years are spent on general medical training. This is important because skin disease can often be the presenting sign of other underlying medical problems. In order to then apply for a dermatology training post, success in further postgraduate exams, usually to gain Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP), is required. The basic dermatology training takes a further 4 years and, in addition, many dermatologists choose to pursue additional fellowship training in subspecialty areas such as dermatologic surgery, cosmetic dermatology, or paediatric dermatology to further enhance their expertise in specific areas of dermatology. To be registered as a dermatologist on the GMC specialist register, passing the specialist exit exam is required. Throughout life, continuous education and training are essential for dermatologists to stay up to date with the latest advancements in the field and ensure they provide the highest quality of care for their patients. What motivated you to establish the Belfast Skin Clinic? My vision was to provide a unique private healthcare facility in which all specialists involved in the management of patients with skin and skin related disorders could work closely together to ensure the smooth transition of care to the most appropriate specialist depending on individual patient needs. To deliver this service, I had three key objectives: the provision of the highest quality in staff, technology, and facilities/ infrastructure. Our team of experienced dermatologists, plastic, ocular, and vascular surgeons, rheumatologists, laser specialists, aesthetic practitioners, facial therapists, and nutritionists work closely together when appropriate to provide patients with the best treatment options to address their specific needs. Patient education and empowerment
is a priority; we aim to ensure that our patients are well informed and have the knowledge they need to maintain healthy skin in the long-term. What facilities do you have at the Belfast Skin Clinic? The clinic is conveniently located in south Belfast, with easy access to public transport and all major motorways. The state-of-the-art facility has 10 consulting rooms, an operating theatre and a Mohs laboratory. The clinic is fully accessible, with wheelchair access throughout, ensuring that patients with specific mobility requirements can easily navigate the space. While good lighting and rigorous infection control was a priority in the building design (all rooms are equipped with high frequency air exchange), the building was also designed to create a calming, welcoming and professional environment. Can you tell us about the range of services offered at the Belfast Skin Clinic? The clinic treats all age groups and provides a full range of dermatological, surgical, and aesthetic services, ensuring that patients can receive comprehensive care under one roof. Conditions treated include all dermatology conditions from inflammatory conditions such as eczema and psoriasis to lesions requiring surgical removal including cysts, moles, and skin cancer. Our dermatologists work closely with the plastic surgeons, particularly for the treatment of skin cancer patients. They liaise with vascular surgeons regarding patients with varicose veins, varicose eczema, or leg ulceration. Rheumatologists are often required for assessment of conditions where there may be joint and skin involvement, for example, in psoriasis or lupus. Medical treatment of conditions such as acne, rosacea, or sun damage can be complemented by treatments offered by our skin therapists and laser specialists. All of our aesthetic services work closely together. I believe it’s important to aim for healthy glowing skin as an adjunct to any other anti-aging procedure. Services available at the clinic include: Skin cancer screening/mole mapping Allergy testing/patch testing Excision of benign and malignant lesions Sclerotherapy/ablation of veins Lasers for vascular lesions, scar treatment, hair removal, skin rejuvenation Mohs Surgery (a precise surgical technique used to treat skin cancer, offering high cure rates and maximum tissue preservation) Cosmetic surgery including upper and lower blepharoplasty, pinnaplasty, brow lift, lip lift, and labiaplasty, hand surgery, scar treatment Skin rejuvenating treatments including bespoke facials, medical grade Dermalux LED therapy, skin peels, micro-needling/ radio-frequency treatments, anti-wrinkle injections and injections with platelet rich plasma (PRP), Polynucleotides, Profhilo, and fillers. Setting the benchmark for excellence in a healthcare facility, we continuously evaluate and update what we offer to ensure our patients benefit from the latest developments. We are committed to using
cutting-edge technology and to providing the highest standard of care. Can you tell us about some of the technology available at the Belfast Skin Clinic? At the Belfast Skin Clinic we have a range of state-of-the-art technologies including Mohs surgery for skin cancer, Fotofinder whole body mole mapping for early identification of changing suspicious moles, and a range of lasers. The Belfast Skin Clinic is the only private facility in Northern Ireland to offer Mohs surgery, a highly specialised surgical technique for removal of certain types of skin cancer, particularly on the face. Our SplendorX laser is highly effective for hair removal while our M22 IPL machine offers effective treatment for a range of skin conditions including rosacea, brown spots and skin ageing. Both can be used for treating vascular lesions such as angioma and facial thread veins. We offer PlateletRich Plasma (PRP) therapy which is useful for treating hair thinning and promoting skin rejuvenation, and our new Secret Pro machine provides a combination of radio frequency and micro-needling, as well as a CO2 laser for skin rejuvenation and the treatment of scarring. Additionally, our medical grade Dermalux LED machines can treat various causes of skin inflammation. Having skilled staff who know when and how to use equipment safely and correctly is critical to achieving good outcomes. What is unique about the Belfast Skin Clinic? I would say the skills of our staff, the range of services available and the accessibility of collaboration between dermatology, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, rheumatologists, laser specialists, aesthetic practitioners, skin therapists, and nutritionists are what make us unique. This enables us to offer patients a multidisciplinary approach to treatment and care. We operate a paperless system for patient records, meaning these can be accessed by all the consultants involved in patient care. This facilitates shared care and allows for a much more comprehensive evaluation and the development of a treatment plan that addresses all aspects of a patient’s concerns. For some aesthetic concerns, input from dermatologists, plastic surgeons, aesthetic practitioners, laser specialists, and skin therapists may all be required to achieve the best results. So our team-based approach ensures the patient is seeing the right consultant for their individual problem. What do you feel has been the most important factor for the success of the Belfast Skin Clinic? Teamwork has been the most important factor contributing to the clinic’s success. I feel privileged to work with a very special group of people, who are very supportive of each other. They are all aware that, irrespective of their role, they all contribute to our patients’ journeys and, ultimately, to the best outcomes for them.

Princess Anne demonstrated an impressive knowledge of all of the recipients and engaged in a conversation with Kathleen on her career journey. With forty years devoted to the field of education including 16 years as the head of prominent city schools, in Derry - St Cecilia’s College and north Belfast - Hazelwood Integrated College; there was a lot to talk about. THE
Ulster Tatler speaks to hymn-writer Keith Getty who, along with his wife Kristyn Getty, is celebrating 20 years of Getty Music.
You are celebrating two decades in music, how does it feel to reach that milestone? I think turning 50 this Christmas and bringing our Christmas show home to Belfast is pretty much our absolute dream. To be there with family, friends and the guys at New Irish, it really just doesn’t get any better.
You split your time between America and Northern Ireland; what do you love most about your two homes? In Ireland, it is the beauty, the music, the passion and the fact that we stand on 17 centuries of people who have tried to tell this story of Christianity in music. In America, it is the energy and the opportunity to constantly improve, change the world, and of course the fact they love our Irish-ness!
Have you always been musically driven and how did it evolve from a passion into a career? I originally preferred sport but wasn’t very good! The key moment was getting a guitar while I was at Pond Park Primary. From then on, it’s pretty much all I did, initially playing and then more writing.
Are there any particular moments in your career that stand out? There are many, but the greatest joy for Kristyn and I has been the privilege of walking this journey together and the fact that each step along the way has been a gradual journey. We’ve many friends who’ve had sudden rushes of success and the whole thing has collapsed down the road.
Who are your musical inspirations? We have so many. We love anybody who could write classic melodies, from Bach and Gershwin and the Beatles, to Irish traditional folk songs and hymns that move us when we sing them. Hymn-writing has connotations of being an older/traditional craft; how did you bring it into the modern era? Partly hard work and determination! I really believed it could change people, families, churches and the whole of society. Partly good fortune, in that when I was 25, I met an older writer called Stuart Townend and we co-wrote the hymn “In Christ Alone” (the first hymn of mine to be released) and it became one of the biggest songs in the history of church music. From then on everything gained pace. In Christ Alone has become one of your best-known hymns; why do you think it resonated with so many people? I’ve thought about this many times. I think if I’m being honest I’d admit that it was the first one, so I really can’t take too much credit. Part of it is the mystery of creative writing. Part of it is definitely the idea of a hymn that went through the Christian faith, almost as a “national anthem of Christianity”. The other part is my northern Irish musical heritage coming through in the melody. I never understood why old church music sounded English and modern church music sounded American, when our musical language here in Ireland is so well suited to people gathering to sing.
Touring is a big part of what you do, what makes touring your material so special? I think it’s partly Kristyn and I getting to share the music together and hearing how it’s taken root, whether on a big world tour like last year, or in an event in a community church, or coming home to Belfast. I think coming back here is always special, and since we involved our daughters it has added more to it. What can people expect when they see you on tour? The Irish Christmas show ties in all the greatest things about music in Ireland at Christmas – the first half is an Irish party and the second half is an Irish carol service, based on a shortened version of the nine lessons and carols. The first half has performances from Kristyn and the band, we bring in friends, also featuring instruments and dance – it is hilarious. The second half is a 60-minute version of the Christmas story in lessons and carols and features many of the great hymns that were written in Ireland for the whole audience to sing, finishing in a big celebration. Afterwards we usually have a lobby jam, where the musicians jam in the lobby for people to enjoy.
What is your advice to young and aspiring musicians/songwriters? Go deeper with your writing all the time and work hard (I’m sure 1/100 of my song ideas makes it to being a song). Love the people you serve with your music, whether it’s the artists or band you write for or the people who love your music. As a Christian I like to think of it as an application of the greatest command – loving God with all your heart and loving your neighbour as yourself. Finally, you are bringing your Christmas Show to Northern Ireland this December for the very first time. The first night at the SSE Arena sold out, and you’ve just announced a second night. How does that make you feel and what can people expect to see at the concerts? We are unbelievably grateful to all our friends back home and unbelievably excited about the concerts themselves. It will be an incredible way to turn 50!

My 1.
Paul Jervis Photographer
What do you love most about your job? First and foremost, meeting people. For commercial shoots, it is collaborating on and delivering the brief and seeing the final results. For weddings, it is the sheer privilege of being part of such a special day, reflecting who the couple are and creating lasting memories. 2. What has been your career highlight to date? Leaving my role as a branch manager in an estate agency to start a photography business, but more importantly to be able to spend more time with our kids. A highlight was my first Ulster Tatler cover shoot for Algram with Katharine Walker. I stepped way out of my comfort zone as I had done nothing like that before. I have gone on to shoot 13 covers (I think) and still get nervous, but at a healthy level that means I care and want to do a good job. I have to say, Katharine was great and made my job a lot easier. Another would be when we rebranded and added two new brands to Paul Jervis Photography: Jervis Wedding Photography and Newborns by Judith. This was special as, while my wife, Judith, had been my assistant at weddings since day one, over time she
had become a great photographer and a second shooter at all weddings and this is when our branding better reflected who we are. Paul Jervis Photography became the commercial and portrait side of the business and Newborns by Judith speaks for itself. 3. What are your favourite hobbies/activities outside of work? Having bought a VW camper van just over a year ago, this has become a big part of my life and adventures. Judith and I have just returned from a week ‘vanlifeing’ in Dingle for our 30th wedding anniversary. I love cooking, especially in my Ooni, getting into the hills and trips to coffee shops. I bought a kayak this year but have still to get it into the water. I am also a Belfast Giants fan and hold a season ticket with my son. 4. What is your daily routine? It really does vary and I am in the minority who work better at night (I am typing this at 1am!) so no early morning rises unless I have to be up for a shoot or wedding. A non-wedding/shoot day would mean my alarm going off at about 8am and after a few snoozes, I finally get up. The coffee machine goes on for espresso and then I take time out to read the Bible, reflect, pray, meditate and recentre. After breakfast, I will sit down in front of my computer and look over my to-do list for the day. That could be client meetings, prep work for a shoot, checking gear, processing photos, marketing, admin, etc. I do try to stop for lunch and would normally make dinner, then back to some more work until late. 5. Do you have a specific fitness regime? I wish! The last couple of years I have focused on hillwalking and walking. This tends to go well in the winter months when there are fewer weddings but as business ramps up fitness commitments tend to go the other way. I’m not so much a “Stud Muffin”, maybe more a “Stud Pastie”! 36
6. Do you have any tips for staying positive? I realise it is hard in this type of business not to be on social platforms, but limit/ control your social media consumption. I have turned off most notifications on my phone so only see them when I choose to open the app. For a while now I have been leaving my phone in a separate room to our bedroom which has been great in preventing the endless morning scrolling before I even get up, which ultimately led to comparison fatigue and low mood. Perspective. If your identity is not wrapped up solely in your job and its success but is also as a spouse, partner, parent, friend, then if and when difficult times come, you have the ability to look at all aspects of your life and the joy they can bring you. If success is solely about you, you have more to lose. 7. What do you think is the best thing about living in Northern Ireland? I love the variety and proximity of the countryside, from climbing in the Mournes to walks on north coast beaches. 8. What is your mantra or favourite quote that you live by? I would in no way pretend to live by these quotes, but they are principles I am working hard to live out. “How we structure our time structures our values”. This is something I find challenging as I want to give my all and serve my clients well but this can be to the detriment of family, friends and my own time to reset and reflect. “Comparison is the thief of joy”. This is one that popped up a lot in socials recently and something I struggle with, so fully understand its wisdom and truth. 9. Who has been your biggest influence? There have been so many people who have invested in my life over the years; to name them all would be like a bad award acceptance speech. However, the person who had the biggest influence on me to become a photographer would be another amazing photographer, Stephen Wilson, who freely gave advice and his time before and after I started Paul Jervis Photography 15 years ago.

INTERVIEW
A Natural Broadcaster Rita Fitzgerald talks to Jane Hardy about Anthony Bourdain, dressing down and what makes a great TV presenter.
A
sked what makes a good TV presenter, UTV’s Rita Fitzgerald (53) doesn’t hesitate. “My goodness! Personally, I think the more natural the better. It’s the kind of person I am and when broadcasting, I try to be myself. I use my own local accent and find that way I connect with people. When interviewing, I chat to people as if I’m talking to my friends.” And it works. Fitzgerald co-presents UTV Life with Pamela Ballantine (“She’s wonderful to work with!”) and has a new show this autumn as one of three presenters on UTV’s popular series, Hidden Northern Ireland. She’s been editing footage the day we talk and says: “I’m not sure how much I am allowed to reveal at this stage but it’s now a three header with me, Stewart Robson and Barbara McCann. We all looked after by producer Alison Fleming. And one of the things we do together is visit a cruise ship, the Regal Princess, and get behind the scenes. Not quite Below Deck, but they let us loose and I got to go behind the stage in a way, meeting people.” The other “lovely things” the reporter has been able to do include visiting a museum in Armagh, setting eyes on art that no member of the public had ever seen. “I saw fabulous period costumes too.” A career highlight was covering the 2023 BAFTAs from London. “There was such a buzz as you were shoulder-to-shoulder with other press. Then the celebrities arrived. Emma Thompson was there. My daughter Ellie, who is 13, introduced me to Stranger Things and the actor who plays papa, Martin Brenner, came along and I interviewed him and he gave a wee shout-out to her. It was the best craic.” Fitzgerald also spotted James Martin and the cast and director of An Irish Goodbye, so buttonholed them. “I spoke
to them and you just knew they were going to do well (at the Oscars). I spotted them and they spotted me and it was such a love-fest with Paddy Jenkins and the others. It was a moment I’ll never forget.” Someone she never got to interview but would have loved to is the late French philosopherchef Anthony Bourdain. “I’m such a great fan of the food guru Bourdain. Part of it was he was very attractive but he was subversive too, didn’t take anything too seriously.” A recognisable celebrity, Fitzgerald says she doesn’t mind being spotted on the street. “No, I love seeing people who recognise me. Before I grew into my skin a couple of years ago, I used to put on a bit of a face when I went out, living up to the image. But I’m done with that now and I am me. Because I don’t put on an image, whether I am in my tracksuits or heels, it makes no difference. If I have no make-up on, look as if I’ve been dragged through a ditch, I find although people recognise you, they tend to leave you alone!” Rita Fitzgerald’s broadcasting heroes are fairly laid back and range from Gloria Hunniford (“It’s difficult to get past Gloria, who is amazing.”), Pamela Ballantine (“Obviously!”) to the Radio Two presenter Lisa Tarbuck. “She fires off the microphone and says whatever comes into her head. She talks about food, about being hungry, anything. The odd time it gets her into trouble, but she is funny.” Fitzgerald started out in radio and remembers hosting a Seven FM show some years back. “I did it for a couple of years, loved talk radio and was very close to the job.” A late starter, Rita Fitzgerald went from school to Sunderland University – “I scratched good enough A levels to just get to university” –

then travelled. She TEFL-ed, that is taught English as a foreign language and spent four years living in France near Toulouse. She tutored aerospace engineers as the French aerospace centre was in the area. Fitzgerald says that she had great conversations with her students, which led by a circuitous route to her current glittering career. “I had great conversations which made me think I could do interviews. I remember talking to an elderly Cambodian doctor who told me all about life under the Khmer Rouge, which was incredible.” So at 33, Rita Fitzgerald enrolled at Trinity and All Saints College, affiliated to Leeds University, to study media and broadcast journalism. “I hadn’t planned on coming back to Northern Ireland but then I got a placement back home in Belfast and thought ‘why not’. I started to love it, met John my husband, who is an architect.” Theirs was apparently love at first sight, the coup de foudre. John runs an architectural practice, Dickson Fitzgerald, and most recently has redesigned one of the couple’s favourite bars, formerly the Egg or Eglantine near Queen’s, now named Post House. While Ms Fitzgerald has an enjoyable working and home life, she has recently suffered loss. Her mother Anne, who latterly suffered from Alzheimer’s, died a few weeks before we talked. “I’m part of a large family, nine children, and two are in Australia but the rest of us took turns staying overnight with my mum so she could remain in her own home as long as possible.” Rita reports that Anne’s wake was memorable, a great event. “She was a character, all my friends came to our house and were fed. So there were a lot of people there and it was a celebration.” Fitzgerald is an open interviewee and is happy to mention her recent menopause journey. “It wasn’t too bad and I have come

out the other side,” she says, adding that when reading interviews with well known people, she doesn’t like it if their lives are presented as utterly perfect. “It isn’t realistic.” However, after also losing her mother-in-law, Margy, who she was very close to, she and John are going to mark his sixtieth birthday with a trip to Egypt to see the Pyramids and float down the Nile. They are also planning a big family get-together at their place in Rathmullan, Donegal. “There will be about thirty of us with people putting down beds wherever they can.” The media life continues, busy and fulfilling as Fitzgerald works her three, occasionally four-day week. Relaxation may involve Prosecco! Would she like to see Ellie follow her into the media? “No, she isn’t keen and would, I think, like to earn a lot more than I do.” Rita with her daughter and husband in Donegal.

Rebecca is founder and Director of Physiotherapy at Apex Clinic and Apex Headache Clinic.
Apex Headache Clinic has been successfully treating headaches and migraines for over 25 years, This month, Apex Headache Clinic Founder and Spinal & Headache Physiotherapy Specialist, Rebecca Nelson offers some interesting facts on headaches and shares how the clinic’s team of specialist headache physiotherapists treat and clear headaches and migraines. known reason why the neck became stiff and tight in the first place. The first drug-free headache clinic in Ireland Apex Headache Clinic opened its doors years ago, and people travel from many different countries worldwide for our specialist treatment, called The Nelson Headache Approach™. This approach is offered in no other clinic at this time. Along with my team of specialist headache physiotherapists, we have been successfully treating headaches and migraines for over 20 years and we’re very proud of our high success rate. Headaches ruin lives At Apex Headache Clinic, Belfast, we know the devastating impact that headaches and migraines can have on people’s lives, leaving the person desperate to find a cure to relieve their pain. Tension and stress are frequently blamed as the cause of these headaches, which often leads to people taking painkillers on a daily basis. However, painkillers don’t provide a long-term solution. What many people are unaware of, is that there is often a physical cause for their headaches, which actually stems from their neck. The great news is that, in the vast majority of cases, this can be successfully treated and cleared without the need for medication. Neck-triggered headaches and migraines are often the result of poor posture, hours spent hunched over desks and computers, repeated heavy lifting or a previous injury. Sometimes there is no
to support the head and neck, and reduce compressive stresses on the structures of the neck whilst sleeping. However, many pillows are too soft or too flat and so headache sufferers may find they wake up with a headache the next day. To fight the war against poor pillows, I have designed the Apex Sleepwell Pillow range, clinically proven to reduce neck pain and headaches in the majority of cases. Each pillow is uniquely designed in terms of thickness and firmness to match the needs of sleepers according to their build, from children to teens, right through to mediumsized adults and larger builds.
GET CLEAR ON THE FACTS SURROUNDING HEADACHES Too many painkillers can cause headaches It is uncommonly known that excessive medication can actually make headaches worse. In fact, 50% of migraine sufferers will receive no relief from medication used to treat migraines in the first place. Of those patients who do respond to medication, they are very likely to become used to it and therefore, over time, the medication will become less effective. But the good news is that my Nelson Headache Approach™ has been shown to be a highly effective, drug-free method of clearing or significantly reducing headaches and migraines in the vast majority of cases.
Headaches affect children too Parents often contact Apex Headache Clinic after trying many other approaches, including consulting GPs, paediatricians, neurologists or opticians, with no relief. We offer hope to families who are at the end of their tether, thanks to our drug-free, specialist approach to clearing headaches and migraines in all ages.

My pain is gone thanks to Apex Clinic! For 64-year-old Betty Smith from Newtownards, severe shoulder pain and lower back pain following a car accident were having a devastating impact on her life. Desperate to get some relief she visited, Apex Clinic, Belfast. Here, Betty describes how the clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment, called The Nelson Spinal ApproachTM, cleared her constant pain.
Betty, when did your shoulder pain and lower back pain begin? I was in a car accident one-and-a-half years ago, when another vehicle drove into the side of my car. Immediately after the accident I thought I was ok but the next day I woke up with severe pain in my shoulder and lower back. I went to see my GP and they recommended I try physiotherapy to alleviate the pain. The pain was so bad my posture was affected, even how I stood. How did the pain affect your life? I was always sore and always in pain. I work with kids, and this was a real struggle especially if I needed to lift them out of the car or if they fell over. When I would lift the children, I would be in agony and it would make my pain much worse. What led you to Apex Clinic? I attended Apex Clinic many years ago for a trapped nerve that I had from doing a lot of swimming and Apex helped me back then. When I needed physiotherapy treatment for my shoulder and back pain, I wanted to go somewhere that I knew and that was highly recommended, so I gave Apex Clinic a call. How has your life changed since having treatment? It’s absolutely brilliant, my pain has gone! As well as the manual treatment that I received for my shoulder pain and lower back pain, my specialist physiotherapist also gave me advice and strategies to put in place to help me manage everyday tasks such as hoovering without aggravating my shoulder pain. It is such a simple thing, but it made such a difference to me. I attend Apex Clinic every few months now for maintenance treatment to keep my pains away. What advice would you offer someone suffering with shoulder pain or lower back pain? I would definitely say go and see one of the specialist physios in Apex Clinic because they do a fantastic job. They are so informative and explain everything, you come away understanding your condition and with useful advice to put into; action. To book an appointment at Apex Clinic, call 028 9048 4153. Striving For Excellence Ulster Tatler speaks to Lynsey Cleland from Hair & Co Newtownards, who recently won ‘Large Salon of the Year’ at the NI Beauty Excellence Awards. When did you first set up Hair & Co? In 2004, I assumed ownership of Hair & Co in Newtownards. The salon, which was founded in 1980, has seen significant growth under my leadership. Starting with just three staff members, we have now expanded to a team of 14 and have also introduced beauty services in addition to our hair services.
What do you love most about your job? One of the aspects of my job that I cherish the most is my team. Their enthusiasm, eagerness to learn and grow, and dedication to their craft when creating hairstyles for our clients is truly inspiring. The values that we share as a team are what keeps Hair & Co motivated and driven to provide exceptional service.
How did it feel to win ‘Large Hair Salon of the Year’ at the recent NI Beauty Excellence Awards? Being awarded Large Salon of the Year at the 2024 NI Beauty Excellence Awards was an incredibly thrilling achievement for me and my team. We are absolutely ecstatic and grateful for this recognition.
What have been the most memorable moments during your career? One of the most memorable events in my career was the expansion of my salon, doubling its size to accommodate our growing team and clientele. Another unforgettable experience was travelling around Europe to collaborate with Alfaparf ambassadors, which enriched my skills and knowledge in the industry.
What sets your salon apart, what makes you unique? Our salon stands out for our strong connection with clients through social media and active involvement in the Newtownards community. We pride ourselves on creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere that makes clients feel like friends. Our commitment to continuous learning sets us apart, as we regularly attend additional courses and bring top ambassadors to our salon to ensure we are using advanced and up-to-date techniques. We also prioritise team-building by organising awareness days, mental health activities, and yoga sessions to foster a supportive and united team.
My husband’s decision to learn hairdressing, leaving his job to pursue training and successfully completing his qualifications was a pivotal moment. His dedication and contribution have been instrumental in helping me grow the team and further enhance our salon’s offerings. What advice would you give to anyone looking to get into hairdressing? For anyone considering a career in hairdressing, my advice is to embrace this amazing job that offers fantastic rewards. The impact you have on how people feel about themselves and the positive changes you can bring to their overall well-being is truly rewarding. The ability to
uplift and transform someone’s confidence through your work is a privilege that makes this profession truly special. What are your future plans for the business? Our future plans for Hair & Co revolve around creating the ideal work-life balance for our team and clients. We aim to foster an environment where our team can thrive professionally while maintaining a healthy personal life. We are committed to growing and consistently wowing our clients by enhancing all our treatments and services. Our goal is to continue providing exceptional experiences and exceeding expectations in all aspects of our salon. Who has been the biggest influence in your career? The biggest influences in my career have been my husband, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and grandfather. They have all played a significant role in instilling belief in myself and encouraging me to pursue my dreams. Within the salon, there is a wall adorned with an inspiring black and white photo of my grandmother and grandfather, serving as a constant reminder of their influence and inspiration. This photo motivates me and the team every day to work towards our goals and strive for excellence.

Travelling abroad for dental treatment:
ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW An increasing number of people from this part of the world are travelling abroad to undertake lower-cost dental treatments which they could not otherwise afford at home. We have all, however, heard the warnings around the risks involved in availing of such services far from home. If you are thinking about going abroad for dental work, it is essential that you consider a range of factors other than just cost e.g. a clinic’s reputation with other overseas patients, the qualifications of the practitioners, your rights and protections in the country of treatment should something go wrong. Before committing to treatment, you must receive a fully costed treatment plan including information on any risks associated with the treatment and details of follow-up care. Kreativ Dental Clinic in Budapest, Hungary has been treating patients from Ireland and around the world for over 20 years. Mary Flanagan, the clinic’s representative in Ireland, outlined that the clinic has an expert team of dental specialists offering high-quality care using state-of-the-art technology. They have a proven track record when it comes to patient safety and quality of treatment and, importantly, there is an after-care service in Ireland. Planning for overseas treatment can take some time and effort but it is crucial that you get the right advice and support beforehand. Ideally, speak to someone who has travelled to the clinic before; Mary Flanagan of Kreativ Dental Clinic is a former patient herself and will happily share her experiences and answer any questions. The clinic offers a free consultation, including an OPG X-ray and a full breakdown of the treatment plan. It is then your decision if you wish to proceed with treatment or not.

Doctor’s Orders: Simplifying Diet Plans and Nutrition This month, we’re diving into the realm of diet plans and nutrition. As a functional medicine doctor, I often encounter questions about how to optimise health and longevity through diet. With so much information out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Let’s break down some key topics and myths surrounding nutrition. Time-Restricted Eating and Fasting: Is It a Magic Bullet? Fasting and time-restricted eating have gained popularity for their potential health benefits, but are they truly the key to longevity and optimal health?
- Disrupting sleep, influences appetite hormones and decision-making. - Reducing the quality of your workouts. - Increasing visceral fat distribution. - Decreasing thyroid function, leads to a slower metabolism.
Benefits: - Reduced Caloric Intake: Fasting can help reduce overall calorie consumption.
Managing stress through techniques like mindfulness, regular exercise, and adequate sleep can help support your weight loss efforts and overall well-being.
- Bowel Rest: Allows the digestive system to rest, which can be beneficial for gut health. Disadvantages: - Muscle Mass Maintenance: Older adults may struggle to maintain or build muscle mass since muscle protein synthesis is less efficient with age. Fasting could interfere with this process. - Difficult to Maintain: Fasting protocols can be challenging to stick to, making it more likely for individuals to fall off the plan. This inconsistency can lead to additional stress, particularly if your body is already under strain from other factors. At the end of the day, fasting can improve metabolic health and aid in weight loss for some people. However, it’s not a magic solution. A recent human randomised control trial found no significant difference in weight loss or metabolic markers between daily caloric restriction and early intermittent fasting when calorie intake was equal. The fasting group even had slightly worse glycemic control. This reinforces the idea that fasting works because it helps some people eat fewer calories, not because it has inherent metabolic advantages. Does Stress Impact Weight Loss? Absolutely. When it comes to weight loss, stress is often an overlooked factor that can significantly slow your progress. Chronic stress affects your body in multiple ways, making it harder to shed those extra pounds and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Here are some of the ways stress can impact your weight loss journey: - Increasing cravings for unhealthy foods.
Avoiding Carbohydrates at Night: Myth or Fact? Carbs at night are not uniquely fattening. The idea that eating before bed leads to weight gain because you don’t burn off the calories is a misunderstanding of metabolism. Your body continues to metabolise nutrients and create fuel while you sleep. Weight gain or loss depends on total calorie intake, not the timing of your meals. Food Order and Blood Sugar Spikes Do you need to worry about the order in which you eat your food to limit post-meal glucose responses? Not necessarily. While some studies suggest eating vegetables and protein before carbs can reduce glucose and insulin spikes, the long-term effects are negligible. A 16-week randomised control trial found no significant differences in glycemic control or insulin sensitivity based on food order. However, eating veggies and protein first might help control appetite and reduce overall calorie intake. Simplifying Health and Nutrition Health doesn’t need to be overcomplicated. Focus on these points to live a strong and healthy life… Optimise Muscle Health Muscle health is crucial for overall well-being, impacting mobility, pain management, metabolic control, blood sugar regulation, and reducing the risk of injury and chronic pain. Here are key strategies to enhance muscle health: - Aim for 30g of protein per meal: Consuming adequate protein is essential for
maintaining and building muscle mass. As we age, muscle protein synthesis becomes less efficient, making it even more important to ensure we get enough protein to support muscle health. - Support Strength Training: Engaging in regular strength training exercises not only builds muscle mass but also strengthens bones, enhances cardiovascular health, and boosts mental health. Strength training combined with adequate protein intake can lead to significant improvements in muscle health, contributing to overall physical and mental well-being. Optimise Your Diet with Healthy Choices 1. Choose High-Quality, Fresh Food Sources: Focus on whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, lean meats, dairy, and eggs. These provide essential nutrients without the additives and preservatives found in ultraprocessed foods, which are linked to chronic diseases like cancer. Reserve processed foods as occasional treats rather than daily staples. 2. Incorporate Fibre: Fibre is essential for digestive health and supports a thriving gut microbiome. Include fibre-rich foods such as whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables to maintain optimal gut function and overall well-being. 3. Understand Portion Sizes: Initially weigh your food to develop a visual understanding of appropriate portion sizes. This practice can help you maintain control over your calorie intake and ensure balanced nutrition. Once you become familiar with portion sizes, you can rely on intuitive eating to sustain healthy eating habits. Remember, the best diet is one that fits your lifestyle and preferences, allowing you to enjoy food while promoting overall health and wellness. Avoid overly restrictive diets and instead focus on balanced choices that support your long-term goals.

From Lurgan to global business coach, Fiona Harrold shares her journey with Ulster Tatler.

MILLIONS WITH THEIR MESSAGE Her experience of growing up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, coupled with the influence of her forward-thinking parents, instilled in ‘the Queen Bee of British Coaching,’ Fiona Harrold, a drive and determination to succeed. Originally from Lurgan, the London-based business coach has authored the best-selling book ‘Be Your Own Life Coach’, presented her teachings on a world stage, and mentored entrepreneurs to share their message with millions globally. Reflecting on her childhood, Fiona says: “Life seemed to change overnight, or rather in the space of a couple of days. It was life one way and then a couple of days later, it was completely different. “My dad was from the south of Ireland and my mum was from Ballywalter. My mum always had this idea when she was growing up, she was absolutely adamant she would not marry someone from her village. “She met my dad, he was from the south, and at the time in her village… let’s just that it wasn’t well received. So, there was a great deal of hostility, and they moved to Lurgan.” Fiona has bittersweet memories of her “pristine” childhood home that her mother so lovingly “papered and painted” from top to bottom. Due to the political situation at the time, the family had to leave their home. “We just piled up our belongings, what we could take, and we went to an empty housing estate in Craigavon. Craigavon was just being built at the time. And it caused a huge furore. I mean, we were squatting in empty houses. The housing authority went crazy, whatever you want to call it, and they said: ‘This is completely illegal,’ unbelievably. ‘You have no right to be there and you need to get out now’. “Guess what we did? We went to the papers. We were in the papers, we were on radio, and guess what happened? Suddenly, the housing authority backed down and said: ‘Well actually, there is a place’. And that is when I learned the power of the press.” This event was a pivotal moment in Fiona’s life: “After that incident, I made a decision – and I was probably 11 at the time – and the decision I made was that I wanted to live in a bigger place, and I also wanted to take complete responsibility for my life so I would never be in a situation like that again. “I guess maybe it was in me already, but this drive and determination came to the fore. I thought, ‘OK, I’m going to leave Northern Ireland and I need to make a plan’.” Encouraged and supported wholeheartedly by her parents, Fiona dedicated herself to studying. “I had my sights set on the ending,” she explains. “I wanted to do really well at school and get into university, because at the time, you know, having that degree was the passport to a new life. So that’s 95
what I did and after I finished university, I came to London.” Fiona embraced city life and worked as a cocktail bar waitress, involved herself with political campaigns including the miners’ strike, and wrote for a community newspaper before deciding it was time to dedicate herself to “something serious”. During this period, her interest in the world of personal development deepened and she began attending motivational seminars. “I wanted to find a calling; I didn’t just want a job or career,” Fiona says. “I found this person in London and she called herself a self-esteem consultant. I didn’t want to do counselling or therapy, I wanted somebody to challenge me and help me get a plan for my life, she called herself a self-esteem consultant, and she was challenging [me]. It was all about your thoughts, your career, you have to change your thoughts, your mind, all of this stuff, and also the practical plan. I thought, ‘Well, this is just perfect’. “I was a client of hers for a while, and she said to me one day, I actually think you could do this. I said: ‘You really think so?’ and she said: ‘100%, come on, you’re obsessed with this stuff, right?’ “I became her apprentice. This was before the word coaching was even invented.” When Fiona met the self-esteem coach, her teachings and philosophy reminded her of her
“I wanted to find a calling; I didn’t just want a job or career.” father’s approach to life. Fiona’s dad was a successful door-to-door salesman and she recalls going for drives with him whilst listening to his recordings of American motivational speakers. She says the duo used to give hitchhikers a lift and talk to them about all manner of topics including their approach to life. “I found this woman and it was just like how it would have been with my dad: attitude is everything, mind is everything,” Fiona says. “Anyway, she retired within a year, gave the whole thing to me, handed it over, and it was a central London practice. “And then one day, there was this article in The Times and it was talking about this phenomenon that was taking off in the US and it was called coaching. It was how people wanted something different than therapy or counselling. They wanted something dynamic, challenging. “I thought, ‘Oh my good God, that’s what I do, I’m a coach’. I sort of anointed myself in that moment
and rebranded and renamed myself.” Fiona sought publicity from the media and soon became a renowned coaching authority. “I have always been good, believe it or not, about getting publicity,” she says. “I knew that the way to spread the message, the word, and really build a business, was by getting features in the press. I remembered that early experience of growing up, that overnight thing that changed everything, and that is what I did for my career, my business. I got journalists interested in the message and I got featured in every newspaper in the UK. At one point, I had columns in three newspapers – the Mirror, the Mail and the Independent on Sunday.” The media exposure opened doors for the entrepreneur, she says: “At the time five or six people were saying they were coaches in the UK. I just became the most known because I knew how to get featured in the press. And then one day, I took a call, and that was from one of the biggest publishers in the world, and they said: ‘Can you write?’. I said: ‘Absolutely’. “Then a week later, I had a five-figure advance and the first of those books was
‘Be Your Own Life Coach’. That came out in 2000 and that was an instant bestseller. That’s still in print today. It still sells.” Fiona draws on her own personal experience of building a brand to mentor other businesses. “Now I work with driven entrepreneurs to really share their message to explode in the world with a personal brand,” she says. “I work with driven people, entrepreneurs who want to stand out, who want to reach millions with their message. I help them to reach millions with a message, by placing them on stages and by getting pictures in the press as well. “I will be doing a lot of speaking over the next couple of months. I’ll be in Berlin, Amsterdam, Istanbul, Belfast, Dublin, Toronto; seven, eight countries. I love it, and it’s the fastest way to grow your business.” Fiona concludes: “I love helping people with a big message. I love helping people explode their business. Yes, of course, we all have to pay bills, but also make a difference in the world. I love helping people get their message out there.”
“Guess what we did? We went to the papers. We were in the papers, we were on radio, and guess what happened? Suddenly, the housing authority backed down and said: ‘Well actually, there is a place’. And that is when I learned the power of the Press.”

There was a fine turnout of 56 players at Ardglass Golf Club, for the Ulster Press Golf Society event, with Jack Murphy Jewellers of Newry as sponsors of the day. The weather was ‘passable with care’ and the wind and brief spell of rain failed to dampen spirits, on what was an excellent day in every way. The challenging conditions meant that the scores were lower than usual, but the testing Ardglass course was equally to blame and few were able to master this excellent golf course, which was in tip top condition. One who did manage to tame the course though was overall winner on the day, Garfield Harrison, who carded a splendid 37 points to win the inaugural contest for the new Stephen Grimason Memorial Trophy, presented to him by Jack Murphy on behalf of the sponsors.

Tea
In 1896, from a tea warehouse near Belfast docks, founder Robert S Thompson trained in the art of tea tasting and soon became known for his uncompromising devotion to quality.
"An independent, family business of 4 generations, born and blended in Belfast since 1896" Today, Thompson’s Tea, who make Northern Ireland’s favourite tea, Punjana, have been blending and packing their award-winning range in Belfast for over 125 years.
Northern Ireland's favourite cuppa, nestled in a tea bush in India.
So, where did the Punjana name come from? It was in the 1950s that second-generation, James Thompson asked his wife, Elizabeth, to come up with a name for the tea company. One day, when on a shopping trip to Comber, inspiration came from the top of the Gillespie Memorial statue. Here, there is an inscription that mentions a place in India called ‘The Punjab’, and after a little playing around with the name, Punjana Tea was born. Such was the belief in this new brand name that they decided to feature an advert on the very first night of UTV in 1959 with their now famous Pick Punjana Tea jingle.

On a recent visit to India... Arriving at the tea gardens is like diving into a sea of pure, green leaf. It’s truly astonishing to see the uninterrupted acres of luscious tea leaves, growing rapidly in the heat and humidity of Assam. Growing tea in Assam is a way of life! On these gardens, we had the pleasure of meeting people who had dedicated their life to learning about tea, and it was inspirational to see the true passion that they had – they are truly steeped in tea.
Jamie Thompson
Fourth generation, Camille and Jamie Thompson share this same passion for Punjana and take great pleasure in continuing to select teas from only the very finest gardens in Assam, Kenya and beyond.

REVIEW
Going Loco In Voco Ulster Tatler reviews the new Voco hotel, located at the Gasworks in Belfast. The former Radisson Blu hotel was recently taken over by the renowned IHG Hotels and Resorts, who have transformed the hotel with a £3.6million refurbishment to become ‘Voco’ hotel. We were invited along to the launch of Belfast’s latest hotel in July to see firsthand what the new hotel has to offer. The location at the Gasworks gives the hotel a prime spot in the city centre. It is close enough to be walking distance from everything you need, yet it sits back from the road, avoiding traffic. With ample parking on site, you won’t need to worry about finding nearby city centre car parks, which takes the stress out of getting there. On entering the hotel, the modern aesthetic makes an impression straight away. The interior design was carried out by O Donnell O Neill Design and features pops of colour, stylish functionality, sleek tiles and lots of modern finishing touches. My personal favourite was the curved bookcase and seating area as you enter at reception – it is the perfect area to sit with a friend and enjoy a coffee. Or if a cocktail is more up your street then the chic bar area is the place to go. The bar staff are incredibly skilled and can whip up an icecold mojito, or a refreshing daiquiri to whet your appetite before dinner in the adjoining Pomo restaurant. The restaurant is Italianinspired and the smells and ambience will immediately draw you in. Italian cuisine is my favourite type of food and just like everything else in the hotel, Pomo doesn’t disappoint. They offer up all the Italian classics: pizza, lasagne, creamy pastas and chicken parmesan, to name a few. Stand-
out dishes included the crispy calamari with lemon aioli and marinara sauce, which was so fresh and moreish; and the tartufo pistachio dessert was the perfect balance of rich, yet delicate. The hotel has 120 premium guest rooms and is an ideal base for tourists, or locals who want a city ‘staycation’. I love nothing more than a night away from routine, so I would definitely recommend this as a place for a pitstop after shopping, a girly getaway or a date night with the other half. The hotel’s modern interior continues to the bedrooms, where the large beds have trendy leather headboards, quirky artwork and contemporary en suites. A lovely touch in the bedroom was the bags of Yellowman and Tayto crisps, putting a Northern Irish stamp on hotel snacks. A hotel trip is made complete with a tasty buffet breakfast. Pomo restaurant serves a range of continental buffet options, as well as a cooked self-service and specific menu orders, such as eggs benedict and stacked pancakes. The fresh food is impressive and matched by the equally impressive staff who are passionate and attentive – a real asset to the hotel. This hotel transformation has put Voco on the must-visit list for Belfast city centre. By ticking all the boxes for style, function and top service, it will be a massive draw for tourists and locals alike – we will all be going loco in Voco. www. vocobelfast.com

This September, the award-winning Food and Cider Weekend returns to Armagh, promising a vibrant celebration of the region’s world-famous produce. From Thursday, 5th to Sunday, 8th, this year’s festival features over 50 free events, each crafted to delight the senses and celebrate the Armagh Bramley Apple and other local treasures. Crannagael House is a highlight of this year’s programme - hosting four events throughout the festival - the historic venue provides a unique opportunity to savour culinary creations at the very birthplace of Armagh’s apple story. Among the standout events is the fivecourse Bramley Banquet, curated by Gareth Reid of 4 Vicars. Set in the charming home of Jane and John Nicholson, whose ancestors planted the first Bramley seedling in County Armagh, the often-soldout event features locally sourced ingredients, including produce grown on the estate, and bespoke wine pairings for each course. REVIEW
Way out West Chris Sherry visits Glenlo Abbey & Estate in Co Galway. I always jump at an opportunity to visit Galway; I love the city’s culture, vibrancy and bohemian vibe. The city centre always seems to be thronged with tourists but, as much as I like the bustle, when it comes to somewhere to stay, I prefer to take a step back from the action. On a recent visit I found the ideal location: Glenlo Abbey & Estate, perfectly situated, just two miles from the centre to be exact. We were able to be in the city centre within minutes by car but the estate was an oasis of calm and tranquillity. The five-star luxury hotel is situated on 138 acres and overlooks Lough Corrib. The location is a gateway to Connemara, one of the most beautiful and wild parts of Ireland. What must be one of the most scenic towns in Ireland, Clifden, is around an hour’s drive from the hotel. Lodger Glenlo Abbey recently opened a development of self-catering lodges on the estate, which was where we spent two nights. They are a few minutes’ walk from the main hotel and guests can avail of all hotel facilities. We liked the sense of having our own space without losing any of the luxury of staying in the hotel. The lodges are extremely high-end with every mod con you could possibly require. Our lodge was comprised of a spacious living/dining/kitchen area, laundry facilities and three en suite bedrooms. I must confess we didn’t make use of the well-equipped kitchen, instead opting to have all our meals in the hotel.
108
Estate Activities For those preferring not to leave the environs of this beautiful estate (understandably), Glenlo offers plenty of activities for guests: walking, golf, fishing, spa facilities, falconry… the list goes on. We borrowed the hotel bicycles during our stay and cycled down to the shores of Lough Corrib, the second largest lake on the island of Ireland (after Lough Neagh).
Dining On our day of arrival we enjoyed casual dining in Palmers Bar and Kitchen, a contemporary space adjacent to the main hotel building with lovely views of Lough Corrib. The bar is popular with golfers and all major sporting fixtures are shown on the big screens. There is also outdoor seating, where we lingered over a drink in the sunshine between showers. Our food was excellent, just what we needed after the long journey from Belfast. The culinary highlight of our trip, however, was a visit to The Pullman, a unique dining experience aboard a railway carriage, where we had dinner on the second evening of our stay. When I first heard that we were going to be dining in an old railway car I was somewhat bemused, unsure of what I was letting myself in for. I should not have doubted; it was a wonderful experience, probably the highlight of our stay at Glenlo. The restaurant is made up of two carriages, one of which is from the original Orient Express. The carriages have a long and interesting history: one was used to transport Winston Churchill’s body to his final resting place in 1965 and featured in the 1974 film Murder on the Orient Express. Once aboard you are transported to another age; everyday life is suspended for a time, and you can truly relax. It also helps that the food is superb and the service top-notch. If you are not staying in Glenlo Abbey but happen to be in this part of the world I would recommend you book The Pullman Restaurant. It was one of the most enjoyable dining experiences I have had in a long time.
Nora Barnacle House It just so happens that we visited Galway on Sunday 16th June, which is Bloomsday, the date on which James Joyce’s novel Ulysses is set. The novel is set in Dublin but the writer’s wife, Nora Barnacle, was born in Galway City and her family home, which is now a museum, was open to the public. The two-room terraced house is in the city centre and is a fascinating place, with letters and photos of the Joyce family on display. Whether or not you are interested in James Joyce I would thoroughly recommend a visit. It is hard to believe that eight people lived in such a small space at one time; it gives a sense of the hardship endured by earlier generations in Ireland just over a century ago. Getting There There’s no getting away from the fact that Galway City is a long distance from Belfast – 200 miles to be exact. Most of the journey is on motorway or dual carriageway, but it still takes four hours. Motorway driving over such a long distance can be boring, so on our way south we decided to break the journey by travelling on minor roads from Dunleer to Mullingar. This may have added to our journey time but the route was much more interesting, taking us through often-overlooked parts of the country: Ardee, Castletown, Delvin, Kells etc, all rather more appealing than a stop-off at the Applegreen. And Finally… Glenlo Abbey is among the best of the best; a beautiful luxury hotel dating back to the 18th century in one of the most scenic counties in Ireland. NASHVILLE 2 BELFAST A CELEBRATION OF CULTURE, MUSIC AND FOOD
Belfast-Nashville Sister City Relationship:
VENUES
A Cultural Fusion of Food, Music and Tradition
BELFAST CITY HALL Thursday 22nd August - Civic Reception, Lord Mayor and invited guests.
The sister city relationship between Belfast, Northern Ireland and Nashville, Tennessee, is a testament to the power of cultural exchange and mutual appreciation. Established in 1994, this partnership has blossomed into a vibrant celebration of food, music and shared heritage, creating a unique bridge between two distinct yet remarkably similar cities. Central to this cultural fusion has been the tireless work of individuals like Michael King (restaurateur and entrepreneur from Nashville), whose efforts in organizing events have significantly contributed to the deepening of this transatlantic bond. A Culinary Journey: From Belfast to Nashville Food has always been a fundamental aspect of cultural identity, and the Belfast-Nashville connection is no exception. The exchange of culinary practices between the two cities has led to exciting events where chefs from Belfast showcase their skills in Nashville and vice versa. These events not only delight the taste buds but also foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of each other’s culinary traditions. Harmonizing Hearts: The Musical Connection Music is the heartbeat of both Belfast and Nashville, and it is through this universal language that the sister city relationship truly shines. Belfast, with its rich musical heritage that spans traditional Irish folk to contemporary rock, finds a kindred spirit in Nashville, the undisputed capital of country music. Michael King's Role: A Bridge Between Cultures Michael King's dedication to the Belfast-Nashville relationship cannot be overstated. His passion for cultural exchange and his organizational prowess have made him a key figure in nurturing this sister city bond. Through his work, King has not only helped organize major events but has also fostered personal connections between artists, chefs and cultural ambassadors from both cities. His efforts have resulted in numerous successful exchanges and have laid the groundwork for future collaborations. By bringing people together through food, music and cultural events, King has helped create a living, breathing testament to the power of international friendship and cooperation. Pet Abduction Bill Passed
The Pet Abduction Bill will become one of the most significant animal welfare laws when it comes into force later this year, says one of the UK’s leading pet charities. Cats Protection says the law – which passed its final stages today as part of the parliamentary wash-up – will for the first time recognise the pain, stress and fear suffered by stolen pets and their owners. Annabel Berdy, Senior Advocacy and Government Relations Officer for Cats Protection, said: “Up until now, the theft of pets has been dealt with in the same way as the theft of property like a mobile phone or a bike. It is not recorded as a specific offence, and there has been no recognition of the pain, fear and stress suffered by stolen pets and their owners. “The Pet Abduction Bill will mean pets are no longer at the mercy of criminal profiteers. It will help us build a picture of the scale of the problem, identify high risk areas and map out the manner and pattern of this type of crime, which will help owners protect their pets.” Cats Protection is the UK’s leading cat welfare charity and has helped an average of 157,000 cats and kittens a year over the last five years through its national network which includes around 200 volunteer-run branches and 32 centres.

CUTTING EDGE FIRST OPINION AND REFERRAL, INDEPENDENT VETERINARY SERVICE
Gareth Torney, Small Animal Director.
Jubilee Veterinary Centre has provided an independent veterinary service in Ards for over 100 years and we have been on our current site for nearly 30. The business is owned by four veterinary surgeons working in two separate clinical divisions: a companion animal department and a farm animal, equine and zoo division. They work full-time in the business and are independent (not corporate-owned) practitioners, dedicated to providing a first-rate clinical service, competitively priced for your animals. The business decisions are made, first and foremost, to ensure your animal has access to the best on-site care and service while at the same time providing a welcoming environment to you, our clients and our loyal staff. Gareth Torney is a companion animal director; he was born in Comber and first came to see the practice when he was just 16 years old. He subsequently graduated as a veterinary surgeon in 1996 and spent nine years over the water in various mixed practices before joining Jubilee in 2005. He became a partner in 2008 and has been focused on driving the companion animal service forward since then.
None of this would be possible without the team of welcoming receptionists who are your first point of call; our nurses who support the vets with nursing specialities of their own; and our caring associated vets, with a diverse wealth of interests and clinical skills, all striving to keep your pets healthy and happy. The vets in our practice are, first and foremost, general practitioners. For us, being a generalist means our jobs are never boring. We are medical consultants, surgeons, anaesthetists, intensive care physicians, all rolled into one. On top of that, we treat a vast array of species of different anatomy and diseases. In most cases, we deal with the whole animal which means we are responsible for their care from start to finish. We believe this all-encompassing service gives a better standard of care. We value our staff and try to nurture them, encouraging them to develop in their clinical careers. This, we find, means they tend to stay with us and so you will see the same faces at every visit, allowing you to build up relationships and trust. We have a competitive pet health scheme, where your dogs and cats can avail of a full year’s internal and external parasite treatment, along with your booster and other discounted services and products, with an affordable monthly direct debit. See our website for details. We have invested heavily in our facilities and diagnostic and surgical capabilities in the last 15 years. We have just finished a brand-new extension to our companion animal section which is bright and comfortable, allowing up to six clinicians to consult at the same time. Two years ago, we invested in a brand-new CT scanner on-site. This is an incredible piece of technology. It is essentially a three-

dimensional X-ray machine which has revolutionised how we image the body. We’ve had guinea pigs, geese and, of course, plenty of dogs and cats examined, with amazing diagnostic results, allowing us to do a better job. The waiting time would generally be no more than two or three days for CT imaging. We offer our services on an outpatient basis to all vet practitioners in the province. We use a board-certified radiography company that can give results within 24 hours. We also work with all major insurance companies.
02891812226 to reserve your slot. We have been able to remove retained abdominal testicles with keyhole techniques and will be able to offer minimally invasive abdominal biopsies in the future.
Our biggest technical development within the last year has been the commencement of a keyhole surgery department. We have been neutering female dogs in this way and have achieved astonishing results, with much faster recovery and significantly less pain and complications. There is no need for a buster collar, just a protective surgical suit which is included in the price. This surgery is achieved through two small ports, between 5mm and 10mm. Dogs are, more or less, back to normal within two or three days, instead of a recovery period of up to two weeks with the traditional open surgery.
Gareth has a keen interest in orthopaedic surgery, especially for cruciate disease in dogs. We provide a TPLO and TTA surgical service, again working with all major insurance companies and with local vets in the area who don’t have this facility. TPLO and TTA would be considered gold standard repair techniques for cruciate disease, certainly in larger and more athletic dogs. Our website has more information if you are interested. Check us out on jubileevetcentre.co.uk
The cost, as of writing, is from £545 to £600; this includes a pre-op consultation, the anaesthetic, and surgery itself. A two-day post-op nurse check is also included. We are currently offering 10% discount (not on top of any other offer) for keyhole procedures booked and carried out in the next three months - from August to October - just quote Jubilee 24 after reading this article. Call us on
In any business or service, communication is key. We use a practice phone app, Pets App, which links you to our practice, improving how we can communicate with you. It has proven very popular.
So, in short, if you are looking for a quality, competitively priced, independent, caring, primary vet service for your animals, or if you have more complicated medical pet concerns needing advanced imaging like CT or surgery, feel free to drop us a line or talk to your own vet about being referred as an outpatient.

ARTS DIARY
EDITED BY KELLIE BURCH KELLIE@ULSTERTATLER.COM
Launch of Prospect Cottage Photographer Gilbert McCarragher, who originally hails from Armagh, first encountered the work of artist and director, Derek Jarman, when he was as a teenager. As a young man growing up in rural Northern Ireland, in a postPaisley era, he says there were few voices out there for gay people. And then he watched Jarman’s Sebastiane.. “It was a beautiful poetic film that portrayed same sex relationships in a positive way.” Gilbert left NI at 21 to go to Art School and it was here a flatmate gifted him a copy of Derek Jarman’s Garden. The book documents the world-famous garden Jarman created in the grounds of Prospect Cottage, the home he shared with partner Keith Collins in Dungeness. By a quirk of fate, Gilbert later found himself moving to Dungeness where he became friends with the artist, filmmaker and gay activist, up until his death in 1994. Gilbert remained close friends with Keith Collins, who continued Jarman’s legacy by maintaining the gardens he had so lovingly created. When Collins also passed away, Gilbert was invited in 2018 to create a visual record of this private world. The result of this is Prospect Cottage: Derek Jarman’s House, published by Thames & Hudson. This stunning book is the first time the interior of the cottage, as opposed to the world-famous gardens, has been extensively documented. Room by room, McCarragher has thoughtfully captured this sanctuary with photographs which are accompanied by reflective essays that take the reader inside Prospect Cottage, revealing something of its history and his experience of photographing there. Speaking at the book’s launch, which was held at Belfast Exposed and attracted visitors such as Karim Rehmani White from publisher Thames and Hudson; and curator Ciara Hickey, Gilbert McCarragher explained the process of photographing the cottage took much longer than anticipated. “This house had such a beating heart, which is why it took three years to complete photographing it.” Layering creativity with feeling, McCarragher has achieved a stunning tribute to a space that has a life of its own. His unique style has allowed him to create a multifaceted volume which provides readers and fans with the opportunity to delve into the previously hidden recesses of one of the world’s most prolific artists. The launch of Prospect Cottage: Derek Jarman’s House took place on 28 June.

Launch of The Vanishing Elephant Hidden in City Side Shopping Centre is a door. And once you enter it, you are transported to the magical world of the Cahoots NI. This exciting new space was the perfect space to launch the theatre company’s first original book, The Vanishing Elephant, to accompany its new production of the same name. Written by Charles Way and illustrated by Sabine Dargent, this beautiful storybook reflects on universally important topics of migration, displacement, new beginnings and acceptance - all told through the eyes of an astonishing Asian elephant! At the launch I spoke to Cahoots’ associate producer Gary Crossan who explained that this project was slightly different for Cahoots. Typically the theatre company uses an existing story to create a piece of theatre; this is the first time they have created a book and then made a play around it.

Cahoots debuted the stage production of The Vanishing Elephant in New York last year to critical acclaim. Featuring striking life-size puppetry, the production excitingly is now coming to Grand Opera House as part of the Belfast International Arts Festival from 31st October – 2nd November. At the launch, guests - such as Gillian McColgan, Cahoots NI board member; Megan Keenan, drama facilitator; and musician Kyron Bourke - were treated to refreshments before being invited into the stunning theatre space. The audience were warmly welcomed by Cahoots’ artistic director Paul Bosco McEneaney, who explained that while they moved into the space during Covid, it is only in the last year they took the step to transform it into the theatrical space it is now. When discussing the book, which was inspired by an illusion performed in New York in 1918, whereby Harry Houdini vanished a
five-tonne elephant live on stage, McEneaney said, “We are extremely proud to see this, our first storybook in print, and it is our hope that it resonates with young readers, educators and community groups across the world.” As well as hearing more about this wonderful book, guests were treated to live entertainment, a reading of the book as well a Q&A from author and playwright Charles Way. The book is available now via www.cahootsni.com and in some local independent bookstores including Arts for All (Cityside), Books Paper Scissors (Stranmillis) and the Linenhall Library. Tickets for the live production can be purchased via the Belfast International Arts Festival website or The Grand Opera House. The launch of The Vanishing Elephant took place on 20 June.

Margey & Bjourson Announce Summer Exhibition in Portballintrae Artists Adrian Margey and Evana Bjourson will be staging a joint summer exhibition and sale of their work at Portballintrae Village Hall from Friday 16th - Sunday 18th August. This annual exhibition follows hot on the heels of the duo’s three week July residency at The Arcadia in Portrush. Some of the artwork created during their residency will be showcased at the Portballintrae exhibition. Visitors should expect to see Margey’s dynamic portrayals of Northern Ireland’s landscape and landmarks, especially his bold, colourful depictions of the north coast that have brought his work to prominence. Also featured in this exhibition will be his more impressionistic works that adopt a naturalistic colour palette and employ hand and finger painting techniques. Bjourson’s stunning work incorporates human interaction, seascapes and coastal experiences. Her figurative work reflects thoughts on the reason for and role of humanity while her dynamic wave paintings take inspiration from life on the north coast. The exhibition will run Friday 16th August: 11am - 9pm and continues Saturday 17 August: 11am – 9pm and Sunday 18th August 11am – 6pm at Portballintrae Village Hall. Admission free – everyone welcome. Free parking is available in front of the Village Hall. Visit www.adrianmargey.com | www.evanabjoursonart.com or telephone 07841593762 for more information.

The Bridge Section of Windsor Lawn Tennis Club raises funds for Motor Neurone Disease In June, friends of former-long standing club member, Lindsay Rainey, came together to host a bridge event in her memory, which successfully raised funds for Motor Neurone Disease. Council member, Angela Currie, said: ‘’Lindsay played tennis and bridge at Windsor LT Club over a significant number of years. As research into the causes of this awful illness is very much to the fore following the deaths of high profile, sporting individuals, such as Rob Burrow and Doddie Weir, it was also our wish and our friend’s, that any funds raised should go directly to research purposes. We were delighted to raise £2853.50. Windsor has always been a very inclusive, welcoming, and friendly club, and the response from all sections of the wider club community (tennis, bridge and squash) in coming together to make this a success, alongside the support which the club gave to our former friend, has been immeasurable. During her illness, this support within the club community, and a strong sense of being made to feel welcome, was hugely appreciated by Lindsay.”

Newry-based interior designer and author, Emma Quinn, had a launch party for her new book “Life by Design” on Thursday 18th July 2024 in Centred Soul, Newry, where she was surrounded by family, friends and colleagues. Life by Design is the story of how Emma struggled with, and was able to overcome, anxiety and birth trauma after her daughter was born. She hopes that by sharing her story it may inspire others who are suffering. The venue Centred Soul, was chosen because of Emma’s personal connection to the social enterprise, which supports women through yoga, therapy and a beautiful coffee shop. All proceeds from book sales on the night went directly to Centred Soul with over £500 being raised.

BUILD YOUR DREAM HOME
BUILDING YOUR DREAM HOME IN IRELAND: KEY CONSIDERATIONS 2020 ARCHITECTS GIVE THEIR TOP TIPS FOR BUILDING YOUR DREAM HOME. Embarking on the journey of building a new house is both exciting and daunting. To ensure success, it’s crucial to focus on three main aspects: hiring a good architect, preparing detailed drawings and specifications, and maintaining clear communication throughout the construction phase. HIRING A GOOD ARCHITECT Selecting a skilled architect is the cornerstone of a successful build. A good architect will create a design that reflects your lifestyle and needs while responding to the unique characteristics of your site. This means taking into account the local climate, topography, and views. An architect with local experience will understand how to maximise natural light, optimise energy efficiency, and harmonise your home with its surroundings. Engaging in thorough consultations ensures the design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, tailored to your personal requirements. ACQUIRING PLANNING PERMISSION Before construction can begin, obtaining planning permission is essential. This process involves demonstrating compliance with “local needs” criteria, ensuring road safety, and appropriately positioning the house on the site. Your architect can guide you through this, leveraging their understanding of local regulations to create a compliant design. Proper
positioning of the house can enhance views, privacy, and sunlight access, aligning with both legal requirements and personal preferences. DETAILED DRAWINGS AND SPECIFICATIONS A comprehensive set of tender drawings and a detailed specification document are vital for the bidding process. These documents outline every aspect of the build, from materials to finishes, ensuring that all contractors provide comparable quotes. Your architect will help create these documents, highlighting the importance of precision and detail. This step also involves shortlisting suitable contractors based on experience, reputation, and alignment with your project’s vision. THE CONSTRUCTION PHASE During construction, regular site visits and meticulous material selection are crucial. These visits allow the architect to ensure the build adheres to the design and specifications. Maintaining good communication between the architect, contractor, and homeowner is essential to address any issues promptly and keep the project on track. Clear, continuous dialogue helps manage expectations and ensures the result meets your vision. By focusing on these critical elements – hiring a competent architect, preparing detailed documents, and fostering strong communication – you can navigate the complexities of building a new house with confidence and clarity, culminating in the home of your dreams. 136

Celebrating
9th
Birthday
As Solarfix marks its 9th birthday on August 24th, we reflect on their remarkable journey as Northern Ireland’s leading solar panel installer. Since opening in 2015, Solarfix has established itself as Northern Ireland’s top solar company, completing over 2,000 installations across the region. These installations have generated more than 16 million units of electricity, highlighting the significant impact Solarfix has had on promoting renewable energy in Northern Ireland.
ARE SOLAR PANELS WORTH IT IN NORTHERN IRELAND?
The short answer is yes—solar panels are absolutely worth it in Northern Ireland. An average domestic solar system here generates over 4,000 units annually, potentially saving you more than £1,000 each year! Investing in solar panels not only provides a stable and predictable source of energy but also locks in electricity rates for the lifespan of the panels, protecting you from inflation. With a 25-year performance warranty, the savings can be substantial, especially given the recent fluctuations in Northern Ireland’s electricity prices.
SOLARFIX’S IMPACT OVER THE YEARS
Installing a Solarfix solar panel system offers several significant benefits. Firstly, it is less expensive than buying electricity from the grid, resulting in substantial cost savings. Beyond financial savings, Solarfix solar panels significantly reduce carbon emissions. In fact, over the past nine years, their installations have saved Northern Ireland over 4 million kilograms of carbon. Additionally, solar power is better for the environment, as it reduces the need to burn fossil fuels and thereby lowers carbon emissions. Finally, solar power provides greater energy security and reduces price volatility, offering a more stable and predictable energy source for your property.
WHY CHOOSE SOLARFIX?
Solarfix stands out as Northern Ireland’s leading solar panel installer, as a Duracell Energy Platinum Partner and a SolarEdge Preferred installer, they ensure top-quality solar panels systems and installation services. With over 20 years of experience, their expert team is committed to providing you with the best solar power solutions, from consultation and installation to aftercare and support.
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
By choosing Solarfix, you’re not only supporting a greener planet but also making a wise financial investment. A typical domestic system generates over 4,000 kWh, saving you over £1,000 annually and offering a return on investment in 5-8 years. For commercial properties, the return on investment can be as low as three years, with systems designed to meet your specific needs. Your property will always need electricity, so why not consider solar power for your home or business? Solarfix stands out as the quality solar company in Northern Ireland. Contact them now for a complimentary quote at 0800 246 5198 or visit www.solarfix.co.uk.

k c i r at p n w o D Downpatrick is one of Ireland’s most historic towns, taking its name from a fort which stood on the hill, now the site of Down Cathedral. The town is know for its connections with the patron saint of Ireland and it is where Saint Patrick was buried in 461. His grave is still a place of pilgrimage and the Saint Patrick Centre in Downpatrick is purpose-built to tell his story. If history and culture is of interest, you will not fall short of places to visit, with Down Arts Centre and Down County Museum, which are perfect for tourists and locals alike.

The aim of this promotional campaign is to encourage residents to buy from and celebrate their local independent businesses. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne said, “Make it Local is a great initiative which has been running for several years in partnership with local traders to ensure the sustainability and vibrancy across our district. Shopping locally not only helps our businesses to thrive, but also supports families, jobs and the local economy.” Downpatrick is known for its rich heritage; it boasts a diverse range of homegrown businesses offering a wide variety of products and services. Shopping local in Downpatrick supports the unique local businesses and fosters a strong sense of community pride and cohesion. Recognising the importance of supporting local traders, the Council continues to host the Artisan Market on the third Saturday of every month in St Patrick’s Square. Why I Love...
Downpatrick
Ulster Tatler speaks to Carol Devlin, marketing manager at Bells of Crossgar.
Tell us a bit about Bells of Crossgar. It’s always been a familyrun and family-led car dealership in the area, and we’ve just recently celebrated 60 years in business, which is incredible! Charlie and Eamon Bell are always on the ground, making proactive decisions with us about the direction we’d like the business to go in, and they get stuck in. Eamon and my colleague Kathryn have been genuinely brilliant ambassadors, and I’m very lucky to have colleagues as willing to jump in front of the camera and fully immerse themselves in our ideas the way they do.
River Quoile. I feel incredibly lucky to live here and it will always be home. What do you like to do in your spare time? I’ve always been a voracious reader. Before I became a mum I would have easily read two books a week. I believe that’s where my very vivid imagination has derived from. I’m currently working my way through ‘The Education of an Idealist’ by Samantha Power, an incredible memoir of an Irish immigrant who became the youngest ever ambassador to the United Nations. As a young girl it was the Enid Blyton ‘Wishing Chair’ books that I found most inspiring. I’m a history book fanatic and hold a strong belief in the saying: ‘You have to know the past to understand the present’.
Where do you like to dine and socialise in the local area? For a sit-down meal my current favourite is The Barn, which is based in Saul, in the countryside here. They do the best steak dishes and their Arancini is super. If it’s for socialising and amazing What do you like most about Downpatrick? cocktails then it will always be Denvirs, one of the oldest surviving There’s a really passionate music culture embedded throughout coaching inns in Ireland.
